MAYOR’S REPORT & COUNCIL NEWS
FROM THE MAYOR
Robe Tourism Association
I would encourage all Robe businesses to get behind
the Association, in particular, join up and attend the
meetings. The group has made a considerable effort
in developing and promoting the winter program. All
the businesses benefit, and your support and input
would be appreciated.
Almost two years ago, 85 people came along to the
formation meeting. The committee realises business
operators are all busy, they do however, need to
have your input to achieve shared goals and visions.
Please show your support by attending the next
meeting on Monday 20th April 2015, upstairs at the
Cali. Please note this date is subject to change.
Please contact Deb Mackey on 0401 803 137 to
confirm this date.
Minister Brock’s Visit
Chief Executive, Roger Sweetman and I had the
good fortune to meet personally with Minister Brock
on the evening of Tuesday, 3rd of March. Of
particular relevance was a detailed discussion on the
status of health facilities in the town and the planning
and funding of the required upgrades.
Clean Up Australia
A good number of people participated in the clean up
at Long Beach, including Coast Care, Friends of
Little Dip and Robe Surf Live Saving Group including
Little Nippers and Robe families.
It was noted the beach was cleaner than other years,
which was very pleasing. The morning work was
concluded by a sausage sizzle cooked by the Robe
Lions Club volunteers. Well done to all participants.
In Memorium
The man who brought the modern up to date
pharmacy to Robe has passed away. Peter Pope
and his wife Louise built and operated the Robe
Pharmacy in the mid 1980’s and operated until
1994.
Peter passed away in Wentworth, NSW on 21st
February 2015. His funeral service was held on
Wednesday 4th March 2015 in Mt Gambier.
Robe ANZAC Centenary Memorial
To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of ANZAC
Day, the Robe RSL Sub-branch, in partnership with
District Council of Robe, is planning to erect a
Memorial Wall within the existing Memorial precinct.
The Wall will be surmounted by a bronzed slouch hat
(as worn by the first ANZACs), and will provide a site
for memorial plaques relating to conflicts post WW2.
Although the project is being funded by the
Sub-branch and the Council, there is a limit to those
monies, and thus a limitation on the scope of the
project. Accordingly, the Robe RSL Sub-branch is
seeking public support, by way of donation, in order
to provide sufficient funds to ensure that the end
result is a memorial that truly reflects the spirit of our
community.
To make a donation (or for further information)
please contact either of the undersigned.

COUNCIL NEWS
FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE
Waste Management
The management of household refuse and recycling
continues to present challenges to Council. For three
months of the year, Robe becomes the second largest town
in the South East and this places pressures on our waste
management systems.
Council, after conducting consultation with the waste
services provider and our rental accommodation
businesses, has decided to introduce additional recycling
collections during the holiday period and the ability to
deposit household waste at the transfer station during
opening times for a fee of $3 per bag.
Undergrounding power (PLEC)
Council has adopted an undergrounding power policy which
in brief, states that Council will assess requests for
undergrounding power in accordance with the State
Governments Power Lines Environment Committee (PLEC)
guidelines which state that:
Council will be trialing both new services in the upcoming
summer holiday season. By allowing people to deposit
household refuse at the waste transfer station, Council
acknowledges that there will be the temptation for people to
leave their bags at the gate outside the opening hours at
their convenience to avoid paying the fee. If this practice
occurs to the extent that it causes significant increase to
Councils waste costs then the service will be withdrawn.
Implementation of Councils street scaping proposals on
previously funded projects will also be a factor in
determining priority and consideration of funding
applications for PLEC. The following illustrates the types of
projects that will be considered for funding;
In assessing whether or not an application should receive
funding, PLEC will take into consideration the following in its
assessment of the project;

The size and characteristics of the community likely
to benefit from the project,

The significance of the area, or route, such as
tourism, heritage or its symbolic value (e.g. gateway),
Further publicity will be given to the changes to our current 
Other significant factors such as recognition of a
waste management practices as the summer holiday period
greater safety priority, the proximity to previous PLEC
approaches.
projects or if it is part of a staged development
Waste management is one of Councils biggest single costs
and these costs are directly recovered from the community,
therefore if councils costs increase as a result of poor
practices by the community, including our visitors, the
increase will be directly passed on to the community.
It is everyone’s responsibility to be responsible in relation to
waste management to ensure our costs are keep to a
minimum.
Celebration of Centenary of the ANZAC Landing
Council, in cooperation with the Robe RSL is upgrading the
War Memorial precinct.
The RSL have undertaken the repair of the War Memorial
and Council are erecting a piece of sculpture to
commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landing at
Gallipoli.
The sculpture which is a brass slouch hat mounted on a
granite plinth is the first part of what will be a project that
includes additional paving and the erection of a wall of
remembrance which will be completed in time for the
commemoration of the end of World War One in 2018.

Routes of high traffic volumes (major arterial roads),
Areas of high tourism, heritage or amenity value,
Routes of high symbolic value (e.g. gateway routes)

centres, recreation areas, foreshore and coastal
recreation areas)
Major through routes in towns
PLEC funding for normal residential streets will not be
considered, however some residential areas may be an
unavoidable component of a scheme.
If property owners wish to underground the power in front of
their properties and their request does not meet the PLEC
guidelines, the project may commence if the property
owners are prepared to pay for all the costs involved, both
SA Power Networks and Councils.
Maintenance of the Obelisk
Council is in the process of investigating how it will go about
repainting and undertaking minor maintenance on the
Obelisk. As everyone will appreciate, the site is challenging
and Council must ensure the health and safety of anyone
who undertakes work on the structure, however these are

RSL Community Bus Volunteer Drivers
Yet again we are looking for more great men/women to take
up the ‘steering wheel’ and join our group of dedicated
drivers who provide our local community with a bus service
round the town / district and once a month to Mt Gambier.
Should we gain 12 drivers it would involve one month of
commitment. Rosters are flexible and drivers can swap
rosters when necessary.
Drivers are required to be in possession of a current CAR
licence - be willing to have the ‘volunteers’ police check
completed at the expense of the RSL;
and should be prepared for following driving duties
over a 1-month period:
Monday afternoons [except for Public Holidays]
occasionally Wednesdays,
Thursday ‘Local shopping Day 10-12:30 +/-‘,
Friday once a month down to Mt Gambier
[our clients shop & attend medical appointments etc.]
Hopefully there are a couple of people keen to join the RSL
Volunteer drivers group.
