CLASSES IA IB IC OF THE SCHOOL I.C. “MAZZINI” CASTELFIDARDO PRESENT … …STORIES AND LEGENDS OF THEIR REGION MOUNT CONERO MOUNT SIBILLA THE LEGEND OF THE “ TWO SISTERS” During the long winter evenings farmers gathered around the fireplace telling their children scary stories, tales. A legend tells that between Numana and Sirolo, along the coast south of Mount Conero, a beautiful mermaid enchanted sailors with her songs! Come, come here! The sailors were chained to the walls of a cave and a sea monster tortured them. Help me! Aiuto! Sauve-moi! One day the monster, due to his wickedness, was split into two parts and turned into stone. ...and it is still there , transformed into two stacks, called the “two sisters”... no one is scared of the monster any longer. THE SLAVES’ CAVE Between Numana and Portonovo, in front of the two stacks called the Two Sisters there is a profound cave called “The Slaves’ Cave”. The pirates used the cave to keep their treasures. Some centuries ago a beautiful Venetian princess was taken prisoner into the cave. The young lady’s relatives didn’t have the money to pay the large ransom so the pirates killed her after a long captivity. The tears she shed formed a stream that, from the rock, flows out into the sea. THE SIBYL’S CAVE The Sibyl was a good fairy, a prophetess. She lived in a cave that was her kingdom, the “Sibyl’s Cave”. The grotto is inside the Mount Sibilla on the Sibillini Mountains, 2175 high. A knight- errant who was looking for his parents went into the cave. The grotto was lighted by thousand of torches. Suddenly a beautiful queen, wearing splendid clothes and jewels, approached him and warmly welcomed him. The queen was very kind to the knight who, enchanted by her, spent there a long time; the knight knew that he couldn’t stay there more than one year otherwise he would have remained in the cave for ever and would have been damned. But he managed to escape and he finally found his parents. In the town of the accordion the expert hands of craftsmen make this instrument following the old tradition to reach perfection but also using the new technologies. Nowadays more than 500 artisans are involved in the manufacturing of the accordions and in preparing and assembling its parts. Different kinds of accordions are made; those for the amateur players or for the professional and most demanding musicians. The small, medium sized and big companies of the town manufacture about 20000 accordions that reach every part of the world. Everyone who has an accordion made in Castelfidardo, either an old or a new one, should be aware and proud to have a musical instrument which is a masterpiece of high craftsman technology, an instrument where thousand of parts form an incomparable mosaic of skills, intuition and sensitivity and when someone expands the bellows, joyful notes come out for the pleasure of the ear but above all for the delight of the spirit. This important inheritance is due to PAOLO SOPRANI’s brilliant intuition, the pioneer of the accordion manufacturers 150 years ago. ago THE STORY OF PAOLO SOPRANI AND OF THE ACCORDION …YEAR 1863… A little medieval village called Castelfidardo lies upon a hill, a few miles away from the Adriatic sea. An Austrian pilgrim carrying a mysterious “musical box” with him is walking to the Sanctuary of the “Black Madonna” of Loreto. He arrives in the territory of Castelfidardo. At sunset he asks for hospitality for the night at a farmhouse. The Soprani family lives in the farmhouse. It is composed of Antonio, his wife Lucia and their three sons Paolo, Settimio and Pasquale. This family offers the foreign pilgrim hospitality. During the night the young Paolo disassembles and studies the instrument with great curiosity. The next morning the pilgrim is very grateful for the hospitality he received. So, according to the tradition, he gives Paolo Soprani that instrument as a present. This will change Paolo’s destiny as well as the future of Castelfidardo. After a long work Paolo creates his first accordion which was successful immediately afterword. The instrument is in great demand, so Paolo asks his brothers and other people to work with him in his workshop. In 1909 Paolo Soprani opens the new factory where 600 people work. Accordions manufactured in Castelfidardo are now sold all over the world Western Europe: Scandinavia Germany, 60% Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain. 2% Latin America Australia 21% Eastern Europe: Poland, Russia Japan, China North America: 13% COMPANIES MANUFACTURING ACCORDIONS 25 Turnover 32,6 million euros People employed About 320 COMPANIES AFFIXING THEIR QUALITY TRADEMARK : Bulgari Armando S.r.l. INSIDE THE MUSEUM This museum is located in the basement of the town hall, in a suggestive seventeenth-century setting. The museum is dedicated to the accordion, an instrument which was almost entirely produced in Castelfidardo for over a century. Not only the museum shows the history of accordions, it also pays tribute to the many craftsmen and manufacturers whose hard work contributed to change the culture of this area. There was such an economic growth which was unthinkable before in a rural world. THE BIGGEST ACCORDION IN THE WORLD (GUINNESS RECORD) WAS MADE IN CASTELFIDARDO, where you can see it !!!
