New Process for Storing Solar Energy
ntil now, solar power has
been a daytime-only energy source, because storing
extra solar energy for later use is
prohibitively expensive and grossly
inefficient. MIT researchers have
hit upon a simple, inexpensive, highly efficient process for storing solar
energy. Requiring nothing but abundant, non-toxic natural materials,
this discovery could unlock the most
potent, carbon-free energy source of
all: the sun. “This is the nirvana of
what we’ve been talking about for
years,” said MIT’s Daniel Nocera,
the Henry Dreyfus Professor of
Energy at MIT and senior author of
a paper describing the work in the
July 31 issue of Science. “Solar
power has always been a limited,
far-off solution. Now we can seriously think about solar power as
unlimited and soon.”
Inspired by the photosynthesis
performed by plants, Nocera and
Matthew Kanan, a postdoctoral fellow in Nocera’s lab, have developed
U
an unprecedented process that
will allow the sun’s energy to be
used to split water into hydrogen
and oxygen gases. Later, the oxygen and hydrogen may be recombined inside a fuel cell, creating
carbon-free electricity to power
your house or your electric car,
day or night.
The key component in
Nocera and Kanan’s new process
is a new catalyst that produces
oxygen gas from water; another
catalyst produces valuable
hydrogen gas. The new catalyst
consists of cobalt metal, phosphate and an electrode, placed in
water.
When
electricity—
whether from a photovoltaic cell,
a wind turbine or any other source—
runs through the electrode, the
cobalt and phosphate form a thin
film on the electrode, and oxygen
gas is produced.
Combined with another catalyst,
such as platinum, that can produce
hydrogen gas from water, the system
can duplicate the water splitting
reaction that occurs during photosynthesis.
The new catalyst works at room
temperature, in neutral pH water,
and it’s easy to set up, Nocera said.
“That’s why I know this is going to
work. It’s so easy to implement,” he
said. —MIT News
GOOD NEWS!!! A HOME THAT HEATS AND COOLS ITSELF
ow wonderful would it be
to have no ties to the utility companies for heating
or cooling? Michael Sykes, a
builder from North Carolina, has
created a home that can heat and
cool itself using only solar energy.
The principle at work is “phase
H
change.” Sykes has engineered the
rosin in the wood he builds with to
change phase at 70° F. The rosin
goes from liquid to solid and back
to liquid again at room temperature. The phase change allows the
walls to soak up and trap vast
amounts of heat during the day—
cooling the room. At night, the
wood releases the heat and warms
the home. The following link will
take you to a short video clip in
which Sykes explains how it works.

The researchers—led by Chitty
Chen of the Flanders Institute for
Biotechnology in Belgium—also
showed they could determine the
size of the tumor based on the
amount of two par-ticular sugar
groups that ap-peared in the proteins.
Used with the so-called AFP

malignant tumors based on the
concentration of particular substances in the blood—Chen said
the new method was more accurate
and can better detect liver cancer
and save lives by getting 'patients

Incense Found To Be PSYCHOACTIVE
B
iologists
from
Johns
Hopkins University and the
Hebrew University in
Jerusalem have discovered that
burning frankincense (resin from the
Boswellia plant) activates poorly
understood ion channels in the brain
that alleviate anxiety and
depression, suggesting that an
entirely new class of medicinal
drugs might be right under our
noses.
Reporting their findings in
The FASEB Journal, the
researchers said that the active
compound—incensole
acetate—significantly affected
areas in the brain known to be
involved in emotions as well as
in nerve circuits that are affected by currently prescribed anxiety and depression drugs.
“In spite of information stemming from ancient texts, constituents of Boswellia had not been
investigated for psychoactivity,” said
researcher Raphael Mechoulam.
“We found that incensole acetate, a
Boswellia resin constituent, when
tested in mice lowers anxiety and
causes antidepressive-like behavior.
Apparently, most present day worshipers assume that incense burning
has only a symbolic meaning.”
To make their discovery, the
researchers administered incensole
acetate to mice and found that the
compound activated a protein called
TRPV3, which is present in mammalian brains and also known to
play a role in the perception of
warmth of the skin. When mice bred
without this protein were exposed to
incensole acetate, the compound had
no effect on their brains.
“Perhaps Marx wasn’t too
wrong when he called religion the
opium of the people: morphine
comes from poppies, cannabinoids
from marijuana, and LSD from
mushrooms; each of these has
been used in one or another religious ceremony,” said Gerald
Weissmann, Editor-in-Chief of
The FASEB Journal. “The discovery of how incensole acetate, purified from frankincense, works on
specific targets in the brain should
also help us understand diseases of
the nervous system. This study
also provides a biological explanation for millennia-old spiritual practices that have persisted across time,
distance, culture, language, and religion - burning incense really does
make you feel warm and tingly all

Eco-Friendly Dubai Pyramid Concept Could House 1.1 Million
A
s we learned from
[the movie] Wall-E,
people with half a
mind for themselves probably won’t be kosher with living with 1.1 million or so
other inhabitants within a
pyramid. That being said,
there’s always the brainwash
approach to getting ‘em in
there, and if hordes of people were ever filed into the
conceptual Ziggurat, Mother
Earth would surely appreciate it. The 2.3-square kilometer building would be
able to house over a million
people and be “almost totally selfsufficient energy-wise.” By tapping
into the planet’s renewable
resources, designers assert that it
could practically be carbon-neutral,
and given that transport within the
machine would be connected by an
“integrated 360-degree network,”
fuel-burning cars would be pointless. As with most things in Dubai,
this one seems larger than life, but if
the Burj Al Arab is any indication,
there’s at least a minuscule chance
this thing comes to fruition.

C A R D S NOT SO SMART FOR HOSPITALS
S
mart cards widely used as
access tags or to carry a
patient’s medical information, can switch off critical care
equipment.
The cards use a radio frequency
identification (RFID) system which,
when triggered, emits a signal that
identifies its user.
Now a study has shown this signal may interfere with medical
devices causing some machines,
including mechanical ventilators, to
switch off.
A number of healthcare facilities in the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) utilise smart cards. The
Imperial College London Diabetes
Centre, a Mubadala project, issues
cards to patients, while the Health
Authority Abu Dhabi and the Dubai
Health Authority are both rumoured
to be trialling the cards for use in
health insurance schemes.
Remko van der Togt, from Vrije

University in Amsterdam, and colleagues tested the cards in an intensive care unit room, with no patients
present.
Devices included external pacemakers, mechanical ventilators,
infusion pumps, dialysis devices,
defibrillators, monitors and anaesthesia devices.
In a quarter of 123 tests, the signal from the smart cards interfered
with equipment. In one in six cases
the interference was classed as
“hazardous” and included causing
ventilators, syringe pumps and
external pacemakers to malfunction.
The cards also tampered with
the atrial and ventricular electrogram curve read by the pacemaker
programmer.
Yet, the tags had to be held
close to the equipment to trigger a
reaction, show the findings published in the Journal of the
American Medical Association.
Typically a smart card had to be
placed around twelve inches from
a machine to cause interference
and around ten inches to trigger a
“hazardous” incident.
Dr Donald M. Berwick of the
US Institute for Healthcare
Improvement said the study highlighted the need for close examination of technology used in the
medical field. —ArabianBusiness.com

A Spoonful Of Baking Soda Speeds You Up, Say Scientists
B
aking soda can cut seconds
off speed.
Scientists have proven what athletes have been claiming for years—
that Granny’s old cure-all, bicarbonate of soda, can enhance performance.
‘Soda-doping’, as it is known
amongst professional sportsmen,
can have a significant effect on
endurance and speed.
Baking soda appears to
work best to enhance speed. A
study at Loughborough
University in the UK found
that of nine swimmers who
took baking soda before an
event, eight reduced their times, the
Times reports.
Jonathan Folland, who led the
study, said: ‘Essentially, sodium
bicarbonate is an alkali substance
that increases the pH of the blood.
‘This seems to reduce and offset the
acidity produced in the muscles during intense, anaerobic exercise that
produces lactic acid most quickly,
such as fast running or swimming.’
Sodium bicarbonate, as anyone
whose taken it for indigestion
knows, reduces acids—helping the
body to deal with the acidic waste
products produced during exercise,
that tire us more quickly.
But the substance isn’t a miracle-worker—shaving seconds, not
minutes, off performance time—so
that only the most proficient athletes
will notice a difference.
The
swimmers
in
the
Loughborough study cut 1.5 seconds from their 200m time. Which is
hardly significant for most of us
who take a leisurely few laps up and
down the pool.
A study at the American College
of Sports Medicine found that runners could also improve performance with baking soda.
But the substance—used
before modern times as a
household cleaning agent—
can cause upset stomachs, and
tastes foul. ‘It is not dangerous, but it tastes appalling,’
warns Dr Folland.
He says that only those who are
very serious about sport should try
the white powder, which may cause
diarrhoea.
The traditional cleaning agent
reduces acids—so the body tires
more slowly. —Daily Mail, London
LINE-OF-SIGHT SETI REVAMP PROPOSED
Earth-based astronomers can detect
extrasolar planets as they transit
across the face of distant stars, so
alien astronomers should
be able to detect the
Earth as it moves across
the face of our sun.
That’s the logic behind a
novel proposal to search
for extraterrestrial radio
signals in a tiny segment
of the sky called the
ecliptic band. The people behind the proposal,
Richard Conn Henry, an
astronomer at Johns
Hopkins, along with Seth Shostak of
the SETI Institute and Steven
Kilston of the Henry Foundation
Inc., intend to use the new Allen
10

Telescope Array to conduct their
highly targeted search.
According to Henry, who is
presenting the proposal at the
American Astronomical Society
(AAS) annual meeting in St. Louis,
the ecliptic band—a great circle
around the sky that represents the
plane of Earth’s orbit—is the critical
place to search. The sun, as viewed
from Earth, appears
annually to pass along
this circle. Any civilization that lies within a fraction of a
degree of the ecliptic
could annually detect
Earth passing in front
of the sun.
Encouragingly, the
ecliptic band comprises only about
three percent of the
sky, which would dramatically
reduce the amount of radio telescope
time needed to conduct the search.

OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2008
ars lives up to its role of master motivator in
October by book-ending the month with
potent aspects that inspire action and
resourcefulness. The red planet’s first contact is a supportive sextile (60° aspect) to
Pluto, fostering cooperation amongst allies, though it can also
elicit aggressive and controlling tendencies.
Less than an hour later, Mars leaves the airy confines of
tropical Libra and crosses the threshold of Scorpio, a sign it
co-rules with distant Pluto, where it will remain for the next
six weeks. ‘Let’s get physical’ is the cosmic anthem now, so
consider implementing a new, more energetic physical regimen. You may be inspired to take positive, creative action for
something that you strongly believe in.
M
The sun and Mercury have a busy day in the heavens on the
6th, with both planets forming aspects to Jupiter, while aligning in conjunction in between. There’ll likely be a great deal
of communication going on, though not all of it may be accurate, or truthful, with the cosmic messenger in retrograde till
the 15th. Avoid impulsive behavior or squandering hardearned resources. Act only after careful deliberation around
this juncture. Attend to back-logged paperwork and correspondence; return phone calls and email.
Venus trines Uranus, planet of surprises, on the 9th, infusing
the ethers with an impulse to do ‘something different’ today.
Artistic inspiration abounds, so seek creative outlets for your
novel notions. An unexpected social, business or financial
opportunity could occur for those dialed in to this aspect’s
adventurous influence.
haps even karmic—associations to evolve also exists.
Interpersonal relations come sharply into focus, and with the
dispositors (planetary rulers) of both the sun and moon’s signs
in Scorpio, there’s an accent on transforming conflict into cooperation. Resolve to remain positive, and be of brave heart!
After three-weeks of breakdowns, malfunctions, and mishaps,
cosmic trickster, Mercury, stations direct on the 15th in
08°Libra, accelerating thought and mental processes, while
improving the reliability of communications channels, and
media. Move ahead with plans now, cautiously at first; avoid
making snap decisions, as there’s an air of impetuosity and
impatience abroad for a few days around Mercury’s station.
Social calendars may tend to fill rather quickly once Venus
enters Sagittarius on the 18th for a four-week sojourn.
Feelings are more readily expressed, often with a dramatic
flair, while the ‘great outdoors’ can beckon.
The sun, while passing through the last degree of Libra, harmoniously aligns with Pluto on the 21st, shortly before its ingress
into tropical Scorpio on the 22nd—the sign Pluto rules—for the
next month. As a result, feelings and emotions become highly
energized, and passions run deep. Use this period to regenerate
and recharge yourself, in preparation for expansive trends
inspired by the solar orb’s forthcoming transit of Sagittarius.
A second, stronger wave of inspiration crests as the sun trines
Neptune, lord of the oceans, just hours before the Aries full
moon culminates on October 14th. Intuition is greatly
enhanced, while imagination can be divinely inspired. A boon
for photographers, videographers, and all who work with
visual media. Experiment with a camera. Creative visualization techniques can also be particularly effective now.
October’s new moon occurs on the 28th, in 06°Scorpio, inspiring us to act and speak with power in the weeks ahead, and to
transform that which is no longer working for us, or is not
serving our highest good. As Scorpio is the sign of regeneration, where this lunation falls in one’s horoscope can indicate
the life area that is ripe for release and rebirth.
Utilize the transformative potential inherent in this potent
lunation to help you replace diminishing revenue sources,
overhaul outworn financial practices and strategies, or to
resolve sensitive issues around intimacy during the next four
weeks. The changes you make now will stimulate new growth
and creative enterprise in the months ahead.
The full Moon occurs mid-afternoon on the 14th, in 21°Aries,
and may augur the culmination of a professional partnership or
alliance. And yet, the potential for new, more progressive—per-
October winds down with a flurry of positive aspect patterns, beginning with Mercury’s trine to Neptune on the 29th, when a moment
of awareness could provide the solution to an old problem. Be open

this transit, or a previous source could dry up. Emotional insecurities can manifest as a desire to go out and shop!
Next, Mars adds impetus to the cosmic energy flow with a
supportive sextile to Saturn on the 30th, when hard work
and purposeful action win the day. Ambition is powerfully
stimulated now. You may also notice an increase in
stamina; put it to good, positive use. Take the initiative.
Act now, on business or career options.
A serendipitous sextile between Jupiter and Uranus perfects on
November 12th, which could be the harbinger of a sudden fortunate opportunity. At the very least, prospects should, in some
way, look brighter. Fresh input stimulates change, and future
plans may require some adjustment. An innovative solution to
a quandary may be found.
Mars concludes the major planetary aspect roster for October
with a free-flowing trine to Uranus on Halloween (31st).
Connect with friends or groups with whom you resonate to discuss co-creative ventures. Put your original ideas into action.
November’s full moon culminates on the 13th in 22°Taurus, at
1:17am, EST (10:17pm, on the 12th, PST), a juncture at which
finances could be brought into sharp focus. This would be an
excellent time to reaffirm faith in yourself, and to discard debilitating or expensive habits, or to finally come to terms with
deep-rooted, self-sabotaging fears or phobias—particularly in
regard to money. An additional measure of emotional control
may be required for a day or two.
After five months in retrograde, Neptune, planet of mystery and
illusion, stations direct at 2:40am, EST on November 2nd
(11:40pm PDT on the 1st), a time around which confusion can
reign. It doesn't help that Daylight Savings Time ends at 2am
and we put the clocks back an hour. Neptune’s directional
shifts often coincide with strange or unexpected events, peculiar behavior, and anomalous weather or geophysical activities
for several days either side of its station. Don’t believe all that
you see or hear around this period, as all may not be as it
seems! Remain alert, be observant, and avoid jumping to conclusions or going to extremes. As Neptune is the planet of illusion—which is why it rules the movie industry—its influence
can be most beguiling, therefore its directional phase shift may
signal a reality check!
Adding to the distortion of reality these days—we may witness
events that may beggar belief!—is Mars’ square to Neptune on
Election Day (4th). Deception is rife, and the truth behind
actions or events may be intentionally obscured. Indeed, clarity
will almost certainly be lacking. Be alert to self-destructive
impulses, or giving vent to suppressed anger, as that’s a distinct
possibility now. Avoid seeking solace in artificial stimulants, as
one’s physical tolerance may be at a low ebb, and escapist tendencies prevail. Know where you’re going, for whom you’re
voting, and why. If necessary, seek guidance from within.
As if there was not enough instability in the air already on
November 4th, an unsettling Saturn-Uranus opposition perfects early in the morning, an augury that old routines or
strategies that clearly are not working must now change.
Perhaps this revolutionary trend will be reflected in the voting
today. In any case, circumstances have a way of conspiring to
help clarify where change may be needed. Difficulties with
friends, groups or official organizations is a distinct possibility. Somehow, circumstances beyond your control could
impede your progress around this juncture.
Venus enters the serious, business-like realm of Capricorn on
the 12th (after a powerful conjunction with Pluto late on the
11th) for a four-week sojourn. Its presence here demands that
relationships be taken more seriously. Business interests may
actually have greater appeal than pleasure pursuits now. A new
source of investment or working capital could appear during
www.earthstarmag.com
Once Mars enters Sagittarius on the 16th, be prepared to back
up your beliefs with action. Crusades and quests are in vogue
now, and religious, cultural, or political fervor may emerge, perhaps dramatically, in the weeks ahead. However, the wise will
not foist their beliefs on others. Even so, the pioneering spirit
abounds. The search is on for truth, understanding, and wisdom.
A modest expansion of current business activities is supported by a fine earthy trine between Jupiter and Saturn on the
21st. Indeed, economic and business enterprise on all levels
can flourish now. Make important financial or legal decisions.
Research business or educational opportunities.
When the sun begins its month-long transit of tropical
Sagittarius on the 21st, a more optimistic, uplifting influence
is infused into the ethers. Give some serious thought to your
dreams and visions for the future. Do you have the confidence, or indeed the resources, necessary to pursue them? If
not, resolve to make it so. A review of one’s values, philosophies, and ideals might prove helpful during the next month—
are they “up to speed” with today’s rapidly changing world?
Mercury joins the red planet in the expansive realm of
Sagittarius early on the 23rd (late evening 22nd, PST), fostering an increased desire to learn and to expand one's mind.
Communication channels are now wide open, and long-distance travel is favored. The exploration of foreign cultures and
philosophies can be both satisfying and educational. Review
your long-term goals.
The biggest shift in the force occurs as tiny, distant Pluto
enters tropical Capricorn at 9:05pm, EST on November 26th,
for a protracted transit lasting nearly sixteen years—until
March 23rd, 2023, in fact. In order to convey some idea of the
time scale involved in Pluto transits, during Pluto’s previous
transit through Capricorn the American Declaration of
Independence was made manifest! Our old, crystallized concepts, and life structures of the past, are about to be shattered.
The ‘right use of will’ and power is one of this transit’s most

important lessons. A powerful drive to be successful grows
steadily with Pluto in Capricorn, a slow burn transit that heralds a time to establish our inspirations, then work to make
them a reality.
A powerhouse of planetary portents prevail on Thanksgiving
Day (27th), when, first, Uranus stations direct in 19°Pisces,
within an hour of November’s expansive Sagittarius new
moon. Once revolutionary Uranus begins moving forward
again, the higher principles that Aquarius (the sign it rules)
represents come into play more prominently in our lives. Goal
setting is strongly favored now, as ambition is kindled, and the
revolutionary spirit abounds.
The arrival of the new moon, shortly before noon, in
06°Sagittarius, sounds a clarion call to review or upgrade your
educational objectives, or to expand your occupational horizons. In the spirit of openness bestowed by this lunation,
acknowledge and release any deep-rooted fears of failure that
may have been holding you back from realizing your full
potential. Sweeping changes are in the wind! Seek new
avenues of self-expression.
Mercury aligns in conjunction with Mars in 10°Sagittarius on
November 28th, inspiring action for what is right and in support of one’s beliefs. Freedom of speech will seem imperative.
Anticipate important announcements. There’s no beating
around the bush, here, communications are direct and to the
point. Thus, anticipate encountering argumentative and contentious individuals. Be enterprising—seize the initiative.
Make connections.
Following is a general overview of how the planetary trends for
October/November, 2008 apply to each sun sign.
If you know your rising sign (Ascendant), read that, too, for additional insights.
Aries
(March 20—April 19)
Mates and money go hand in pocket early in this
forecast period, when you may be at odds with a
partner, friend, or employer regarding a financial
situation. However, you have it in your power to completely
transform your financial fortunes. Take the initiative and forge
new alliances that support your endeavors. Incorporate the best
elements from the past into your plans for the future and release
that which, or whomever, no longer resonates with your values or
objectives. You’re keen to blaze new trails and explore pastures
new as the holiday season draws near. A measure of success and
acclaim may come your way, inspiring you to greater
accomplishments.

(April 19—May 20)
Life in general looks pretty good for Bull-clan
members in October. While you may not always
get your way at work, and there may be one or two concerns over
money, as the month progresses, a key element necessary to your
success and satisfaction will fall into place, and you will feel
more in control of your destiny—particularly where finances are
concerned. Resolve to overcome any bad habits or unhelpful
behavior patterns around money; this will help to increase your
sense of security. Later in this forecast period, you feel inspired
to broaden your horizons. You may consider higher education,
and enroll in a course or workshop that would support a career
objective. Or, you may ponder the concept of sharing your wisdom with others in a teaching or consulting capacity.
Gemini
(May 20—June 21)
A creative project may need retooling or modifying
in some way to give it more of an edge. Once your
sign’s ruler, Mercury, stations direct on October 15th, you’ll have
a clearer sense of what changes may be necessary. There’s
potential for a new job or work assignment during this forecast
period, which would provide a considerable boost to your sense

of security. Family or domestic obligations may vie for time
you’d rather devote to professional or educational pursuits.
Likewise, a partner might also make demands on your time and
talents, so keep your schedule flexible. A financial windfall of
sorts is possible, as the holiday season draws near, or funding for
a project could be yours for the asking.
Cancer
(June 21—July22)
You may be feeling more at ease these days and
happy with life, in general, and yet, periods of inner
restlessness may be a sign that the ‘big picture’needs
to change. Some may consider a relocation, perhaps for work, and
to improve your financial and career prospects. Others might be
seeking a more appropriate environment in which to grow and
thrive. Your thoughts, these days, often turn to more practical, serious matters, rather than mere frivolities, and, likely, issues that
have an impact on your sense of security. Your creative enterprise
is your strong suit now, and it could quickly lead you to both professional and financial gains. Your closest relationships are a
source of great joy and support now. Consider a new, more vigorous, health and fitness regimen; get in shape for the holidays.
Leo
(July 22—August 23)
You may need to keep your schedule flexible early
in this forecast period, to accommodate any sudden
changes in plans or to your schedule. Communications can be
both stimulating and perplexing, with food for thought aplenty.
Some deft financial management or a reprioritizing of funds
may become necessary in order to continue with a project or
pastime close to your heart. And you’re equal to the task!
Activities around the home increase, taking up a great deal of
your time and energy through mid-November, culminating
with the stimulating, expansive Sagittarius new moon (27th).
An increase in salary, or of your ‘stock in trade’, is quite
possible now. Your services appear to be much in demand.

Down To Earth Astrology
Virgo
(August 23—September 23)
A major theme early in this forecast period is
wealth production, and how best to go about it.
A partner or close associate could pass along some
information that you are able to convert to money in the
bank. Key challenges come from partners, significant others,
and work associates, who may not see things your way.
Nonetheless, there can also be periods of easy-going
cooperation, during which much can be accomplished. Use
your creative ingenuity to guide your activities. Indeed,
bright ideas are your strong suit now, and could win you
kudos with those who matter.
Libra
(September 23—October 23)
The early weeks of fall are ‘prime time’ for
Scales-clan members, while the sun glides easily
through your solar first house, emboldening, encouraging and
energizing you to move forward decisively with personal
projects and plans. Your creative energies may be directed
towards wealth production now. When coupled with your
ingenuity you could quickly manifest a way to dramatically
increase your cash flow. Home and hearth are comforting to
you these days, and you may decide to redecorate. Anticipate
periodic emotional upheavals once distant Pluto enters
Capricorn and your solar fourth house on November 26th for
a protracted stay. Its presence here is also a great boost to your
intestinal fortitude!
Scorpio
(October 23—November 22)
Pace yourself early in this forecast period, put
your energies only into essential tasks. Focus on
your priorities, one of which may be generating a sustainable, more enduring cash flow. Prepare to move forward
with personal projects, as once the sun enters your sign on
October 22nd you’ll have ample energy and determination
to accomplish your goals. Later in this period you’ll be more
inclined to marshal and direct these forces towards opening
up new avenues of income. Some of your ideas or novel
notions could be pure gold, so be sure to treat them as a valued resource, and capitalize on them whenever possible.
Sagittarius
(November 22—December 21)
Upheavals on the home front may be linked
somehow with work. While your professional
activities are very definitely directed towards generating
maximum income, there may also be domestic issues to
resolve. A romance may bloom, for those available, or an
existing relationship could provide a few sparks of
excitement. Consider your hopes and wishes for the future,
but hold off on making major changes till the latter part of
this forecast period. Reflect upon your experiences this past
year, and resolve to take what you learn to the bank. The
new moon in your sign on November 27th is your signal to
go for the gold!
Capricorn
(December 21—January 19)
Your wisdom and experience could make
professional gains possible during this two-month
forecast period. But after distant Pluto enters your sign on
November 26th your manifestation powers begin to stir
anew, powerfully stimulating your ambitions. Meanwhile,
consider your plans for the future, and what financing will
be required to implement them. “If you build it, they will
come”; all it takes is belief. As the holiday season draws
near, you could have good reason to feel yourself to be the
luckiest person in town with, it seems, the Midas touch.
Wield wealth wisely when it appears.
Aquarius
(January 19—February 18)
Developments at work could have you reassessing
your future and considering your options. Any
uncertainty around income may be relieved by a new
professional opportunity, that might arise as a result of past
good work, or your experience in a particular field. Keep your
hopes and dreams alive by decisively taking advantage of
breaks that may come your way. Indeed, your dreams and
meditations can be a rich source of inspiration, providing
insights into ways you could add to your income. Attend to
any domestic issues that may crop up without delay, so that
you can devote your energies to more productive career
related activities.
Pisces
(February 18—March 20)
A yen to travel could have some Fish-clan
members heading for distant climes, while
others may seek to expand their sphere of
activities closer to home. Your sense of purpose, or mission
in life, may have undergone some changes in recent years,
and you’re keen to make any necessary adjustments, and to
strike out in a new direction, with a renewed sense of
purpose. Your imagination is powerfully rekindled by fresh
information, galvanizing some, more adventurous, Pisceans
to embark on a personal quest. Seldom have you felt so
outgoing, and open to new experiences. Indeed, it may be
this very energy about you that attracts a new professional
opportunity as the holiday season draws near.

The Short
WALK to
FREEDOM
By Reverend Evrol Officer, LUT
obel Peace Prize winner and former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela
once said, “There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere.” I was first made aware
of his statement by one of his grandsons,
with whom I developed a very close relationship while
he attended college in Boston. We had many great discussions on President Mandela’s powerful statement,
and then once, on his return from a summer vacation in
South Africa, this young man presented me with one of
my most treasured gifts—a large poster of President
Mandela with the inscription. The framed poster now
hangs in my home as a personal reminder of the thought,
the man who uttered it, and of his grandson.
N
President Mandela’s decision to claim his freedom from
anger, hatred, bitterness, situations, principalities, and
personalities has been a tremendous example to me of
the ability within each of us to rise beyond our circumstances. I am forever grateful to him for demonstrating
our ability to redirect our hurts and anger towards forgiveness. His decision to choose love and forgiveness
over revenge and hate spared millions of lives after he
was released from 27 years of torturous imprisonment.
I firmly believe that the concept of freedom begins in
our minds, and in order to experience and enjoy personal freedom we must first emancipate ourselves from
mental slavery. Once each of us is able to accept and act
as the only person who has dominion of our mind, the
walk to freedom becomes a very short one. No one can
make you sad, glad, or mad; only you can.
You’re probably thinking, “I’m not in bondage,” and I
can appreciate your thought. But the truth is that sometime, somewhere in our lives, we have imprisoned our16
EARTH STAR
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2008
selves by our thoughts and our words. In the beginning
of the Gospel of St. John, it says, “In the beginning was
the Word, and the Word was made flesh.” The power of
our thoughts, the power of our words, these create our
life, and ensure our bondage or our freedom.
Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount gives us the principles for finding inner peace. Some seem quite contrary
to popular thinking, but when we consider them, we can
recognize that their truth speaks loudly to us. He says,
“Bless those who curse you.” At first glance you might
say “If a person curses me, I’m going to curse them
back. I’m not going to let them get away with stepping
all over me. I can stand up for myself.”
In fact, we teach our kids to stand up for themselves. Let
no one step on you. Let NO ONE hurt you. And yet Jesus
appears to be telling us to pray for those who mistreat us,
to pray and use the power of our words to spread love
wherever we go. We don’t have to let anger build in us
because someone is attempting to mistreat us. We can
use thoughts of love, and use our words to express love.
We can create healing energy wherever we go. We can
let our ideas and words be impeccable when it comes to
setting out on what can be a short walk to freedom.
Sometimes I find it difficult to hear someone from a pulpit trying to inject discord and hate in the politics of our
country or the world. I feel that it has no place, coming
from those who could be guiding us toward peace and
love. I pray that we all can be more aware of what we
think and say about others, and act from a place of
understanding. When one of us expresses preference for
one person over another and loses sight of the truth that
God loves all of us as his children, that we are brothers
www.earthstarmag.com
and sisters, regardless of color or creed or sex – when
one of us speaks of hate or dislike for another, or spreads
gossip about another person, I pray that we all can
become aware of who we truly are, and move past fear
and anger to freedom.
When we turn away from the anger, the hurt, the gossip,
we can reach out and embrace the world with love. We
may have differing opinions in some matters. We may
support different political viewpoints. But does that
mean that we aren’t all children of a divine creator? All
of us are made in the image and likeness of God, and we
deserve love and caring from one another. We need only
to stop, consider, and
appreciate differences
of opinion, and not use
these differences as
reasons to hate one
another. Give to everyone who asks of you;
treat others the same
way you want them to
treat you. This is the
guidance Jesus gives
us. It’s the direction,
the guidance for the
short walk to freedom.
Many of us were born
and grew up in circumstances where gossip
and negative opinion
were commonplace
ways to attempt to
boost self-worth. We
witnessed this behavior, we absorbed it, and
before long we thought
nothing about using
our words to spread
gossip, to express disrespect or hate about
others who weren’t like us, who didn’t look or act or
think as we did.
We forgot that the words that come forth out of our
mouths reflect the meditation of our hearts. Even now
without thinking we may laugh, or joke, insult, or disrespect others. We must agree to make our words impeccable. We must make our thoughts and words expressions of love and caring, not weapons of hatred and
harm. These positive actions will remove us from the
prison of fear and uncertainty and set us on the short
www.earthstarmag.com
road to freedom.
I encourage all of us to find and take that short road to
freedom. Let us all decide to be impeccable with our
thoughts and words. Let us encourage and spread that
attitude to others. Let’s not succumb to old habits of verbal insult and injury that play out in the words we hear
on television or read in newspaper and Internet commentaries. There may come a temptation to spread or
share the slurs and abusive ideas. “Here’s a good one;
did you hear this?” Can we be strong enough to refuse
to pay attention to the thoughts that offend and imprison
everyone involved, including ourselves? Can we turn
away from the gossip
and disrespect for the
integrity of our brothers
and sisters?
Let us treat others the
same way that we
would want them to
treat us. Let’s stop and
think: Would I want
someone to be saying
that about me? We do
not need to chain our
minds and ourselves to
a dungeon of fear-filled,
angry, vindictive, and
negative thoughts and
words. We can act out
of love, caring, and
respect for others. Like
Nelson Mandela, we
can set aside the past
and set foot on the short
road to freedom. It
won’t always be easy,
but how great the destination!

If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will
see your parents and all generations of your ancestors.
All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present
in your body. You are the continuation of each of
these people. —Thich Nhat Hanh
To sum up, although each form of thought of the
essence is an appearance, it also reflects a reality that
is, however, always dependent for its existence as well
as for its qualities and properties on broader contexts
and deeper levels. —David Bohm
R
eal CR (concensus reality) fields such as
electromagnetism, gravity, temperature,
and air pressure influence the body in
measurable ways. However, immeasurable, personal nonconsensual fields, feelings, dreams, and fantasies always accompany those
very real forces. The subtlest field is the force of silence.
You feel but cannot easily verbalize its intent until it has
unfolded in dreaming or appeared approximately as an
event in reality.
In many ways, we are products of our parents,
ancestors, and ghosts of the dead. Here, we will experiment with “backaction”; how awareness affects intentional fields, genetics, and symptoms. What you feel
touches not only your momentary body states but also
your inherited gene expressions, your present life, and
the life you inadvertently pass along to others. In other
words, your feelings influence the future, just as all the
generations that preceded you are touching you now.
What we call mutations and genetic accidents are a possible connecting point between genes and dreams.
How Psychology May Influence Genetics
To consider how psychology might influence our
genetics either directly or through apparently accidental
mutations, consider the similarities in the structure of
fantasies and gene expressions.
Psychological patterns that appear to be inherited, or
at least passed down, can be found in childhood dreams.
These patterns are narrations or recountings, a counting
or numerical idea, as are points on a line. In any case,
stories and dreams are lines or strings of basic images,
portraying shared human phenomenology, which Jung
called archetypes or archaic images; they are found in
the myths and fairy tales of people from all over the
world.
According to Jung, the archetypes are inherited
characteristics, “seeds,” behind images or clusters of
images. These recountings (the German word was
18
EARTH STAR
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2008
erzählung, which originates from “number”) are a psychological parallel or counterpart to genetic expression,
which also is a patterned account occurring on a string
(chromosomes) of countable inherited units of genes.
Based upon the many hundreds or thousands of
childhood dreams or recountings I have heard from both
children and adults (claiming to remember their childhood dreams), it seems to me that such dream recountings are assemblages of units predicting our physical
and psychological behavior. This predictability makes
them roughly analogous to the predictions about our
bodies which can be made knowing our biological
genetics.
Almost a century ago, Jung pointed out that standard collective images, such as those of the great mother, the divine child, the ruler, etc., are found in cultures
the world over. He called these images archetypes and
implied they were the analogies of biological patterns
such as instincts. When a series of these images appears
in folk stories, it is called a saga or fairy tale. When such
a series appears in a person, it is called a dream.
When many people believe in a given tale, it
becomes a saga.
Over time, sagas lose their personal and local identification and evolve into collective myths. Jung
believed that the mythic images seen in dreams are
inherited phenomenological blueprints coming from the
experiences of our ancestors. Jung’s work evolved from
his own studies and from the ideas of Freud, who was
more biologically oriented and who thought mainly in
terms of intrapersonal drives such as the sex drive or the
death Wish.
When I was a psychology student at the Jung
Institute in Zurich in the 1960s, one of my teachers gave
me a copy of one of Jung’s most interesting (yet, as far
as I know, unpublished) works, an unedited manuscript
called “Kinderträume” (“Childhood Dreams”). Based
on the dreams reported in that manuscript, Jung points
out that repetitive childhood dreams predict the future
occupation of the individual dreamers.
My research generalized this finding. I discovered
that those childhood dreams not only predict the future
occupation of dreamers but their future body experiences. For example, a woman’s childhood dream about
a lion scratching at the curtain of a window not only
symbolizes the lion-like power she met as a child and
will meet and develop later in life, but also symbolizes
the itchy or scratching feeling that did appear in a lifelong chronic skin problem. The lion scratched the window curtain in the same way the adult scratched what
turned out to be a chronic skin irritation.
That lion is an “inherited” instinctual pattern, a psy-

chological pattern also associated with the dreamer’s
childhood home. In any case, symbols (such as the lion
or curtain) in childhood dreams may be thought of as
units along a string, a count, or an account. The essence,
or Jung might say the archetype, behind clusters of such
units (such as a lion scratching a curtain) might be
thought of as “psychological genes.” Both genes and
archetypes appear in dreams and behavior as clusters of
symbols and patterns of behavior.
Childhood dreams, such as the lion dream, are
dreamland expression of personal myths—long-term
patterns derived from “psychogenetic” codes. Further,
like genes, sections of these patterns are sensitive to the
everyday mind, or transformable depending upon the
imaginations of the dreamer.
Assuming this connection between our genes and
dreams, we may suspect that early childhood dreams are
expressions of underlying patterns or archetypes, which
I shall call “dreamgenes.” In biological reality, our
genetic expression appears as units of inheritance; in
psychological reality our long-time patterns appear as
symbols in childhood dreams.
The Influence of Consciousness
on Dreams and Genes
Changing people’s relationships to their psychological
inheritance, to their dreamgenes, is one of psychology’s
main tasks. Whether as a Jungian, Freudian, Gestalt,
Adlerian, or process-oriented dream worker, therapists
interact with dream figures and childhood memories of
patients by using, following, analyzing, and battling
them to create coherence between the everyday mind
and the totality of the human soul. Bettering your relationship to those early figures changes your experience
of life.
From a process-oriented perspective, here is where
the parallels between psychology and medical biology
end: at the point of transforming genes, both biological
and psychological. Whereas biology and medicine speak
in terms of advantageous or disadvantageous consensusreality events such as healthy or ill genetic combinations, process-oriented psychologies speak in terms of
consensus-reality events and dreamland processes
including the potential meaning and purpose of problems and events.
In other words, from the CR viewpoint, a particular
arrangement of genes and dreams may be judged as
good or bad. But in dreamland, illness or accidents can
be seen as highly meaningful events, often pointing to
life-enriching experiences.
An example is a person who suffered radiation poi-
20
EARTH STAR
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2008
soning. Her problem was diagnosed as serious and predicted to be fatal within months. However, she dreamed
she had been “freed from the most dreadful prison.” Her
dream told her that she was not sick, but being freed.
After working on that dream, she decided to free herself
from particular life circumstances. Twenty-five years
after she was supposed to have died, she told me that she
still had many body problems, but felt as free as could
be. Was this luck?
Anecdotal evidence gives me the impression that the
physical future of dreamers actively interacting with the
dreamland aspect of body experiences is no longer predictable. Getting in touch with the deepest part of yourself, your pilot wave, makes the path feel certain in
dreaming (e.g., freedom). You feel better, more whole,
and sometimes even detached from the symptom
process in consensus reality.
The job of psychology and Rainbow Medicine is to
follow the deepest path of an individual: to explore,
relate to, co-create, recreate, reconstruct, or adapt to the
configurations of their dreams and subatomic body
states. Biological medicine working at the CR level
alone aims at changing troubled or disturbing genetic
combinations as if they were aberrations instead of
meaningful occurrences.
Nevertheless the following question remains to be
answered: If certain medical procedures can repair some
genetic problems, can psychology do the same? If so,
how might relating to the dreamland context of real
events interact with body experience and those rejected
genetic expressions? To answer this question, let’s
explore these possibilities in terms of your experiences.
To introduce this exploration, I discuss different
approaches to working with dreams and body situations,
and then I apply these approaches to working with your
psychogenetic situation.
Childhood Dreams—
Dreamgenes in Conflict
As an example, let me speak about my own childhood
dream and see how it connects with my physical genetics. The first dream I can remember occurred when I was
four years old. In the dream, I was a little boy polishing
my father’s car. As I polished away, a big growling bear
came by. “Grrrrrrrrr!” it said. He scared me so much, I
ran into my father’s car for protection. Relentlessly, that
bear got in the car too and continued to chase me; I was
running for my life in ever greater circles around that car
until I woke up.
The basic units or dreamgenes seen in that dream
are my father’s car and the bear chasing me. Both the
www.earthstarmag.com
bear and my ‘father’s car are linked to feelings I had
about my family. My dad was a hardworking, goodhearted, predictable, quiet guy. His philosophy was
“Don’t do much in life, just enjoy the moment, work,
pay your bills, and settle down. Polish the car.”
But the bear is very different. I associate the bear
energy with my mother’s energetic, unpredictable
nature. As a child, I wanted to be more like my father,
but my mother’s energy has always chased me. She
never seemed to know what to do with her energy. (And
I never know what to do with mine!) In my dream, the
bear seemed to disagree with me; the bear was angry I
was polishing the car—that is, angry that I was identifying only with my father. Even as a child I knew the bear
was upset with me for having marginalized his seemingly wild energy.
In a way, polishing the car is part of the father gene
in me, and the bear chasing me is part of the mother gene
in me. Though my parents basically got along with each
other, their energies conflicted inside me, and this childhood dream shows how my dreamgenes are in conflict
with each other.
Childhood dreams typically show a combination of
genes from both parents, and often a conflict of some
sort. By favoring one of these genes (the car), we marginalize the other (the bear). Marginalization comes
about spontaneously and unconsciously. By identifying
ourselves with only some of our parts, we create an identity based on marginalizing other parts. These marginalized parts almost always turn up as symptoms or as
scary dream figures seeking attention.
By identifying with my father, who marginalized his
own wildness, I was chased about by bear-like energies
and pressures. One of my earlier chronic body symptoms that later improved was wild swings in blood pressure. (The men on my father’s side of the family typically suffered from blood pressure problems.)
Here is another example of dreamgenes at work. I
am reminded of a client who suffered from lung problems. He could not remember a childhood dream but
recalled a first memory of his mother, who was being
mean to him. He said his major body symptom was
emphysema, probably due to smoking. He worried about
this symptom because his father had died of lung cancer.
He associated his mother with the mean feeling of
cramping in his lungs. She was always bitter and
cramped. To work on his memory, he shape-shifted into
the figure of his mother and explored her essence. To his
surprise, behind her meanness was coldness, a sort of
detachment and a “quietness” about relationships. This
warmhearted, “motherly” man realized he had spent his
life trying to compensate for his mother’s coldness, and
that now, from the world of her essence, he found a sort
of cool detachment and freedom from always being nice
to people, and he was much happier.
Best of all, his new behavior affected his lungs.
Being cooler and less attached to others relaxed his
lungs immediately and resolved the cramping. After his
work with this dreaming process, he got better, and his
medical doctor later thought the diagnosis of emphysema had been incorrect.
Exercise: Dreams, Symptoms, Genetics
Childhood dreams seem to show psychological as
well as biological/genetic components. The next exercise gives you a chance to explore these ideas for yourself, to see how your dreams, genetics, and symptoms
are connected. You will need to recall either the first
childhood dream you can remember or, if you can’t
remember one, the very first event you can remember.
Then you will be asked to explore methods of recreating
the dream (or dreamgenes) in a theatrical fashion and
relate it to your body experiences.
Write down the earliest dream you can remember
(or the first childhood or teenage memory). If you can
recall several dreams (or memories), choose the most
powerful of these.
Sketch two simple figures from your dream. If you
dreamed (or can remember) only one figure—such as
a bird flying or falling—consider the second figure as
the one implied in what you are doing. For example, if
you are flying, consider the sky or the ground as second images.
Could these two figures be related to your mother
and her family or your father and his (or your imagination of these people, if you never met them)? For
example, the car in my dream is related to my father
and his father (who gave him that car), and the bear is
connected with my mother’s energy.
Sketch or draw an outline of your body. Now sense
your body and ask yourself with what parts of your
body these dream characteristics are associated. First
just meditate and sense your body, and then sketch
these figures on your body sketch. Do you have symptoms located where you placed your dream figures?
For example, I have my dad in my elbows, where I
also have dry skin, and I have always had a sense of
pressure in my chest.
Once your figure is complete, work on your
childhood dream. Ask yourself: Which is the most difficult dream figure for me today? For example, that
bear’s animal energy is still the most difficult part of

In an article he wrote for BBC Wildlife magazine,

A nearby hippopotamus witnessed the attack and
chose to defend the victim. The furious hippo—capable
of biting a crocodile in two—charged; the crocodile
released the impala and swam away.
Then the hippo gently nudged the impala to the
shore with its nose and onto higher ground. Not content
to simply rescue it, the hippo stood guard against other
predators for fifteen minutes. Then the two-ton animal
began sniffing it and gently licking its wounds. Twice
the hippo took the impala’s head into its mouth in what
seemed to be an attempt to get it to stand. But it was
mortally wounded. Since hippopotamuses are strictly
vegetarian, its interest in the dying impala was purely
altruistic.
This story is all the more amazing because it is completely documented. A Life magazine photographer,
Dick Reucassel, was present for the incident and recorded it all on film.
As I did the research to substantiate this amazing
story, which had been told to me by a friend who
remembered it from childhood, I had to go through
many old copies of Life and other resources to find the
original article. To my astonishment, in the course of
looking I found yet another hippopotamus-saves-impala
story. This one was reported by Harry Erwee, a
researcher at the Masuma Dam in Hwange National
Park, Zimbabwe, and substantiated by other witnesses.
Nine wild African dogs were pursuing an impala.
Half the pack, the witnesses could see, was waiting in
the bushes on the other side of some water while the first
half chased the now tiring impala toward their waiting
companions. A hippopotamus swam toward the weakening buck and prevented it from going to the other side
where the dogs were laying in wait; instead, it nudged it
in the opposite direction. As the exhausted impala lost
energy, the hippo would nudge it forward. When the duo
finally reached safe ground, the impala was too exhausted to make it onto dry land, so the hippo nudged it with
its snout. The impala began shivering violently. Too
weak to make it on its own, it was on the verge of col-

hen Anne Marie Schilling’s children adopted an injured red-breasted robin, she never
expected that it would remain with them as
their devoted friend.
Many times she tried to return the bird to the wild,
but it was devoted to the young boy and girl who had
saved it. The woman relented to their pleadings to allow
the bird to accompany the three on a long car-trailer trip,
planning to get rid of the bird when they returned home.
But the bird’s heroism changed all that.
One night while Anne and her two children were
asleep in the bunks of their trailer, the bird suddenly
began shrieking. He landed by Anne’s ear, shrilled, then
flew furiously to the front of the trailer. When Anne got
up, she realized what had alarmed the bird: A large
idling tractor-trailer rig had pulled up next to their trailer so that rig’s vertical exhaust pipe was spewing its
fumes into an open window—and it was asphyxiating
them! The driver was nowhere to be found. She closed
the window, aired out her trailer and, with the robin’s
help, aroused her children from their potentially deadly
sleep. The next day, the family drove along a country
road with the bird singing along with the radio, something he loved to do. Suddenly he became perturbed and
flew madly around the inside of the car. Anne stopped
the car. The robin flew out the car window, around the
trailer, and back. The woman started to scold the bird—
who chirped sadly at this undeserved punishment—but
just then her children called, “Mother, come quick.” She
found that the trailer hitch had broken; had they continContinued on Page 34

myself to manage.
After identifying this energy or
figure, act out this figure, remembering your playful, childlike
nature. Use at least one of your
hands. Enjoy yourself. Be a child
and act out that figure.
While moving and making
sounds, feel deeply into the figure
and try to get to the essence of
that figure and its energy. This
exercise has no one correct
response. We are looking for a
feeling. We are searching for the
basic tendency of that energy,
before it became an image and
became so dramatic. For example, my bear’s energy was essentially the tendency to move freely
in a oneness with nature.
When you are ready, shapeshift into that figure and live in
the time and the space of that
essence. Get into this parallel
world and just be there. Live
there. Try to live in the world of
that essence. For example, I
imagine living in the world
where things just happen in the
oneness of nature and there is no
second-guessing, no evaluation,
no weighing and measuring.
Try to experience this world as
fully as you can. Do you see
images and hear sounds?
From the world of the essence
that you are now in, look back at
your childhood dream or memory
and explore how you would
recreate all or part of that dream.
For example, I would make my
father more like the essence of
the bear, more fluid in his ways,
less mechanical.
As this essence, interact with,
change, influence, or recreate
that dream. Dream the dream on
or create a new resolution or
story, using the same or different
figures. In other words, look
back at the dream or memory and
think how you would influence it
www.earthstarmag.com
as this essence. Take time and actually tell yourself
a story. Make it up. Let the essence world create
things.
Act this new story out and then write it down.
Create a theater. Use music or movement, rhythms
or songs, poetry or art. Use your imagination, have
an open creative mind, something like a child. For
example, in my recreation, the bear that was chasing me becomes a dancing teacher who dances with
me and my father.
Give yourself plenty of time. This is an unpredictable and creative act on your part. Then look at
the new story that you created and ask yourself:
Why did I not create or dream this story in the first
place? What was your original dream working on
when you were a child? Was it reacting to your tendency to marginalize one part and favor another?
What circumstances did not allow your essence to
unfold as it has today? How have you, or could you,
change? What basic elements of you are changing?
What basic dreamgenes? What attitudes in your
conscious mind?
Let’s connect these dreams and fantasies with
your body. Take a moment and reexperience your
resolution and the feeling that came out of that story
that you just created. Feel it and express it with your
whole body in movement. Dance it with your hands
and your arms and your whole body, if you can.
Notice how your movements influence your chronic symptom area. Notice what kind of effect occurs
in that symptom area.
How might this story influence what you are feeling and doing these days? For example, just now I
am editing this manuscript, and I can imagine doing
it in a more dance-like manner.
Reflecting on the Results
In your everyday life you probably see your body
symptoms as problems that you want to change.
Marginalizing a parallel dreamworld element (such as
the bear) in everyday life corresponds to experiencing
(or projecting) that bear as an irritating friend in relationships and/or as body symptoms. Not marginalizing that particular parallel world makes you more
coherent. Psychologically, your attachment to your
everyday CR identity provokes your pilot wave,
which is a sum of parallel worlds, to accentuate that
parallel dream world element. If you irritate one of
your parallel worlds (the bear) in order to maintain
your identity, that particular parallel world stands out
in your awareness in the form of a symptom.

YOGA Pose
By Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman
f you only learn one yoga posture, Legs-Upthe-Wall Pose gets our vote. This is one of the
most therapeutic poses in yoga — allowing you
to fully relax and rejuvenate in less time than a
nap. Once you try it, you’ll understand why our
students even practice this pose at work!
I
Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose encourages smooth, easy
breathing that soothes the nervous system helping to
relieve headaches, insomnia and anxiety. It relaxes the
digestive organs, helping to alleviate indigestion and
nausea. This inverted posture helps reduce varicose
veins and swollen feet, and also gently stretches the
back of the legs waking up tired, sore legs and feet. With
the return of blood from the legs to the heart, the circulatory system functions with ease and helps support the
lymphatic system in removing waste and toxins.
You’ll need a clear wall and one thick, firm blanket.
Practice for three to ten minutes. We’ve included three
versions for you to try. If you have tight hamstrings,
you’ll find Version 1 the most relaxing because your legs
will not be stretched against the wall. For Version 3,
you’ll need one yoga bolster (or two thick blankets).
Caution: Do not do Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose if you have
serious back, neck or eye problems.
Version 1: Crossed Legs
1 Sit with your right shoulder, right hip and right legs
against the wall.
2 Exhale as you lower your back while swinging your
legs onto the wall. (Everyone feels awkward doing this
26
EARTH STAR
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2008
the first few times!)
3 Bend your legs into a crossed-legs position with your
bottom leg resting against the wall. Your butt also will be
against the wall.
4 Relax your back flat on the floor.
5 Rest your arms on the floor with the palms of your
hands facing up.
6 If your forehead is lower than your chin, place a
folded blanket under your head.
7 Relax your head and throat.
8 Enjoy the easy, gentle opening of your hips as the
thighs rest into the hip sockets.
9 Listen to the smooth rhythm of your breath.
10 After a few minutes, uncross your legs and cross
them with the other leg on top.
11 When you’re ready to come out of the pose, uncross
your legs and hug your knees `into your chest, and then
roll over to your right side for 20 seconds or more.
12 Use your arms to bring yourself to a seated position.
13 Sit with crossed legs and take a few minutes to feel
the results.
Version 2: Legs straight up the wall
1 Sit with your right shoulder, right hip and right legs
against the wall.
2 Exhale as you lower your back while swinging your
legs onto the wall.
3 Straighten your legs.
4 Experiment with the distance of your legs and butt
from the wall until you feel comfortable without any
pulling or strain in your back. (You may need to bend
your knees slightly.) Press the tops of your thighs (clos-
www.earthstarmag.com
est to your pelvis) toward the wall.
5 Relax your hips on the floor.
6 Rest your arms on the floor with the palm of your
hands facing up.
7 If your forehead is lower than your chin, place a folded blanket under your head.
8 Soften the skin of your forehead and feel the softness
all around the eyes.
9 Listen to your breath.
10 When you’re ready to come out of the pose, cross
your legs and rest them against the wall.
11 Hug your knees into your chest and roll over to your
right side for 20 seconds or more.
12 Use your arms to bring yourself to a seated position.
13 Sit quietly for a few minutes.
Version 3: Legs straight up the wall with hips
lifted up by yoga bolster or blankets folded
in a rectangle.
1 Place the long edge of the yoga bolster (or one
or two thick blankets folded into a rectangle) a
couple of inches from the wall.
2 Sit close to the wall with your right shoulder,
right hip and right legs against the wall.
3 Exhale as you lower your back while swinging
your legs onto the wall. Straighten your legs.
4 The edge of the bolster or blanket closest to the
wall should be supporting your upper pelvis and
the far edge should be under the bottom tips of the
shoulder blades. Your shoulders are on the floor.
Experiment with the distance of your pelvis from
the wall and the position of your yoga bolster (or
blankets) until you feel comfortable without any
pulling or strain in your back. You may need to
bend your knees slightly.
5 Rest your arms on the floor with the palm of
your hands facing up.
6 If your forehead is lower than your chin, place
a folded blanket under your head.
7 Relax your head, throat and belly.
8 Release the curves of your spine into the support of the bolster or blanket.
9 Listen to the rhythm of your breath.
10 When you’re ready to come out of the pose,
cross your legs and rest them against the wall for
a few seconds or longer.
11 Gently scoot back moving your pelvis off the
bolster and then take the soles of the feet together on the bolster and let the knees drop open to the
bolster (or blankets) in a modified version of
Reclined Cobbler’s Pose. Rest for 20 seconds or
www.earthstarmag.com
more.
12 Hug your knees into your chest; roll over to your
right side for 20 seconds or more.
13 Use your arms to bring yourself to a seated position.
14 Sit quietly.
Play with the basic principles of this pose while listening to your body and asking what it needs. To see our
video clip demonstrating Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose, visit
http://www.gaiamyogaclub.com/bonus.
Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman are world-renowned
yoga instructors who have been featured in numerous
best-selling yoga DVDs. Recently they launched the
Gaiam Yoga Club (http://www.gaiamyogaclub.com), an
online 12-week yoga program for all levels.
This easy therapeutic yoga posture, Legs-Up-Wall Pose, is as
relaxing as a nap. Version 3 uses a yoga bolster (or two thick
blankets); however, the other two versions don’t need support
unless you want a blanket to cushion your head.

AYURVEDA
EVERYDAY
By Josh Liteky
n today’s world it is increasingly important that
we learn to take care of our own health, in a
very natural way that is in tune with nature.
Ayurveda is the oldest form of medicine in the
world and there are simple techniques that
everyone can do every day to create a good state of
health and maintain it over the long term.
I
The word “ayurveda” is composed of 2 parts: ayur and
veda. “Ayur” means life or life span and “veda” means
knowledge. So taken together ayurveda means knowledge of lifespan. If a person knows how to take care of
their own health in a natural way, they will gain knowledge that will help them live a healthy life. We have all
heard the expression that ‘knowledge is power.’ If you
have the basic knowledge of how to be proactive and
actually create a good state of health for yourself over
your life, you will feel great and empowered.
Ayurveda looks at the body as one whole entity. It is
based on a very holistic viewpoint rather than focusing
on the specific parts like we do in western medicine. In
ayurvedic terms, we look at the body in terms of doshas
– which are like the important energetic aspects of the
body. These doshas are called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Vata is the leading dosha of the body, and it is responsible for all the movement systems in the body (circulatory, etc) It is always moving everything around the body.
Pitta is mainly metabolism and digestion (think fire!)
and Kapha is structure (bones, etc).
So in looking at the body ayurvedically, it is all about
the balance of the doshas. Excellent health is achieved
when Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are all in balance. In our
28
EARTH STAR
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2008
day and age, this is nearly impossible with all the hustle
and bustle of life. Vata is the primary dosha and when it
goes out of balance, in time the other doshas go out of
balance as well…and this is what causes disease. It
takes time to get out of balanced to the state of disease
and if we are in tune with our own doshic balance, then
we can catch potential problems early, long before they
progress to the state of disease.
In a nutshell, ayurveda is all about creating balance
among the doshas. How is this accomplished? Well, the
first step is to have an ayurvedic consultation with someone qualified to assess your doshic balance. This is
accomplished through a pulse analysis. An expert
trained in reading pulses can detect all of a person’s
imbalances in their pulse and then makes recommendations to help bring the body back in balance.
The recommendations made by the expert cover a variety of areas. They can be specific herbs, diet recommendations, exercise and meditation recommendations,
and specific types of ayurvedic treatments designed to
help detoxify the body and bring it back into a balanced
state of health. More on these treatments in a minute.
So, then the question becomes, what can YOU do everyday to get into and maintain an excellent state of health
for yourself? There are some simple yet powerful things
you can do each and every day that will just cost you
some discipline.
Here is some basic knowledge:
Remember what we learned about Vata, Pitta, and
Kapha in the body? Well, nature itself also has the same
www.earthstarmag.com
cycles and energetic doshas! What I
mean is that there are specific times of
day that correspond to Vata, Pitta, and
Kapha…and if you do things during
those times that favor balancing the
doshas, you will benefit. It is that cut
and dry.
Here are the doshas and their corresponding times of day:
2:00am – 6:00am Vata time
6:00am – 10:00am Kapha time
10:00am – 2:00pm Pitta time
And these cycles repeat themselves
every 12 hours….so if you were to do
things that were not favored by the
doshas during these times, your health
will suffer. A classic example is staying
up late every night. In ayurvedic terms it is best to go to
bed before 10pm at night and get up early in the morning before 6am. If you do this every day, day in and day
out, your health will improve. You will be getting more
and more in tune with these rhythms and cycles of
nature. Other good things to do are eating according to
your dosha type, and always favoring freshly cooked
organic food. Food that is processed, genetically-modified, and non-organic will harm you over time.
It is all about creating a daliy routine and sticking too it.
Your day always begins with the night before based on
what time you go to sleep. If you stay up until midnight
every night, you are not getting quality sleep that will
allow you to be more fresh and alert to tackle the chal-
lenges of the day that lies ahead. If you go to bed by
10pm every night and are up by 6am, you will find that
you will be more rested and have more energy and vitality. The longer you to this, the better you will feel. It’s
that simple.
There is a lot to ayurveda in terms of all of the different
aspects to it, but creating and maintaining long lasting
vitality and health the natural way actually isn’t very
complicated. In fact, much of it is based on common
sense.
It stems around eating rightly (organic and
fresh), have good habits in exercise and sleep, daily
meditation and other self-rejuvenating techniques, and
an overall internal view that you have excellent health.
Additionally, if you can at least once a year it is
recommended that you go through a process
called panchakarma (PK), which is a series of
ayurvedic treatments that focus on primarily
detoxification and rejuvenation. Of course, if
you have a specific health concern, PK can really help with that, but remember that ayurveda
works on the entire body/mind at the same time.
Ama Bad, Ojas Good
A quick word on stresses and toxins. Over time
stresses and toxins accumulate in our bodies
and if not addressed can cause problems.
According to ayurveda, disease is caused by a
build up of ama in the body. Ama is like plaque
on your teeth…you know the fuzzy white stuff

Whole Earth Landscaping Tips
By Jeff Barone
am always encouraging my client, and anyone
willing to listen, to build a relationship with
their landscape—to actually approach their
piece of land with an interest in getting to intimately understand its ‘personality’ or character.
As in any relationship, time spent gaining an understanding of the characteristics, quirks and tendencies of
the other takes a certain willingness and dedication to
the process of building that connection. The same holds
true with your landscape.
I would venture to say that the single most important
action one can take towards developing a fruitful and
foundational relationship would be to treat the other
with genuine awareness and interest in their character.
Same holds true with your landscape!
Becoming genuinely “aware” of your landscape
could also translate into gaining ‘Earth Consciousness’.
It’s a term that is used often in these times and it can easily begin there on your bit of land. So here are a few
ways towards gaining a sincere connection to the piece
of the planet you inhabit.
I
Watering! Probably the single most unconscious use of
water in any landscape is the use of ‘sweeping’ away
spring seed heads and pollen debris collected in drive32

ways and walkway with a heavy stream of water coming
from the garden hose. This is not a conscious use of
water. There’s a very simple solution—use a broom!
Enough said.
Spend time in you landscape—concentrate on what
areas in the land receive the most direct sunlight. Water
these places in the evening and/or in the early morning.
Do not over water. The soil’s moisture is best determined by digging 3” into the ground with your hand, if
the ground is loose enough, otherwise use a garden tool.
If the soil is moist at this depth then you do not need to
water. If it feels dry to the touch then water in this location—making sure you do not saturate the area at this 3”
depth. Water again only when the area feels dry to your
fingertips.
If considering irrigation for new garden beds—consider a drip irrigation system as opposed to sprinkle
heads. Drip irrigation is the moist efficient use of water
because these systems bring the water directly to the
plant’s root base. They do not spray the entire plant’s
foliage, delivering unusable water to the plant. If you
already have a spray head irrigation system, make sure
that, (1) it is automatically timed to irrigate in the early
morning or in the late evening and, (2) make sure the
that spray heads are NOT facing in directions where
www.earthstarmag.com
they are over spraying into driveways, roads and sidewalks. Misdirected spray heads are a consistent waste
of water!
Also, where you can, use rain barrels at down
spouts or at open-ended gutters. This form of collecting
water is steeped in history and very useful. Suppliers
sell barrels that have a spiggot system built into the bottom of the barrel so you can attach a short length garden hose to it. Pressure from the full barrel allows you
to water at short distances. These systems are useful for
watering plants at close proximity to the barrel as well
as for washing outdoor furniture, cars, etc.
The follow-up to the watering of garden spaces is
Mulching. The primary reason mulch is used in perennial beds and at the base of trees and shrubs is to hold
moisture in the soil. Mulch is a light and airy substrate
relative to loam. When the sun beats down on loam it
hardens and dries the soil. Mulch is the buffer zone
layer between this intense summer heat and the soil.
When using mulch, use true bark mulch recycled from
the de-barking process in lumber milling plants.
There are many types of mulch products on the
market, including ground rubber tires as well as
ground-up wood pallets, tree branches, old wooden
fences, etc. These recycled products are then colored
with water-based dyes. Pure mulch products end up
braking down into the soil, adding organic matter back
to the earth. It can be very useful to use a one part compost to two parts natural mulch mix in your garden beds.
This has the mutual benefit of holding in moisture as
well as adding further organic matter to your plant material.
One big reminder when mulching—keep the mulch
2”-3” away from the trunk-base of trees and shrubs and
1” away from the stalk-base of perennials. This allows
the plant to breathe, as well as removing the likelihood
of fungi and mold from developing at the base of the
plants.
So in closing, these are simple tips for
developing a mindful approach to interacting with your landscape. Like any developing relationship, awareness of the other
(person or place) can bring awareness to
one’s self. And remember, the land you
inhabit is a small piece of the earth we all
inhabit. Relate to it with kindness and
mindfulness.

“
G
o away King,” Pearl Carlson said sleepily as
her German shepherd dog pulled at her bedding and attempted to rouse her. “Not now, I’m
trying to get some rest.” Pearl vaguely wondered what
King was doing in her bedroom at three O’clock in the
morning, since he was usually locked in another part of
the house at night. It was Christmas night and the sixteen-year-old girl had been looking forward to a good
night’s sleep after an exciting day.
Pearl sat up in bed to give the barking dog a good
push and realized that smoke was filling her room—the
house was on fire. Bolting out of bed, she ran in panic to
her parents’ bedroom and awoke them both.
Her mother, Fern, got up at once and told Pearl to
escape through her own bedroom window while she
helped her husband, Howard, out of their window. But
Howard Carlson had a lung condition and could not
move quickly. Pearl headed back to her own bedroom
but somehow wound up in the living room where the fire
was at its worst.
“I’m going after her,” Howard said, but his wife,
knowing his lung ailment made this impossible, told him
to escape through the window while she went for Pearl,
Fern ran blindly toward the smoke-blackened room.
Pearl was standing there, frozen in confusion. Fern led
her to safety but then realized that neither Howard nor
King had gotten out of the house. Fern ran back into
their bedroom and found Howard collapsed on the floor
with King by his side. Fern and King struggled to lift
Howard and finally the two of them managed to get the
nearly unconscious man to safety. Fern later said she
could not have moved Howard without King’s help.
King and his family were saved. King had badly
burned paws and a gash on his back, but seemed other-
wise healthy. Yet the day after the fire, King would not
eat his dog food.
The neighbors had come by with sandwiches and
refreshments and were helping to rebuild what they
could of the house. Then King did something he had
never done before: He stole one of the soft sandwiches.
Something was wrong. The Carlsons looked in King’s
mouth and saw that his gums were pierced with painful,
sharp wooden splinters. That terrible night, King had,
with sheer desperate force, chewed and clawed his way
through the closed wood door that separated him from
his family. A door had been left open for King to the outdoors so he could easily have just save himself. Instead,
he chose not to flee but to gnaw and smash through the
door to face the blinding fire and choking smoke to rescue his friends. Now the family knew how King had gotten into the house.
The splinters were removed and King recovered fully,
although his pads had been so burned that even a year
later it was painful for him to walk on a hot sidewalk. I
asked Fern Carlson later, as she recounted the incredible tale of King’s bravery, if there were any changes in
the way King was treated after the fire. “Oh yes,” she
said. “The neighbors all fed King steak and roasts until
he got really fat!”
“Where is man without the beasts? If all
the beasts were gone man would die from
a great loneliness of spirit. “

A
sparrow crashed into a chimpanzee cage at the
Basel Zoo. One of the chimps scooped the bird
up in its hand.
A zookeeper who was watching this expected to see the
animal devour the bird. But instead of eating it, the
chimp just held the bird tenderly and contemplated it.
Other chimpanzees became curious and came over to see
the bird. It was delicately passed from chimp to chimp.
Each chimpanzee examined the little creature, holding it
gently in its great ape hands, taking obvious care not to
hurt it. Finally, realizing that the bird could be better
cared for by humans, one chimpanzee brought the bird
to the front of the cage and carefully handed it to the
startled zookeeper.

want to do whatever we can to
minimize or eliminate the ama in
our body, because you can imagine
the build up of ama causes major
problems.
Here’s a concrete
example…the clogging of arteries
that leads to heart disease: this is a
major build up of ama in your
veins that blocks the proper flood
flow to your heart. This ama
builds up from years of eating
things that are not good for you as

Ojas, on the other hand, is the
opposite of ama. It’s the good

is what we strive for in creating

we really want to do to get that tip

DEMAGOGUES,
OBAMAGOGUES
By John Hogue
have made presidential predictions since 1968.
So far, I have been 10 and 0, successfully predicting who would be the next president. I
“non”-do this feat by using, or better, being
“used” by, an inner quietude, a byproduct of
being a practitioner of Self-Observation of the BodyMind that I’ll simply call my “oracle.”
Life in presidential augury was simple until the elections of 2000 made it unclear to me just what my oracle
was predicting.
In 2000, it started going all Gandalf on me, speaking in riddles – well, it doesn’t really speak, it impresses wordlessly with silence. Anyway, if Gandalf were a
Buddha he would be delivering the “unsaid” in riddles
that I must find voice and word to convey.
Back in 2000, I predicted that Vice President Al
Gore would win by a half million votes. Then I added
that this would be the first time I’m going to be absolutely right and absolutely wrong. That’s how I read the
prophecy in my mind. I had no answer for the riddle
until after the election.
How can you “win” the presidency by a half-million
votes and be wrong?
Simple, the vote of regular American citizens in
plain majority has no influence on the outcome. Only
the votes cast by those of the Electoral Collage count. If
one million people in my state (Washington) or any
other state in the Union should vote for candidate “A”
and one million and one vote for candidate “B,” the
handful of electors chosen to actually pick the next pres-
I
ident all go to “B” and a million votes in one’s state for
candidate “A” are nullified.
Look at what happened in 2000.
Gore DID win by a half-million votes and I WAS
wrong. We can argue the whys and wherefores of the
disputed and bungled Florida ballots all we like.
Nevertheless, the Electoral College system gave the
presidency to the man who DID NOT win the popular
vote.
In any other democracy, a simple majority vote
would be the only litmus test for victory. Ours, however,
being the first and therefore one of the oldest of the
modern democracies, is still under the spell of outmoded electoral ideas from the late 18th century. We are a
democracy by board of electors, not by the people.
America is not a representative democracy. Other,
younger democracies are much more fair and progressive then ours because they see our mistakes. We are as
blind as an old fuddy-duddy democracy can be about it.
Set in our ways. It seems you can’t teach an old democracy new tricks. However, the Myth Buster’s on
Discovery Channel proved that you could teach an old
dog new tricks so maybe there’s hope for good old-fashioned US democracy.
What I have learned from Gore’s lost “victory” is to
state, from now on, that I make accurate predictions
about who will win the popular vote, not who will win
an election.
John McCain may win the presidential election.
Oops! There I go again. I mean to say, how he could

he first rays of the morning sun filtered
gently through the breaking clouds,
unveiling the unspoiled beauty of a
remote coral island, set like a jewel in the
middle of a deep blue sea.
A tropical storm had just hit the area, and a huge
swell was pounding the reef. The once-placid ocean had
turned into a raging torrent of surf and spray.
Suddenly, when a huge wave was about to break, a
young dolphin appeared from the deep, and crossing the
wave as it hit the reef, he projected a thin trail across the
wall of water, fighting hard to maintain an edge between
bottom and crest, holding his breath. . . .
The lip of the wave slowly wrapped him, deeper and
deeper, taking him to a place surfers dream of: the barrel.
And then, as he finished cutting the face of the wave,
the lone dolphin managed a beautiful cutback and exited the wave with a magnificent pull-out.
He decided that this would be the last wave he’d surf
this morning, so he swam into the island’s lagoon,
exhausted but happy.
Daniel Alexander Dolphin and the surf were inseparable. From watching the sun rise every morning and set
every afternoon, to all those surfing sessions in which he
would forget the meaning of time, Daniel knew that
there was nothing more important in his life than the
moments he spent riding waves.
Indeed, more than anything else, Daniel Dolphin
loved to surf. It was in his blood and in his soul, and it
made him feel free. Surfing helped him achieve a unique
communication with the sea, making him realize that the
ocean was not only a mass of moving water, but something alive, full of wisdom and beauty.
Daniel Dolphin was a dreamer. He was convinced
that there was more to life than fishing and sleeping, so
he had decided to devote all his energies to discovering
the true purpose of his life through his surfing and the
wisdom of the sea. That was his dream.
T
www.earthstarmag.com
From the beginning, this way of thinking brought
him problems with the pod. Many of his friends couldn’t understand what he was trying to achieve.
Every morning while getting ready to fish, the pod
would watch Daniel head toward the reef, ready for
another surfing session. How could he waste so much
time doing something that wouldn’t help him find the
food he needed? It was pure madness.
One evening when Daniel was returning from the
surf, Michael Benjamin Dolphin, Daniel’s best friend,
came to him and asked, “What do you think you’re
doing, Daniel? Why are you risking your life in the reef?
What are you trying to prove?”
“I’m not trying to prove anything,” Daniel replied.
“I just want to know what I can learn from the sea and
my surfing. That’s all.”
“For heaven’s sake, Daniel, a lot of dolphins who
care about you think that sooner or later you’ll get killed.
Riding waves was fun when we were calves, but now
you’re pushing yourself to the limit. Why don’t you
spend your time catching more fish instead of wasting it
surfing the reef?”
Daniel Dolphin stared at his old friend, and after
being quiet for a while, he said, “Michael, look around
you. Our world is full of dolphins who fish from dawn
to dusk, one day after another. They’re always fishing.
They don’t have the time to pursue their dreams anymore. Instead of fishing to live, they now live to fish.”
Daniel’s voice turned to the past. “I remember a
young and strong Michael Dolphin who could stare at
the waves for hours, imagining himself on top of one of
those giant walls of water, dreaming. Now I only see a
scared dolphin, always fishing, afraid of living his own
dreams. What can be more important in life than to follow your dreams, whatever they are?”
Daniel stared at his friend and said, “Remember that
you only live once, Michael. Don’t let your fears stand
in the way of your dreams.”
Michael was confused, knowing that what he’d

The Movie Mystic
E
very once in a while, a film
comes along with such an
intriguing premise that we sit
bolt upright in our chairs when we
first see a preview for it or read about
it. In Hollywood parlance, a “homerun” premise is worth its weight in
celluloid. Of course, we are sometimes elated and sometimes disappointed when we see the actual film.
As Forrest Gump so eloquently said,
“Life is like a box of chocolates. You
never know what you’re going to get.”
Opening this coming December,
a film called The Curious Case Of
Benjamin Button is about a man who
is born old and then gets younger
and younger as time goes by, thereby reversing the entire “aging”
process. I have no idea about the
quality of the film itself but I sure
am hooked on the premise and can’t
wait to see it.
I also remember having that
feeling when I first heard about
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless
Mind (one of my favorite films of the
last decade) and its question of
“what would it be like if we could
erase a painful memory?”
After Life, the film I am recommending this month, takes the
Sunshine premise and ups the ante:
When we die, we go to a way station
where we choose one memory in
which we will spend eternity. ONE
memory and only one.
After Life is a Japanese film that
was shot about ten years ago. The
film made a quick appearance (with
very little publicity) on the U.S art
house circuit and then quickly disappeared. To reveal too much about the
44
EARTH STAR
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2008
plot and the various choices that
people make about their one special
memory would ruin the surprises of
the film; moreover, it’s the premise
itself that begs further discussion.
Unlike Bill Murray’s plight in
Groundhog Day where he remembered what each previous day had
been like, the memory in After Life
would be a new experience every
time. The elation, love, joy or whatever the emotions might be, would be
as though we had never encountered
them before. A peak moment in our
life relived throughout eternity.
A memory involves a certain
group of people (or maybe just one
person or a favorite pet or a favorite
nature encounter) at a particular time
and place. Choosing one memory
might, and almost certainly probably
would, exclude some other cherished
loved ones. For many, there would be
great excitement and comfort in picking that one moment, while for others
it could be an excruciatingly difficult
decision. (Both experiences are
reflected in the film itself.)
For example, I know that my
one memory would be the New
Year’s Eve on which I married my
wife Lauren. We got married in our
home and the whole day was utterly
By Stephen Simon
magical and perfect. Our six children (from previous marriages) were
all present and they were all ecstatically happy. My kids were thrilled
that I was marrying Lauren, her kids
felt the same about me, and all six of
them loved each completely. Our
one granddaughter was there at her
adorable best. The ceremony was
exactly as we hoped it would be, the
food was wonderful, we all danced
and sang and cried and ate, and the
world was a magical place. That
would absolutely be the memory I
would choose.
It was, however, a very small
wedding. Just our immediate families. The eternal experience of it
would then not include any of our
close friends or other family members who couldn’t make it. My sister, whom I adore, couldn’t be in
Oregon that night so my eternal
memory would not include her and,
as I said, I really love her.
That’s what makes the film so
fascinating. We sit there and watch
the choices that people make on
screen and, all the while, we’re processing our own decision. Do I
believe that such a choice awaits us
after life? No, I don’t, but the film
led to amazing reflections and discussions for many, many weeks after
I saw it. That is, to me, one the hallmarks of a very special and deeply
spiritual film experience.
So….which memory would

The Movie Mystic
Mamma Mia!, what a movie!.
Exhilarating, dazzling, breathtakingly
beautiful for your eyes, rockingly wonderful for your ears, and energetically
enchanting for your heart, Mamma
Mia! is pure, unadulterated fun.
Based on the smash Broadway hit,
Mamma Mia! revives the old-fashioned
movie musical with such a flourish that
I kept thinking-where have you BEEN,
musicals? Welcome back!
The story of the film is simplicity at its best. A young woman (a
charming young actress named
Amanda Seyfried) is getting married
on the idyllic Greek isle where her
mother runs a dilapidated Inn. Not
knowing who her father is, she sends
wedding invitations to the three men
with whom her mother had “liaisons”
during the summer of her conception.
The guys show up. A wedding
occurs. End of storyline. To tell the
truth, the story doesn’t always make
perfect sense, either in its timeline or
in its playing out. Mamma Mia is,
however, not terribly concerned with
its logic or reason (both of which are
often overrated) and either was I.
Why not? Have I mentioned yet how
much fun the film is?
The music was written by the
legendary, reviled, revered, ABBA. If
you were alive during the 1970s, you
either loved or ridiculed ABBA. Even
if you were born later and have never
heard of them, you’ll be dancing in
the aisles anyway. I dare you not to
rock out to “Dancing Queen”.
Double dare you.
At the epicenter of all the fun is
the inestimable and I DO mean inestimable, Meryl Streep. Meryl plays
Donna, the mother in question. No,
she doesn’t play the mother. She IS
the mother. A wacky, 1970s refugee
www.earthstarmag.com
who used to front an all-female
trio called Donna and the
Dominoes. Meryl sings all her
own songs and, as with everything else she tackles, her voice
is fantastic, making her completely believable as a singer.
Ms. Streep is the engine that
propels the entire film and there
really are no words that can
accurately describe how brilliant, daring, and utterly fearless she
is in the role. To go from a cold, calculating diva in The Devil Wears
Prada to a singing, utterly uninhibited, former hippie would seem an
almost impossible transition for anyone other than Meryl Streep. For over
thirty years now, she has created one
indelible performance after another
and I think it’s time to just tell like it
is. There may have been other
actresses in other eras who were her
equal (Katharine Hepburn perhaps?)
but there has been no greater actress
in the history of film than Meryl
Streep….and I don’t remember seeing even the great Ms. Hepburn sing
and dance.
Of the three potential fathers,
Pierce Brosnan. who made his fame
and fortune as the suave and debonair
James Bond, deserves special mention. In Mamma Mia! he plays a forlorn ex-lover who couldn’t even spell
the word “cool.” And he sings his
own songs, too. Badly. Very badly.
And do we ever love him for it. For
all of us who can’t carry a tune,
Brosnan is the Greek god of dissonance. Singing with gusto, feeling,
and enthusiasm, his fearlessness as
an actor almost matches Streep’s and
that puts him in very rare company
indeed.
In fact, fearless performances
rule the day in the film. Also along
for the hilarity are the other potential
fathers (Colin Firth and Stellan
Skarsgard) and Christine Baranski
By Stephen Simon
and Julie Walters, who throw themselves into their roles as Donna’s former backup singers with reckless and
openhearted abandon.
And, lastly here, let’s also raise a
mighty toast to being middle-aged, or
maybe even “two-thirds” aged or
more. Except for the young lovers in
the film, and Mr. Firth at a mere
forty-eight, all the other actors are in
their fifties and Ms. Streep is actually
going to be sixty next year. Take that,
young ‘uns! Watching Meryl and her
cohorts race around a Greek Island
(be prepared to put Greece on the top
of your want -to-travel-to list) is an
inspiration to us all. And a joyous
reminder that much of the so-called
“aging process” is rooted only in our
attitudes. When we embrace love,
fun, and spontaneity, age is truly
irrelevant and then, Mamma Mia!,
what a party life can be.

and What Dreams May Come, and both
directed and produced Indigo and the film
version of Conversations With God.

heard was true, but the idea of a life made of dreams was
far away from him. He wasn’t a calf anymore, and his
dreams had been replaced by duties. Wasn’t that why he
fished? Besides, what would the other dolphins think if
they saw him riding waves?
He remembered his days as a surfer as something
that belonged to his youth, to the past. He had thought
about surfing again, but he was so tired after fishing all
day that he could always think of some good reason not
to do it.
Michael looked at his friend Daniel, and trying to be
convincing, said to him, “Someday, Daniel, you’ll grow
up and see things the way the rest of the pod sees them.
There is no other way.” And then Michael was gone.
Daniel’s sadness was evident, and although Michael
had changed a lot since the times they’d spent together
surfing, discovering some new secret spot, he still loved
him as he had years before. He knew that the joy they
had shared was still in his heart, but for some reason,
Michael had stopped dreaming.
Daniel’s heart was aching, but he felt that there was
nothing more he could do to help his friend. He knew he
would be misunderstood for telling others what he felt
inside, for trying to show them the freedom he experienced while surfing.
But Daniel Dolphin also knew that he would be
hooked forever on the magic he’d discovered, riding
waves alone in the vastness of his beloved sea.
He had chosen to live his life based on his own principles, and although he was sometimes lonely, he had no
regrets.
“If I could only find a way to show them the freedom I feel when surfing,” he said to himself, “maybe
they would realize how important it is to follow your
dreams. Then again, I don’t have any right to interfere
with their lives. Who am I to tell them what’s wrong
and what’s right? That’s it. From now on, I’ll just try
to be the best I can be. There are still lots of things I
have to discover about my surfing, so I won’t bother
anyone anymore.”
Daniel felt good about his decision. He would follow his dreams as he had always done, for better or
worse.
He was heading back to the lagoon when, suddenly,
he heard a voice.
He could barely understand what was being said, but
words were being whispered to him. Who could it be?
In his confusion, Daniel lost his balance and almost
got washed in to shore. Who was calling him? The voice
sounded familiar, like someone he’d always known. He
looked around, but he was definitely alone.
He became afraid. Had the loneliness, the price paid
for living his dreams, finally taken its toll? Was he mad?
And then he heard the voice once more. But this
time, it was clear:
There comes a time in life
when there is nothing else to do
but to go your own way.
A time to follow your dreams.
A time to raise the sails of
your own beliefs.
Daniel learned fast in the days and weeks that followed.
He spent whole days surfing the reef, sometimes even
forgetting to take time out to feed himself; and although
he was happy with the life he had chosen, he wished he
could share with the pod what he felt inside.

TIPS
PINHOLE GLASSES
used to need my pinhole glasses to read the
newspaper, but now they don’t seem to work
anymore. I can actually read much better without them”. This was not the only vision
improvement technique this student had been
using over the past nine months, but it was part of the
strategy.
I
Pinhole glasses are black plastic “lenses” with lots of
little holes in them. When you put them on it’s like
looking through a big screen. If your vision is clearer
when you wear regular glasses, you will notice that the
little holes help
you to see more
clearly too. If
you have good
vision or vision
that cannot be
improved with
glasses, you will
see worse.
These
funny
looking spectacles work by
eliminating the
need to focus the
light as it enters
the
eyes.
Imagine for a moment, light travelling in a horizontal
column, like an unsharpened pencil. When it reaches
the normal eye the light is refracted or focused - it is
brought to a point, (like when we sharpen a pencil), so
that it lands on the retina. The plastic of these “glasses” blocks all but the very central rays of light, which
go through the holes and there is no need for the eye to
do any focusing. (Similarly, the very center of the lead
of a pencil does not need to be sharpened.) This allows
the eye to relax and just receive the image.
You can try it for yourself. Punch a hole in a piece of
paper with the lead of a sharp pencil and look through
it without your glasses. Or, roll up your index finger to
48
EARTH STAR

make a little hole and look through that. Does this trick
help you to see what you can’t see without lenses?
Squinting the eyes does the same trick, but really tires
the eyelids, brows and cheek muscles.
Pinhole glasses cannot replace regular glasses and contacts for most activities. They severely restrict our
peripheral vision so we must not drive or ride a bicycle
while wearing them. However, they can be very therapeutic when worn for reading, TV or the computer
because they allow the eyes to relax and to see.
Because so much light is blocked by the plastic, we
need to make sure
there is good illumination while
wearing
them.
When we take
them off, we usually see more
clearly,
unlike
when we remove
regular glasses,
because our eyes
have rested.
These glasses can
take some getting
used to. We are
asking the mind
to perceive in a different way. As we adjust, we see
the “mesh” less and less. At first, it is best to wear
them for only a few minutes at a time. You can build
up to using them for a few hours as long as you are
comfortable.
You can get them by going to: http://www.visioneducators.com/books_and_resources.phtml . (They are
listed after the books.)

HEALING & BODYWORK
Rolfing
Rolfing© is a deep bodywork method
developed by Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D., in the
1940's, which frees, releases and
reshapes the body to bring it towards
greater balance and verticality.
Through Rolfing©, body structure is
restored and improved, stress is
reduced, and movement becomes more
fluid, efficient, and graceful. Freedom
and range of movement are enhanced,
and breathing becomes fuller and easier.
As out of balance parts of the body
are brought into alignment, chronic
aches and pains often disappear. Gravity
becomes an ally, rather than an enemy; it
is no longer an effort to hold oneself up.
In addition to the physical results, Dennis Bailey, Marshfield (South Shore):

Holistic Vision Improvement

How we see can be affected by
our frame of mind, state of
health, and environment. In
response to Life we may begin to overfocus at one distance and lose clarity at
another, or exhaust our eyes so they can't
focus comfortably anywhere, or even let
one eye drift in and out. These adaptations
may become chronic. We use muscles to
focus our eyes. You can learn techniques
to relax and coordinate them so that you
can see comfortably and clearly again.
Your dependence on glasses or contacts can be prevented, eliminated, or
reduced. Rosemary draws on her twenty years experience and training in
orthoptics, the Bates' Method, Gestalt
Psychotherapy, and EducationalKinesthetics to form a comprehensive
approach to vision improvement. She
offers individual and group sessions for
adults and children.

He has been called The Miraclemaker

Rolfing® produces lasting improvements in
posture, breathing, movement, and overall
relaxation. The Rolfer uses manual pressure
to help you feel into and let go of rigidities in
the connective tissue that wraps every muscle and bone. As you let go the tissue
changes state, becoming more elastic and
conductive of energy. This enhances freedom of movement, sensation, and circulation. Rolfing is done in specific patterns
throughout the body to allow a more erect
posture, easier breathing, improved balance, and more graceful movement. These
changes lead to a more positive self-image
and increased confidence. Once elasticity

Gum surgery is history, say goodbye to
the drill, the pain, the noise and the needle.
Miracle Bite Tabs™ (MBT) &
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT),
are used to treat Dental Distress Syndrome
(DDS) as written about by Dr. Hans Selye
MD, Dr. Fonder, a dentist, & others.
Your teeth and jaws are an extension
of your brain and spinal cord. Any imbalances caused by improper alignment of
the jaw (commonly referred to as dental
proprioception) can play a major role in
all disease and pain. Faulty dental proprioception can cause improper neurological feedback to the brain affecting
most, if not all body functions. Temporary
relief is easy and inexpensive, and can
enhance your present treatment whether
it is Chiropractic, Acupuncture,
Massage, Physical or Neural Therapy,
Pain Management, and TMD/TMJ.
There are over 230 positive studies from
81 universities in 37 countries involving
24 different dental procedures with an
astounding 94% success rate. This
included procedures as sensitive teeth,
pain control, speed of healing, periodontal disease, and others.
Carisolv™ a 5 yr. old gel from Sweden,

Add this to Micro-dentistry and Air

Dr. Yolin has offered an alternative to
traditional periodontal surgery for more
then 15 years and now adds a Soft
Tissue Laser for enhancing the sterilizing of the diseased gum pockets. He
is a certified member of the Academy of
Laser Dentistry (exam based). Phase
contrast microscopy, bacterial cultures
and anti-microbial natural oils are used
in the never ending commitment to
avoiding unnecessary gum surgery.
Mercury (Hg) in your saliva from
chewing? Take the chewing test and
have your saliva analyzed for Hg at a
very reasonable cost. You may not need
them removed. Defective amalgams are
removed following IAOMT protocol.
Dr. Yolin has been trained in the
specialty of Prosthetic Dentistry but does
not limit his practice. He utilizes hypnotherapy for dental phobic, cosmetic
dentistry, oral devices for snoring and
sleep apnea, 28 years experience in
treating head/neck facial pain syndrome,
metal free crowns wherever possible,
and extensive training in dental implantology.
His treatment philosophy is

fixes teeth, he treats human beings. And
that will never change.

PSYCHIC READINGS AND INTUITIVE LIFE COACHING
New Zealand Native, Shannar, has traveled
extensively throughout the world sharing her gifts
of the Sacred Language of Light. From a very
early age Shannar was aware that the other
realms were contacting and working with her,
this began her own spiritual journey into the other
worlds through Clairvoyance/Clairaudience and

The Sacred Language of Light is a very special
tool for resolving our patterns by connecting with the
cellular memory and healing the agreements that we
made in this and past lives. The Sacred Language of
Light comes through in the special pieces of symbolic art form known as the pictographs. Each pictograph is a Star Gate Map into our cellular encodings and contains Sacred Geometry, Symbols,
Musical Harmonics, Ancient and Star Languages.
Shannar is able to speak the Sacred Language,
hears the stories in poetry form and performs the

win the popular vote, that is.
Imagine if you will the return of Florida-like disputed ballots in 2008. It could very well be that Obama will
win the presidency like he won the primaries against
Hillary Clinton by winning the delegates but losing the
popular vote to Clinton by 174,000 votes cast across all
fifty states and territories.
Oh, I hear the Mass of you Obama folks saying, “Oh
contraire!”
Yes, yes, I know Obama wasn’t on the Michigan
ballot. I know.
Votes “intended” are not what my oracle seems to
read. It reads votes “cast.”
I publicly declared that Clinton would win the primaries and if my oracle is only a popular vote getter, it
was correct.
Anyway, most of you know the story of how Obama
Michigan votes were cast because it had broken the
Democratic Party rules by pushing its primary out of the
herd of state primaries held on Super Tuesday. Obama
took himself off the ballot. Clinton kept herself on the
ballot, even though the black sheeple election didn’t
count. Her decision was at the very least a Nixonian calculation to stay on, just in case she could wheel (or,
behind closed doors “weal” resistors) and deal a reinstatement of the Michigan delegation, a thing she later
tried. (Very tricky-dicky of her).
I’ve predicted for years now that if she became president she’d be the “Nixonian” Democrat—a karmic echo
60

to the past. More on
that in a moment.
The Michigan
Mishenanigans
caught
Senator
Obama exposed in
his political immaturity. He learned
his lesson soon
enough to keep his
name on the ballot
for the second disputed state primary
held in Florida.
Now he could
“tricky-his-dicky”
the Clintons, if
need
aroused.
Fortunately for his
campaign, he won
the delegate counts
if not the popular
vote.
I’m well aware
that many people would have voted for Obama if he had
been on the Michigan ballot. It was not fair. It was
another example of how screwed up our democracy is;
however, that’s not at issue here.
It is what my oracle reads for forty years in counting. I’m beginning to trip over my brass tripod over this.
Starting last year, I began seeing “two” presidents
running for office in 2008. Up to that time, starting in
1998, my oracle had only seen Hillary Clinton become
the next president after Bush. Then came the mysterious
riddle lost in the augured translation.
I’m “Gored” again and I’m “Bushed” about it.
How can two presidents run in the same campaign?
My oracle needs prophetic “riddle”-in to calm it
down but there is none to have.
In my digital book “Predictions for 2008” in a chapter entitled The Mother of All Presidencies or an Obama
Nation? I wrote the following passage about a riddled
future election timeline ending with an Obama presidency. What you are reading was documented before the
New Hampshire Primaries in early January 2008 so it
bears some interesting prophetic hits, misses and trends
to consider:
My oracle sees two future presidents running in 2008.
This vision has never happened before. One of these
people got the prescient nod almost ten years ago [when]
I declared… that New York would have a new Senator
www.earthstarmag.com
Clinton
in
November 1998 as
well as a President
Hillary Clinton in
2008.
The
second
time my oracle lowered its invisible
hand upon the
shoulder of a future
president was upon
a charismatic black
senator
from
Illinois I saw affectionately greeting a
crowd in Kenya, the
birthplace of his
father, in August
2006.
I had a vision of
the Black Kennedy!
He is a reverberation of collective karma from
America’s past going back to the future in 2008. He is
the end result of what started under the administration of
the White John F. Kennedy. I saw the fruits of the civil
rights movement—I saw Barack Obama, a future president of the United States.
Now I am in a unique dilemma of augury. Can both
the first woman and the first black man—indeed the first
multi-racial American (Obama’s mother is Caucasian)—
both become presidents in 2008? Not only a woman and
a black man running for president, but the first term
Senator from Illinois belongs
to the next significant future
social-ethnic group, the
mixed-racial, emerging in
America’s melting pot. He is
a member of what prophecy
calls the next majority world
demographic in the Age of
Aquarius, the Race of Tan.
The oracular presence that
delivers this dual-presidential
message into my bloodshot
Third Eye has never seen
wrongly since 1968. What
am I to do on this fortieth
anniversary of my presidential prediction run with this
fourth-dimensional paradox?
www.earthstarmag.com
I guess I’ll have to come back to earth, to threedimensional perspective and risk documenting an explanation, rife with my own egoistic projections and biases.
One of these people will be president in 2008. The
other will be a president later, but who and when?
With that asked, if Obama should win the
Democratic nomination and be elected president of the
United States in 2008, his unripened entry into the White
House will be too soon, and soon tragic. If you thought
the Bush years were a disaster…you do not want to initiate this Obama Nation
timeline with your vote.
His time is not now.
He will be a great president, later.
I then spoke of a scenario of
the dream team, months
before it was a mainstream
issue, that an Obama-Clinton
ticket would be unstoppable
with at least a 15 percent
popular vote victory in
November 2008. To which I
added this dire warning that
as of yet I feel uninclined to
modify, even though I sincerely hope it doesn’t turn
out this way:
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2008 EARTH STAR
61
What I said in my HogueProphecy Bulletin, The Obama
Nation, posted in early 2007 still stands. Obama has
“president” in his destiny, but not in 2008. If he takes the
offer [or becomes Clinton’s VP on her ticket], he will
become president of the United States in four to eight
years. Hillary Clinton would be presciently wise to give
her Vice President chances to season and mature.
Perhaps my oracle sees “two” presidents in 2008
because they are on the same winning ticket. I don’t like
to think about the other reason.
My darkest concern is that one of these future presidents will come to office at the wrong time. The Black
Kennedy who may be president in 2008 reminds me of
the inexperienced White
Kennedy (JFK) who in 1956,
tried and failed in a bid to
become Adlai Stevenson’s
Vice Presidential nominee at
the Democratic Convention. A
much more confident and
experienced JFK successfully
ran four years later in 1960
and launched his New
Frontier.
I fear that destiny could
have Senator Obama peak too
soon. Even JFK’s first term
suffered a number of crises
related to his youth and lack
of political seasoning. He had
natural leadership qualities
though. Leadership qualities
tested by command of a PT
boat in the Pacific Theater of
the Second World War.
Kennedy distinguished himself heroically as a natural
born leader.
What seasoning does the new Black Kennedy bring
to the oval office in 2008? Personally, I like this man.
Prophetically speaking, I fear for his future. National
disasters and death in office will mark his presidency if
he is elected in 2008. Yet, greatness awaits his presidency in 2012 or 2016.
I would add a few brush strokes to this politically
Boschian vision. Or perhaps these are more my hopes
than a prophetic addendum. If Obama can survive the
very steep and dangerous learning curve of his first three
years in office “then” perhaps the greatness potentially
in him will come forth, once the hubris and passiveaggressive narcissism has been sorely though compas-
62
EARTH STAR
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2008
sionately slammed by the burdensome reality of being
president of a nation in peril. He will have to pull deep
into his soul-sources for this strength. His manhood tempering, PT 109 event, will be at the nation’s expense and
hopefully, to the nation’s profit.
Obama likes to play with his name in jokes, but the
one name his hubris avoids is a play on demagogue
(Obamagogue). He may have the power of oratory to
seduce just enough people to win the presidency if they
can believe in the “Idea” as Obama the man, but once in
office he will have to painfully be born again as Obama,
a man of “Ideas.”
Though confident that Clinton would reach her destiny in 2008, I did sense one
danger and wrote about it over a
year and six months ago, in a
HogueProphecy Bulletin entitled
“Hillary
Clinton’s
Albatross.” In brief, I said her
vote to side with a majority of
senators to give President Bush
war powers in October 2002
was like a political albatross
around her neck that Obama
would tug on, hard, in the coming primaries.
Indeed he did pull hard, using it
as evidence that she had experience but not the insight and wisdom to make the right decision,
whereas, he was an early critique against the war powers
vote, thus, he was a fresh leader
with the raw intelligence, if not
the decades of experience, to
get it right.
In a tight race where only a few
hundred thousand votes in the
right spots wins or loses one the delegates needed to be
nominated, Clinton lost the anti-war block of liberal
democrats across the country to Obama and that, I
believe, lost her her destiny to be president in 2008.
That doesn’t mean she’ll not try another run in 2012.
As my oracle foresaw for years, a destined H. Clinton
presidency would karmically echo a Nixon presidency.
Tragedy ended the “White” Kennedy, his void filled
later by Nixon. Tragedy may end the “Black” Kennedy
who’s void could be filled by the Nixonian Democrat,
Hillary Clinton, in 2012.
Barack Obama by not choosing Clinton as his running mate listened to ego and inexperience over political
strategic thinking – the kind of Machiavellian thinking
www.earthstarmag.com
that even our greatest and noblest presidents, like
Obama’s favorite, Abraham Lincoln, possessed.
Obama should have taken Hillary Clinton as his
Vice President on the ticket. He would have won by 15
percent of the popular vote without electoral disputes.
Now he will run the danger of even losing to John
McCain, and making Sarah Palin fill the void left in destiny for a woman being president of the United States in
2008, for if McCain is elected she will be president –
thus a new variation on the riddle has arisen. Two presidents running in the same election won by the GOP.
Obama’s egoistic tendency is that of a bargaining
seducer. He must “win” people over himself and not
with the help of another’s charisma. To admit consciously to himself that he needed Hillary’s power to
seduce her middle, slightly center-right followers was
too hard for seducer-hubris to bear. He listened to his
darker tendency and would rather risk losing the election trying to seduce, to win over the center-right voters
himself.
His most important decision before becoming president—his VP choice—has set a course for a historically close election in 2008 to rival that waged in 1960 by
his karmic echo—J. F. K. against Richard Nixon. The
popular vote will be tighter than 1960 and it’s possible
John McCain will win the popular vote but lose the electoral vote to Obama or vice versa. Whoever wins, will be
afflicted by political illegitimacy.
Even as I say this, I see the next presidency through
a mirror darkly obscured and unclear. As if there is no
president. A ship of state without a captain. Or, is it a
captain guiding a ship who cannot command?
I see chaos and even though my oracle nudges
towards an Obama victory, at the moment of this writing
(26 September 2008), it is not clear to me why alarm and
disorder swirls in the magic mirror of tomorrow. I can’t
shake the possibility that somehow, neither man running
for president will be sworn into office.
My oracle has never been so occulted in the forty
years I’ve been making predictions.
Perhaps it is because we are living in the days of
Nostradamus’ Third Antichrist?
I have a new digital book posted at my home page at
www.hogueprophecy.com that examines the 16th
Century French seer’s unique take on prophecies of the
Antichrist. There are not one but THREE. Their names
are written in code. The first was Napaulon Roy
(Napoleon King); the second Hister (Hitler) and the
third he code-named Mabus.
Not only do recently dead dictators such as Saddam
Hussein decode their names easily into the anagram
www.earthstarmag.com
code “Mabus” as well as terrorist leaders such as Usama
bin Laden, but also two men who currently are and may
be our next president also easily fit the code. For
instance, using the laws of anagram Nostradamus followed see how easy it is to decode “G.W. Bush” into
Mabus:
First put the letters in lower case:
g.w. bush
Turn the letters g w over:
a.m. bush
Reverse a.m. to m.a.:
m.a. bush
Drop the periods:
mabush
Drop the one irrelevant letter h:
mabus
I [think] that should assuage prophetic biases of the left
against their Republican boogeyman president of nearly
eight years. Pause and reflect how it is even easier to
make Obama the “Mabus” by code. There’s just one
small hurdle. The o in Obama can become a u, especially when you consider the Kenyan phonetic pronunciation of “Obama” curls the o with a more u sounding
vowel, like “oobama”—thus:
oobama = ubama
Arrange the letters:
ubama = maabu
Cut the redundant a:
mabu
Replace it with the missing s:
mabu(s) = Mabus
Are we electing an Antichrist in November? I hardly
believe it. As the book Nostradamus and the Antichrist,
Code Named MABUS will reveal, many a man was to
good a prophetic fit to fulfill Nostradamus’ prophecy.
Indeed there is another definition for the Antichrist that
will take this “sleuth”-saying mystery away from personalities as candidates to help the reader confront an
essential “Antichrist” that is so immediate and intimate
that it is also most easy to overthrow in our daily lives.
As easy as taking off a mask to let our original spirit
shine and light the world.

“You miss who we are,

these animals would communicate to man if they could.
I
n Kinship with All Life, J. Allen Boone, the greatgrandson of Daniel Boone, describes how his theories about compassion and communication with
animals were put to the test.
On a camping trip, he returned to his cabin to find
ants everywhere devouring his food. He went to get ant
poison and a broom when he realized that, rather than
simply killing the ants, he should at least try the animal
communication techniques he had been recently studying.
Boone had learned to communicate with dogs and
horses and even snakes. So why not at least try it on
ants?
Studying the ants to determine what he could like and
respect about them (the beginning of the psychic bond
which leads to communication), Boone settled on diligence and cooperation as the likeliest traits. After praising them mentally, he told them that he could kill them
but instead was humbly requesting that they leave his
food alone because he sorely needed it. He left for
awhile and upon his return, all the ants had graciously
departed.
I had occasion to try Boone’s technique myself once
when I found cockroaches in my home. I confess I tried
boric acid and roach motels first, with limited success,
before 1 remembered reading of Boone’s unorthodox
methods.
I sat down to accomplish the first step of finding
something admirable about the cockroaches. After about
fifteen minutes of uneasily watching them, I confessed
to them that 1 could see nothing I liked but that if they
would leave, that would be very admirable and I promised to say good things about cockroaches whenever
asked.
I even wrote them a letter, the next step recommended by Boone, and tucked it into the garbage, which
seemed a likely mailbox—and where it would be away

completely crazy. The next day, to my astonishment (I
hadn’t much faith in Boone’s theories either) the cockroaches were gone and never returned, although 1 lived

leukemia, it continued bouncing around as happily as
ever, a constant reminder of simple delight in being
alive. The woman realized that while she had been
studying mind-over-matter methods of healing for herself, trying to accept the idea that the body could heal
any disease, she didn’t quite believe it. But her cat did.
The woman resolved to reinvigorate her program of
alternative healing along with the traditional methods.
And she incorporated her feline co-patient into the regimen. If the woman got a massage, the cat got a massage.
If the woman had healing crystals in her bedroom, the
cat had crystals in its water bowl. The kitten had made
her realize she had to love now, whatever the future
might hold, and have faith. Seven years later both are
still loving life and the cat’s last three leukemia checkups proved negative.
When pets were introduced to one ward at the Ohio State
Hospital for the Criminally Insane, levels of violence

dropped drastically. Prisoners made fewer suicide
attempts and their medication requirements decreased.
The prisoners’ interaction and communication with their
doctors was significantly improved. However, acts of
violence in other wards increased—because prisoners in
those wards wanted pets as well. Finally, the prisoners
with pets shared the offspring of their animals with the
other wards.

hey say that what goes around comes around,
and that saying is certainly proven true in this
story. Michael Zezima sometimes fed a stray
dog who lived in his neighborhood. This simple act of
kindness was later to save his life.
During the blizzard of 1978, the New York area was
pummeled by a severe snow storm. Michael was walking home and came upon a woman who couldn’t make
it to her own house because of the waist-high drifts. He
helped her to the home of one of her friends and then
took off towards his own home which was only two
blocks away. But the snow and his exhaustion from
helping the woman proved too much for him.
Michael collapsed in the street.
Cold and alone, his body stiff and numb, Michael
thought he would die. Then the dog that Michael had
been feeding chanced upon him. Seeing his friend’s desperate condition, the dog lay down on top of Michael
and kept him warm. As he cuddled Michael he barked
loudly for help. For three hours the two lay locked in
embrace, their bodies creating the only warmth they had
to keep them alive. Finally someone heard the dog’s persistent barking. Michael was rescued and taken to the
hospital. The dog refused to leave Michael’s side and
the doctors decided to allow him to stay at the hospital
that day.
Michael recovered and adopted the dog.
T
he small orange kitten kept watch over a dying
child. So steadfast was her vigil that the kitten
refused to leave, even to eat. The child had cancer and was wasting away.
Even after the adults had gotten too sleepy to stay
up any longer and had gone to bed, the little cat sat like
a soft sentry near the child’s head, calmly watching.
Whenever the child awoke, she never felt alone in the
darkness for she saw her kitten’s beautiful gold eyes
upon her. The child knew she never had to be alone or
afraid.
Sometimes the kitten was sent outside by misunderstanding humans. She would then leap to the child’s
window and scratch on the glass, trying to get back to be
at the child’s bedside.
The child died. A little later, the kitten died of a similar type of cancer. Like a tiny angelic being, the kitten
had helped her child move gently from this world to the
next. But the people who had witnessed all this saw only
a tiny orange kitten lying on a child’s bed.
In ancient Japan, cats were held in such high regard that
they were often kept on leashes; they were considered
too precious to roam free. During the seventeenth century, when vermin overran the country and threatened the
silk industry, the government declared all cats must be
free and able to hunt. The country’s economy was saved.

In a children’s hospital, as part of a program to bring

Dreams and Genes.... Continued from page 25
For example, the more I marginalized my bear’s parallel world, the wilder my blood pressure fluctuations
became. With increased awareness and coherence, you
are less likely to view your genetics as either good or
bad, but as signposts showing you the way to your
whole self. This dreamland viewpoint is different from
Darwin’s CR principle of survival of the fittest. In
dreamland, all energies and essences are held in equal
value.
The point of this exercise is to discover various perspectives and to see the value in each. You interacted
with your dreamgenes, your psychogenetic map, and
perhaps you got to its essence, the force trying to cocreate your universe. In a way, the marginalization1and
irritations of your childhood dream also are linked to
your cultural history and your family, and the energies
(values, characteristics, attributes) they have accepted
or marginalized.
Your symptoms express how the force of your
dreaming re/acts to the boundary conditions you needed in order to maintain your particular identity.
Coherence changes these conditions. From the dreamland viewpoint, CR genetic expression linked with illness offers potential opportunities and gifts.
interacts with radio waves informing the ship where to
go, we can understand better how awareness might
affect the body. Without awareness, your body problems are local CR symptoms with possible genetic
causes. Awareness, sensitivity to the dreamland and
essence levels of symptoms, changes everything.
Awareness allows you to discover and surf your pilot
wave, so that your whole body feels better. Through
feeling more in touch with your whole self, your life
reorganizes. Not only do your dreamland parts interact
differently, but all your body parts interact in new ways.
Either directly, or indirectly through other body
parts, dreamland and essence surfing experiences
unpredictably influence the genetic problem localized
in the space and time of your cells. That’s how dreams
influence genes. The original somatic genetic disturbance is either relieved or becomes less significant as
new multidimensional life experiences emerge.

Backaction and the Path with Heart
From the essence viewpoint, from the force of
silence, your personal myth is partially represented in
dreamland as clusters of dream figures, and in biology
as genes. All these figures are superimposed, like the
various colors of the rainbow, creating a diversity of
possibilities in life. They all sum up to an overall glow,
your personal myth whose essence is the force of
silence. Your timeless self, like the pilot wave, is nonlocal. Marginalizing one of its overtones stresses that tone
(that dream figure) and makes that parallel world a troublesome and symptomatic one for you in everyday reality—as a source of body symptoms.
In effect, by accepting your various tones, you create a sense of harmony and a new theater we might call
the path with heart. If David Bohm and Richard
Feynman were alive today, I can imagine their comments. Feynman is saying, “Yes, the path with heart:
that is the sum of all possible histories, all those virtual
realities, all the possible paths you have taken in parallel worlds.” And I hear Bohm saying, “Of course, and
once you use your awareness on your ship, you create a
backaction with your pilot wave. That’s what I meant
when I said that a particle can influence its quantum
wave functions. It directs you, and you direct it.”

symptom of an illness precisely indicates its emotional origin. Thus, far
from being an enemy, the physical

the physical disease as well as resolution of the emotional imbalance that
created it. .In The Biogenealogy Sourcebook, Flèche systematically
chronicles all the major organs of the body and specifies the types of
emotional conflicts that lead to illness in those areas.

The Kingdom of Agarttha
A Journey into the Hollow Earth
By Marquis Alexandre Saint-Yves d’Alveydre
Introduction by Joscelyn Godwin
The underground realm of Agarttha was first
introduced to the Western world in 1886 by the
French esoteric philosopher Alexandre SaintYves d’Alveydre with his book Mission de l’Inde,
translated here for the first time into English.
Saint-Yves’s book maintains that deep below
the Himalayas were enormous underground
cities, which were under the rule of a sovereign
pontiff known as the Brahâtma. Ruled in accordance with the highest
principles, the kingdom of Agarttha, sometimes known as Shambhala,
represents a world that is far advanced beyond our modern culture, both
technologically and spiritually. Saint-Yves explains that the secret world of
Agarttha, and all its wisdom and wealth, would be made available for
humanity when Christianity and all other known religions of the world b
egan truly honoring t1heir own sacred teachings.

Original Christianity
A New Key to Understanding
the Gospel of Thomas
and other Lost Scriptures
Witness to Roswell
Unmasking the 60-Year Cover-Up
By Thomas J. Carey
and Donald R. Schmitt
By Peter Novak
The work of scholars such as Elaine Pagels and
Marvin Meyer have captured the imagination of the
public by setting forth the Gospel of Thomas and
other lost teachings of Jesus. Now Peter Novak, in
Original Christianity, brings forth a critical element
essential for fully understanding these scriptures.
Novak argues that the authors of these early texts subscribed to the Binary
Soul Doctrine—an ancient belief system that allows for both reincarnation
and an eternal afterlife. Novak’s interdisciplinary approach offers fresh
insights on the beliefs and politics of the early church founders. He points
out that reincarnation was a commonly held Christian belief until it was voted
out of “official” Christianity and the record expunged. This newfound key
reveals the true identities of many mysterious Biblical figures, such as
Lazarus, Barabbas, Judas, and especially the Apostle Thomas, who may not
only have been Jesus’ identical twin brother, but indeed a second Christ in
his own right, who lived to produce a genetically identical bloodline.
Witness to Roswell will hold readers
spellbound as you read the actual eyewitness testimony to an amazing event;
the recovery of a UFO in 1947 just outside of Roswell, New Mexico. Witnesses
will not only reveal that the alien crew
were placed in body bags and packed
in dry ice, but most astonishing of all,
that one of them survived the crash.
Witness to Roswell exhaustively presents
accounts of witnesses to the crash, the military containment and recovery, the high level of security surrounding all phases of the cleanup
operation, deathbed testimonies, sealed posthumous statements, and
the extreme measures the U.S. government has taken to prevent people from telling the truth.

The Return of the Great Mother
By Christine R. Page, M.D.
This is an extraordinary time in the planet’s history. In 2012, for the first time in
almost 26,000 years, our sun will be most
closely aligned to the Galactic Center.
This Galactic Alignment, which began
with the Harmonic Convergence in 1987
and will conclude in 2023, presents a
thirty-six-year window of opportunity for
humanity to participate in the creation of
a new era of expanded consciousness.
Christine Page explains that, as the source of all creation, our galaxy
is the Great Mother and its center, her heart. Auspiciously aligning
Earth with the heart of the Great Mother, the Galactic Alignment heralds a rebirth of the divine feminine qualities of the Triple Goddess-intuition, emotional creativity, and renewal. Drawing on alchemy and
