The award recognizes Memorial Hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients, and signifies that Memorial Hospital has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations. To receive this award, Memorial Hospital consistently followed the treatment guidelines in the ACTION Registry–GWTG Premier for 8 consecutive quarters and met a performance standard of 90% for specific 01 SECTION: 01 | MEMORIAL MILESTONES performance measures. Following these treatment guidelines improves adherence to ACC/AHA Clinical Guideline recommendations, monitors drug safety and the overall quality of care provided to ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non- ST- elevation myocardial infarction patients (NSTEMI). ACTION Registry–GWTG is a partnership between the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the American Heart Association with partnering support from the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. This partnership has empowered health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establish a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk STEMI and NSTEMI patients. MEMORIAL ANNUAL REPORT 2013 -2014 “ THE HOSPITAL’S GOAL IS TO SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE MORTALITY RATE OF PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HEART ATTACKS BY TEACHING EVERY MAN AND WOMAN TO RECOGNIZE AND REACT TO THE EARLY SYMPTOMS. ” DR. KEVIN LEWIS Chief Medical Officer Memorial Named Top 100 Great Community Hospital Memorial Health Care System receives Chest Pain Center Reaccreditation Memorial Hospital has been named to the 2014 edition of 100 Great Community Hospitals, a list based on community hospitals' accolades, quality and service to their communities by Becker's Hospital Review. Memorial Health Care System has announced that Memorial Hospital and Memorial Hospital Hixson have received full chest pain center reaccreditation. According to the Becker’s Hospital Review article, the hospitals that made the list have fewer than 550 beds and have continually worked to provide the quality of care and the experience patients deserve and expect. Memorial Hospital is a 336 bed hospital that has provided healthcare services throughout southeast Tennessee and North Georgia since 1952. The Becker’s Hospital Review team selected hospitals for inclusion based on rankings and awards from iVantage Health Analytics, Truven Health Analytics, CareChex and the American Hospital Association. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with approximately 600,000 people dying annually of the disease. More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain. Memorial Health Care System Chief Medical Officer Kevin Lewis M.D says, “The hospital’s goal is to significantly reduce the mortality rate of people experiencing heart attacks by teaching every man and woman to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a possible heart attack, reduce the time it takes to receive treatment, and increase the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment. The hospital’s recent reaccreditation is an important achievement for people across the area. By operating accredited chest pain centers to serve patients in Chattanooga, Hixson and the surrounding areas, Memorial Health Care System has significantly raised the SECTION: 01 | MEMORIAL MILESTONES 02 GIVE. BUILD. GROW. quality of care for chest pain patients and has demonstrated its commitment to higher standards of care.” As accredited chest pain centers, Memorial Hospital and Memorial Hospital Hixson have demonstrated expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and undergoing an onsite review by a team of Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC) accreditation review specialists. Key areas in which the SCPC must demonstrate expertise include: (1) integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system (2) assessing, diagnosing and treating patients quickly (3) having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care (4) ensuring Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training (5) continually seeking to improve processes and procedures. To determine rankings, the CMS study looked at the number of times patients were readmitted to a hospital within 30 days of discharge and how often patients suffered serious complications after surgery. Barbara Flowers with her grandchildren. Memorial’s Joint Replacement Center offers total or partial joint replacement by the best surgical, nursing and rehabilitation staff in the region. Many of the orthopedic surgeons on staff at Memorial are fellowship-trained and highly experienced, having performed 1,762 hip and knee replacements annually at Memorial Hospital. Patients having hip and knee replacement at Memorial receive a broad spectrum of care before, during and after their procedure, including a personalized rehabilitation program, resulting in exceptional outcomes. Memorial’s Joint Replacement Center patients are invited to participate in a progressive rehabilitation program, designed to get patients active and self-sufficient as soon as possible. In order to ensure the best results, patients receive personalized physical and occupational therapy services designed to fit their individual needs. Memorial Hospital was the only facility in Chattanooga, TN included in the 97 best hospitals list. Dr. and Mrs. Ondrej Lisy SECTION: 01 | MEMORIAL MILESTONES 04 GIVE. BUILD. GROW. It has been an exciting year full of growth at Memorial Foundation, for the staff and for the board. In September we celebrated the 22nd Annual Memorial Golf Invitational, arguably one of the best tournaments in town. In January MESSAGE FROM FOUNDATION BOARD CHAIR Holly L. Harwell Pink! 2014 crossed the $1.5M mark in funds raised to support breast cancer care in our region. In December we publically announced the Rees Skillern Cancer Institute, which is now under construction. And in June we opened the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center, a highlight of efforts by the Inspired Heroes: Campaign for Memorial team charged with raising $15 million toward Memorial’s monumental expansion project. In this report, we spotlight the last year’s successes and show you how we have put your generous contributions to work providing the highest level of health care for our region. Memorial depends on community support more than ever to advance the latest technologies in patient care. Thanks to your continued generosity, Memorial will remain a strong health care provider for you and your family and to thousands who live in our region. It’s been a year for growth and preparation for the future. We are so thankful to everyone who made this year such a success for the Memorial Health Care System and the Foundation. Thank you for supporting Memorial! Holly L. Harwell Board Chair, 2013-2014 05 SECTION: 01 | MEMORIAL MILESTONES MEMORIAL ANNUAL REPORT 2013 -2014 “WHEN YOU LEARN, TEACH. Zan Guerry FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS 2013 - 2014 07 Family Waiting Area Dedicated in Honor of Pat and Carolyn Robinson Memorial Announces Rees Skillern Cancer Institute On Sunday, August 18, 2013 friends and relatives from all over Tennessee and Georgia traveled to Chattanooga for the dedication of a new surgery family waiting area at Memorial. Long-time Memorial volunteers Pat & Carolyn Robinson were honored for their gift to the Foundation that named the waiting area. Father Charlie Burton from St. Jude Catholic Church, where Pat and Carolyn are members, was invited to give the blessing for the reception. Special remarks were shared by Lisa Fitzsimmons, service line administrator for surgery, and Sister Eileen Wrobleski, C.S.C., senior vice president of mission integration. To close the event, Pat and Carolyn themselves shared words of thanks to those in attendance and spoke fondly of their experience with Memorial over the years. They expressed how grateful they are for the blessings of life that have allowed them to be a part of Memorial’s service to this community, as well as to leave a legacy during a time of innovation and expansion. Fred and Bettye Skillern lost their only son to cancer two years ago at the age of 49. Rees, a business leader and investor, battled cancer for many years and received much of his treatment at Memorial, including a lengthy stay in the oncology inpatient unit surrounded by his loving family and friends. Rees expressed his wish that his estate be used to benefit others, and Mr. and Mrs. Skillern are honoring his wishes with a $3 million gift to the Memorial Foundation for the advancement of cancer care in our community. SECTION: 02 | FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS “Rees was so giving, and we wanted his giving spirit and his memory to live on at Memorial,” said Fred Skillern. “It was very important to us that part of this gift would be used for additional research opportunities in this community, where it would be most beneficial to our friends, family and neighbors.” MEMORIAL ANNUAL REPORT 2013 -2014 In honor of Rees, Memorial’s total cancer program will now be called the Rees Skillern Cancer Institute. This will be the umbrella name over programs including the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center, the H. Clay Evans Johnson Radiation Center, the Schmissrauter Center for Cancer Support, and all other special programs. In addition to exterior and interior renovations of the Institute, the generous gift will fund the new Memorial Cancer Risk and Survivorship Center which will offer three highly specialized services that will make a tremendous difference in the early detection and treatment of cancer and offer services that are currently not available in the Chattanooga region. The center will be the first dedicated, high risk genetic counseling clinic in the area. Though Memorial has been providing cancer risk counseling for 15 years, this will provide the opportunity to make genetic testing part of the total picture for early detection and more accurate diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Memorial will develop the first dedicated, multidisciplinary resource for adult cancer survivors, empowering survivors to maximize their health, quality of life and longevity. The center will also provide information on the prevention, detection and treatment complications that can result from cancer treatment. Memorial plans to give cancer patients in the area greater access to the latest treatments for cancer. While Memorial will not be performing laboratory research, it will increase the emphasis on research. The number of clinical trails and the amount of research available is expected to increase at an accelerated rate. Carolyn Robinson “WE ARE AT A CROSSROADS OF EXCITING NEW WAYS TO IMPROVE CANCER DETECTION AND TREATMENT FOR EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY, CREATING A LEGACY OF ADVANCED CANCER CARE AT MEMORIAL BENEFITING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY. ” - JAMES HOBSON CEO, Memorial Health Care System “We are at a crossroads of exciting new ways to improve cancer detection and treatment for everyone in the community, creating a legacy of advanced cancer care at Memorial benefiting thousands of people throughout our community.” said James Hobson, CEO, Memorial Health Care System. “Expanding Memorial’s multi-faceted approach of oncology services would not be possible without the Skillerns’ generosity and the many dedicated supporters of the Memorial Foundation.” Dr. Ted Arrowsmith SECTION: 02 | FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS 08 GIVE. The family of Richard and Barbara Kramer 09 SECTION: 02 | FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS MEMORIAL ANNUAL REPORT 2013 -2014 Kramer Family Cardiac Imaging Center Dedication On Monday morning, June 9, 2014, Rich and Barbara Kramer stood with their three children, their son-in-law, and Barb’s father as cardiac physicians and staff from Memorial surrounded them in the Kramer Family Imaging Center, part of the new heart and vascular center. It was a special moment for Rich and Barb to share with their children, who live in Alabama, North Carolina and Franklin, Tennessee, and with Barb’s father, who was celebrating his 92nd birthday. Dr. William Oellerich spoke to the Kramer family about what the center will mean to the community. He stressed the importance of having a regional center that offers comprehensive imaging services dedicated to cardiac patients, designed to offer privacy and preserve the dignity of the patient during a visit. Foundation President and Chief Development Officer Jennifer Nicely recognized Rich and Barb for their years of volunteer service with the Memorial Auxiliary, their leadership roles on the Auxiliary Board, and the investments they have made over the years to help build a legacy of patient care that also includes the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center and the Buz Standefer Lung Center. Memorial President Rick Napper (left) with Richard Kramer. Rich Kramer, speaking for the family, shared how much it has meant to them over the years to support patient care at Memorial. “Little did we know how years of escorting patients all over the hospital would influence our decision for where our next gift would go. “Patient privacy. Convenience. Comfort. These are the words that struck us when we first discussed this space with Jennifer.” “Our inspiration is the people in this room, the staff and volunteers who uphold Memorial’s core values to serve patients and their families. To Barb and me, you are the heroes.” Memorial staff, volunteers and friends gather for the Kramer Family Cardiac Imaging Center dedication. SECTION: 02 | FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS 10 GIVE. BUILD. GROW. Guerry Heart & Vascular Center Blessing and Dedication Ceremony On Monday, June 9, 2014, more than 250 guests were in attendance for the blessing and dedication ceremony of the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center. Among the crowd were representatives from local and state government, community leaders, Foundation donors, Catholic Health Initiatives CEO Kevin Lofton, and Memorial physicians and staff. Memorial Health Care System CEO Jim Hobson expressed his deep gratitude for the blessings of God to build the center. He thanked the Governor’s office, the Hospital and Foundation Boards, the physicians at Memorial, Catholic Health Initiatives, and the Guerry family. John and Zan Guerry spoke on behalf of the Guerry family, whose commitment through their family’s foundation not only named the center but was the lead gift to Memorial’s $15 million Inspired Heroes campaign. It set the tone for the campaign team over the next 12 months as they engaged with Foundations, business leaders and other individuals throughout our community who could help advance Memorial’s mission of care. As one of the Inspired Heroes co-chairs, Zan described the fun he had working on the campaign with his daughter, Alexis Bogo, who was then chairing the Foundation Board of Directors. He cited the importance Memorial places on bringing together both the latest in technology and the best people to practice medicine as a reason he agreed to take on the project. He shared, “for every dollar that we raised, Catholic Health Initiatives gave us $20 more. That kind of return on a fundraising campaign was unheard of until now.” Dr. Eric Conn, a member of the physician fundraising team for the Inspired Heroes campaign and cardiologist with Chattanooga Heart Institute, shared that the center is a dream come true for the team of cardiac physicians he has worked with over the years, who desired an all-inclusive center for patients to receive preventative screenings, early detection and diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation services in one location that is beautifully designed to create a 11 SECTION: 02 | FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS soothing and comfortable patient experience. Kevin Lofton, CEO of Catholic Health Initiatives, addressed the crowd, saying, “I’m so proud to see this become a reality.” He spoke of Memorial as being a leading health care provider in the United States, citing excellent care and the positive response to the changing needs of the community as reasons for its success over the past 60 years. “Memorial is getting bigger and better,” he stated, “We chose Chattanooga to make a $330 million investment because we believe in what you are doing to prepare for the future of health care.” About The Center Almost half of the $15 million raised during the Inspired Heroes: Campaign for Memorial helped build the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center. The 300,000 sq. ft., seven-story patient tower includes seven cardiac catheterization rooms, a cardiac short-stay unit, a critical-care unit, interventional radiology rooms, a dedicated imaging center, and 96 patient beds. 19,000 cubic yards of concrete and 1,200 tons of steel were used to construct the building. The Lehman Family Center for Cardiac Rehabilitation (scheduled to open in 2015) will seamlessly integrate into the Guerry Center and will be a facility focused on community wellness. A healing garden and quiet space for visitors and family allow for peaceful reflections. The Foundation Board and staff are grateful to the generosity of so many throughout the community to help build this center, including those who were major investors in the Inspired Heroes campaign to benefit this beautiful new space. Red Carpet Celebration On Friday, June 13, 2014, Memorial physicians, staff, and volunteers welcomed more than 200 Inspired Heroes campaign donors to a special red carpet celebration in the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center. Event attendees were welcomed by a photographer to have their pictures taken on the red carpet before being greeted in the lobby with glasses of champagne and keys to a special treasure chest, which only 5 MEMORIAL ANNUAL REPORT 2013 -2014 keys could open. Five lucky couples chose from gift certificates to Healthy Glow Studio, Rock Creek, Bluff View Art District, Natural Body, and an iPad mini. Guests enjoyed specialty drinks like Heartburn and Double Bypass, created by Pete Lapina and his team at Black Tie Affair, and gourmet hors d’oeuvres by chef Greg Hicks. Tours of the new center were offered, and everyone enjoyed live music by Richard Eady and David Walters. The legacy of Memorial Health Care System lies in the hearts of people who place a high value on having world class health care in our community. Memorial is grateful to the Inspired Heroes campaign team, led by Scotty Probasco, Zan Guerry and Dr. Bill Stacy. Many people gave unselfishly of their time and their treasure, and every gift strengthened Memorial’s dedication to being among the best hospitals in the nation, providing world class health care to our citizens for generations to come. Transformational Gifts The Memorial Health Care System Foundation is grateful to the forward thinking families who have made transformational gifts to Memorial. LA PHILHARMONIC VIOLINIST ROBERT GUPTA SHARES HOW MUSIC IS MEDICINE AT THE 13TH ANNUAL CAM BUSCH ENDOWED ART FOR HEALTH LECTURE SERIES Memorial Health Care System Foundation hosted the thirteenth annual Cam Busch Endowed Arts for Health Lecture Series and Gallery Party on Friday, May 9th, 2014 in the Heart and Vascular Center. Still under construction at the time. Los Angeles Philharmonic violinist, Robert Gupta, moved the sold out crowd of more than 200 attendees with his emotional accounts of the healing power of music in the lives of the mentally ill, imprisoned, and homeless in Los Angeles. At only 19 years old, Robert found himself caught between a career as a doctor and as a violinist. Despite the odds, he traveled from New York to California to audition for the LA Philharmonic; the rest, as they say, is history. He and a fellow violinist began visiting "skid row" - a downtown LA district where 3,000 - 6,000 homeless people reside today; it did not take long to develop the vision for Street Symphony, a non profit organization dedicated to bringing live, classical music to these mentally ill, imprisoned and homeless men, women and children. The extraordinary work of the Street Symphony engages the musical community of Los Angeles with the underserved of Skid Row's Midnight Mission, the Twin Towers jail and other populations marginalized by society. Through this work, Robert shared how he has witnessed the power of music to bring clarity, relief and healing to the minds of those suffering from PTSD, Alzheimers disease and other mental disorders. Robert's lecture and performance on the second floor of the new Heart and Vascular Center, which opened in July 2014, gave attendees a sneak peek at the space. 21 SECTION: 02 | FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS On the first floor, local and regional artists mingled with the crowd to view a collection of their works, on display throughout the Heart and Vascular Center. Each piece specifically chosen by Memorial’s art selection committee and sponsored, with permanent recognition displayed when the pieces were placed in the completed building. Pieces are still available for sponsoring. The purpose of the lecture series is to acquaint the community with the importance of art in the healing process. Over the past 14 years, this series has had the privilege of hosting well-known artists, musicians, poets, performing artists and academics from around the country. An Investment in the Healthcare of the Future Thomas O. Duff, Jr. (1913 – 2013) Thomas Oliver Duff, Jr. was known as a gracious business leader and civic giant. His family’s connection with the wholesale pharmaceutical industry spanned more than a century, beginning in the early 20th century with his father’s regional company and ending in the early 21st century as a part of the largest pharmaceutical wholesaler in the world. Mr. Duff was truly committed to Memorial and its mission and he enjoyed being part of its growth and success. That is why he made the decision to make a planned gift to the Memorial Foundation through a provision in his will. Mr. Duff viewed his gift as a way to ensure the future of the services and programs Memorial provides to the community. We are honored that his legacy and work at Memorial will carry on through this gift. The Duff’s generosity is recognized in the new St. Anne’s Chapel located in the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center. Planned gifts are structured to support the philanthropic interests of the donor, and may also provide significant tax savings or income for the donor or a designated beneficiary. For more information on planned giving, contact M. Wade Kelley in the Memorial Foundation Office at 423-495-7438. 31 SECTION: 05 | GIVING SOCIETIES Thomas O. CARING SPIRIT PROGRAMS The current environment of health care is rapidly changing, but Memorial is committed to providing our community with the same quality of care you’ve come to expect from Memorial Health Care System. We all have a story to tell about a physician who took the time to listen and understand our cares and concerns or a nurse who paid attention to the little things to make us comfortable. Simple gestures like these can leave a lasting impression and set the standard for great health care. Often times, our patients and their family members turn to Memorial’s Caring Spirit program as a way to give back. patient care, quality and patient safety, state-of-the-art equipment and technology, and they touch the lives of thousands throughout our community. Thanks to contributions to the Caring Spirit program from grateful patients and family members, programs like the newly named Rees Skillern Cancer Institute at Memorial, the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center, and the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center of Excellence receive national recognition for innovative models of 41 SECTION: 09 | CARING SPIRITS PROMOTIONS MEMORIAL ANNUAL REPORT 2013 -2014 “PLEASE ACCEPT THIS SMALL TOKEN OF OUR APPRECIATION FOR A GREAT HOSPITAL EXPERIENCE, AND IN HONOR OF THE EXCEPTIONAL PHYSICIANS WHO HAVE MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE FOR OUR LIFE TOGETHER.” X X “IF IT HAD NOT BEEN FOR NURSE JUDY, I WOULD NEVER HAVE KNOWN THAT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL OFFERS HOME CARE SERVICES. Willie Harvey, Nola Brumit, Kathy Hixson, and Bob Greuter MEMORIAL AUXILIARY AND VOLUNTEER SERVICES Memorial Auxiliary and Volunteer Services Memorial Auxiliary Volunteers were honored as “Jewels of Memorial” for the special touch they added to this momentous year at Memorial. Large-scale project completions at both Memorial Glenwood and Memorial Hixson brought new opportunities and challenges to volunteers and staff, who were amazingly flexible in fulfilling their responsibilities. Volunteers became actors to stage the mock move in preparation for moving patients into the 96 new patient rooms in the new seven-story Guerry Heart and Vascular Center. They were also well represented in helping introduce the Hixson community to the spacious and comfortable environment of expansions at Memorial Hospital Hixson. The Volunteer Services Office is now located in the new Guerry Heart and Vascular Center near the main entrance where volunteers have been invaluable in guiding and escorting patients and visitors throughout the hospital. Other services 51 SECTION: 11 | added during 2013-2014 include assisting in Nursing Education and staffing information desks for the new Short Stay and Coronary Care Units. A total of 531 volunteers - including the Memorial Auxiliary, the American Red Cross, students, independent volunteers, and volunteer Eucharist ministers - provided 82,052 hours of service in 80 different areas of Memorial Health Care System. The strength of the volunteer organization was proved by its ability to respond to the many unforeseen requests for assistance. Inspired Volunteer Heroes In addition to giving of their time and talents, the Memorial Auxiliary raises funds to enhance patient care, and throughout its history has provided nearly $2 million dollars of funding support. In this current year, the Auxiliary MEMORIAL AUXILIARY AND VOLUNTEER SERVICES MEMORIAL ANNUAL REPORT 2013 -2014 continued to participate in the Inspired Heroes campaign to leave a lasting legacy in the new facilities. A pledge of $150,000 brought the “Helping Hand” stained glass window to the chapel and furnished a lovely family waiting room in the new Surgery Center in the South Tower. Another $75,000 was donated to help renovate the Memorial Hospital Hixson Emergency Department and Registration Area. As an encouragement to persons with cancer, the Auxiliary also gave $15,000 toward a beautiful weekend retreat for patients and loved ones at the Cohutta Resort Center in North Georgia. The Auxiliary Scholarship Program gave $10,000 to eight college students who met criteria in health related fields of study. OTHER EVENTS The 6th Annual Danette Henry Memorial Golf Tournament Raises more than $20,000 for Cancer Patients at Memorial On Saturday, September 14, 2013 seventy golfers gathered at Chatata Valley Golf Course in Cleveland, TN to honor the memory of Danette Henry at the 6th Annual Danette Henry Memorial Golf Tournament. Danette’s surviving family organize the tournament each year to raise awareness and support of ovarian cancer, a disease she fought for several years before she passed away in 2008. Proceeds from the annual event, totaling more than $103,000 in 6 years, benefit a fund set up in her name at Memorial Foundation, which is used to support cancer patients at Memorial. This year the tournament raised over $20,000, and thanks to the generosity of the tournament’s sponsors and players, infusion therapy patients will have a new library of DVD’s to use during 55 SECTION: 12 | OTHER EVENTS therapy sessions, which can last several hours. This library will help keep patients relaxed and their minds occupied during a difficult time. The infusion center will also receive a new vein finder, a practical piece of equipment that will greatly increase the comfort levels of these patients, and a chair-side call system for the nursing staff to be in closer contact with their patients. Last but not least, Memorial’s 4th floor oncology unit will be the recipient of a new blanket warmer with proceeds from this year’s tournament. GROW. 5th Annual Roll for a Cure Raises Over $7,700 for Breast Cancer Patients at Memorial On Saturday, September 28, 2013 more than 60 riders turned out for the 5th Annual Roll for a Cure to benefit the treatment programs of the MaryEllen Locher Breast Centers at Memorial. Thunder Creek Harley Davidson hosted the kick-off for the day’s ride, which had several stops throughout the day before ending with food and live music from the Old No. 7 Band. The annual Roll for a Cure holds a double meaning for these riders. The word “roll” is both a motorcycle term for the ride itself and the act of rolling a pair of dice for prizes at each of the stops along the way. With a true spirit of generosity, most cash prizes are donated back to benefit the cause, and the same was true on this day, as well. The total raised for the day, including donations and registration fees, came to more than $7,700 to benefit breast cancer patients at Memorial. Sitting in the waiting room of the MaryEllen Locher (MEL) Breast Center after the check presentation, one of the riders shared her personal battle with breast cancer. She was diagnosed last September and received treatments at a MEL Breast Center before a surgery to remove her right breast. One of her brothers shared, “There was not a single empty seat in the surgery waiting room. They were all there for us, for her.” A friend and fellow rider, whose own daughter-in-law was recently diagnosed, says “This group is family. What affects one of us affects us all.” Another rider added, “Yes, she is our inspiration and why we will continue to do this ride.” Southern Souls MC is grateful for the support of numerous businesses and individuals for this event, with special thanks to Thunder Creek Harley Davidson, the Old No. 7 Band, Widowmakers MC, the Barkmore Pet Hotel and Daycare, Country Chics’ Creations, Heil Trailer International Co., IBEW Local 1323, Tractor Supply Co., and Bruce Sheets. 57 SECTION: 12 | OTHER EVENTS Fraternal Order of Eagles On Saturday, May 31, 2014, the State of Tennessee Fraternal Order of Eagles presented Memorial Foundation President and Chief Development Officer Jennifer Nicely with a $5,000 grant for the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center at Memorial. The Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies’ Auxiliary also presented a check for more than $4,200 for the Guerry Center. The women not only organized a raffle event for one of their weekly Saturday night dances, they also included the proceeds from their Valentine’s Day heart ornament sale. The ornaments were used to decorate the Friendship Tree in the social room of their club, which is located off of Lee Highway in East Brainerd. The FOE Ladies’ Auxiliary was formed in 1946 and is comprised of more than 130 members. The Fraternal Order of Eagles is an international organization. It was formed in 1884 and its motto is “People Helping People.” They are long-time supporters of Memorial’s mission, donating funds over the years to advance patient care, including cardiac services, cancer services and more. It has been a stellar year for the Memorial Health Care System Foundation. I am both honored and humbled to be part of this wonderful organization whose faith-based mission inspires so many within our community to give generously of their time and their treasure. FROM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Jim Hobson Building on the success of last year, the Foundation set a new benchmark for growth in Fiscal Year 2014, with the $15 million Inspired Heroes capital campaign reaching its goal, a sell-out crowd for the ninth annual Pink! Gala, and record attendance at the 14th Annual Cam Busch Art for Health Lecture. This year was a time of joy and reflection as we paused to celebrate several significant events on the Memorial Hospital campus. Our plan to enhance oncology services for patients and survivors took a leap forward with a generous gift from Fred and Bettye Skillern to name the Rees Skillern Cancer Institute. More than 200 of our top donors and investors joined us in celebrating the naming of the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center and completion of our new 300,000 square-foot seven-story patient tower. An entrée to cardiac services, the tower houses 96 patient beds, seven new cardiac cath labs, interventional labs, a 22-bed cardiac short stay unit, a diabetes and weight management center, and a new chapel. Our donors, physicians, volunteers and associates have worked together to ensure that Memorial is the regional referral center of choice and that our patients receive the best possible care when faced with a health challenge. Thank you for your unwavering support of the Memorial Health Care System Foundation and the ministry of Memorial. Sincerely, James M.
