Rising
FILE UNDER: FOLK/COUNTRY www.mistyriverband.com
Described by Victory Review magazine as “one of the Pacific
Northwest’s finest groups,” the all-female quartet Misty River has
distinguished itself in the up-and-coming Americana market with
compelling harmonic vocals backed by fresh acoustic arrangements.
Misty River’s debut album, Rising, continues to receive widespread
national and international airplay since its release in June 2000, and
independent book and music stores report Rising as one of their topselling albums.
Showcasing the budding songwriting talent of its members, this
beautiful, introspective collection of original and traditional songs
independently sold over 5,000 copies prior to receiving a distribution
contract with BDC in July 2002. Guest artists include mandolin
extraordinaire John Reischman and bass virtuoso Glen Moore.
Misty River tours nationally and has performed hundreds of shows
including Tennessee’s Dollywood, California’s Strawberry Music
Festival, Silver Dollar City, and Seattle’s Northwest Folklife Festival.
Reviews of Rising speak to its appeal:
“This music is heavily steeped in the bluegrass, folk and country
traditions. But there’s also a modern edge which resembles the neobluegrass style of Alison Krauss or EmmyLou Harris.”—Minor7th.com
(Acoustic Guitar’s Webzine)
“If you are in the mood for something outside the bluegrass
mainstream, you could hardly do better than this very attractive
album….The four women are excellent singers and their voices blend
like milk and honey.”—Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine
“When these four women weave their lovely harmonies, it is spine
tingling.”—Jeff Douglas, Oregon Public Broadcasting-TV

Misty River
Live at the Backgate Stage
FILE UNDER: FOLK/COUNTRY www.mistyriverband.com
Long before the success of the soundtrack, Oh Brother, Where Art
Thou?, the all-female quartet Misty River was creating a name for
itself in the up and coming Americana market. Compelling harmonic
voices backed by fresh, acoustic arrangements have distinguished
Misty River as “one of the Pacific Northwest’s finest groups”* and as
one of the busiest independent bands in the Americana genre, with
hundreds of performances throughout the U.S.
Misty River’s second release, Live at the Backgate Stage, captures
their lively stage presence and beautiful pitch perfect harmonies
through a collection of their most widely requested songs. From
three stunning a cappella songs, to the popular and lovely
instrumental “Ashokan Farewell,” to the playful bluegrass feel of
“Black Pony,” the album takes the listener on an emotional journey
with this intimate live performance. Billy Oskay, formerly with the
Windham Hill label, co-produced the project.
Since the album’s release in February 2002, Live at the Backgate
Stage has earned Misty River a spot as one of the top-selling
Northwest bands in the Portland area (The Oregonian, 5/10/02.) The
album has also been featured as one of the top-selling CDs on
CDBaby.com.
Gaining both national and international airplay, Live at the
Backgate Stage is a blend of folk, country, and bluegrass styles that
appeals to a wide audience. As Tom Krumm, the music host for NPR
affiliate KLCC-FM says, “I can say, having listened to this CD several
times, how well it is done. The harmonies are amazing. [The album]
sounds seamless, like it’s all just one long wonderful performance.”

Misty River
Willow
Release Date: June 1, 2004
FORMATS: AAA/FOLK/AMERICANA/BLUEGRASS/CELTIC
www.mistyriverband.com
Misty River branches out from its traditional Americana roots to explore
new rhythmic, instrumental and harmonic colors with its third CD
release, Willow. The long-awaited studio follow-up to the band’s popular
live album, Willow is a 14-song collection crossing genres, continents and
time. The result is fresh and beautiful, making Willow Misty River’s most
evocative album to date.
Although often compared to the neo-bluegrass sound of Alison Krauss, the
vocal harmonies of The Trio, and singer-songwriters like Shawn Colvin,
these four women come together to create a sound that is all their own.
With Willow, Misty River’s eloquent songwriting, stunning vocals, and
tasteful acoustic instrumentation shine. Artistic contributions from
former Windham Hill artist and producer Billy Oskay and some of North
America’s leading instrumentalists (John Reischman, Hanz Araki, Tom
Creegan, Dale Adkins, Doug Smith, Greg Clarke and Rob Schnell) further
distinguish the album.
Willow captures the signature vocal blend featured on Misty River’s past
albums while highlighting the band’s willingness to take risks. A blend of
originals, traditionals, and fresh arrangements on songs by some of the
band’s favorite writers, Willow includes elements of pop, folk, Celtic,
Americana, bluegrass, old-time and even reggae, reaching a crossover
market larger than any of Misty River’s prior recordings. Willow takes the
listener on an emotional journey and proves why the band’s dedicated
and passionate fan base grows with every new recording.
Misty River includes: Carol Harley on guitar, banjo, mandolin and
ukulele; Chris Kokesh on fiddle and guitar; Dana Abel on accordion and
piano; and Laura Quigley on acoustic bass.

Stories
Formats: AAA/FOLK/AMERICANA/BLUEGRASS/CELTIC

Announcing Misty River's new CD STORIES.
Stepping on a city bus. Longing for home. Dreaming of being a tree. A
second chance at life. These are just a few of the stories you’ll hear as
Misty River explores the music of acoustic Americana. Songs with roots in
Appalachia, Ireland, China, the American South and the Pacific Northwest
are presented on an album that is sophisticated yet simple, honest and
transparent.
Although Misty River's music is often compared to the neo-bluegrass style
of Alison Krauss and the harmonies of The Trio (Emmylou Harris, Linda
Ronstadt and Dolly Parton), these four women have a sound all their own,
fusing the band's award-winning songwriting and compelling vocal
harmony with their distinctive acoustic instrumentation of accordion,
fiddle, guitar, banjo, ukulele, mandolin and upright bass.
STORIES is the fifth CD in Misty River’s ten year history as an “indie”
band, and Grammy award-winning producer Todd Phillips has eloquently
captured the group’s talent for revealing the beauty of a song. As Phillips
describes it, “Dana, Chris, Carol and Laura will tear your heart out—then
put it back, better off than before.”
Misty River includes: Carol Harley on guitar, banjo, mandolin and
ukulele; Chris Kokesh on fiddle and guitar; Dana Abel on accordion; and
Laura Quigley on acoustic bass.

Branching Out: Misty River’s trademark harmony is featured on this
lighthearted, humorous song written by John Gorka.
Old Memories (Mean Nothing to Me): Picture Quigley and Kokesh as
Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette on this Steve Young country classic.
Life Is Good: Harley draws on the gospel tradition to tell the story of her
second chance at life after battling melanoma skin cancer years ago.
Louisa: Fiddle and accordion duets give Abel’s southern California love
song a south-of-the-border feel.
Black Muddy River: Kokesh reflects on the restorative power of nature
in this beauty written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter.
Slice of Life: A bus ride down Portland’s Burnside Avenue inspired Abel’s
comical toe-tapper.
Time Goes By: Kokesh is solo and at her best on this intimate song about
letting go.
Turtle Dove: Based on an old Irish melody, Abel wrote lyrics and
arranged this love song for three-part acappela harmony.
Star of the County Down/Road to Lisdoonvarna/Connaughtman’s
Rambles: Beginning with a beautiful solemn melody and ending with an
upbeat fiddle tune, this instrumental trilogy transports the listener to
the Irish countryside.
Barbara Ellen: Quigley’s eloquent bass playing and passionate vocal is
featured on this centuries-old traditional.
Daylight Again: Three-part harmony vocals and Harley’s claw-hammer
style banjo deliver this war commentary by Stephen Stills.
Black Hawk: Quigley tells the tale of lovers Black Hawk and the White
Winged Dove in this Louisiana-rooted ballad by Daniel Lanois.
Gan Lan Shu (The Olive Tree): One of the most popular contemporary
songs in China, Kokesh sings this melancholy story of longing for home.
A Prayer Like Any Other: Harley closes the album with a simple offer of
thanks to Misty River’s fans and supporters over the past decade.

Midwinter—Songs of Christmas
FILE UNDER: FOLK/AMERICANA www.mistyriverband.com
Intimate, pure, beautiful—Midwinter.
The second new release from acoustic, Americana band Misty River
in 2004, Midwinter—Songs of Christmas is a stunning collection of
traditional favorites, little known classics, and original songs. The
result is a fresh yet intimate celebration of the holiday season, with
Misty River’s compelling voices, tasteful song selection and creative
instrumentation setting Midwinter apart from the run-of-the-mill
Christmas release.
Although often compared to the neo-bluegrass sound of Alison
Krauss, this seven-year old, “indie” band from the Pacific Northwest
has a sound all its own. Misty River has built a large and enthusiastic
following and become one of the most popular bands from the
region. National and international touring and frequent radio play
has spread the band’s music throughout the globe, with fans from
China, Norway, and Australia inquiring about how to buy Misty
River’s CDs.
As Jeff Douglas, OPB-TV’s executive producer of Oregon Art Beat writes:
“When these four women weave their lovely harmonies, it is spine tingling.
Oregon Art Beat broadcast a segment on Misty River and the response was
amazing. Our phones and website were jammed with requests to know where
they were playing and how to buy their CDs.”
Carol Swanson, www.christmasreviews.com raves “I cannot recommend this
album strongly enough…for anyone who appreciates stellar musical talent,
and especially for those who swoon at the sound of heavenly harmonies,
Misty River's Midwinter will steal your heart away. Magnificent.”
Midwinter was recorded by Justin King at Blackberry Hill Studios. Master
guitarist Doug Smith lends his talents to two of the tracks.
