A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DIANNE HILLIARD:
Greetings!
The days are getting a bit shorter and the nights a little chilly. A change of seasons
is certainly approaching!
Thanks to each and every one of you for the work you are doing for our Golf
Tournament fundraiser. Marilyn and Mary are doing an outstanding job as
Coordinators, as well as all members who are doing their part to participate.
I have full confidence that this will be a super event!
What a great candidate’s forum we had at our last program meeting! Not only did we get a chance to hear the
views of our Carson City candidates for the District Attorney and some for the Board of Supervisors, but we
also received some attention from the media. What a way to get the word out about Soroptimist! Don’t miss the
next round of candidates for the School Board, scheduled for September 10 meeting. We will have our business
meeting on September 24 to take care of last minute preparations for the Golf Tournament.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY
Mark Kreuger currently works in the DA’s office and is a mentor for new attorneys. He feels that
modernization through electronic discovery would be a helpful update to the DA’s office.
He feels that the addition of a therapy dog, Subaru, to help children through the
depositions and questioning is a new change that may even be carried over into the court
system. He also worked with the Attorney General’s office in Lyon County. He also is
not looking to seek a higher political office.
Jason Woodbury clerked for Judge Michael Griffin and has worked in the District Attorney’s office.
He has been in private practice since 2003 which has given him perspective regarding such issues as
budgeting, personnel management and team building.
He is married with three children and currently works with Bob Crowell and knows many
of the governmental issues facing Carson City.
Questions for the District Attorney Candidates:
CASA volunteers are concerned about the number of contacts required of minor victims.
Electronic filing is already in Clark and Washoe counties, therefore it will probably come to Carson in the near future.
The District Attorney’s office has both a criminal and civil division. The civil division needs leadership since the current attorney will
be retiring.
SUPERVISOR WARD 1
Karen Abowd is the incumbent who wishes to continue her vision of Carson City as a
“drive to” not “drive by” destination. She co-authored the 1% tax initiative that provides
funds for the animal shelter, streets and b & g. She feels that Carson City is raising the bar
and running the city like a business to revitalize the economy.
Karen feels that she is a bridge builder.
Lisa Helget worked for the Department of Transportation for 27 years and recognizes
the issue of gender equality such arenas as health care and the glass ceiling.
She hopes her voice is one of integrity and responsibility.
SUPERVISOR WARD 3
Lori Bagwell was the Deputy Director of Corrections and is currently the vice chair of the Board
of Equalization, the chair of the Redevelopment Committee and chair of Friends in Service
Helping. As a small business owner, Charlie’s Subs, she has a hometown vision. She cares about
seniors and children’s education. She is invested in living, working and visiting in a safe
environment. She feels that roads and building need work in Carson City and that contracts
should be given to local businesses to create jobs. She is an advocate of open meetings and
access to public records.
John McKenna is the incumbent who would like to continue the work he has become a part of.
He began in 2011 when the city spent much of its reserves. In 2012 the economy stabilized and
repairs were begun to the sewage system. 2013 also saw infrastructure improvements. Currently
the 2014 economy has picked up and budgeting for reserves for the next 5 years will be the focus.
A real concern is the fact that many of the major management staff members are close to
retirement age and where will be a transition in Public Works, Department of Transportation and
the City Manager. Looking forward to the future, there will be some infrastructure costs such as
new fire engines which are expensive. Lastly, cutting property taxes will be one of John’s agenda
items. He has spent 16 years as a school board member and is a CPA who understands both government
and business.
Questions for the Supervisors:
September 16th there will be a community meeting about the downtown corridor project scheduled for 2018.
The current system of bidding is set by the legislature with a cost versus experience rating giving priority points to local businesses.
