and Hoi-Polloi’s Shôn Dale-Jones, a thought-provoking seminar with
journalist Oggy Boytchev, Shakespearean sketches from the Guardian’s
John Crace and author John Sutherland, plus a lunchtime talk with

Add to this a feast of exciting new writing workshops, walks, talks,

THE NEW WORLD ORDER AND
THE RISE OF TERRORISM
With international bestselling author Tom Cutler
With international journalist Oggy Boytchev
A fun and informative workshop aimed at competent
beginners and writers looking to get published.
Drawing on decades of expertise in publishing and years of experience
as a bestselling author, Tom Cutler gets to grips with the nuts and bolts
of writing and publishing, revealing the tricks of the trade along the way.
The workshop will cover the basics of writing fiction and non-fiction, with
common pitfalls highlighted as well as the secrets of how to escape them.
Terrorism is on the rise. Militant Islam is just one strand
of what strategists call an ‘asymmetrical war’ against
the tenets of Western democracy. But a quarter century after the fall of
the Berlin Wall, journalist and writer Oggy Boytchev argues that the seeds
of the current turmoil were sown during the Cold War. As John Simpson’s
producer Oggy has covered decades of international conflict for the BBC
and having featured in last year’s Wordfest, Oggy returns by popular
request. A thought-provoking afternoon guaranteed.

This event takes place in the Ropetackle mezzanine.
‘Behan’s script is rich and elegant – a must see’ ~
Foreign Press Association
Two new plays from acclaimed writer/actor Janet Behan. Poignant and
funny, this double bill offers portraits of two very different Irish women
and the results of growing up in a theocracy.
Realtine: Deidre joins a creative writing class but week after week fails to
come up with a single word. Today the dam has burst and her story comes
pouring out and, with it, some long-buried secrets.
Noreen: Alone in her kitchen, normally shy Noreen is in full battle cry,
railing against her daughter, her husband, and her upwardly mobile
neighbours. But the neighbours aren’t really the problem.

Directed by Jessica Higgs. This event takes place in the Ropetackle auditorium.
Simon Brett author of the Charles Paris, Mrs Pargeter,

JULES GRANT BOOK LAUNCH
‘Beautifully written, funny, agonising, unflinching. It reads
like a classic.’ ~ Toby Litt
Wordfest is delighted to welcome a talented and original new
writer, Jules Grant, to talk about her stunning first novel: We
Go Around In The Night And Are Consumed By Fire. Voiced
by Donna and her streetwise god-daughter Aurora, this thrillingly original
crime novel unfolds at breakneck speed. Lesbian gangster and street
poet Donna runs the all-female Bronte Close Gang. Carla, single parent
and part-time MC, is her closest friend and trusted second-in-command.
Together they carve out an empire in the toughest streets of Manchester.
But when Carla is gunned down everything changes.
Jules Grant has an MA in Creative Writing from Birkbeck College, University of
London and has worked as a barrister for over twenty years.
SUSSEX FOLKLORE
With local historian Chris Hare
In 1868, the pioneering folklorist Charlotte
Latham collected nearly 200 superstitions
and traditions she found ‘lingering’ in rural and coastal Sussex. In
2015, volunteers from the South Downs Society’s ‘Secret Shore’ project
interviewed people living in the county to see if any of these beliefs still
exist today or whether new superstitions have arisen in place of the
old. The results will surprise, even astonish you. Historian and project
manager Chris Hare will discuss what the team discovered.

THE DUKE
Produced by Hoi Polloi in
association with Save The Children
An original new drama by the creator of Hugh
Hughes and award-winning BBC writer Shôn Dale-Jones. The Duke is a funny
and poignant comedy which gently challenges us to think about our priorities
in a world full of crisis. “As I sat coming to the frightening realisation that the
film script I had been writing for the last ten years no longer fits in a world
spiralling out of control, my mother called to tell me the Duke Of Wellington,
a porcelain figure my father bought for £750 as an investment in 1974, had
broken while dusting. It seemed there were three problems to be fixed, the
script, the world and the porcelain figure.”
Shôn is donating his fee and all profits from this evening to Save The Children in aid
of child refugees. Please give generously to the after-show collection.

How much do you love your daughter? Do you love her enough to bind her
feet, if that means she can have a life of wealth and luxury?
In this talk about her memoir, Bound Feet Blues - A Life Told in Shoes,
writer/performer Yang-May Ooi explores the love that drove mothers to
bind their daughters’ feet in ancient China – and why remembering the
brutal practice of foot-binding is still relevant for us as modern, Western
women today. Bound Feet Blues interweaves the story of Yang-May’s
great-grandmother whose feet were bound, with the author’s own
personal coming-out story to explore what it means to be a woman, not
just in ancient times in the East, but also for us today in the West.
The talk will be illustrated with historical photos and family archive
pictures. Yang-May will read sections from her memoir and also perform a
short extract from the stage version of Bound Feet Blues.

FLIGHTS OF FANTASY:
TOGETHER AS ONE:
EXHIBITION BY JAMES
KINGSTON-STEWART
GREGG KOFI BROWN
& SAM KELLY
In this major exhibition of extraordinary
work, on public display for the first time,
James Kingston-Stewart brings to his art
all of the originality and technical brilliance
that has made him one of the country’s top
exhibition designers, with credits including
the renovated Brunel ship, SS Great Britain,
and the prestigious European Museum
Design Award.
A new musical project bringing
together Gregg Kofi Brown of British
Afro-pop band Osibisa with Sam
Kelly of legendary British funk outfit
Cymande.
Displaying his skill as an illustrator, painting in a variety of media,
Kingston-Stewart captures themes which intrigue him, with elements of
juxtaposition such as modern Japanese artefacts set against a backdrop
of 18th century prints of Mount Fuji, and illusory images which twist
perceptions; power stations and Dan Dare inspired space spoofs. Even
a conventional townscape splices together separate views. The works
explore the effects of homogeneity and contrast in colour.
Both experienced and influential
musicians, Kofi Brown has worked
with a host of acclaimed artists
including most notably Sting, and has
even starred in numerous West End
shows from The Buddy Holly Story to The Blues Brothers.
Enjoy an evening of vibrant feel-good
music that draws on Cymande’s
back beat ‘calypso’ sound, and the
colourful African vibes of Osibisa.
This exhibition takes places in the Ropetackle foyer space.

Sam Kelly is an internationally renowned drummer whose career spans no

VULA VIEL
“One of my discoveries for the 2015 London Jazz Festival”
~ Gilles Peterson
Vula Viel means ‘good is good’ in Dagaare, the language of the tribe in
Upper West Ghana where Bex Burch lived, farmed and studied for three
years. Now it is the name of her group featuring the best of London’s
young musical talent: Dan Nicholls (bass synth/keys), George Crowley
(sax), and two drummers Simon Roth and Dave De Rose.
Their intensely rhythmic music is an engaging mix of African, electronica
and minimalist influences. Based around the Gyil (the Dagaare xylophone

LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR
EXCELLENT SONGS FOR CHILDREN
49
BOX OFFICE:
Alan Barnes and Gilad Atzmon, two of Britain’s most celebrated virtuoso
reed players, join forces for what they promise will be one of the definitive
jazz nights in British history! On the face of it their collaboration would
seem as unlikely as chalk with cheese, but despite their different
backgrounds and approaches, the two musicians share an immense
passion for performance and a firm belief that a jazz audience is there not
to be educated but to be entertained. They also share a healthy sense of
competition as Alan explains: “I love our gladiatorial, or even Giladiatorial
exchanges; the music is lit by shafts of wit”. Alan and Gilad promise to give
the Great American Songbook a good shaking, dropping fruits of bop and
post-bop and fermenting with outrageous originals from deep in the barrel.
Expect an evening of humour and superb music by a specially put together
band featuring Frank Harrison (piano, electronics), Yaron Stavi (bass), and
Chris Higginbottom (drums).

The Faces, meets Dexys Midnight Runners!
Eight years, five albums, thousands of gigs, Glastonbury, Leeds Arena,

in Shoreham last year followed by a sell-out show).
His show at Ropetackle will be a refreshing evening of pure soulful talent,

UNDERGROUND
OCTET
“Truly inspirational.”
Formed in 2014 the Mingus
Underground Octet features some of
the finest jazz musicians in the south
east and London, most of whom are
band-leaders and recording artists in
their own right. The octet is dedicated
to capturing the excitement and spirit of jazz bassist and composer
Charles Mingus’s music, and to give audiences the opportunity to hear his
unique legacy performed live by a large ensemble.
Mingus combined composition and collective improvisation to create a
unique sound that was at once provocative and avant-garde, yet rooted in
the jazz tradition alongside blues and gospel. The octet will play music
from some of Mingus’s classic albums as well as reinterpretations of
his arrangements, and will feature performance poet Gilli Bloodaxe
performing Mingus’s ‘The Clown’. The octet has performed to great
acclaim across the south, including our very own inaugural South Coast
Jazz Festival. Highly recommended.

AFRICAN NIGHT FEVER PRESENTS:
ZONG ZING ALLSTARS XMAS PARTY!
African Night Fever returns with the tropical rhythms and dance of tropical
Kinshasa with the formidable mighty Zong Zing All Stars.
Saturday 10th December | 8pm | £17 Seated, £15 Standing
Hailing from the Democratic Republic Of Congo, the Zong Zing All Stars
describe their music as ‘perfect’ for a sunny day at a festival. Infectious
and energetic, their soukous music is a blend of vocal harmonies, guitar
picking, and dynamic rhythms.
RICHARD DURRANT
CANDLELIT CHRISTMAS
CONCERT
This nine-piece are as much about the dancing as the music, and between
them have a wealth of stage experience having played with the likes of the
Orchestra Virunga of Samba Mapangala and OK Jazz of Franco Makiadi.
In recent years the Zong Zing Allstars have modernised their take on
soukous music, blending it with the rhythms and innovation of ‘New Africa’
and making their style unique and easy to dance to.
This evening promises to take you on a wonderful musical journey across
Africa, and remember to bring your best dancing shoes.
Delicious Afro-Caribbean food will also be on sale from Brighton’s very own
Cummin Up chefs. Limited seating.

BOXING DAY JAZZ BREAKFAST
WITH MIKE HATCHARD
THE TREASON SHOW: THAT WAS THE
YEAR THAT WAS 2016
Something of a tradition at Ropetackle, Mike Hatchard presents his hugely
popular Boxing Day extravaganza – the perfect antidote to too much figgy
pudding, mulled wine, and Slade on repeat! And who better to provide
such a show than the wonderful Charlotte Glasson, everybody’s favourite
multi-instrumentalist. Charlotte is so blessed with natural rhythm she
could make a salt-cellar sound funky. Give her a flute and she positively
roars, give her a sax and she purrs. Don’t miss this seasonal jazzy gift. It’s
like Christmas all over again.
“The savagery of HIGNFY mixed saucy acting, nudity and gleeful music,
these floorboard terrorists could give The Thick of It a run for their
money.” ~ Source
Pastries and cakes will be available to purchase.
The Treason Show team’s infamous ‘Best Of’ edition, featuring the best
songs and sketches from a year’s worth of Treason Shows – and what a
year!! The now legendary festive review-of-the-year edition is the ideal
way to see in the New Year, by giving a right royal send off to the crazy
events of 2016 all wrapped up in award winning Mark Brailsford Christmas
package – you have been warned!
