Joachim gathered the young girls of the
neighborhood to form an escort, and he
made them go in front of Mary, carrying
torches. Captivated by the torches, the
young child followed joyfully to the Temple, not once looking back at her parents
nor weeping as she was parted from
them.

FALL GENERAL ASSEMBLY
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2013
A Fall General Assembly will be convened on Sunday, November 10th, following the Divine Liturgy. Parishioners should have received the agenda through the mail.
Our Parish By-Laws require the following for eligibility to participate and vote at this meeting:
A parishioner who wishes to PARTICIPATE IN THE FALL GENERAL ASSEMBLY or any SPECIAL ASSEMBLIES after June 30th must have paid his/her stewardship financial obligation of the previous year and also 75% of the stewardship financial obligation for the current year (P3, C3, Art.
31, Section 3).

The holy Virgin ran toward the Temple, overtaking her attendant maidens and threw herself into the arms of the High
Priest Zacharias, who was waiting for her at the gate of the Temple with the elders. Zacharias blessed her saying, “It is in
you that He has glorified your name in every generation. It is in you that He will reveal the Redemption that He has prepared for His people in the last days.”
Then, Zacharias brought the child into the Holy of Holies—a place where only the High Priest was permitted to enter
once a year on the Day of Atonement. He placed her on the steps of the altar, and the grace of the Lord descended
upon her. She arose and expressed her joy in a dance as wonder seized all who saw this happen.
The Virgin Mary dwelt in the Temple for nine years until, reaching an age for marriage; she was taken from the Temple
by the priests and elders and entrusted to Joseph as the guardian of her virginity.
The Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple signifies her total dedication to God and her readiness for her future
vocation as the Mother of the Incarnate Lord. This is a feast of anticipation. As honor is shown to Mary, the faithful are
called to look forward to the Incarnation of Christ, celebrated in a little more than a month by the Feast of the Nativity
on December 25.
The icon of the feast tells the story of Mary’s entry into the Temple. The High Priest, Zacharias, is in his priestly robes
standing on the step of the Temple. His arms are outstretched, ready to greet and receive the Virgin. Mary is shown as a
small child, standing before Zacharias with her arms reaching up to him.
In some icons the young maidens who served as her escort are depicted standing behind her. Also, we see her parents,
Joachim and Anna, offering their child to God and His divine service.
In the upper center portion of the icon, the Virgin is seated on the steps of the Holy of Holies. An angel is there, attending to the one chosen by God to bring the Savior into the world.

The Feast of the Entrance of the Theotokos is celebrated with the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom which is
conducted on the morning of the Feast and preceded by a Matins (Orthros) service. A Great Vespers is conducted on
the evening before the day of the Feast. Scripture readings for the Feast are the following:
At Vespers: Exodus 40:1-5, 9-10, 16, 34-35 ; I Kings 7:51, 8:1, 3-4, 6-7, 9-11 ; Ezekiel 43:27—44:4 .
At the Matins: Luke 1:39-49, 56 .
At the Divine Liturgy: Hebrews 9:1-7 ; Luke 10:38-42; 11:27-28.
HYMNS OF THE FEAST:
Apolytikion (Fourth Tone): Today is the prelude of God’s good will and the heralding of the salvation of mankind. In
the temple of God, the Virgin is presented openly, and she proclaimeth Christ unto all. To her, then, with a great voice
let us cry aloud: Rejoice, O thou fulfillment of the Creator’s dispensation.
Kontakion (Fourth Tone): The sacred treasury of God’s holy glory, the greatly precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the
Saviour’s most pure temple, free of stain and undefiled, into the House of the Lord on this day is brought forward and
bringeth with herself the grace of the Most Divine Spirit; her do God’s Angels hymn with songs of praise, for is truly the
heavenly tabernacle.

The "Greek Team" Thanks You, Again
For twelve years, the Greek Team has participated in The Walk to End Alzheimer's and accepted donations from our generous parishioners
and our sponsor, the Ladies Philoptochos Society.
The Walk is the Alzheimer's Association's largest,
and most successful fund raiser. This year it was
held on Saturday, October 5 with thousands of
walkers from the Greater Cincinnati area joining
in. The annual event not only raises awareness
for the disease, it raises money to support programs and services provided by the Alzheimer's
Association and helps fund Alzheimer's Disease
research efforts. The Greek Team had some very
enthusiastic members including eleven people
and five dogs, who all enjoyed the three and a
half mile walk along the Ohio River on a warm
October morning. Thank you to everyone who donated to The Alzheimer's Association and to those who walked on the
team. A special thank you goes to Debi Sylvester and Georgianne Gaz, Philoptochos president, for taking over the team captain's duties this year.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
The Metropolis of Detroit Friends Program is a vital part of the Metropolis ministries. This program assists to enhance scholarships for our seminarians, provides for development of clergy seminars as well as to fund expenses
of the Metropolis office.
If you are not a part of the Friends program, I ask you to consider making a pledge to the Metropolis of Detroit
Friends Program to ensure our Metropolis continues to be a leader within the Archdiocese. We would like the Cincinnati community to be amongst the stewards of this program. If you have already become a “Friend” of the Metropolis, I thank you for your continued support.
We thank you in advance for your support to assist the Metropolis of Detroit.

Parish Council President's Message
by Peter J. Kambelos, MD
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Fall is fully upon us and with that comes the time of year when our membership seeks to nominate potential
new Parish Councilors.
Six potential Council opportunities exist this Fall and it is my hope that we will have more parishioners than that express interest in
serving. I have personally approached many of you, with some promising feedback.
YOUR Parish Council needs 'new blood' to help perpetuate the missions and growth of our beloved community. We are fortunate
that our parish has become more diverse and inclusive over the last several years, a trend that I would like to see continue. In order to facilitate that, we need Council representation from all parishioner backgrounds.
Service on Council is not without measureable time and effort commitments, but the reward of great personal satisfaction that
comes with the knowledge that you have helped guide the prosperity of our community is truly priceless.
Anyone with an interest in participating in this Fall's Parish Council election is asked to contact me or any other Councilor. Final
nominations will be made at the Fall General Assembly Meeting on November 10th, following the Divine Liturgy.
On a personal note, it has been my distinct and sincere pleasure to serve on Council these last four years and I am hopeful to have
the opportunity to serve the community in which I grew-up, again, in the future in a similar capacity.
Sincerely,
Peter J. Kambelos, M.D., F.A.C.P.
Thanksgiving & Christmas Outreach: Helping Our Neighbors
We have already begun to collect food for our holiday outreach programs. We only have a few
weeks until Thanksgiving and much help is needed to insure meals for our neighbors. We currently have over 140 families signed up for meals. We will need to fill our freezer with turkeys
to make sure we do not run out of food. Below is the list of food items needed for the dinner
packages that we will be assembling for Thanksgiving. A revised Christmas list will appear in the
December Voice. We need EVERYONE’S help to achieve this ambitious and necessary ministry.
200 turkeys (14-15 lbs.)
200 boxes of mashed potatoes
200 boxes of stuffing
200 cans of yams (15 oz.)
200 cans of cranberry sauce (15 oz.)
200 cans of fruit (15 oz.)
200 cans of vegetables (15 oz.)
200 boxes of corn or other type of bread
200 frozen (cooked) pumpkin pies
Thank you to all of the individuals that have given so generously to make this ministry possible!

What is a Parish Council?
A Parish Council is the administrative body of a Church community elected by its stewards for the purpose of working together with the Parish Priest or Proistamenos in fulfilling the mission and goals of that particular community.
This brief description of the local governing body of a Parish also explains a fundamental aspect of the structure of the Orthodox Church. Both clergy and laity are the “People of God,” who seek by the grace of the Holy Spirit to fulfill the mission
entrusted to them to live and proclaim the Holy Gospel and the Holy Tradition of the Orthodox Church.
Historically, clergy and laity have worked together in dealing with matters of the Church’s life. The Parish Council is an example of the synergy of clergy and laity; it is a vehicle for implementing the ongoing mission of the Church and planning
the necessary strategies, policies, procedures, and activities that will enable the Parish to move forward in accomplishing
God’s work.
Christ-Centered Servant Leadership
Parish Council members serve as role models for parishioners and must take their ministry very seriously. They should lead
by example by attending Church and parish events, and regularly participating in the sacramental life of the Church. By
doing so, they will have a powerful effect on the overall life of the community. If Parish Council members treat everyone
with love and respect, as Christ loves us, then parishioners will do likewise.
The Council members must practice servant leadership by identifying and examining the ministry needs of the parishioners
and taking the necessary steps to meet those needs, whether through the improvement and expansion of existing ministries or through the creation of new ones.
Responsibilities and Roles
The most important responsibility of the Parish Council is to assist the Parish Priest in the administration of the ministries
of the Parish (GOAA Regulations 29:1A). Some of the principal roles employed by effective Parish Councils include, but are
not limited to, planning, developing, organizing, and implementing stewardship programs and various educational ministries of the Church; reporting and communicating to the parishioners the work and ministries of the Church at the Metropolis and Archdiocesan levels; and recruiting and training others for further service. The Parish Council must also abide
by Local, State, and Federal statutes applicable to the Parish and by the GOAA Regulations.
In all things, Council members should imitate our Lord Jesus Christ, who “came not to be served but to serve” (Matthew
20:28). The entire focus of the Parish Council must be to serve the needs of the faithful and to spread the Gospel of our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
On November 10th at our Fall General Assembly, our parishioners will nominate potential candidates for election to our
Parish Council. We need to find parishioners who are willing to take on all of the responsibilities listed here. We need at
least 6 nominees to run for the Parish Council. Please consider taking on an active role in the ministries and leadership
of our Parish. Contact any member of the Clergy or Parish Council if you are interested.

Roof Repair Update
The roof work on the Sunday Church School building is complete. The second stage of the repair project has begun. We
need approximately $160,000 to complete the project and the 2nd stage is about 75% of the cost. As of October 23rd, we
have received $20,490 in donations from 61 families. This is 13% of the total needed to complete these repairs. We urgently need your help in order to avoid borrowing money to pay this project. At this time in the life of our Parish, stewardship does not cover our daily expenses. Funding for these unexpected repairs and capital improvements must be raised
through your generosity. Thank you to the parishioners who have already responded and to the ones who are planning to
assist with our efforts.

CHURCH ORGANIZATIONS
OVER FIFTY CLUB…Ann Jonson
We are truly sad that Father Paul, Presvytera Lavinia and Nektarios are leaving. We wish them the very best and hope, some
day, that they will come and visit with us. Good luck!
Congratulations to Pat J. Zaferes and Pat P. Zaferes on being
honored at the Clergy-Laity/Philoptochos dinner.
We had a great time at P. F. Chang Restaurant in September.
We had 38 who enjoyed it very much. They all want to go back
again next year.
Our Thanksgiving luncheon will be on November 16, at Church,
with R & R Catering.
Happy Veteran’s Day
&
Happy Thanksgiving!
SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL…Cara Chryssovergis
SCS is always looking to improve its programs and provide the
education that the parish seeks. To that end, SCS is introducing,
"Living the Orthodox Life"-- A Class for ADULTS. The purpose
will be to refresh understanding of Orthodox essentials and explore the Orthodox faith with respect to life. This class is NOT
meant to take the place of the detailed instruction given in Orthodoxy 101. Class instruction will begin directly following Holy
Communion and go until noon; class will meet in the first classroom on the ground floor of the SCS wing. The first class will
take place on October 27. Orthodox Life will follow the same
schedule as the rest of SCS. Adults of any age are welcome.
Our Nativity Program is scheduled for December 15, 2013. It is
time to fill the cast. There are four speaking parts available:
Mary, Archangel Gabriel, Isaiah, and Innkeeper. Non-speaking
parts include: Elizabeth, Joseph, Shepherds, Wise Men, Angels,
and the Star. Contact the director if your child is interested in
participating. Practices will begin at the beginning of November.
We are in desperate need of assistant teachers or parent helpers for Pre-School, and grades 6, 7, and 8. If you love kids and
your Orthodox faith, we need you! Please consider this opportunity to serve your parish and make our SCS program exceptional.
Our Church School has classes for ages 3 years old and up. SCS
classes begin each Sunday with the Divine Liturgy at 9:30 am.
The first eight pews on the left side of the Nave are reserved for
Sunday Church School. Classes begin directly following the distribution of Holy Communion. Classes end at 11:45 am. One of
the best ways for a child to build a foundation as an Orthodox
Christian is to attend Divine Liturgy and Church School on a
regular basis. Our SCS program is offered free of charge thanks
to your generous Stewardship donations.
Last year SCS converted to an all electronic registration system.
Because of the medical authorization form ALL STUDENTS must
be registered electronically every year. A link to the registration
form is available on the Church website. Please register your
children, if you have not already done so. To contact the Director: call 513-226-2746 or email [email protected].
PHILOPTOCHOS…Georgianne Gaz
The Ladies Philoptochos Society continues to have a very active
Fall Schedule.
The Metropolis of Detroit Clergy-Laity Conference was held at
the Covington Marriott Hotel from September 26th to 28th;
Elaine Snyder and Georgianne Gaz attended representing our
chapter as well as Eleni Zaferes on the Metropolis Board. The
refreshments prepared by our members were most appreciated
by the attendees. The Grand Banquet held on September 26,
was attended by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios as well as
His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas. Our honored members
were Pat P. Zaferes and Pat J. Zaferes.
The Greek Team had a perfect morning to participate in The
Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, October 5. In addition to
the Greek Team human members, we were joined by 5 dogs as
well. Humans and dogs alike enjoyed walking to support the
research for this devastating disease.
Baking for Sweet Treats began Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at
10am in the Church kitchen and will continue every Tuesday
through November 19. There has been an enthusiastic turn out
and we would like to say “thank you” to all of the lovely ladies
that came and assisted. We will be baking Tiropita and Spanakopita on Sunday, October 27, after Church. We welcome all
interested ladies, young girls and Yiayias to assist us with their
phyllo skills. Bring a change of clothes, an apron and join the
fun!
Sunday, November 3, we celebrate Sts. Damian and Cosmas;
and Philoptochos will be passing a tray for the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The Outreach Sunday Chili Cook Off has been rescheduled for Sunday, January 19, 2014.

THE VOICE
In order to allow our members to attend the Fall General Assembly Meeting taking place after services on November 10, the
Philoptochos November Meeting has been changed to Sunday,
November 3. The community will be having a luncheon for Father, Presvytera and Nektarios Truebenbach, so our meeting
will take place immediately following the luncheon.
Philoptochos will be celebrating Veterans Day on Sunday, November 10, by honoring Active Duty Military and living or deceased United States Veterans. Please see our members in the
hall where you can submit the names and military branch of
family and friends to be honored. If you have photos in uniform, please bring a copy as well.
The Philoptochos Christmas Dinner will take place from 6:30 to
9:00 pm on Tuesday, December 3, at Pappadeaux Restaurant in
Springdale. If you have not already made your reservations for
the Christmas Dinner, please do so at the November meeting.
Philoptochos will be collecting “Coats and Quilts” for the needy
and distributing them through the City Gospel Mission here in
Cincinnati.
In support of the National Philoptochos Literacy Program, we
are offering a childrens’ book series for sale. The series for
young children is by Greek American author, Nick Katsoris, and
the main character is a little lamb called “Loukoumi”. Please
come see the Philoptochos table to look at these books…they
would make a wonderful Christmas gift for a young child or
grandchild.
DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE…Karen Aamodt
The Daughters of Penelope would like to thank everyone who
supported our Wine Tasting event on October 12th. We are
now able to continue funding a scholarship through the Buckeye Scholarship Foundation. Special thanks go out to Mr. Lewis
November 2013
Parsenios who was our guest at our October 22nd meeting. He
gave a lovely and inspiring presentation on Oxi Day. Lew, thank
you so much!!
Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, November 23, beginning with lunch at 1:00 PM in the small hall. The officers of
our District #11 Lodge will be visiting, so all members should
plan to attend. We have a new community service project for
2013. Bethany House is a shelter for families escaping domestic violence. We are selling Sock Monkey kits to make these
adorable stuffed toys for the children at Bethany House for
Christmas. For some of these children this may be the only toy
they will receive. We, in our Church community, are so very
blessed; and those blessings come from God. Please join us as
we create joy for these children. Making Sock Monkeys for
other children would be an invaluable opportunity for our children to learn more about self-sacrifice and giving to others who
are less fortunate. No artistic talent or skill is needed, so make
it a family activity. It will be more fun than a barrel of monkeys!
Our District #11 is hosting a Festival of Trees to be held on Saturday, December 7, at the Presidential Banquet Center in Kettering, Ohio. This is very similar to the Festival of Tables/
Flowers concept, but this time we will decorate tabletop Christmas trees. This will be an entertaining and beautiful
event. Donation for lunch and program is $25.00. See our contact information below to RSVP. Proceeds from this event
benefit breast cancer research.
If you would like to join our organization or have questions regarding our community service projects, please contact President Karen Aamodt at [email protected] or 513-582-7263
OR Vice President Michelle Sutherland at panagiotopoulosm@
yahoo.com or 859-444-0933.
Thank You
Fr. Paul!

November 2013
“The rich man is not the one who has much, but one who gives much.
For what he gives away remains his forever.”
St. John Chrysostom
This is the time of year when the Parish Council formulates the annual budget to be presented at
the fall General Assembly meeting. It is also the time of year when our Stewardship Campaign
gets underway. Stewardship is an essential ingredient in meeting the expenses of our Parish. 2014
will be no different than 2013, in that there are several ministries here that will be accomplished
only because your prayerfully directed contributions, whether of time, talent or treasure.
Stewardship campaigns naturally focus on the giver because generous stewardship is an appropriate, thankful response to God’s blessings, but the receivers of stewardship are blessed too by the
gift. Who are the receivers of your stewardship contributions? – All of us in this faith community.
We are all blessed by the transformation of dollars into ministries that touch our lives directly in
various ways, assist the community around us and strengthen the Church at large.
Is this any different than what happens when we are gathered around the Lord’s table each Sunday, when our sacrifice of praise is blessed with the gift of the Eucharist in return? Just as both
parts are blessed and valued, so are all members in our community, whether as stewards or as
beneficiaries of our many Parish ministries.
Ideally we are both stewards and beneficiaries of the outpouring of generous giving. Therefore
please reflect on your current stewardship pledge, not only in terms of how much you will give,
but also in how many ways you will be blessed in return.
