Mission Statement:
Created in God’s image, we are the people of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Parish. In communion
with the Roman Catholic Church and the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, we dedicate ourselves to living the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. Guided by the Holy Spirit; nourished by the Sacraments; and under the Patronage
of Our Lady of the Assumption; we strive to use our varied gifts and rich heritage to build the Body of
Christ Through worship, prayer, education, and service to all.

The value of persistent prayer is not that God will

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Today, we know more about the beginnings of Lent than our
ancestors did. We know that Lent is first of all about baptism, and secondly that it is about the desire of all the
baptized to renew the power and potential of that sacrament at Easter. For centuries, this deep truth was
largely obscured, but today documents have come to light to reshape the Church’s thinking and practice.
One source, discovered in the 1880s, is the pilgrim diary of a Spanish nun, Egeria, writing her sisters a
detailed travelogue of a fourth-century sojourn in Jerusalem during Holy Week. She describes in vivid detail
her participation in liturgies that are close cousins of our own Holy Week prayer, from a festive procession
with palms to a procession to the cross. Her greatest delight is in the huge number of elect: men, women, and
children who experience a time of deep retreat and identification with Christ’s cross, guided by the bishop and
supported by their godparents’ constant nurture. The discovery of Egeria’s diary proved to be a moment of
grace for the Church; after a long period of “ecclesial amnesia,” we know at last that baptism is really the work
of a whole community of faith, convened by God. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PARISH MINISTRIES
Outreach & Catechetical
OLA’S GOOD SHEPHERD MINISTRY
Our Lady of the Assumption’s “Casserole Cooking”
ministry provides good, hot meals to our community’s
homeless and hungry men, women and children of our
city. The Good Shepherd Center staff has provided
our parish the recipes and covered containers. All we
have to do is follow a recipe, make a casserole, freeze
it, and return it to the parish office.
Come to the Parish office during regular business
hours to pick up recipes and an aluminum casserole
pan, take them home and make the meal of your
choice; then return the completed casserole frozen,
labeled and dated to the parish office.
For more information, please contact the Parish
office at 256-9818. OLA’s Casserole Cooking is a
simple way to give of your time, talent and treasure.
Your generosity will make the difference in feeding our
city’s poor, homeless and hungry.

Renewing Parish Life
The Archdiocesan program,
Living the Eucharist, is a renewal
experience that fosters spiritual
growth and discipleship by
promoting full, conscious, and
active participation in the
Eucharist. Parishioners participate in small groups
once a week, reading a Lenten reflection booklet
which prepares them for the upcoming week’s Sunday
readings. The groups began the week of Ash
Wednesday and continue until Holy Week. Groups are
held on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings
at 7:00pm and on Wednesday mornings at 10:00am in
the Parish Office.
BLANKETS & BOOTIES

joining us and think of it as “Fellowship for Others”.
Any and all participation is welcomed.

from 9:00am - 11:45am in the Merrifield room at the
Parish Office. Blankets are given to the Albuq., Police
Department. Booties are given to Birthright of NM. As
the cold weather is approaching we are in need of
monetary donations or new yarn to continue this
ministry. For more information contact the parish
office.

SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
As Lent has started we need to focus on our
desire for a fresh encounter with the living God, as
we begin to examine our conscience and ask
ourselves, “Where are my roadblocks?” The
Sacrament of Penance is a wonderful opportunity to
get past those roadblocks and experience
forgiveness, joy, and peace. OLA will offer a
communal celebration of reconciliation on April 3rd
or individual confessions on Saturday from 3:30 4:30 pm or by appointment during office hours.
The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ - the
Paschal Mystery - is the foundation of reconciliation.
There’s no better time to celebrate this sacrament
than when we are getting ready for Easter.

THE WAY OUT
Today’s readings launch us into Lent with the
story of salvation. How did we humans get where
we are? How do we get out? Genesis—through the
Adam and Eve narrative—explains that we got
separated from God and happiness through greed,
selfishness, arrogance.
But, as Paul explained to the Romans, God has
not abandoned us, and never will. We get out
through the “new Adam,” Jesus Christ, through
whom the death of sin is conquered by the life of
“overflowing grace.”
From the start, though, Jesus—like Adam and
Eve, like you and me—had to face “the tempter.”
Shown fame and wealth, he was tempted to grab
for it. But Jesus saw through such foolishness.
During Lent we will look at what the tempter
spreads before us daily, then try to make choices
that put us on the side of the angels.
HAPPINESS
Happiness is a mystery, like religion, and should
never be rationalized.
~G.K. Chesterton~
