The School
Vinod Gupta School of Management, established in 1993, was
the first school of management to be setup within the IIT
system. It was initiated by a distinguished alumnus and a lifetime
fellow of the Institute, Mr. Vinod Gupta.

VGSOM synergizes the latest management
education while
leveraging
the
technical
competence of IIT Kharagpur. The founders of IIT
Kharagpur felt the need to utilize competencies
and resources possessed by the institute to impart
superior quality of management education. VGSOM
has contributed significantly towards management
education in India over the last two decades. The
school offers both full-time MBA as well as a special
EMBA program for working executives. Apart from
these, VGSOM runs one of the largest doctoral
programs and conducts MDPs which are short
duration programs for practicing managers in
various functional areas.

The MBA Program
The flagship program of the School leads to the degree of Master of Business
Administration from IIT Kharagpur. This is a full-time four-semester (2 year) residential program
for graduate engineers and Masters' degree holders in science, economics and commerce,
intending to pursue management careers in India or abroad. The MBA curriculum has evolved
to be among the best in the country combining the traditional strengths of IIT in technical
education with modern management philosophy. Teaching techniques include a judicious mix
of lectures, case-studies, group projects and workshops. A two-month summer internship in
industry exposes students to practical management problems. The core of the program
includes compulsory courses in Human Resource Management, Production & Operations,
Marketing, Finance, Information Systems Management, Organizational Behavior, Economics,
Strategic Management, Legal Aspects of Business, Business Ethics, Quantitative Methods and
Business Communication. A large number of electives from across several IIT departments
are available for a student to pursue his/her individual interests in greater depth. In addition,
all peripheral administrative functions in the school are managed by students in team mode
to inculcate team orientation in them.

The EMBA Program
Over the years the school has moved beyond the sphere of regular MBA program. The school
has two programs for working executives - EMBA at the Kolkata and Bhubaneswar campuses
which leads to the degree of Master of Business Administration from IIT Kharagpur. With the
ever increasing pace of knowledge creation and knowledge obsolescence, a professional can
no longer presume to be a high achiever over his entire career banking upon his initial
professional qualification. There is growing need for part-time and executive MBA Programs
that is recognized worldwide.
The 3 Years EMBA program enables working executives to upgrade their managerial knowledge
and skills while continuing to be employed. The rigorous fully classroom based program is
held during weekends. The participants bring in their wide experiences into the classroom
and work on regular individual and group projects. Throughout the program, the participants
practice the concepts learnt in classroom at their workplace. This parallel learning and
implementation process is very fundamental to this program.
The 12 trimester program has been conceived benchmarking similar offerings by leading B
Schools in India and the world, for content, mode of delivery, curricula design and course
structure. It consists of a compulsory set of core subjects and a variety of electives - similar
offerings as in the full-time MBA program. An international immersion in a foreign country
exposes the students to a different macroeconomic environment and culture. In the last three
terms, the participants engage themselves in individual projects where they attend a real-life
problem.
MBA Admission Process
VGSOM admits students on the basis of the Common Admission Test (CAT), which is also used
by the IIMs, IITs and other top B- schools in India. However, a candidate must have a first-class
Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology or a first-class Masters' degree in Science (with
Mathematics or Statistics at bachelor's level), Economics or Commerce to be admitted in
VGSOM. Eligible candidates are called for group discussion and personal interview based on
their CAT percentile, academic consistency and quality of work experience. The school selects
students who have the necessary aptitude and the right attitude for a career in management.
A typical batch has enough diversity of gender, disciplines, experience, region and language
so as to contribute diverse perspectives to any discussion which is considered essential in
management learning.

Gopali Youth Welfare Society teaches us just that, how to care about others and to make things better
for them. Gopali Youth Welfare Society is a registered non-governmental voluntary organization primarily
managed by students of IIT Kharagpur, with a mission to improve the living standard of the people of
Gopali, a village 5 km from IIT Kharagpur.
In current times, there is a need for skilled people everywhere including the social sector, to make
better use of resources and to bring better results. Gopali Youth Welfare Society is a live channel which
provides a platform for the young managers to prove themselves as leaders and to help solve the
problems plaguing the weaker sections of the society. GYWS gives the liberty to work on a problem
and expanding the scope of the work to the adoption of a particular region and supporting the region
in its development. Apart from weekend teaching and awareness programs, VGSoM students are
working on drafting a village adoption plan for a village named "Soladhar", to address the primary
issues faced by that village.

We identified the need for better processes which helps corporates make an informed decision while
donating to NGOs. We also identified that the NGOs needed better resources to make a lasting
contribution to society. Hence Sangam was created at IIT Kharagpur as an entity to provide corporates
with decision making processes and NGOs with resources.
The aim is to provide the NGOs with support & encouragement for the services they've been rendering
towards the society and guidance & direction to make better contribution, the corporate with an
opportunity to give something back to the society as part of their CSR activities as well as a chance
to meet people who can be entrusted with the responsibility of carrying out these activities in future
and lastly a hands on experience for budding entrepreneurs of today, who will be the leaders of
tomorrow.

Management Research Projects
The age old saying "an ounce of practice is worth a pound of preaching" still holds true for today's
world, and we at VGSoM are staunch believers of practice oriented education. Hence as part of the
MBA curriculum, the second year students are expected to be involved in Live Projects and Applied
Management Research Project (AMRP).
v AMRP is an eight month long, 8 credit project that gives students the opportunity to apply what
they have learnt in their first year curriculum.
v Live Projects provide the corporates with a chance to delegate their work to the bright and young
minds in the campus. The typical duration of a live project varies from a week to few months
depending on the problem statement.
Students work with the organizations to explore certain challenging management issues and propose
implementable solutions. This type of active and engaged learning inspires students to obtain an in
depth knowledge of their academic subjects and prepares them for the future organizational challenges.

Purvodaya
It all began with a dream, a vision, which few of the brave hearts of VGSOM had
for their college. Days of sweat, storm and antipathy still couldn't undermine
the resolve of these students, and thus was born PURVODAYA. The annual
management festival of VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur was incepted in November, 2012
but the seeds of the brilliant idea of having a single business conclave combining
the best of "MADison Avenue" and "Saamanjasya" the previous events of VGSOM,
were sown much before.
'PURVODAYA', signifying "the Rise of East", added another feather in VGSOM's
cap. As the motto of Purvodaya goes Believe, Rise, Achieve, we truly believed,
we rose to the occasion and yes we achieved, achievement which goes beyond
tangible things and has lot to do in contributing towards building VGSOM, IIT
Kharagpur's brand as a force to reckon with in the years to come.

"If you can dream it, you can do it", said Walt Disney. Similar was the vision
of bringing the best of the lot from the youth on a single platform when we
started our quest by the name of Kshitij in 2004. The budding engineers,
entrepreneurs and management moguls shared the same scope of
opportunity we provided to produce path breaking technological and
business outputs. Kshitij, the Annual Techno-Management festival of IIT
Kharagpur has been leading the light of instilling a culture of science,
technology and innovation among the youth of the nation. With more than
40 events covering all genres of technology and management, Kshitij brings
some of the best solutions for the mankind to the fore. The huge amount
of prize money is just another epitome of the heights we have scaled in the
last eight years. VGSOM takes pride in being associated with ASIA's largest
techno-managerial fest and plays a pivotal role in its success by organizing
several business events.
Spring Fest
In its history of over 50 years, IIT Kharagpur has seen many
students come and go, but the one thing that most strongly
connects us all is Spring Fest, the annual social and cultural
festival of IIT Kharagpur. With an average footfall of more
than 50,000 students from all over the country, Spring Fest
is marked by days of absolute ecstasy, fun-filled events and
socio-cultural interactions between students from different
disciplines and backgrounds. Providing budding artists a
competing platform in fields as diverse as music, dance,
theater, photography, literature, fine arts, quizzing and
debating, Spring Fest has become a natural symbol of
celebration of the spirit of youth.
VPL - VGSOM Premiere League
VGSOM Premier League (VPL) - a cricketing league based on the famous IPL was
unveiled in 2011. VPL has ensured massive participation by students in the roles
of team managements for franchisees and as players. The "Auction Hour" was
conducted where virtual bidding was conducted among the franchisees for the
players. The league matches between the various teams are under process and
VPL has for once and for all transformed the sporting culture at VGSOM. Sports
Committee also gave an opportunity to all students to be a part of VPL by
introducing the Super Selector fantasy game as well.

VGSOM boasts of a strong student community and almost all the important activities
that are essential for a management institute are student driven, here at VGSOM.
VGSOM has 9 functional committees taking care of various processes like
placements, admission, alumni relation etc. and 8 different focus clubs, each
cultivating different facets of managerial domains.
The Committees are listed as follows:
v Placement Committee - In charge of all placement related activities at VGSOM.
Also responsible for publishing the annual summer and final placement report
(VANTAGE).
v Alumni Committee - In charge of maintaining alumni relationships,
publishing the annual alumni newsletter - SCUZZY and organizing the annual
alumni meet - CONNECT.
v Admissions Committee - In charge of co-coordinating the whole admissions
process and facilitating aspirants and new entrants.
v Corporate & Media Interaction Cell - In charge for all types of communications
with the media and corporate world. It is also responsible for arranging and
coordinating guest lectures by industry stalwarts.
v Sports Committee - In charge of arranging various sports and recreational
activities for the students of VGSOM.
v Cultural Committee - In charge of managing all the cultural events at VGSOM.
Is also responsible for organizing fresher's party and farewell for incoming
and outgoing batches respectively.
v Saamanjasya - In charge of designing and organizing the annual event
Saamanjasya.
v SpringFest and Kshitij Committee - In charge of designing and managing
events during the annual SpringFest and during the techno-managerial fest
Kshitij.

Prof. Teltumbde has worked for more than 35 years in Oil
Industry encompassing entire value chain. He has headed
many functions such as Corporate Planning, Engineering and
Projects, Supply & Distribution and Information Systems and
many new strategic initiatives. He pioneered many innovative
systems and was awarded numerous awards for spreading IT
in the country. He also worked on various industry committees
and was a member of the first Study Group for deregulation
of Oil Industry in 1994-1995. He also worked as Managing
Director, National Oil & Chemical Company (NOLCHEM), Lagos
(Nigeria) for post privatization turnaround and Consultantcum-Project Manager, Kenya Pipeline Company, Nairobi (Kenya)
and also as consultant with CNPC, China. He had been teaching
as a guest/visiting faculty to various business schools in
Mumbai and IIM, Ahmedabad over the last 25 years and has
published 25 research papers. Before joining VGSOM, he was
Managing Director of Petronet India Limited, Mumbai and
Director on Board of a few other companies.
Prof. Mukhopadhyay, First Class First in M.Sc., winner of the
Young Scientist Award and Search of Excellence Award, has
several papers in national and international journals to her
credit. Her research interests include Organizational Health,
Women Studies, Consumer Behaviour, Infrastructure
management, Quantitative Techniques and Microfinance.
She is a Fellow at Microfinance Research Alliance Program,
Centre for Microfinance, Institute of Financial Management &
Research, Chennai.
Sujoy Bhattacharya has nine years of Teaching and Research
experience. He has taught at Mudra Institute of
Communications, Ahmedabad, Goa Institute of Management,

University and IIT Roorkee. She has also served as

Dr. Arun Kumar Misra's teaching and research activities relate

Investment Banking. Before joining VGSOM, he was working
as Senior Manager in a leading public sector bank. As a
professional Banker, Dr. Misra has extensive experience in the
areas of Capital Market, Risk Management, Basel-II
Implementation in Banks, Assets - Liabilities Management and
Profit and Profitability Management in banks. He has several
publications primarily in the areas of financial markets
integration and risk management. He is an associate fellow of
Indian Institute of Bankers.
She has joined VGSOM as a full time faculty since January
2012. She had worked with Tata Steel Jamshedpur as a manager

Dr. Aradhna Malik has been working with VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur,
as an Assistant Professor since July 2008. She has about 14
years of experience in a diversity of roles and organizations
in India and abroad. Dr. Malik has been trained in grant-writing
from the Grants Institute, USA. Her work includes research on
developmental communication, management of social welfare
organizations, competence in intercultural communication,
and the social impact of technology. Dr. Malik is currently
serving as the Associate Copy Editor of Asian English as a
Foreign Language (AEFL) Journal.
Prof. K.B.L. Srivastava has more than 18 years of teaching,
research and training experience. He has taught earlier at
BITS Pilani, and T.A. Pai Management Institute, Manipal, and
also served as visiting faculty at XLRI Jamshedpur (2002), and
Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok (2005). He has
published more than 40 papers in national and international
journals and contributed 20chapters in edited books. He has
supervised 7 Ph.D. theses in the area of Human Resource
Development , Knowledge Management , HR issues in
Mergers/Acquisitions, Emotional Intelligence and
organizational culture. He has conducted management
development programs in areas of behavioural/soft skills and

and co-ordinated more than 15 training programmes.
Dr. Barnali Nag holds a Ph.D. from IGIDR, Mumbai, an advanced
Research Institute by the Reserve Bank of India; and a
postgraduate degree in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru
University, New Delhi. She did her post-doctoral research from
Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania. Prior to
that, she was a Business Research Fellow at the Indian School
of Business, Hyderabad. Dr. Nag has also worked in RIS, New
Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs, GoI, an advance Institute for
actionable research. Before joining IIM Kashipur, she was a
faculty in Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur.Dr.
Nag has published in various referred international journals

Dept. of Psychology, Allahabad University, PhD IIT Delhi)
An industrial psychologist by training, a Chancellor medalist,
she is also the recipient of Jung Tae-gon Young Scholar Award
2011, for Best Doctoral Dissertation, by the Asian Association
of Social Psychology, at Kunming, China. Presently, she is India
Partner to the International HR Climates Project, funded by
SSHRC, Govt. of Canada. Her interest areas include emotions
in organizations, consumer psychology, and psychological
and HR issues at workplace. She has published papers in
journals and conferences, both national and international.
Dr. Abhijeet Chandra is an Assistant Professor in Finance and
Accounting area at the Vinod Gupta School of Management
of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (West Bengal,
India). Earlier between July 2012 and October 2014, he was
Post-doctoral Fellow (Postdoc) in finance working with Prof.
M. Thenmozhi at the Department of Management Studiesof
the Indian Institute of Technology Madras at Chennai, India.In
November 2011,he received his Ph.D. on Behavioral Finance
from the Department of Commerce & Business Studies of
Jamia Millia Islamia (Central University), New Delhi, India working
with his advisor Dr. Ravinder Kumar. From July 2010 - June
2012, he was working as Academic Associate in Finance and
Control Area at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore,
Karnataka. Prior to and during the doctoral studies, he earned
his degrees in Accounting, Commerce, and Business
Management with major in Finance.
Dr. Srabanti Mukherjee has a rich experience in teaching in
premiere educational institutions of the country [including IIM
Indore, Visva Bharti, Shantiniketan; Bengal Engineering and
Science University Shibpur, Indian Institute of Social Welfare
and Business Management, Kolkata (the first B school in
India].She has obtained her Ph.D from Indian Institute of
Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur. She has a special
interest in research on Health Care and Bottom-of-the-pyramid
marketing.
She has published cases in the Richard Ivey school of Business
Publishing. The cases are co-distributed through Harvard
Business School Publishing.
She has authored a book titled "Consumer Behaviour" which
has been published by Cengage Learning India Pvt. Ltd. She
has published a number of research papers and articles in
national and international refereed journals.

How to reach IIT Kharagpur
Situated about 120 km west of Kolkata, Kharagpur can be reached in about 2 hours
by train from Howrah railway station (Kolkata) or 3 hours by car from Kolkata Airport.
Kharagpur is also connected by direct train services to most major cities of the country.
The Institute is about 10 minutes' drive (5 km) from the Kharagpur railway station.
