CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
By Kimberly Bordonaro, ProStyle Image
A
pril is my favorite month of the year. The crisp air
brings a sense of vibrancy and inspiration after the cold
winter months –a perfect time to apply those feelings to your
business. It is also the time of year that we express gratitude to
our employees. The Chamber has set a wonderful venue for you
to showcase your valued employees and publicly thank them for
their service during “The Golden Lasso Employee Appreciation
Luncheon” on April 22nd.
“Gratitude is the memory of the heart.” – French Proverb.
A simple thank you can go a long way in keeping your employees happy and productive in the workplace. In addition to
publicly thanking your employees during our April Luncheon, I encourage you to be creative
in finding extra ways to express your gratitude by simply opening your Chamber directory.
Some ideas I came up with include:
• Milk and Cookies (or cupcakes) Party – Calabasas has some of the best bakeries
around! Why not take a break with a nostalgic treat?
• A Free Lunch – Who says there are no free lunches? Award employees who go above
and beyond with a gift certificate to their favorite local restaurant.
• Bowling Night – An entertaining spin on the staff party. Host your own annual bowling party and encourage team spirit. It’s also a great way to get your practice in before
the Chamber’s Annual Bowling Tournament coming your way in August!
• Annual Employee Appreciation Award – Have a special award or plaque made
to honor those that help your company shine. Be sure to include showcase it where
your costumers can also admire it.
• This Bud’s for You – Flowers are a beautiful way to express gratitude. Work with
one of our Chamber’s florists to create a “bouquet of the month” and honor a different
employee monthly.
Of course there are many other creative ideas out there and we would love to hear the
unique you express gratitude through the services of other members. Many members offer
Chamber discounts, so be sure to ask and let them know you are member as well. And don’t
forget to fill out a “Remember-a-Member” card to enter in our monthly prize drawing – simply for demonstrating your loyalty to Always Buy Chamber.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
By Martin Seda, Economic & Governmental Affairs Committee Chair
Our March meeting began with the Chair reporting that the Chamber Board had voted
to approve the Committee’s recommendation to support the League of California Cities’ Initiative for qualification on the November ballot. The purpose of the initiative is to protect
municipal revenue sources by prohibiting the State from taking funds used for transportation or local government projects and services.
Our public representatives discussed a number of key points affecting their jurisdictions and stakeholders:
1. Water Conservation – Jeff Reinhardt, from the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD), updated us on a number of developments:
• The State Department of Water Resources provided of slight increase to the water
supply that Southern California could receive from the Delta this year. Earlier
projections were significantly lower than the amount we received last year and
continue to trail last year despite this recent revision. Key water storage facilities,
like Lake Oroville, are still below where they should be for this time of year; water
budgeting and conversation should continue.

Legislative Update
Continued from page 2
• The local Sherriff’s Station opened an Unused and Expired
Drug Collection Point. The effort will help protect the quality
of our water by keeping these drugs from contaminating our
water resources. Common practice by many has been to flush
drugs down toilets as a means of disposal.
• District sponsored water conservation classes continue to be
well attended particularly those on arid landscaping.
• The LVMWD board will be considering its position on the Water Bond Initiative at their next meeting.
2. County Update – Timothy Pershing, representing County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, discussed the following issues:
• The California Budget remains a concern due to its potential
impact on the county, specifically in those areas dependent on
transfer payments from the state.
• An outside consultant will begin reviewing the situation at the
County Probation Department due to alleged abuses by employees.
• The Sherriff’s Department will have funding to continue the
Operation Safe Canyon Program. New officers in the Highway
Patrol have been assigned to our district. Rumble strips will
start to be placed on canyon roads after repaving projects have
been completed.
The Committee’s next meeting is scheduled for April 5th at Fins
Creekside Restaurant at 12 noon. Please join us to learn about the
issues that affect your business community.

The City of Calabasas welcomed a delegaton from its Sister City in
Anqing, China in March. Anqing has been a sister city to Calabasas
for nearly 10 years, a partnership that has been enriched through reciprocal visits by students, residents and government officials. Mayor Wolfson and Councilmember Dennis Washburn presented the
Anqing group with a Key to the City before taking a tour of the new
Civic Center. Shown in the picture are Anqing representatives presenting the City with a decorative scroll with a Chinese inscription
about water which reads, “How can it be so clear and cool? For water
comes fresh from its source.” The quote is from a book written by
poet, statesman, philosopher and neo-Confucian Zhu-Li during the
anceint Northern Song Dynasty. The representatives were especially
interested in California and local water issues and green initiatives.
