Director’s Note
I spent my childhood in Kolkatta, surrounded by Auction Houses. The
fascination for these caught up early on. There was such an extensive variety
of collectables, old furniture, interesting artefacts, paintings of great artists
and curios I had never seen before, strange looking lamps, beautiful
chandeliers. I remember seeing works of Jamini Roy auction at as much as a
hundred rupees at the time, It was then; I began to entertain the idea of
opening an auction house one day. I started the auction House Art Bull with
quite a passion and the reasons for leaving are best known to me.
ART DEAL Auction House in its inaugural auction with Amanpreet Singh
as a consultant focuses on Maharashtra (Bombay School). The intention is to
put forth good works of art, they maybe by a master or a young and talented
artist. Has the potential of becoming a major artist in the coming future.
Rather than showcasing poor quality masters’ works. An effort has been put
into handpicking each art work to go under the hammer. This shall bring
some good quality works in the lime light provide the viewer with an
opportunity to obtain selected works of not just masters but also emerging
talents. These artists too shall benefit with wider audiences for their artworks
in this forum at an early stage in their careers and help them get better
visibility. This venture would not have been possible without the support of
all my friends & well wishers.
I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Sunil Kant Munjal for his
invaluable support. I would also like to thank my mentor Mr. Vijay Kumar
Aggarwal for his precious guidance and encouragement over a long period of
time. I am highly obliged to Ms. Priya Paul who has been a strong pillar of
support for over two decades. My grateful thanks go to Christina & Mahesh
Naithani for all their encouragement and continuous support.

been a source of confidence and support. I have furthermore to thank Ms.
Smritee Rajgarhia Bhatt for always extending a helping hand. I also want to
thank Mr. Arjun Pant for his valuable guidance on all the legalities. My
heartiest thanks go to Mr. Vineet Jain for all his help and support.

Gaganendranath Tagore’s landscapes
were inspired by Japanese artist Yokoyama
Taikan. They integrated Japanese style
brush work with subtle play of earthy
colors often with a glowing background.
His works with strong Far Eastern
influences invoke oriental vastness and an
infiniteness of space.
Putting his faith in traditional Indian techniques of
painting, Abanindranath Tagore introduced modern
art in Bengal. His art work inspired a new national
language in art which he created by the modernization
of conventional Indian styles such as the Mughal and
Rajput.

Mukul Dey was a sensitive artist, he was a prominent painter who
specialized in dry-point etching, a European practice but his
subjects remained indigenous. He was extremely fascinated by the
Ajanta Cave Paintings. The artwork is a copy of one of the frescos
on the cave walls that he observed during his visit there. His
experiences were published in My Pilgrimages to Ajanta and Bagh.
“In 1918, I realised a long cherished dream by visiting the Ajanta
Caves. I at once made up my mind to copy the frescos but as I had
no money, I had to travel to various cities of southwestern India
drawing portraits of rich men and selling my work for a few rupees
only.”- Mukul Dey.

Abani Sen was an important Indian modernist painter. His artworks showcase his interest and
indulgence with the beauty of ordinary life, nature and the roots of his native soil. He got
totally involved in the painting he was to make, almost like going into a trance like state, and
then quickly capture in his brush stokes maybe the light falling on a tree…
‘In my painting I try to transfer myself to the things which I paint, may it be the radiant light
or the darkest shadows. I surrender to the speed of running deer or to the calmness, action or
response of the environment. I try to surrender to the objects, whatever they may be, living,
still or moving, and in this attempt I feel the impulse of an eternal joy.’ - Abani Sen

Though he commenced his career as a
landscape painter, Almelkar’s painting style
is ingrained in the folk art tradition. His
depictions were also inspired by the Ajanta
mural style, with forms of folk and rural life
with a contemporary approach. His way of
using fine strokes and vibrant colors strikes
a perfect rhythmic balance in his paintings.
During 1955 he invented his own style by
stimulating his perception, formations and
colors from the mediaeval miniatures.

Toreador-Spanish Bullfighter is
one of his works inspired by the
Bull fights which happens in Spain.
It is an impasto with rich shades of
red. Still life, landscapes, nudes and
icons of Christianity are the most
frequent subjects included in his
gamut of creations.
“For me, the all pervading and
crucial themes of the predicament
of man are those of religion and
sex” stated Souza in an interview in
1964.
Francis Newton Souza’s wild and
graphic style generates thought
provoking and dominant images. He
is known for his extraordinary work
with the nude. His exploration in
that particular subject through his
canvases, allowed him to contribute
varied and extensive work.

A.A Raiba’s style of using the line has always been
subject definite and his use of charcoal to sketch makes
his artwork even more interesting. His works often
portrayed images of female nudes, Christ in angular
shapes and sharp lines. Bold shapes, strong definite
lines, beautiful shades of colors with a difference are the
specialty of Raiba’s paintings. His later series involved
landscapes and portraits of rural folk where his lines
curved vivaciously.

Sivanesan’s artwork is an impression of his personal mood and feeling
at that point of time. His color palette usually includes yellows,
oranges, browns and a bit of greens. The work is inspired by Rajasthan’s
rural scenes. Sivanesan believes that the purpose of a painting is to
relax viewers and this can be achieved better in simple, rural subjects,
which is reflected in both these works one portraying a journey in a
bullock cart and the other a figurative composition of a fisher man.

Keeping his faith in originality, Jagdish Swaminathan got noticed
in the art world during 50’s and 60’s. Known as the ‘Bird Man’,
because of the beauty and simplicity of the popular bird form he

sometimes reduced to symbols, which was an influence of tribal
art on his personal style. He always shared his love for primeval

Laxma’s works are rustic and rural, earlier based
on childhood memories of villagers and later

“The women in my paintings are
sturdy, women you see in your
homes or your neighborhood.
There is no hint of sexuality.
Women and nature are both
symbiotically tied in a circle. I
believe women represent the
latent force, which has not been
explored properly even today.
They can counter the challenges
of industrialization and extreme
urbanization. Inherently, they
have a power to renew and
regenerate.” - Arpana Caur
Arpana’s figurative paintings reveal the strength and power of women
engaged in daily household activities such as daydreaming, typing or sewing.
Portrayal of impactful female figures echoing force and agony wrapped in a
sheet of earlier customs and traditions is the imagery a viewer may witness
on her canvas.

A well-known figurative artist and a Padma Shri, Haku
Shah’s representations come from his firm background in
folk and tribal art. The omnipresence of a blue shepherd
with a flute in his hand along with simplified images of cows
around him reflects his deep relation and involvement with
the tribal art and rural India. The evident flatness of the
pictorial space in Haku Shah’s paintings reflects the
straightforwardness of the rustic life.
Sundaram is a painter who has been steadily
inducing politically edgy paintings inspired by
his motivation towards social and political
consciousness. He is known for working and
experimenting with medium and impressive
installations.

Paresh Maity’s work is known for conventionalized forms, free
spirited use of colors and the harmonization of motion and
tranquility. His landscapes include waterscapes of riverine Bengal
showcasing the river banks along with the quiet contemplative
quality of life in beautiful subdued colors. His use of color palette
in his landscapes included dark indigo, green, ochre and cobalt.
His figurative style plays around with the combination of warm
hues and pulsating colors. Getting inspired by his extensive
travels to Rajasthan he integrated human figures on his canvas
based on people and colors of the region.

Jitish Kallat’s way of painting is very autobiographical as he uses
the self image as the main element in his works. The look of the
artwork is like a worn out wall, showcasing the idea of duality in
his painting. “My art is more like a researcher’s project who uses
quotes rather than an essay, with each painting necessitating a

Anindita, deeply influenced by Mughal miniatures
uses intricate images in patterns that give an illusion
of abstraction demanding a certain intimacy from
the viewer. Multiple layers are used allowing her to
juxtapose various experiences from different time
frames in to the meaning of the composition. The
concluding layer of “Jaalis” is inspired a single matrix.
Keen observation is critical to “view” her work in its
entirety. There is always something new to discover as
one probes further, a form, a metaphor dissolving in
the tender water colour yet significant, with a presence
that always adds by Jharokas /windows that are used to
restrain the viewer’s gaze.

Megha Joshi’s art is a direct showcase of her view point on gender
issues. As she talks about how strongly she lives with a concern
about the issue, she also talks about her artwork titled, ‘Roots and
Wings’:
“My gender is one of the things that define me and sadly it is also one
of the things I want to forget about so many times in a day. Roots
and Wings takes all the dichotomies and dilemmas that women go
through. Everyone who has seen it has their own two words for the
roots and the wings. Identity and carefree-ness, freedom and chains,
tradition and modernity, strength and weakness, acceptance and
denial… are some of the ways people see it,” Megha Joshi.
