THE 10TH EDITION OF THE DANONE NATIONS CUP GIVES KIDS
A CHANCE TO REPRESENT CANADA IN BRAZIL
Toronto, June 2009 – Danone Canada is proud to introduce the members
of the two teams representing Eastern and Western Canada who will compete
for a chance to participate in the 10th edition of the Danone Nations Cup
international finals happening for the first time ever in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The
24 players on the two Canadian teams were handpicked from among 6,000
young people who took part in 10 Danone Nations Cup soccer camps and 4
provincial selection camps across the country. The two teams will compete
against one another at the national finals at Toronto’s BMO Field on June 20,
with the winning team getting a chance to prove their skill against some of
the world’s best young soccer players at the international finals in Sao Paulo.
Taking place from October 9 to 11, the 2009 Danone Nations Cup is a
thrilling conclusion to an immense international event counting close to 3
million soccer players aged 11-12, and is the last component of the largescale philanthropic activity. Since its creation nine years ago, the Danone
Nations Cup has become the most prominent event in international youth
soccer, attracting players from over 40 different countries.
“The Danone Nations Cup is unique in its ability to break down cultural and
social economic barriers and allow kids to share in their common love of the
game,” explains Louis Frenette, President and CEO of Danone Canada. “We
are thrilled to be celebrating the 10th edition of this extraordinary event that
encourages health, fitness, and camaraderie among Canadian youth.”
This year will also kick-off a new tradition whereby two players from the
losing Canadian team demonstrating good sportsmanship and exceptional
skill, will be asked to accompany the winning team to the international finals
in Brazil.
