(NFA) seniors happily queued up in the lobby hallway at Elant
at Fishkill in early June, ready to be acknowledged by their
family, friends and Elant staff for their internship achievements
at a very important ceremony: The Nurse Aide Pin Ceremony
hosted by Elant.
At the ceremony, a time-honored tradition dating back to
the 1960s with Florence Nightingale marking the completion of
the program, students were awarded the Nurse Aide Pin – the
highlight of the event. Applause, hugs and flowers were offered to
each internship graduate amid cheers, congratulatory comments
and lots of photos.

NFA Health Science Education/Nurse Aide Program Instructor
Linda Romano speaks to the graduates.
The students had been diligently preparing for months for
that afternoon, which marked the formal completion of their
nurse aide internships at Elant and the official start of their
nurse aide/ health care careers, as well as continued educational
opportunities.
The Elant at Fishkill nurse aide internship is part of the
Newburgh Enlarged City School District’s Nurse Aide Training
Program, offered under the auspices of the district’s Health and
Human Services Academy at NFA.
Its mission is to provide programs to prepare students to enter
the work force and/or post-secondary education as they explore
human service careers. It’s open to seniors and prepares students
for employment in long-term care facilities, home health agencies
and hospitals, where basic bedside care is needed. Curriculum
is mandated by the New York State Department of Health and
includes the required clinical hours in a nursing facility.
Elant at Fishkill’s relationship with NFA is its only high
school connection, although educational partnerships include
programs with BOCES, Duchess and Orange community colleges
and Mount Saint Mary College.
“The Elant/NFA collaboration is very important as it
benefits the future health care providers and gives students
the opportunity to interact with residents and acclimate to the
working environment with the tools from the classroom,” said
Diane Flower, Elant at Fishkill’s Director of Nursing.. “Elant is
pleased to provide this opportunity for the students, being the
catalyst for employment and the bridge to practice for these future
health care leaders. This is one of our many relationships with
the local education communities. And we’re happy to do that.”
Elant is offering jobs to 24 people through its “Bridges to
Practice” pilot program.
“Some are permanent, though most are part-time and per
diem and one person is already working full-time evenings,” she
said. “Some are staying local as they continue their education
and some are going away to school. We are happy to offer them
(work) time during weekends or during the week when they can.
We wanted to create that relationship so we have that connection
and they have ‘a home’ to come back to.”
NFA Health Science Education/Nurse Aide Program
Instructor Linda Romano will continue to work with students
during their first weeks as Elant employees during their floor
orientation.
“I approached Elant with the idea and I will volunteer my
who was an Elant clinical educator before joining NFA. “I also
understand the clinical situation in health care, the need for quality
workers is at its highest and I want our community to have quality
care provided by quality individuals.”
Romano said the NFA Health Science Career/ Nurse Aide
program is New York State Education Department/Department
of Health approved and follows a rigorous curriculum. Students
will sit for the state’s Nurse Aide Certification exam and following
the successful completion, will have earned the title of “Certified
Nurse Aide.” For the second consecutive year, the program had a
100 percent skills pass rate on the New York State exam.
The program is equally beneficial to Elant.
47 NFA seniors were recognized for their internship achievements
and were awarded a Nurse Aide pin during the celebratory event
held at Elant at Fishkill.
“It will help the facility support each student to be successful
in his or her new position and be helpful to maintain staff
retention,” Flower added. “There’s a lot of people looking to get
into the health care field. Usually when you choose this kind of
field, you have to have this caring gene. What we’ve been telling
our staff is to help these young people become the kind of team
members that they want to work with each day.”
Flower summed up the importance of programs like this:
“Elant understands the importance of community connections.
And we understand the importance of caring for others.”
