Dear Sennett Families,
It is difficult to believe how fast this school year is going! We are off to a very strong start for the fourth
quarter, having celebrated our successes of third quarter at House Recognition Meetings. Congratulations
to our students who were highly successful third quarter! I encourage all students to focus and finish the
fourth quarter strong and maintain focus on their academic achievement.
It is extremely important that our students give maximum effort during our MAP testing which will begin
on May 4th. The data from this assessment is used to guide our instructional practices and supports.
Furthermore the MAP assessment is a tremendous measure of your student’s growth from Fall to Spring.
Please take an opportunity to discuss MAP testing with your child.
This newsletter includes information about the end of the year activities and events; particularly for the 8th
grade students. An additional mailing for 8th grade students will be mailed home. Please remember to
check the school calendar of events as we have many special events and celebrations and we don’t want
you to miss a thing!
Sincerely,
Tremayne Clardy
Sennett Principal

HISTORIC COMPETITION
Last month, three dedicated Sennett Stars rose out of bed early (on a Saturday!) to take part
in the African American History Bowl at the Doyle Administration Building downtown.
Under the leadership of Mr. Quinn Craugh, these students have been part of an African
American History Club to prepare for this competition. Sponsored by the local chapter of a
national organization, 100 Black Men of Madison, the students diligently read challenging
text and quizzed each other as they studied for this event. The Sennett team reached the
Semi-Finals of the competition, finishing fourth overall. Sennett Middle School proudly
recognizes Charles Suggs, Eli Dengler-Jeanblanc and Khersa Morgan for representing
Sennett so very admirably.

SBLT Summary
Eighth Grade Awards, Recognition Ceremony, Dance:
Tuesday, June 9th, 2015
Dear Parents/Guardians of Sennett Eighth Grade Students:
May, 2015
Tuesday, June 9th is the date reserved for celebrating and honoring Sennett’s 8th grade students.
Eighth Grade Awards will be in the morning. Only parents of 8th grade students receiving an award
are invited to attend, due to limited space. If your child is to receive an award, you will be
contacted prior to the ceremony so you can plan to attend.
The 8th Grade Recognition Ceremony is on Tuesday, June 9th from 12:25 – 1:20 p.m. in the La
Follette Spectator Gym. Enter La Follette through the “activities entrance,” off the main parking lot,
which is marked with a large sign. La Follette has final exams until 11:55, so the building /
parking will not be available to you until 12:00.
Our sixth and seventh grade students will be dismissed at 11:00. The tickets and your child’s
invitation to the Dessert Dance will be mailed to your home by the end of May.
Due to limited space, each family is provided with 6 tickets for attendance. If you do not need all 6
tickets, give them to another 8th grade family for their use, or return them to the main office for
dissemination to a family in need of additional tickets.
In accordance of maintaining a dignified and respectful tone, we ask the audience to follow the
same behavioral expectations that we set for our students:

We want all students to feel equally appreciated and honored, so please do not call
attention to any individual students.
 Polite applause is the only appropriate response. Please avoid whistling, hooting,
chanting, yelling out individual student names, etc. We want to hear each child’s name
when it is called out.
 Your undivided attention should be given to all presenters; please avoid side
conversations, moving in / out of gym, or other distracting activity.
 Please do not leave your seats during the ceremony to take pictures. Following the
ceremony, and prior to the dance, we will provide time for families to take pictures and
visit with friends and families.
 If you bring flowers or balloons to the ceremony for your child, they will be checked in at
a table near the Gym’s entrance, as they obscure the views of others in the audience.
The Dessert Dance will immediately follow the Recognition Ceremony on 6/9, from 1:20 – 2:45.
Students may then take the #16 bus home, or be picked up by a parent or guardian. All 8th grade
students must attend the dance until at least 2:37, unless signed out by a parent after the recognition
ceremony (via a principal or learning coordinator). Students who leave after 2:37 will not be readmitted.
Please discuss our end-of-the-year expectations for the Dance with your child(ren); it is our sincere
hope that every eighth grader will EARN this very special privilege:
 It is a party in the students’ honor – a fond farewell.
 It is not a FORMAL (prom-like) event. It is not intended to put financial pressures on
students/families. Appropriate attire includes shirts & perhaps ties for males; tuxedoes are not
appropriate. Dresses (not formals), or dress pants and blouses, are appropriate for females.
Limousines are not allowed.
 The dance is open to all of our 8th grade students. Guests are not permitted. Any student absent
or suspended during the day of the dance will not be permitted to attend. Furthermore, any
students who are at risk of non-promotion -- who have not signed up for summer school -- will
not be allowed to a) go through the recognition ceremony or b) attend the dance.
The last day of school for all 8th grade students is on Wednesday, June 10th. Sixth and seventh
grade students report for their last day on Thursday, June 11th with an early dismissal of 9:05 am.
Mark Your Calendars for the next
Latino Parent Meeting
Thursday, May 14
from 6:00-7:00

Middle School – 8th Grade Promotion
Promotion criteria are determined by state law and MMSD policy. To be promoted from 8th grade to 9th grade a student must meet the
Report Card criteria or the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam criteria (science and social studies), Smarter Balanced Assessment
criteria (language arts and math), or pass a district approved summer school program.
1. Report Card Criteria: By the end of 8th grade a student must have a 1.67 cumulative grade point average (GPA) during both 7th and
8th grade in English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies in order to be promoted.
2. Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam Criteria: If the student has less than a 1.67 cumulative GPA in any one of the four core
content areas (English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies), the student will need a score of “basic” or above on the
Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination (WKCE) in science and social studies, and a score of “basic or above on the Smarter
Balanced Assessment in language arts and math.
3. MAP: Promotion to ninth grade based on a score of basic or above on the MAP fall Math and Reading.
4. Smarter Balanced Assessment: If the student has less than a 1.67 cumulative GPA in any one of the four core content areas
(English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies), the student will need a score “basic or above on the Smarter Balanced
Assessment in language arts and math.
5. Summer School Option: Students who do not meet the report card, Smarter Balanced, or WKCE promotion criteria must pass a district
approved summer school program in order to be promoted. Passing the MMSD summer school math course with a report card grade of “2”
or higher meets the math criteria. Passing the MMSD summer school language arts course with a report card grade of “2” or higher meets
criteria for language arts, science, and social studies. In addition to a passing grade in these core areas, they must have no more than 3
consecutive or 5 non-consecutive missed days (excused or unexcused) of summer school. If the student did not demonstrate proficiency
in the area(s) of concern after attending summer school (English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies), they will remain
in 8th grade.
6. Students with Disabilities: The Individualized Education Program (IEP) team for a student with a disability determines whether the
student’s promotion is governed by MMSD promotion criteria or the student’s IEP in the four core content areas.
7. English Language Learners: English Language Learners who are at English Proficiency Levels 1 or 2 will be promoted to 9th grade.
English Language Learners who are at English Proficiency Levels 3, 4, or 5 at the beginning of their 8th grade year must meet promotion
criteria in math (report card grade or above) and WKCE score is basic or above in science or social studies to be promoted to 5th grade.
English Language Learners, DPI levels 6 and 7 have to meet criteria in all content areas Spanish/English language arts, mathematics,
science, and social studies in order to be promoted. For language arts calculations it takes the higher score of either Spanish or English
language arts to determine cumulative GPA. If the student has less than 1.67 (GPA), placement will be determined by WKCE in science
and social studies.
Retention Options
Students who do not meet promotion criteria will remain in 8th grade until they satisfy district requirements. Students retained in 8th grade
have the option to repeat 8th grade in their school of residence or attend the AERO alternative program.
A retained 8th grade student who meets the District’s requirement(s), based on teacher and principal recommendations, shall only be
promoted to a high school program at semester. Students will not be retained for two consecutive years.
Appeal Process
Parent/guardian may appeal a retention decision to the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary School.
Procedures
8. For 8th grade students entering the district with missing or incomplete information, a teacher and principal may recommend promotion
based on mastery of content areas. The recommendation must be approved by the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education.
9. All 8th grade students entering the school district during the 4th quarter will be promoted.
10. GPAs and report cards from other school districts may be used in meeting promotion criteria.
11. There is not a single test students can take instead of the WKCE (science and social studies) or Smarter Balanced (language arts and
math) to show proficiency in English/language arts, math, science, or social studies.
If you have questions about the promotion criteria, please contact your student’s principal.
Voices and Visons
Congratulations to the following authors and artists; they were accepted
into the 2015 publication of Voices & Visions. On Thursday, May 14th they
will be honored at a reception at Sennett where they will receive their
personal copy and refreshments prepared by our Catering Club. Their
families are invited to attend as well.

ENROLLMENT HEAD COUNT
2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR
WILL YOUR CHILD BE ATTENDING SENNETT NEXT
SCHOOL YEAR?
In order to plan effectively for next school year’s programming at Sennett, we need to determine the
approximate enrollment as best possible. There is a form at the end of the newsletter for you to fill out and
send to the Sennett office with your child. This is also important for your children’s academic record, so they
are not marked as truant from school in September. Thank you!

Students will need to bring a) a swimming suit, b) a towel, c) sunscreen and d) a bag in which to hold their
