Tiger Tales February 2011 President’s Message Our January meeting at Dave & Buster’s was a lot of fun for those of us attending. SOUTHEASTERN GTO ASSOCIATION As usual, Denny had a great time beating the rest of us on the NASCAR Racing game. Pam and Jerry Hickox crashed almost as many times as I did, although Pam managed to actually roll her car during one race. Understandably, I was suitably humbled by the racing expertise shown by our fellow members. John Link won one of the Remote Controlled races that I just couldn’t get the hang of. Jeremiah Riggio was nice enough to bring his brother and his wife who have just moved back to the Atlanta area. They are attempting to restore their father’s ’68 convertible. It should be on the way to a nationally renowned restorer in Ohio soon. promised. Denny told a joke that was actually a bit funny! I know, hard to believe. I dislike harping on the lack of Officer/Board Member volunteers, but your club needs more participation from more members. I want you to realize that we will be incurring additional expenses (read higher dues) if we have to start paying for newsletter services. Kevin Link has graciously offered to handle the next issue of Tiger Tales, but after that we will have to contract for someone to produce it. David Peebles has purchased a home in Florida and will no longer be handling the Meetings. You have asked me to handle the President’s duties, which I have agreed to do - with the understanding that a Treasurer will step forward. Please get involved. After the arcade we went to lunch at Pappasito’s on Windy Hill Road. So, Chevrolet, being GM's big sales and profit division, campaigned to GM to "kill" this car. When Chevy was coming out with its 6-cyl. sports car with its 2-speed "powerglide" transmission and side curtains, here was a sports car from Olds with a big old V-8 and power windows. So, GM no to Oldsmobile on building this car. The world's rarest automobile: a 1954 Concept Old's Rocket F88 - the only one in existence. (read the story below) John S. Hendricks, (Discovery Communications founder) paid in excess of 3 million to acquire this 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 Convertible Concept Car. After spending decades as a collection of parts stuffed into wooden crates, the F-88 was reassembled. In 1954 the F-88 was a Motorama Dream Car and was one of only two, or an unconfirmed possible three, ever created. The F-88 seen here is literally the only car left of its kind and was sold to John and Maureen Hendricks at the prestigious Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Scottsdale, AZ, for an unbelievable $3,240,000. This acquisition made automotive history and is the cornerstone of the Gateway Colorado Automobile Museum in its own special room in a rotating display worthy of the F-88! It was 1973 when I first fell in love with GTO’s. My brother, Mark, had just bought a 1967 HO (Regimental Red with a Back Vinyl Roof) from a guy who lived in our home town of Ridgefield, CT. I had just finished the drive train (327 SB with all the go-fast goodies) on my 1957 Chevy Belair when I realized it would take a lot more money to complete, especially since I was 15 at that time and in 6 months I would obtain the “Holy Grail”… my Driver’s License!! I sold the 57 to a friend (who still has it today) and began to search for another car when Dad approached me about buying the 67 since Mark wanted to buy a 69 Judge he had his eyes on. It took me all of 10 seconds to agree and we arrived at a price of $900. I drove the car throughout high school with the occasional street race for a case of beer (it ate Chevelles!). Then it was time to head to college in Ohio. While in school my Dad sold my baby to help defray the tuition costs and I never saw it again. For many years I always wondered what happened to it but, as life is, my priorities changed with marriage and children. I never gave up the dream of owning another Pontiac. Four or five years ago the market was on fire with very steep prices and it just was not possible to make a serious run at getting my wife, Nancy’s approval to consider buying one. Eventually, I found a 67 on E-bay that I felt was within my range and began my sales job on getting her to allow me to bid on it! After getting her nod of approval I began bidding in earnest with about 2 hours left on the auction. The bidding ended at approximately 1am….. I won the auction with a $1000 less than I had budgeted. Little did I realize how that $1,000 savings was important because that was what it cost to ship it to my front door! On a cold wet March afternoon in 2007 I received a call that the flatbed would be delivering it within the hour. I quickly placed a call to Mark and he was on his way to my house as he was excited as I was. On his way over, he spotted the car on the flatbed and called me to say, “It’s a beauty”! That was fate because the driver was lost and he had to guide him to my house. I was nervous and excited at the same time and went out to greet my new toy! After we unloaded the car, reality set in…..no brakes, air shocks shot and tires rubbing on the fender wells. We barely got it into my garage as I had forgotten that it was over 17 feet long!! Well, as some of you know, I am still working on getting it back into shape but realize that’s what makes it such a great hobby…a constant work in progress. With help from many club members I feel fortunate to be a part of a club that shares my passion for “The Great One” and I am hopeful to make some significant progress on the car this year and look forward to many club events and car shows. My dream has come full circle!! Page 10 Articles & Interesting Information -continued. . . passionate, about my GOAT -continued- Page 11 Articles & Interesting Information -continued- "How Long Have You Owned a Car?" Mr. Allen Swift (Springfield, MA) received this 1928 Rolls-Royce Picadilly P1 Roadster from his father, brand new - as a graduation gift in 1928. He drove it up until his death last year.....at the age of 102!!! He was the oldest living owner of a car from new. Just thought you'd like to see it. He donated it to a Springfield museum after his death. It has 170,000 miles on it, still runs like a Swiss watch, dead silent at any speed and is in perfect cosmetic condition. 82 years — That's approximately 2000 miles per year. Can you imagine having the same car for 82 years?!!! I guess it was no longer under warranty . . . Page 12 SEGTOA Club Stuff I would like to take this opportunity to welcome new members, Earl Doan from Hoschton, GA Clay Chatham, Alpharetta, GA Bob Bardes from Tallahassee, FL We look forward to meeting you personally at our next club meeting. NOTE: to our existing non-renewed members, please send in your renewal dues today! It is important, as we have many exciting events planned for this year and wouldn’t want anyone left out! I am looking forward to the February meeting, so if you are planning to attend and want to renew, please bring a check to the meeting. Many thanks. Kim Fowler, Membership VP Page 13 SEGTOA Club Stuff -continued- Editor Notes Thank you to David Peebles for his time as Meetings VP. There are open positions for Technical Advisors for 1970 and 2004-06. Anyone knowledgeable in Pontiacs for these year models, please let one of the board members know so we can add you as a contact for technical assistance. Club Member Announcements & Information Update on Scott Immekus: Scott is coming back to the states on Feb. 12th. Bob and Pam are driving Scott’s truck and belongings to him that weekend. Scott is having a hard time; with continued headaches from the concussion and his leg is still very painful. The Immekus’ are looking forward to that upcoming reunion and being able to have him back home, eventually. As you can imagine, Pam is storing up lots of extra TLC to shower Scott with upon his return. Please join in praying for Scott’s complete recovery, for traveling safety for the entire Immekus family and strength for Bob and Pam with the extra burden and stress.
