President’s Note Tiger Tales April 2010 Can you believe the cold and rainy weather again keeping down attendance to the March SEGTOA meeting? With the BOPC coming up in April the sun just has to start shining. SOUTHEASTERN GTO ASSOCIATION And with the annual BOPC on April 23rd and 24th, we will now have a SEGTOA club meeting Saturday April 10th to aid everyone in cleaning up your baby for the spring and summer. I checked out over 15 facilities in the Cobb/Fulton area not only for the quality of the wash and detailing at a reasonable price but also the capability to park at least 20 GTO‘s while the facility is open to the public. I have used this facility before and feel their washing is gentle to my GOAT‘s 20 year old finish and their after-wash detailing and buffing provide the touch up needed for a show display. You will still have to pay for any of the levels of cleaning you desire but added services like an oil change will be discounted. A flyer is attached with the newsletter. Pre-registration for the BOPC cuts off in mid April so get your application in for a good car discount. Also, consider coming in on Friday night with a hotel reservation and fellowship evening with other GM car clubs. Hope to see everyone at the BOPC. We will have the club meeting around 3pm on BOPC Saturday. GTO‘s that have simply sat for a number of years or were not driven whether stored outside in the back yard, under a car port, in a junkyard, barn or even in a closed garage are going to attract squatters. The cotton blanket used in the rear seat back and bottom is a favorite nesting material and home for Mice. And often mice will branch out using the seat cotton to build a new separate nest in another part of the parked car. Three examples: 1. The tail lights and gas sending unit wiring of a 70 hardtop would not function after being parked for years under a car port. Pulling out the bottom rear seat I found the wires not just chewed apart but about a foot of all the wires going to the rear missing. And I found a large ball of cotton in the bottom corner of the rear seat indicating a mouse nest. 2. While connecting the vacuum hoses to a 68 carb system I noticed a large lump between the inside of the hood and underhood insulation where a hood tach would go. This was a car that was parked in a house garage for years but not driven. Removing the insulation clips and dropping the insulation a ball of rear seat cotton fell out. Mouse nest again. Removing the rear seat bottom I again found a large clump of cotton blanket missing. 3. Recently while replacing the original front and rear seat covers for a 67 GTO that I believe was stored outside for a long time before any restoration I found what you see in the enclosed photos. The rear seat upside down with a large pile of cotton on one side of the seat matted together for a mouse nest. The bottom back of the passenger seat stuffed with rear seat cotton for a mouse nest including the deceased mouse that I believe was smashed when someone sat in the passenger seat. The moral of the story is if it has been years since you pulled your rear seat bottom out do so just now to check for unexpected guests. Page 8 Page 9 „69 GTO Controlled by iPod Touch Courtesy of Dave Ellis The Parrot AR.Drone quadricopter was probably the coolest thing ever controlled via iPhone or iPod touch... until this. Dave Phipps has hooked up a '69 Pontiac GTO to his iPod touch -- he's been rebuilding these cars for a long time, and this particular one was picked up out of a farm for just $400. It's worth a lot more than that now, though, because he's replaced all of the wiring in the car and remotely connected it to his iPod, so he can start the engine, open up the doors, put the top up or down, and even control the radio all from the iPod touch. There's a video of Phipps showing the system off after the break (sorry iPhone users, it's in Flash). He originally used Bluetooth, but now has the car set up on its own wireless network and he's got it working with a RedEye IR system, so he can even do macros and open all of the doors with one button and so on. He can't actually drive the car, but he can turn on the ignition, start the motor and even rev it up, all from the iPod touch. Very, very awesome! You can watch the video at: http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/24/69-gto-controlled-by-an-ipod-touch/ To My SEGTOA Friends from Jerry Hamilton: Regretfully I will not be attending this year‘s BOP show on April 24th. I hope everyone has a great time and that the show is very successful at it's new venue. This year I have a much more important event to attend. My son, Charlie, is getting married on that day! Charlie attended last year's BOP with me, and attended his first BOP at age 1 in 1982. That was the only the 2nd year for the show. He now owns the Locos Grill and Pub in Lawrenceville in the Hobby Lobby Shopping Center across from Gwinnett Medical Center. If you're in the area stop by and congratulate him. So, barring unforeseen circumstances, I'll see everyone next year. But this year I have something a little more important to do. Page 10 March SEGTOA Meeting By Jon Ward Two firsts happened in one meeting this past March, our first meeting at an indoor firing range and the second meeting in a row that Denny Sanford told a funny story. Yes, you heard me right there were no moans, groans, or "oh Denny please" from anyone, just laughs. It appears Denny has stopped calling Joey Bishop's old writers for jokes and has decided to get some new material to share at meetings and it's working out well for all of us. We started our meeting at an early hour just before 9:00 AM at the American Classic Marksman in Norcross to get a few open ranges for those SEGTOA members that enjoy shooting. This was a good meeting and a change of pace so many thanks go out to our Meeting VP David Peebles for putting this on. It had been before my son was born over 10 years ago that I had last shot any of my pistols and it was nice to know that my advanced age has not hurt my ability to put a couple of 45 rounds through Osama Bin Laden's heart. Yes they sold targets with that bearded boob on them and I couldn't help myself and had to squeeze off a couple of rounds at him. I passed the target along to other members and understand by the end of our time at the rang he was missing multiple body parts. After the meeting we met in the parking lot for round three of the Jim Norman's tech sessions and this one was on engine detailing. This was a great session and again Jim showed us that cleaning and detailing a GTO engine compartment is not complicated or difficult to do for any level of enthusiast. Basic products you can get at a number of stores made up most of what Jim showed us and with his advice anyone's engine compartment can look like new again. A great session for those who show their cars. You may have noticed a box of Do-si-dos on top of the radiator of the white 70 GTO and there is an interesting story that goes along with it. It seems Jim was under a fellow member's GTO in his garage working when he was approached by several girl scouts selling cookies. Not wanting to get out from under the car he asked them to go into his wallet on his work bench and take out the money they needed for two boxes. One month later he was the proud owner of two cases of cookies. Apparently he did not indicate individual boxes and it was assumed he was a big spender by the Girl Scouts. You would think a man who has been married as long as Jim would keep a better eye on his wallet but he did end up with some good cookies. Our next meeting is at the BOP&C at the Hilton/Marietta Hotel and Conference Center April 24th. Please make plans to attend whether you show a car or not because this is an important event for our club and we need to support the Cadillac Club who is putting it on for the first time. If you need further information on it please check the website which also has a link to register for the event.
