The mission of the Dallas Ecological Foundation includes:
● To fund and promote the teaching of outdoor life skills by
conducting and supporting a wide range of educational
initiatives, primarily utilizing our youth programs.
● To fund and promote the conservation of wildlife and our
world’s ecology.
● To fund and promote scientific and biological studies of the wild
animals of the world, in an effort to provide a sound basis for
scientific evaluation of the management of those animals and
their habitat.
● To provide funding and cooperative support to other charitable,
educational and governmental organizations pursuing the same
or similar goals of our foundation.

On the heels of the overwhelmingly
successful 2009 convention, Drumbeats,
the Dallas Safari Club is poised to present
its 2010 Convention and Sporting Expo,
First Light.
The venue for this year’s convention has
changed to the Dallas Convention Center,
and the event will run Jan. 7-10. This year’s
show will have more than 1,000 exhibits
and is expected to draw more than 24,000
people.
The show is produced by the incredible DSC staff and a volunteer corps
affectionately known as the “DSC 100,”
which includes more than 500 individuals
who give 100 percent to DSC. Along with
DSC Executive Director Ben Carter, this
group is responsible for the Texas charm
and southern hospitality that convention exhibitors and attendees have come
to expect from the most efficiently run
convention in the industry.

First Light kicks off with an Exhibitor
Welcome Party at Eddie Deen’s Barbeque
restaurant on Jan. 6. Evening banquets
will be held at the host hotel, the Dallas
Hyatt Regency Reunion, Jan. 7-9. The club
also continues its wildly popular Ladies
Luncheon at 11 a.m. Jan. 8, and its Life
Member Breakfast, featuring guest speaker
Coenraad Vermaak, on Jan. 9. On Jan. 7,
the Conklin Foundation will present the
Conklin Award. During the show run, DSC
will present the Peter Hathaway Capstick
Hunting Heritage Award, Malek Award,
Outstanding Hunting Achievement Award,
Colin Caruthers Young Hunter Award,
Outfitter of the Year Award and Award of
Excellence.
As always, First Light features an
incredible array of the top guides, outfitters, clothiers, gun makers, jewelers and
wildlife artists from around the world — all
in the fabulous expo hall at the Dallas

Innovation is what drives Shane
Wilson’s business, Titan UTV.
The president of the Hutto-based
company is part of the emerging
electric vehicle industry. An electrical engineer and avid bow hunter,
Wilson welcomes the challenge of
building a better vehicle by pushing
innovative design rather than relying
on what’s out there.
He says most electric 4x4 builders
have tended to take the ubiquitous
golf cart model and modify it for
hunters. What Titan has done is to
engineer its vehicles from the ground
up — beginning with its tubular
frame and undercarriage — by using
off-road racing technology. Others
followed this design in 2009.
His vehicles are designed to meet

the needs of hunters who want that
extra power to tromp through fields,
mud and brush.
His popular Titan Scout 4x4
Electric Vehicle, for example, is a
quiet, powerful vehicle that offers
such features as four-wheel independent suspension, an independent
coil over shock system, four-wheel
hydraulic disc brakes, dual controllers and rack and pinion steering.
Its high-output dual motors and
controllers generate Best in Class
horsepower (up to 54 hp). Speaking
of first to market with innovation,
the Scout Series will have an optional
dual motor-dual controller AC drive
system. This offers another maintenance-free solution for customers.
“AC is the way of the future for
electric vehicles, and we wanted to
be the first to offer this,” Wilson said.
Since his company began making
the vehicles three years ago, it has
proven to be popular among hunters.
So popular that Titan will change its
name to Titan EV (Electric Vehicle)
in 2010 to better reflect the diversification of its product portfolio.
As of 2010, the company will
offer six different models, including
the new Explorer Series unveiled
recently.
“I think the Explorer will be our
best-selling vehicle,” Wilson said.
The new Explorer LSV is the
first electric vehicle that offers a
four-speed transmission. What the
manual transmission will do, Wilson
said, is offer better maneuverability
on rough off-road terrain.
The LSV has plenty of torque and
power. And it’s a spacious buggy with
four bucket seats, all of which face
forward. Plus, it has a rear bed for
storage. The Explorer LSV, which can
travel about 45 miles per charge in
smooth driving conditions, sells for
$14,800, fully-loaded.
The Explorer LSV is available in
two-wheel drive, with the release of
a four-wheel drive model planned for
August 2010.
“But don’t let the two-wheel
drive discourage you,” Wilson said.
“This vehicle has more torque and
horsepower than any other on the
market.”
Titan also offers an optional solar
panel that can be mounted on the
electric UTV to extend the driving
time up to 20 percent per day.
And, because electric vehicles tend
to be all about the battery, Wilson
will have AGM batteries in all his
2010 vehicles. He is also looking into
lithium ion battery technology in his
search for more efficient batteries.

Lazzeroni rifles are powerful, reliable
Company brings advances
in ammunition, firearms
to big-game hunting

It was a hand-drawn sketch of a cartridge
that sparked the birth of the Lazzeroni Arms
Company.
In 1994, John James Lazzeroni drew a design
of what is now the Lazzeroni proprietary
cartridge on a white piece of paper. Based on
that sketch, he had a run of brass cases made
to his specifications. He liked what he saw and
shortly after started his Tucson, Ariz., arms
company to produce his long magnum proprietary cartridges.
A year later, Lazzeroni, who had been
building custom rifles based upon Weatherby
actions since 1988, introduced the Lazzeroni
2000 series bolt-action hunting rifles to handle
his new lineup of Lazzeroni calibers.
Today, Lazzeroni makes long magnum
cartridges, short magnum cartridges, LazerHead
copper bullets and, of course, continues to
expand his premium hunting rifle line.
“The goal of Lazzeroni has always been to
build the finest bolt-action hunting rifles in the
world, shooting the fastest cartridges available
in their respective calibers,” says Lazzeroni.
“Our product lineup today has evolved into
something very special, something that comes
along only once in a generation.”
One product that has attracted a lot of attention in the hunting community is the Lazzeroni
Global Hunter rifle, which is available in six
models.
Based on Lazzeroni’s standard long-action
rifle (the L2000ST), the Global Hunter
mountain rifle features a precision CNCmachined 17R stainless steel receiver, a stainless
steel, match-grade button-barrel and a supercrisp Jewel competition trigger. The metalwork
is finished with electroless nickel to withstand
harsh weather. A diamond-fluted bolt shaft
replaces the previous helical fluting, and the
firing pin is now made out of titanium to reduce
weight and firing pin lock time.

this gun weighs about 2 pounds less than its
predecessor. The short-magnum model (the
L2005SLT), for example, weights 6.1 pounds.
The long-magnum (the L2005LLT) comes in
at slightly more than 7 pounds. Both have a
new slim line graphite-composite stock and
precision-machined aluminum-alloy floorplate/
trigger guard assembly.
Whatever the model, these guns — which

Lazzeroni’s products do exactly what he says

— in his published velocity figures for his

Big game, big variety in New Zealand
Many species of exotic
game available at huge
southern Pacific estate

New Zealand’s Glencree Hunting Estate,
nestled near the coastal town of Kaikoura where
mountains meet the sea, boasts drop-deadgorgeous views. But for clients of South Pacific

Red stag and wapiti: Hunted from late
February through August, the red stags on the

and width. The rut for stags, elk and fallow buck

goat are hunted all season.
Tahr and chamois: Hunted April through
September, these species rut between about May

and early July. This is when they are in their
full winter coats. Tahr and chamois are hunted
either on foot or by using the helicopter to
access the hunting area on their 100,000-acre
concession on the South Island’s Southern Alps.
Mike recommends that clients who want to
hunt on foot out of tent camps budget at least
five days for their excursion.
Ducks: The season for paradise ducks and
Canada geese is from Feb. 20 to March 31
(Limit of 25 on ducks; no limit on geese). The
season for mallard, grey, and paradise ducks
as well as black swan and pheasant is from the
first Saturday in May to the last Sunday in July.
(Limit of 50 on a mixed bag of ducks and five
swans.)

Ruger looks to future with
new online presence

For Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc., which
has been named Firearms Manufacturer of the
Year for the third year in a row by the National
Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers, it is
all about quality products and quality service.
“We appreciate this recognition of our efforts

provides more effective recoil reduction. The

Thormahlen & Cochran Safaris is a dynamic
African trophy hunting safari operation with
free-range hunting concessions in South Africa
and Namibia for plains game and dangerous

Dangerous game is hunted mostly in the

hunting big leopard — with hounds, hunting
over bait or in combination. Excellent cheetah
is hunted in Central Namibia. We are proud of
our high success rate achieved. An exclusive
free-range black rhino hunt (subspecies bicornis
bicornis) was conducted by our client David
Reinke in 2009.
T&C Safaris has two black rhino bulls available
for 2010 and 2011. Reinke also hunted a freerange lion and several plains game in Namibia.

The Y.O. Ranch has been a graceful
presence in the heart of Hill Country
for well over a century. Since Capt.
Charles Schreiner founded the ranch
in the late 1880s, six generations of
Schreiners have tended this beautiful
and rugged land.
The ranch, located 40 miles west
of Kerrville, has thrived during good
times and has survived the hard
times.
It was during one of the not-sogood times that the canny widow
Myrtle Schreiner, who took the
ranch’s reins in 1933, started leasing
some of her lands to hunters. In
the years since, several other Texas
ranchers have followed suit, but the
widow gave the Y.O. a healthy head
start in building an international
reputation as a superior hunting
ranch.
When her son Charles Schreiner III
took over in the 1950s, he built up a
herd of Longhorns, which were then
facing extinction, and introduced
exotic species of wildlife to the rolling
hills of the Y.O. During the 1980s,
Louie Schreiner forged the ranch’s
reputation as “America’s Original
Game Ranch.”
Today, 19 members of the
Schreiners, led by managing partner
Charles Schreiner IV, run the ranch.
They are credited for setting new
standards in outdoor adventure and
hospitality.
The Y.O., a working ranch
spanning 40,000 acres, is home to
more than 1,000 Longhorns, the
rangy cattle breed that was the
foundation of the empire the first
Schreiner built. The 60-square- mile

ranch also is the adopted home of
more than 10,000 animals, including
50 species of such exotics as antelope,
impala, blackbuck, waterbuck, Oryx,
giraffe and ostrich.
More than 20 of those exotic
species originally found in North
Africa, China and Europe can be
hunted, as can trophy native wildlife.
The Hill Country’s Edwards Plateau
is home to some of the largest
white-tailed deer herds and Rio
Grande turkey populations. It is not
uncommon to see 50 to 100 bucks in
a single day.
It is the availability of these trophy
animals coupled with the Schreiner

hunters from across the U.S. and from
all over the world. The ranch also

The electric UTV continues to
grow in popularity. For hunters, it’s
a natural choice. The UTVs will take
them off road to areas that a vehicle
