News from the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents/Guardians,
This is our final month of the 2015 – 2016 school year. We have had an eventful year, and we
are looking forward to closing the school year with a lot of activities for our students. Please
make sure you carefully read our May calendar included in this edition for important dates.
As mentioned in our April newsletter, we will be enforcing our school-wide dress code policy.
We have been making exceptions for students who have had different situations arise with their
school uniforms, but we will not be making these same allowances without consequences when
we begin our new school year in August. If you begin shopping early for uniforms for next school
year, make sure you purchase white or black socks (ONLY), tennis shoes, and a navy blue
sweat shirt or jacket. You will receive a more specific uniform policy and school supply list when
report cards are sent home later this month. In addition, a welcome letter will be mailed home in
July with more information about our 2016 – 2017 school year.

WHOOOOO Makes a
Difference?
I would like to thank our 3rd – 5th grade parents who made sure students were present and on
time every day for our statewide testing last month. We have one more assessment coming up
for our 3rd and 4th graders. On May 10th, our 3rd and 4th grade students will be taking a Social
Studies field test. So again, parents please make sure your child is present and on time on May
10th.
In closing, discipline continues to be a challenge. Overall, our students are great students. It is
just unfortunate that over the last two months of school, we have been experiencing more unacceptable behaviors. So, as we draw near a close to this school year, please work with us to encourage our students to demonstrate appropriate behavior and respect on a daily basis.
Our school is only as good as the stakeholders which are our teachers, students, parents and
community…THANK YOU for your SUPPORT!!!

School Policies Notice and Parent Contract
This School Policies Notice and Parent Contract is to ensure that parents/guardians are aware of and adhere to our school’s policies and school-wide expectations. Policies are as follows:
STUDENT UNIFORM POLICY











Students must wear the hunter green polo uniform shirt with the embroidered school logo. Students may
wearNAVY uniform pants, shorts, skirts or skorts. (All shorts, skirts or skorts MUST be knee length.)
Pre-K students must wear the purple polo uniform shirt with the Cherbonnier/Rillieux pelican embroidered
logo.
Girls may only wear leggings under their skirts during cold weather months (November – March). Leggings may
only be BLACK, NAVY or WHITE—NO multi-colored or designed leggings.
Students may only wear BLACK, NAVY or WHITE socks.
ALL students EXCEPT pre-k and kindergarten MUST wear a belt with uniform pants and shorts.
Students MUST wear lace-up tennis shoes to school. Pre-k and kindergarten students ONLY may wear velcro
tennis shoes. Boots and buckle shoes are NOT allowed for safety reason and because students have PE daily.
Students are NOT allowed to wear hoodies in the school building just as hats may not be worn in the building.
NEW~ Students may only wear navy uniform bottoms on dress down days—shorts, skirts and skorts MUST be
knee length. Students’ dress down shirts MUST have a sleeve and appropriate graphics.
According to the Jefferson Parish Policies and Procedures Handbook (page 13 line number xv.), students may
NOT dye their hair any extreme colors nor may they wear any extreme hair styles.
Girls may only wear stud earrings. (Page 13 line number xiii.)
Boys may not wear earrings to school.
RECOMMENDED PARENT DRESS CODE
When parents are visiting the school campus, attending a field trip or volunteering at school related functions we
are asking that parents come appropriately dressed.
 Halter tops, strapless or spaghetti strap shirts or dresses should NOT be worn.
 Skirts and dresses should be no more than 2 inches above the knee and not excessively tight-fitting.
 Hair curlers, bonnets, slippers, pajama tops/bottoms and robes are not acceptable attire when attending field
trips or volunteering for school functions.
 Cell phone use in classrooms while visiting or volunteering is not allowed.
CARPOOL PROCEDURES



ALL carpool parents MUST enter the carpool line (on Primrose) from Azalea Dr. Please do not block the cross
streets or drive ways.
Carpool parents are asked NOT to park along any of the side streets or on the median to pick-up students. For
safety reasons, students are NOT allowed to walk across the parking lot to parked vehicles.
Students need consistency, so parents must decide if students will be carpool or walkers on a daily basis.

Pre-K News
First Grade News
May has arrived! This is a time to close out one
chapter and prepare for the next. Please reflect on
the children you entrusted with us on the first day
of school and realize the enormity of their growth
on many levels from social to academic. They
learned the numbers 0-20, letter names and letter
sounds. The students also learned how to appropriately solve problems and how to help each other be safe. Our focus has expanded more to include reading and writing words and sentences.
This is when your children finally understand the
knowledge they possess. They are proud of what
they can do and they should be! Please help us to
continue to help your children by sending them to
school well-rested and ready to learn. We have
more to learn before we get to the end of the
school year.
Each and every one of your children has touched
us in a different way. We have given them our very
best and they have given us their very best in return! Thank you for the opportunity!
Dear Parents,
Our students are working hard to finish a successful year of first grade! Our last few weeks of
school will be very busy and very important. We
will begin learning about the government, good
citizenship, and rules and laws in our last reading
unit. Students will be finding the main idea of
stories, retelling stories, and describing characters
and setting in many fiction and nonfiction
books. We will also learn about our country, the
United States of America, in social studies. In
math, we will begin a unit on fractions. We will
review all skills learned this year in order to be
successful on our end-of-the-year math benchmark assessment. The last few weeks of school
will be focused on introducing skills that will be
taught in 2nd grade.
Please remember to review our weekly high frequency and spelling words with your child each
day and always take the opportunity to have them
perform simple addition and subtraction problems. Please remind your children to come to
school prepared to learn and to exhibit appropriate classroom behavior. We thank you for your
continued support!

Kindergarten News
What? Say it isn’t so? Is it really May?
The Kindergarteners, or should I say the FIRED UP
and READY First Graders are filled with sight
words, expanded vocabulary, reading comprehension, math, science and social studies skills. Parents, know that school is not over; children learn
through repeated learning. Please make it a routine to continue reading daily with your child, reviewing sight words, and asking questions. This
keeps them prepared throughout the summer. We
are having a Pre-K/Kindergarten Moving Up Ceremony, Tuesday, May 24th @ 9:00AM. Please remember to dress your young scholar in their Sunday best. We look forward to continuing to build
and stretch until the very last day. Happy May

P.E. DEPARTMENT NEWS
We are coming to the end of another incredible
year here at Cherbonnier/Rillieux. What a year it
has been! We are so proud to be able to work
with your children every day with social and physical skills in PE. Students will be able to show off
everything they learned throughout the year during our upcoming Field Day activities. We would
love to see all of our parents come out and show
our students support! Remember that the weather will be hot, so please make sure your child is
dressed appropriately. They may bring water on
that day to stay hydrated. We hope you have a
safe and enjoyable summer!

Second Grade News
THIRD GRADE NEWS
It’s hard to believe we are approaching the end of
this school year! We have had such a wonderful
year!
We are going to spend the last few weeks of
school preparing for 3rd grade. We are reading
about the War of 1812 which will be great to
know about in the upcoming grades. In math, we
will be working on measurement this month. We
are also going to continue to practice adding and
subtracting up to 1,000. Then we will introduce
your children to multiplication and other 3rd grade
skills.
Please continue providing your child with lots of
opportunities to read over the summer. The public library has so many FREE fun activities! Also,
continue to practice necessary life skills that we
have learned about this year like telling time and
counting money.
Greetings from 3rd Grade:
We've had an exciting year. Our future fourth
graders are looking forward to showing the skills
that they have mastered in third grade. As you
prepare for the summer, continue to encourage
your child to read every night. It will build their
reading stamina and vocabulary. Don't forget to
stop by the public library to pick out exciting and
interesting chapter books to read for free. The
students should also continue to practice multiplication facts, addition and subtraction of 3 digit
to 3 digit numbers, and problem solving questions. There are many free websites that can
help students to enhance their skills in both reading and math during the summer.

ELA NEWS
Sped NEWS
Hooray for May! Summer is near,
we’re looking ahead to fun and cheer.
Before we get ready to have fun in the sun,
we’ll stay focused in class, for our work is not done.
We’re continuing to work hard in ELA,
to sharpen our skills so we must not play.
To be a success we know what we need,
to spend time studying and READ, READ, READ!!!!!
4th/5th Grade ELA
Ms. Grant, Ms. Weber, and Ms. Rogers have
been working with their students to become proficient using calculators to perform math computations. All of our students have been reviewing
writing and reading comprehension skills in preparation for the upcoming Statewide Testing. Our
5th graders have completed their Social Studies
projects on a Colonial Colony. We are looking
forward to the 4th and 5th grade End of the Year
Dance on May 12th, the PBIS Star Student field
trips to the Children's Museum (grades PK-2) on
May 17, and field trip to the French Quarter
(grades 3-5) on May 19.
Have a great summer! Remember to read at
least one book every week. Be sure to pick something fun that you enjoy!
