Even after three Christmas seasons on island, it still feels odd that it is so warm. I grew up in South Bend, Indiana, and if you are not familiar with the area, it usually starts snowing in October and melts in March! That being said, it is still a magical time of year, and I tried to take in as much of this wonderful, warm air as possible since this will be our last Hawaiian Christmas. People have been asking about the Beaux Arts Ball, so I wanted to share a little Q and A, we have passed around the last few years. It will take place on Saturday, February 7 at 5:00 pm. *This is an evening of fun for spouses only, so leave your soldier at home with the kids and a Disney movie! Think of it as a Girls’ (Spouses) Night Out. Here are the common 3 questions: Do I have to have 10 people? Answer: No. Tables will hold 10 people. If you have 10, you can decorate it as you wish. If you have 3 people in your group, then you will receive 3/10 of the table to decorate! If you are by yourself, no worries! Come and have fun anyway! Can anyone buy tickets? Answer: The only requirement is that a Hui member pick them up for purchase. Board members will have some to sell. Tickets will also be available for purchase at both Hui, January Luncheons at Fort Shafter and Schofield. Do I have to wear a costume? Answer: Ideally, yes. There is a prize for the group with the best costume. HOWEVER, if you feel like getting your inner Diva on, go for it! Ticket sales begin on January 1st. They are $25 each. Cash only and no refunds as we have to turn our numbers in to the Nehalani. Please send me an email if you have any questions, [email protected]. We are all so excited about this year’s event, so we hope to see you there! ~Shawna Hall Happy New Year! This month’s community outreach is our very own Schofield Thrift Shop. The Thrift Shop, located on Schofield Barracks across from Outdoor Recreation, is a non-profit store run by the Hui ‘O Na Wahine. The Thrift Shop takes donations and consignment, and offers our community great items and awesome deals. Most importantly, our scholarship and welfare grants are funded by proceeds from the store. The Thrift Shop relies on its amazing volunteers, so stop on by and speak with our lovely manager Shannon if you would like to get involved. Let’s help the thrift shop this month with items they need to stay clean and continue being a well-oiled machine. You will find the list of items they are requesting enclosed in the Lei. Mahalo! ~Michelle Jimenez Welcome to the New Year! I hope you all had an amazing Christmas! As much as I love Christmas, and I mean LOVE like Buddy the Elf love, I always look forward to January and the New Year. January stirs up excitement and resolution. It makes everything feel new and possible. We tend to examine our lives, relationships, goals, and desires whether we mean to or not. What are you resolving to do, or not do, this year? For starters, you should make it your resolution to make it to all of 2015’s luncheons starting with January’s annual Thrift Shop Fashion Show. I can’t tell you how entertaining it is to see your fellow Hui members strut their stuff down the runway in the latest Thrift Store fashions! I look forward to seeing all of your beautiful faces this year! Please let me know if you would like to participate in this year’s fashion show by contacting me at: [email protected]. ~Lexly Bledose Broke da Mouth December Excursion So there we were…at the last remaining Tiki Restaurant and Bar on the island, La Mariana. And no one was sipping a Mai Tai or a cocktail, or even a beer. Maybe it is me, but it just did not seem right. If you have never been to La Mariana, it is located off Sand Island Access Road (on the way to pick up or drop off your car to ship across the ocean). It has a tacky tiki décor that can only find charm in the islands. The typical lunch fare was bar food with a local flair. All the portions were fairly large. Our selections ranged from fish and chips to a curry chicken to a salad with grilled fish, Cajun style. Plantation iced tea was a good choice for many that afternoon. Only one check for large parties, with gratuity included. The real charm comes from the place itself. A lot more colorful in the evening with a piano player and lots of happy hour specials, but during the day, you can see all the carved tikis in a nautical theme. So, to recap the bottom line: enjoy large portions of traditional bar food with an island flair, drink in the tacky tiki décor, come with a fun attitude, and enjoy happy hour with your friends and the local piano player. Live aloha and talk story while sipping your drink in the last island tiki bar. It’s never too late to join our Broke da Mouth group. Keep a lookout for an e-vite or check our facebook page and website for date and location for January’s excursion. Remember, friends don’t let friends try new places alone. They can roll us all out the door together! ~Kathy Fox Our book club had a super turnout for the champagne and dessert book exchange extravaganza. If you were unable to come, you missed out on a fun, chatty, relaxing evening at the Carlson's. As usual Sandra had decorated the house beautifully with multiple themed Christmas trees that wowed the members. The desserts were a fantastic (and very rich) array of tempting delights and the book exchange was rife with stolen books and happy oohs and aahs as we took our new books home. We had a long discussion of Hidden America with varying reactions to the book. Readers learned about jobs that many of us had never thought about--but not everyone enjoyed it. Several liked the author's style and several hated it, so guess that's about par for the course with our book club chats. We vary a lot in ages and interests so our tastes are eclectic as well! Plan to join us at Jennifer Wurst's in Ewa on January 8th to discuss Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Other books that were recommended: Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy Karen Abbot What We Keep Elizabeth Berg The Beekeeper's Ball Susan Wiggs The Homesman Glendon Swarthout For those of you on Oahu, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season and look forward to seeing you at book club in 2015.
