Well, we are ready for you. Welcome to the Hui `O Na Wahine, an all ranks and all services spouses club located at Schofield , Barracks, Hawaii. Come join with other spouses for fun, friendship, and fellowship. One Team, One dream! One Team, One Dream has been our motto all summer and will continue to lead our discussions and decisions throughout the year. Regardless of our backgrounds, life experiences, and interests; our dreams are all extraordinarily similar. We want to live in a safe community where we feel supported and appreciated, and we want to have fun. Our dreams as a club this year reflect that idea. We want to work together to improve our communities by adopting parks and taking part in community beautification. We want to help our nonprofit organizations by donating our time as well as donating money and needed items. We want to do it together, as a team, and we want to have fun! Aside from enjoying the warm, fuzzy feelings you get from volunteer work, The Hui ‘O Na Wahine offers fun in a variety of forms. Our monthly luncheons are always a great time where you can shop for items from our vendors, enjoy the company of other spouses, and participate in our planned activities all while having a nice meal at the Nehelani. Our activity clubs offer another opportunity to enjoy comradery amongst spouses while participating in hobbies you enjoy. We are adding a few new clubs this year to include chick flicks and history hunters, so be sure to check our website and get involved. The backbone of our organization, The Hui Thrift Shop, is the reason we can give back to the community so generously. We were able to give back almost $100,000 last year due to the hard work and dedication of our Thrift Shop staff. In addition, the Thrift Shop supports our community by offering amazing deals on items people can utilize within their homes, so it is a win win for everyone. Volunteers can always be put to good use, so please consider spending some time in the Thrift Shop. We will hold a volunteer orientation on Monday, September 8 at 9:00, so stop by, meet the staff, and learn about how you can help. In addition to our luncheons, activity clubs, and philanthropy opportunities, we will also be organizing a spouse’s ball this year. The past two years it has been lovingly referred to as The Mock Dining In, but this year it has undergone a slight name change. As the costumes and decorations have become more elaborate, we have decided to play into the theme a little more and will now refer to our function as the Hui Beaux Arts Ball. There will be slight changes, but overall the idea is the same, so continue to work on your group’s theme, costumes, and skits. I am excited to be playing a role in such an amazing organization, surrounded by wonderful people. Thank you for choosing to be a part of our membership and joining the Hui Team. Together, we can make this a truly spectacular year! Shawna Hall Hui Ó Na Wahine President Aloha Hui ‘O Na Wahine! Michelle Jimenez here, I am excited to be your 1st Vice President for the 2014-2015 year. I have been married to my husband, Gary, and the army for over 13 years. Our son Nathan is a very active and energetic 12 year old who keeps me busy with his year-round basketball team. Now that school is back in session I can look forward to some much needed “me” time. The Hui is a wonderful place for meeting new people; developing friendships and opportunities to give back to the community we love. I encourage you to get involved. We have a variety of clubs that will get you out and about all while having a blast. We will have opportunities to volunteer and be out in the community if you like to give back as well. I’m looking forward to another year and meeting you. Michelle Hi! My name is Lexly Bledsoe, and I am beyond excited to be your 2014-2015 Hui Second VP! Last year I served on the Hui Board as one of your Historians. Through that experience, I found a stimulating group of women who share my elation for service, charity, and fellowship. I am confident that you will be thrilled with the luncheons we have lined up for you this year, as we have worked hard all summer to ensure a successful, productive, and lively year of entertainment and activity. I am a born and bred Texan, where I met my husband of 5 years way back in middle school! We have been through so much life together and have been blessed with 2 of the coolest kids along the way. We came here to the island from Ft. Riley, KS, and let me tell you how much we don’t want to leave! I look forward to a prosperous military life and more adventures here on the island and with the Hui. Lexly Aloha Hui ‘O Na Wahine members. My name is Wendy Wright. I am the Hui Operating Treasurer for the 2014-2015 board year. This is my 3rd year as a member of the Hui. I served as the Scholarship and Welfare Treasurer last year. I have really enjoyed my time serving with all the other great members and I know this year is going to be another fun year. This is my second time living in Hawaii. I came out here for school and work when I was a much younger person. I met my husband a few years into my stay and somehow managed to be talked into leaving with him. We are back for another tour and enjoying our time here. We have 2 kids with 1 more on the way. I want to encourage all of you to get out there and explore this beautiful island. There are so many things to do here. So many places to eat here, I hope to see you at luncheons and some of the hui clubs this year. Debbie lives on Wheeler Army Airfield with her husband, her two teenage children, and her labradoodle. She is a clinical psychologist by training and has served on several boards in the past. Debbie has lived in Germany, Virginia, North Carolina, and Louisiana, with her favorite being Germany. She is an avid reader, hiker, and scrapbooker, and she is frequently seen at the gym. Debbie has been an active member of the Hui since arriving on island in July 2012 and is thankful to have met so many kind and dedicated people over the past 24 months. I am so excited about another year with the Hui Executive Board. Honestly, when I said I would be the Parliamentarian last year I had no idea what that would require. I was happily surprised by how much fun I had. When Shawna asked if I would do it again and said I could play with the microphone again I could not resist. Can’t wait to get the party started. Kat Fresh- Parliamentarian Hello there! My name is Sarah Nord, and this is my first time being on the Hui Board. I am the Activates and Hospitality chair and I'm so excited to get the word out about the wonderful clubs that Hui has to offer its members. If you have any suggestions or questions regarding clubs, send me a email [email protected] I am a small town farmer's daughter who never thought that that I would ever be living in Hawaii. I never even left my small town until I joined the Army. The Army was an amazing experience and it also lead me to meet my wonderful husband. We've been married almost three years now. I am currently in college for a degree in History and while I am not studying my butt off, you can find me either reading or playing games. If you see me out and around, feel free to say hello! If you are feeling hesitant about joining the Hui, know that a lot of us have been there. I would never have dreamed of joining in a million years, but here I am and I love it. The Hui is a great organization that helps the communities, lets you have some fun and meet some new ladies you might not otherwise get a chance to meet. So come on out and check us out, we have some amazing clubs and themed luncheons coming up this year and I would hate for you to miss out!! Aloha! I am Kathy Fox, your Community Outreach Liaison. This is my third year with the Hui, and the start of my 8th year on island. I have two blue-eyed girls who keep my laughing while my husband is spending some time in the Middle East. Are you prepared for a Hurricane? It is currently the middle of hurricane season here in Hawaii. Though landfall of a hurricane on the island is rare, it does happen. Even if it doesn’t make landfall, it can still create problems that everyone needs to be prepared for. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recommends you and your family prepare a basic disaster supply kit and have it available throughout the hurricane season.. The following are some recommended items to put in your kit: Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both Flashlight and extra batteries First aid kit Whistle to signal for help Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities Manual can opener for food Prescription medications and glasses Infant formula and Diapers Pet food and extra water for your pet Cash or traveler’s checks and change (no electricity = no ATM or cash register to run to.) The Hui Logo The Hui’s logo resembles a quilt pattern and incorporates many aspects of the origins of the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. At each corner is a taro leaf, representing the birthplace of the Division as well as the foundation of Hawaiian life: family, or `ohana. The lightning bolt within the taro leaves signify the lightning conquests the Division won throughout the Pacific during World War II. The Division patch, comprised of the taro leaf and the lightning bolt, faces out in the four cardinal directions and symbolizes the missions and deployments by the Division today, performed all over the world. The Pineapple, the universal symbol of hospitality and Aloha, is included between the taro leaves as a reminder of the enduring friendship between the Army and the Hawaiian people. At the center of the pattern is an eight-spoke cogged wheel that represents the U.S. Army, Hawaii’s eight major subordinate commands. The spokes surround the hub which is the U.S. Army Hawaii’s “H” patch, symbolic of all-encompassing support rendered the Division. It is also the core of our Army community, the foundation of our family support and includes our indispensable Army civilians. The entire design is surrounded by eight waves, symbolic of our island home. Reverence and respect for the ocean have been part of the Hawaii society dating back to ancient Polynesian voyagers. The eight waves tie together the eight islands that complete the state of Hawaii, just as they tie the 25th Infantry Division and the the U.S. Army Hawaii to the Hawaiian people. This exclusive quilt design has been reproduced in wood engravings, glass products, clothing and a variety of other items that are for sale by the Hui `O Na Wahine. We’ve had the logo printed, stitched, and etched on many different items, including golf shirts, T-Shirts, aprons, crystal, mugs, tote bags and more. We carry seasonal logo items too. Hui logo items can be purchased at monthly Hui luncheons and at the Thrift Store. Proceeds from the sale of Hui logo items are dispersed into the community through our Scholarships and Welfare Grants.
