Celebrando El Mes
América Latina – Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador,
Estados Unidos actualmente reclama herencia Hispana,
Celebrating National
Hispanic Heritage Month
The month long celebration begins in the
middle of September for good reason: five Latin
America countries Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador,
Honduras, and Nicaragua—officially proclaimed their
independence from Spain on September 15th, 1821
when each signed the Acta de Independencia (Act of
Independence).
Mexico and Chile had declared their
independence nearly ten years to the day earlier,
Mexico having done so on September 16th, 1810, Chile
doing so two days later on September 18th.
Fifteen percent of the US population currently
claims Hispanic heritage, making people of Hispanic
origin the nation’s largest ethnic minority. Hispanics
are the fastest-growing ethnic minority in the US, their
population having nearly doubled since 1990.
