Año 20, No. 1 Octubre del 2013 LA GACETA HISPANA UNA PUBLICACIÓN DE LA ASOCIACIÓN HISPANA DEL NORTE DE LA FLORIDA A PUBLICATION OF THE NORTH FLORIDA HISPANIC ASSOCIATION North Florida Hispanic Association Awards Program From left to right: Former President William Torres, scholarship winner Astrid Martinez, Secretary Eva Carrillo-Crowdis, Treasurer Alfredo Valdez, President Olga Castillo-Schmitz, and scholarship winner Stephanie Blanco. During Hispanic Heritage Month we recognize the contributions of two high school seniors with Hispanic ethnicity who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievements in all subjects and have been actively involved in our community by making a significant contribution through their leadership. Congratulations to Stephanie Blanco and Astrid Martinez who were awarded the academic scholarships for 2012 – 2013 year! Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month The month long celebration begins in the middle of September for good reason: five Latin America countries Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua—officially proclaimed their independence from Spain on September 15th, 1821 when each signed the Acta de Independencia (Act of Independence). Mexico and Chile had declared their independence nearly ten years to the day earlier, Mexico having done so on September 16th, 1810, Chile doing so two days later on September 18th. Fifteen percent of the US population currently claims Hispanic heritage, making people of Hispanic origin the nation’s largest ethnic minority. Hispanics are the fastest-growing ethnic minority in the US, their population having nearly doubled since 1990.
