But across the Hudson River, for the people of Morris, Passaic and Sussex Counties, the big news was the establishment of the Diocese of Paterson by Pope Pius XI. While many events in 1937 are just a distant memory, our Diocese continues to be a beacon of pride in our Catholic faith 75 years later. Mass Schedule Monday-Friday 7:00 AM, 11:45 AM Both celebrated in the Chapel. Saturday 5:00 PM, 7:00 PM Sunday 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 5:00 PM, 6:30 PM Rite of Reconciliation (Confessions) Saturday: 3:45 PM Confessions take place in the Church. Other times are available by appointment. We are a Church rooted in faith and tradition, yet constantly looking for ways to meet the challenges of today and plan for a better tomorrow. With that in mind, we have spent the last two years analyzing areas within our Diocese that we need to enhance and strengthen. These critical areas include: refocusing our Catholic Charities efforts in light of the economy, sustaining our parishes, maintaining our wonderful schools, repairing our Mother Church, St. John the Baptist Cathedral and providing ongoing support for the health care needs of our priests. Through Partners In Faith, you will have an opportunity to share in the mission of the Church in a profound way. This historic effort will include collaboration with priests, deacons, fellow parishioners, local religious orders and others dedicated to the future of the Diocese of Paterson. Our Parish Campaign Responding to the request of Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli, S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D., I am pleased to announce that we will be beginning the Partners In Faith campaign at this time. Our parish, along with 38 other parishes in Group Three, will build upon the success of the Model parishes, the Group One parishes, and the Group Two parishes. We will work together over the next few months to inform the parish family of the needs of our local parish and the future of the Diocese of Paterson. I hope that you will join with me and the others that have joined our efforts as volunteers and donors, to make this campaign a success! ~ Monsignor Mark Condon © Copyright 2013, The Angelus, Our Lady of the Holy Angels Church, Little Falls, NJ. T. Mark Condon PÙãÄÙÝ IÄ F®ã« E C D P K W This past Tuesday, September 17th, a group of volunteers from our parish met with Ms. Kate Wells, of Graham-Pelton Fundraising – Ms. Wells is our diocesan liaison for the campaign - to discuss our kick-off for the campaign. Once again, I want to express my thanks to Ms. Wells for her assistance and my enduring gra tude to the members of the Campaign Commi ee for their willingness to assist with this important project for our local Church of Paterson and our parish. As we kick-off this campaign this weekend I want to thank you for what you have done for our parish in the past and to once again express my gra tude for your never failing support of so many projects. I am conscious that in asking you to do more I am asking for a sacrifice that is not easy to make. As the volunteers and I start making our requests of you for a few moments to present the goals of the campaign and to let you know of the good work that it will accomplish, I ask for your characteris c openness of mind and heart. No one can do the impossible, no one can do everything, but everyone can do something to support this important work. Bishop Serratelli has been anxious to provide the means for parishes to be on a strong founda on for the future and to assure their vitality. Of course, a parish is much, much more than buildings and financial statements but as stewards of this parish we must a end to both the spiritual and the things of this world. The Bishop has been a great help to us in providing for our future by gran ng the permission for the Diocese of Paterson to pay off our ini al loan to the Knights of Columbus for our renova ons so that we now have a very, very low rate of interest with a diocesan loan which will be paid off in less than five years and make our parish completely debt free. The debt that the parish had carried for many, many years has been rolled into one payment with the original Knights of Columbus loan to the diocese each month – that is also a part of our debt re rement plan. Addi onally, the Bishop has significantly reduced our diocesan assessment since we have three priests to support. The Diocese has been a great help to us; this is an opportunity for us to make our contribu on to the Diocese of Paterson that does so much good work for the poor and also to further solidify the founda on of our own parish. On September 9th, volunteers from all over the Diocese of Paterson gathered at the Pope John Paul II Center in Cli on to meet with Bishop Serratelli as the third and final phase of the Partners in Faith Capital and Endowment Campaign begins; it was a large and enthusias c group comprised of city, suburban, and rural parishioners from Passaic, Morris, and Sussex Coun es. I am grateful to all those of our parish who responded affirma vely to my request to assist with this important moment in the life of our diocese and our parish. Those who par cipated in the first campaign mee ng heard Bishop Serratelli speak and present his ra onale for the campaign. The Bishop emphasized that the Church is by her nature evangelical because the Lord Jesus gave her the commission to call others to the divine life that he promises: “Go, therefore, make disciples of all na ons, bap ze them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Ma hew 28:19-20). As members of the Body of Christ we all have the commission to con nually help others know the life of Christ that the Church makes present and which she celebrates through listening to God’s word and celebra ng the sacraments, especially in the Eucharist and in Reconcilia on. The Church is intrinsic to God’s promise of salva on for all people and we all have the responsibility to strengthen the communion of the Church through our support of one another. All of us know that the Church has been and con nues to live through a difficult era; it is not an exaggera on to call it a shameful period but people con nue to be drawn to the Church because of the presence of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit that is present with us despite human failures. The Church con nues to grow and we are expanding rather than contrac ng. We need the hope of the gospel today more than ever. In a diocese in the southern most part of New Jersey, nearly half of its parishes were merged or closed. Thankfully that has not been the case in our own diocese. We remain a growing diocese and despite the fact that we are in a period when a great number of the priests who comprised the largest ordina on classes in the history of our diocese will be nearing re rement age we have also had a robust number of young men ordained in recent years. The Diocese of Paterson is growing and the Partners in Faith Capital and Endowment Campaign will permit us, with God’s help, to con nue on that path. The Partners in Faith Capital and Endowment Campaign will help to con nue to fund the great work of Catholic Chari es and support so many varied and important Catholic Ministries in our diocese. This is a great moment of hope for cemen ng a firm founda on for both our diocese, the local Church of Paterson, and our parish of Our Lady of the Holy Angels. Because the Partners in Faith Capital Campaign will be beginning soon, it will be a busy autumn for our parish. As summer draws to a close it is me for us to take our place alongside the other parishes of the Diocese of Paterson and begin our par cipa on in the PÙãÄÙÝ IÄ F®ã« C E C . Our work with the campaign will begin this month Continued on Page 5... Page 4 The Angelus www.holyangelscommunity.org Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4) and conclude before Christmas. Bishop Serratelli has set the ambi ous goal of 40 million dollars for a capital and endowment campaign for our diocese. As a vital member of this local church it is our privilege to be able to contribute to the vital ministries carried by the Diocese of Paterson while at the same me being able, through the same campaign, to a end to the important needs of our own parish. Many parishes have already concluded their par cipa on in the campaign and almost every one of those parishes have surpassed their goals by a fairly significant amount. I know that Our Lady of the Holy Angels Parish will also be proud of the contribu on that we make to this work of the local church. The Partners In Faith Campaign not only will help to support the good work of the Diocese of Paterson but will also be a help to our parish as a por on of what is pledged and fulfilled will be returned to the parish for our work here. Bishop Serratelli has pointed out on numerous occasions and in public se ngs that the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and this Partners In Faith Campaign is about the pastor more than anything else. In other words, the people of the parish need to be suppor ve of their pastor in order for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and this Partners In Faith Campaign to be successful. I have never been disappointed in the people of our parish and whenever I have come to you for help with important projects you have never failed to respond. This is a moment for our parish to work together toward an important goal just as we have in the past. In the days ahead I will be asking some of you to help me ac vely conduct this campaign. This is a worthy endeavor which helps the work of the Diocese of Paterson, especially Catholic Chari es, and it will help our parish. Our parish goal is almost 500,000 dollars. In our own Building on TradiƟon Campaign for the installa on of an elevator and renova on of our parish church we had over 930,000 dollars pledged and nearly 600,000 dollars of campaign pledges already fulfilled. I know we can and will meet our goal for the Partners In Faith Campaign. As we move forward at this important moment in the history of our parish, I ask most of all for your prayers not so much for the success of the campaign but that we may do God’s will and give praise and glory to him through all of our efforts. I commend this endeavor and all of you to the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Holy Angels. God bless you for your goodness and generosity. Here is some helpful informaƟon about the upcoming Partners In Faith Campaign: 1. What is Partners In Faith? Partners In Faith is a capital and endowment campaign designed to raise a minimum of $40 million in gi s and pledges payable over the next three to five years for the needs of the Diocese of Paterson and its parishes. To reach this goal, each parish has been assigned a financial target as its share of the $40 million goal. 2. Why do we need a major fundraising campaign? At the present me, the Diocese of Paterson operates with funds provided by the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, the assessment revenue provided by the parishes and the extraordinary income from sources such as investments, rental income and service fees. A comprehensive capital and endowment campaign is needed to con nue to support the extraordinary needs of our parishes and Catholic educa on, the special health care needs of our priests, the many good works of Catholic Chari es and the renova on and restora on needs of St. John the Bap st Cathedral. The 2013 Bishop’s Annual Appeal is also included in the campaign target. 3. Will the 2013 Bishop’s Annual Appeal be conducted? No separate campaign for the 2013 Bishop’s Annual Appeal will be conducted. However, $4 million from the diocesan campaign will be used to fund the 2013 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal will resume in 2014. 4. How is this campaign different from the Bishop’s Annual Appeal? The Partners In Faith Campaign seeks to address long-term and extraordinary needs, while the Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps fund the annual opera ng expenses of four dis nct diocesan ministries. An objec ve of Partners In Faith is to establish new, or augment exis ng endowments. A permanently restricted endowment fund is one in which the principal monies are invested and are not withdrawn. The annual distribu on earned from the endowments is used to fund ini a ves of the Church. Endowments, therefore, provide con nuous funding and enable the Church to be a responsible steward of its financial resources. 5. How is this campaign different from the Prepare the Way Campaign conducted in 2000? In every me, and especially mes of great need, Catholics are called to con nue to serve and care for others, evangelize and be a visible presence. The Partners In Faith Campaign responds to that call by addressing current priori es that are primarily different from Prepare the Way. Just as the Prepare the Way Campaign con nues to make an impact on people‘s lives through the case elements it promoted, Partners In Faith will expand the scope of our outreach with unique ini a ves that will benefit even more people through crea ve partnerships. The Angelus www.holyangelscommunity.org Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 5) 6. When will the campaign begin? Will pastors be kept informed of its progress? How? The campaign is currently underway, star ng with a comprehensive quiet leadership gi regular reports on progress will be sent to parish and lay leadership. phase. As the campaign progresses, 7. When will parishes par cipate in the campaign, and will parishes have a say in when they par cipate? When will the parishes be informed of these decisions? All parishes will conduct their campaigns as part of a “group” of parishes at some point between fall 2012 and the end of 2013. We will take into considera on a parish’s willingness to par cipate in a specific group. However, a campaign metable that is heavy with ac vity at the “back end” is not our plan. Parishes will be informed of their group far enough in advance to properly prepare for the campaign. 8. How will parish targets be set? In most diocesan campaigns, a parish’s goal is typically based on a percentage of its annual offertory income. We are adhering to a formula that is uniform for all parishes and based upon exis ng data rather than perceived poten al for support in a par cular parish. 9. Will parishes have an opportunity to appeal their targets? Yes. Recognizing that there may be a handful of unique circumstances in some parishes, the Pastors’ Advisory Commi ee may establish a subcommi ee to review requests for a goal reduc on. In the end, though, the targets are numbers to strive for and not assessments. 10. What share of dollars raised will parishes receive as rebates? Twenty-five percent (25%) of all funds received up to each parish’s target will be returned to that parish for its own individual needs; sixty percent (60%) will be returned on all monies received over a parish’s target. PARISH PARTICIPATION 11. How will parishioners be contacted in the Partners In Faith Campaign? In order for the Diocese of Paterson to raise a minimum of $40 million, each of the 111 parishes will conduct its own local fundraising campaign. Partners In Faith will be conducted in four phases commencing in September 2012 and concluding in January 2014. The Diocese hopes that each Catholic family will be visited or contacted by a fellow parishioner to explain the campaign and ask for his/her support. 12. How will Partners In Faith affect parish offertory? In the short-term, offertory is expected to remain constant. Through Partners In Faith, volunteers will ask parishioners to make extraordinary pledges above and beyond regular giving. Parishioners are not asked to lessen their giving to their parishes, but to consider more of a commitment to the Church. In the long-term, similar campaigns in other dioceses have actually caused increases in parish offertory through parishioners embracing stewardship as a way of life and strengthening their vision of the Church. 13. Will stewardship be incorporated into Partners In Faith? How? A capital campaign is an opportunity for stewardship. Through Partners In Faith, we seek sacrificial offerings of the financial blessings God has bestowed on us. It is important to realize that stewardship is an ongoing, lifelong endeavor to advance the mission of the Church. A capital campaign, however, is a brief and dis nct effort that seeks to address immediate needs. A capital campaign, therefore, can be a way for parishioners to begin to prac ce stewardship. 14. Why does Partners In Faith emphasize personal visits? Personal, face-to-face contact remains the single best way to raise funds. This method emphasizes the personal nature of giving, allows for a thorough presenta on of the statement of needs, gives poten al donors the opportunity to ask ques ons and allows volunteers to express their enthusiasm and reinforce their support for the campaign. 15. How will the shared funds be returned to the parishes? The funds are collected through a pledge redemp on process, tallied and held in a custodial fund. Parishes will receive their rebates annually. It is important to note that parishes will only receive shared funds on monies collected, not on pledges received. Continued on Page 9... The Angelus www.holyangelscommunity.org Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 7) 16. Who is the custodian of funds raised through the Partners In Faith Campaign? The Catholic Founda on of the Diocese of Paterson will be the custodian of funds. 17. How will current economic condi ons affect the campaign? The simple answer is that philanthropic giving na onwide has increased in every consecu ve year since it has been tracked. There have been five economic recessions since 1970; even through those, giving has increased. Recall that we tested a $60 million goal for the campaign; the recommended lower goal of $40 million does account for economic factors. M C Thank you for your generosity in last week’s maintenance collec on that helps us to a end to the repair of our parish buildings.
