Dear Campers and Parents,
Camp Hertko Hollow kicks off very soon and we are eagerly awaiting your
arrival! We have a lot of exciting things planned this year to make it better
than ever before. Some of the things you can look forward to are: having
fun, hiking, swimming, crafts, learning about the outdoors, and meeting new
friends who also have diabetes. Besides participating in all of the great
camp activities you will also learn more about diabetes, and will feel good
during your time with us.

Your schedule will likely be very different at camp than at home. You will be
*
eating differently, playing differently and maybe even sleeping at different P
times than you’re used to. This means that your blood sugar may also be
d
different than when you’re at home. The medical staff review blood sugars *
multiple times every day and also once during the night. If necessary we
c
may decide to change insulin doses during the week in an effort to keep
C
blood sugars between 100 and 240. We work hard to prevent very high,
W
and very low blood sugar levels. Please know that at camp we will always
be available to help our campers manage their diabetes and make decisions. M
M
Please help us by:
• Completing the daily log titled,
“WEEK BEFORE CAMP” prior to your arrival
and bringing it with you to registration.
• Writing down the insulin doses you use at home
so that you can return to those after camp is over.
• Letting us know if you are not feeling well.
It is important that you are healthy when you arrive at camp.
We are excited to spend the week with you, and look forward to seeing you soon!

Camp Mission Statement:
To provide an educational and recreational camping program for Iowa’s youth
between the ages of 6-17 who have diabetes. To promote diabetes management
skills to gain independence and a positive attitude for controlling the disease.
American Camp Association:
Both Camp Hertko Hollow and the Des Moines YMCA Camp have passed the strict
safety and operational standards from the American Camp Association and have
received accreditation. Together they provide a safe environment for all campers
regardless of race, religion, gender, creed, or special needs. www.acacamps.org
r Check-in/Check-out Procedures:
*Only authorized people will be allowed to pick up
w a camper. A person is authorized if his/her name is
listed on the authorization form. Please contact
our office to update this form if necessary.
*All persons authorized to pick up a camper must
show photo ID at the time of pick up. Campers will
not be released to anyone failing to show photo ID.
be
*All campers must be checked in and checked out.
Please visit the camp office if you are dropping off or picking up your camper
during an unscheduled time.
*Please check out your campers during the following times (late pick-ups tend to
cause anxiety in campers).
Check-In Schedule:
Week-long Session: Sunday 2:00pm – 3:30pm
s. Mini Camp 1: Sunday 2:00pm – 3:30pm
Mini Camp 2: Wednesday 2:00pm – 3:30pm
Check-Out Schedule:
Week-long Session: Saturday 9:00am – 10:00am
Mini Camp 1: Wednesday 9:00am – 10:00am
Mini Camp 2: Saturday 9:00am – 10:00am
Financial Assistance Policy:
Generous contributions from a variety of donors ensures that no one is
turned away due to an inability to pay.
Camp Staff:
The Hertko Hollow staff and Y Camp staff are carefully screened and
selected to ensure the safest environment and highest quality experience for your camper. Each staff member attends training that teaches camper
relations, safety awareness, and programming options. Y Camp staff are required
to have current certifications in CPR,
First Aid, and AED.
Zero Tolerance Policy and Discipline:
The Camp Hertko Hollow (CHH) staff have been trained to deal with inappropriate behavior in a constructive, safe and non-degrading fashion. Campers will be
held responsible for their actions in a positive manner. Camp reserves the right to
send a camper home at the parent’s expense if the camper’s behavior consistently
takes away from the experience of others or endangers
the safety of him/her or others. A camper will immediately
be sent home for incidents concerning violence or threats
of violence. If any camper chooses to tease or physically
confront another camper with the intent to cause harm,
the camper will be expelled from camp at the discretion of
the Summer Camp Director. Refunds will not be provided
to camp families for campers sent home due to discipline
reasons. Parents are responsible for transporting campers from camp, and are
expected to respond in a timely fashion.
Illness or Injury:
In the event that a child may become ill or injured in a manner that would require
a stay in the Good Health Center, or need further attention by a Health Care Provider, the child’s parents will be contacted. To prevent your camper from overheating during the week, water bottles are provided by CHH.
If your child has special needs that require specific attention,
please notify us. We will make all reasonable attempts to accommodate those needs; however, our staff is not trained to
handle all medical or psychological needs.
Medications:
All medications (including any over the counter medicines or
medications of a “take as needed” nature) must be turned into the CHH
Pharmacy Director during check-in. Medications are only distributed
during meal times and bedtimes. All medications must come in their
original bottles or packages. Prescription medications must contain
original prescription information. We encourage families to include only
enough medications for the week. Herbal supplements
should be left home if possible.
Head Check:
During check-in, Y staff will perform a head lice check.
This is necessary to ensure an outbreak will not happen at camp. If lice are found,
the camper will be sent home for treatment. Campers are welcome to return to
camp 24 hours later for another scalp check. Campers will not be admitted with a
positive scalp examination.
Health Screening:
Upon arrival at camp, parents will be asked to participate in a consultation with a
physician about the general health of your camper. Please be honest with all answers as the health and well-being of campers is first and foremost on our list of
priorities. Anything abnormal will be addressed privately with a camper’s family.
Parental Communication Policy
Camp Hertko Hollow will notify guardian(s) in such cases listed below by
the Camp Director, Medical Director or Medical Director’s designee…
o Camper requires glucagon for hypoglycemia, (exception being when we
administer mini-glucagon doses for non emergency cases of raising blood
sugar).
o Camper is going to be taken off-site for medical
care.
o Camper has been experiencing significant homesickness or behavioral challenges and the guardian’s
insight may help.
o In the very unlikely event that a major alteration in
the camper’s insulin regimen is considered necessary,
such as a change in type of insulin, number of
insulin injections or discontinuation of insulin pump.
o A decision has been made to dismiss a camper for any reason.
o Camper is diagnosed with an infectious disease, illness or
injury, that interferes with the camper’s ability to participate in normal
camping activities for a significant period of time.
If an event of a sensitive nature should occur that might attract media
attention and/or public concern, CHH and YMCA staff will review the event
and proceed to contact all CHH camper’s guardians with information
regarding the event. Examples of these types of events could include
serious staff or camper related accidents or illnesses, camp evacuation,
and/or early dismissal of camp session. In the unlikely event that this
would occur no personal camper or staff information would be released to
the public or discussed by CHH or Y Camp.
