Our mission is to assist and support people with disabilities in
discovering and implementing their personal goals in life.
From Mike and Bob
In 1978, six families set out to change the lives of their autistic children and offer them the dignity
that comes with having choices and being involved in their communities. Today, Adelante reaches
over 800 individuals with disabilities in New Mexico and employs nearly 1,000 people with a budget
of just over $26,000,000.
During the past 31 years, we have been part of enormous progress for people with disabilities. Our
programs and businesses continue to provide new opportunities for individuals to be empowered in
their communities through diverse experiences such as yoga, art, dance, animal therapy, horticultural
therapy, independent living, earning a paycheck and volunteering in the community.
In the past year, the threat of funding cuts has caused many providers to decrease services. Adelante held strong and was able to continue to offer the same level of services despite these concerns.
Additionally, we sought alternative ways to support our mission by diversifying income streams and
maximizing the impact of every dollar.
Our focus remains on providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to achieve their goals.
We have no doubt that with our collective courage, creativity and persistence, together we will provide a strong future for individuals with disabilities in New Mexico!

At Adelante we’re about creating opportunities for people with disabilities to grow and
thrive! We do this by offering a continuum
of services, which promote choice and inclusion opportunities for people with mental and
physical disabilities, so they can participate in
the community and remain as independent as
possible.
Our programs focus on health and wellness,
community outings, independence, volunteerism, social and learning activities—each
of which are an integral part of healthy and
active involvement in the community.
Whether working with a favorite animal or
discovering a hidden talent as a photographer, the opportunities are limitless.

Noelle is part of Adelante’s Arts
& Animals program, where she
experiences various types of art
mediums and interacts with
animals daily. She especially
enjoys taking part in training
assistance dogs, which is one
of the unique aspects of the
program.
We believe that these experiences enhance
the quality of life for everyone. That’s why we
continue to look for opportunities to incorporate new activities into our program offerings.

7
How do we define ourselves? We define
ourselves through many things in life—but
our job is perhaps one of the most important.
At Adelante we work to provide opportunities
for people to grow and thrive in vocational
environments. Our biggest reward is seeing
someone empowered by working in the community or working in one of Adelante’s Affirmative Enterprise Businesses.
Gene is employed in the
community. He serves snacks
to employees working in a
local office. Employment is
often key to an individual’s
independence, providing
financial stability, self-worth,
and personal empowerment.
In each case individuals learn job skills and
are given our support along the way. We
operate several affirmative businesses that
provide valuable services for local businesses,
while at the same time providing employment
for 321 people with disabilities. A variety of
employment opportunities are available in
those businesses. Each enterprise is located in
the community and Adelante operates them
while providing the vocational training and
support individuals need to succeed in their
jobs.

Through Adelante’s Employment Services
individuals are placed in jobs in the community and given the tools and support to maintain
successful employment. We work with local
businesses to create partnerships that foster
growth and opportunities for each individual
to see where their skills fit with a potential
employer. During the past fiscal year this program has placed nearly 100 individuals with
disabilities in jobs throughout our community.

At Adelante we are continually seeking new and
innovative ways to address needs in the community
and 2009 was no exception. As you wander through
the achievements below, know that we consider you a
part of our team that works together to achieve goals
and we look forward to growing with you in the future!
Marla is a Document Prep
Technician working at
Adelante’s newest enterprise
business, Document Imaging.
She helps prepare documents
to be scanned and converted
into an electronic format. She’s
helping provide an efficient,
environmentally friendly way
for companies to store their
records.
In 2009 we began ramping up for more green enterprises. Adelante’s first successful venture in providing
green jobs was with the document shredding business,
which today services over 1,167 locations statewide
and employs 58 individuals with disabilities. In 2009,
due to its astounding success and the need for full-service document management, the Document Imaging
business is the latest addition to the green jobs initiative. This business provides comprehensive, high-quality document scanning, indexing, sorting and storage
of electronic files for companies and government
organizations throughout New Mexico. We see great
synergy between the Document Imaging business
and the document shredding business because once
documents are scanned they need to be destroyed by
shredding.
Desert Harvest Food Rescue program received a
large grant from the PNM Foundation to aid in expanding the program in 2009. With this funding, as well as
funding from Domanica Foundation, General Mills and
Kiwanis Foundation, Desert Harvest nearly doubled
the amount of food rescued from 2008 to 2009 and
provided 968,483 meals to over 250,00 hungry New
Mexicans. Desert Harvest was started in 2001 to address two needs—to alleviate hunger in central New
Mexico and to provide volunteer opportunities for
people with disabilities.
Due to the growing need for services that support
the aging population, the new Seniors Program building was purchased in March of 2009. Set to open in the
summer of 2010, the new Seniors building will provide
the opportunity for Seniors with disabilities to stay
active in the community, socialize, dance, exercise and
many other activities that would be impossible without
a supportive environment.
the future
10
paying it
Through Adelante, program participants
join others in their community in the spirit
in contributing to others. They provide their
time, skills and passions. Volunteering is one
of the best means there is to naturally promote people getting to know each other,
appreciating and befriending each other,
and experiencing true belonging. This is why
Adelante offers a wide variety of volunteer
opportunities.
Desert Harvest Food Rescue is one of the
opportunities that is making huge strides
in reducing hunger in New Mexico. Other
volunteer opportunities such as those with
Albuquerque Meals on Wheels and Heartland
Hospice may encourage someone to design
and assemble flower arrangements for hospice patients or deliver meals to elderly who
are homebound.
No matter what the volunteer opportunity
is, or who the volunteer is, the experience is
the same—one of fulfillment, self-worth and
reward. Often along the way a friend or two is
made.
Volunteering is one of the best means there
is to naturally promote people getting to
know each other, appreciating and befriending each other, and experiencing true belonging. In 2009 Adelante program participants
volunteered over 7,315 hours!
11
Mike is a volunteer who
supports Creative Hands day
program participants two days
a week. Although Mike himself
suffers from MS, he doesn’t let
that stop him from giving
back. “I like to see a smile.
Interacting—that’s the most
rewarding,” he says.

volunteers fy 2008-2009
Adelante volunteers are an
integral part of our programs
and services, providing a
wide variety of contributions.
Whether on a short-term or a
long-term basis, every person
who donates time helps make
a difference in the lives of
people with disabilities.
Thank you to all the generous
volunteers who continue to
support Adelante and our
mission.
