-1- Welcome Sunshine Foundation friends, to our 5th Annual Dream Village Gala! It has been a rewarding yet sad year for the Sunshine Foundation. We are happy to be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Sunshine Foundation’s Dream Village; however, we are humbled and saddened to have lost Bill Sample, my husband. The man who founded not only the Sunshine Foundation, the original wish-granting organization, but also envisioned the Dream Village where children could stay in a magical oasis while having their dreams answered of visiting LEGOLAND, SeaWorld, Disney World and Universal Studios. During Sunshine Foundation’s 2014 fiscal year, we answered the dreams of 874 children and their family members, including visits to the Dream Village and the Central Florida theme parks, special gifts and trips, flying on a Dreamlift to the Magic Kingdom for the day, plus many, many more. Sunshine Foundation is proud to continue to be ranked as the only Top-Rated wish-granting organization for terminally ill or chronically ill children according to Charitywatch.org. The Sunshine Foundation is grateful to share that from our headquarters, we are a direct service organization expending 83% of the monies directly on answering the dreams of children with chronic life-long conditions. Answering the dreams of over 39,000 children, celebrating Sunshine Foundation’s 38th Anniversary, and our Dream Village’s 25th Anniversary is only possible because of the dedication of so many volunteers, donors and supporters who are here this evening. We appreciate the continued support of our precious DreamMakers along with our staff that strives to give exemplary service to our children and families. We are excited to be growing in humble remembrance of Bill and look forward to spreading Sunshine into the sweet lives of the children we serve. With over 360 children currently on Sunshine Foundation’s waiting list and the many children yet to reach out to, it is now more important than ever to continue to raise funding and awareness to help answer these children’s dreams! With gratitude and appreciation for your support, let us all together “See the Sunshine in Every Child!” Kate Sample President -2- Bill Sample,LHD Founder/President Emeritus, Sunshine Foundation December 2, 1935 – June 4, 2014 William Marshall Sample was born in Philadelphia, PA. Upon graduation from Olney High School, he enlisted in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After his service, Bill became a Philadelphia Police Officer. While serving on foot beat at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, Bill founded the Sunshine Foundation and made a wish come true for Bobby from Warminster, PA. This gift would become the first wish ever granted to a child with a life-threatening diagnosis. Following the publication of Reader’s Digest’s “The Cop Who Spreads Sunshine” and with the support of many, the Sunshine Foundation became the first wish-granting organization in the nation in 1976. Until this day, the Sunshine Foundation remains the only national wish-granting organization for children who have not just life-threatening illnesses but also children living with life-long severe chronic diagnoses, as well as trauma from abuse. Bill Sample always believed that every child should have at least one dream come true, and he dedicated the last 37 years of his life to this worthwhile cause. Upon realization that so many children wanted to visit the Central Florida theme parks, Bill found property and moved to Florida in 1989 to oversee construction of Sunshine Foundation’s Dream Village. As with granting a child’s wish, the Dream Village was a vision Bill had. He wanted to give the children who dreamed of fairy tales an enchanted village where they could spend their visit as if living in the forest and their own cottage with a magical theme. Bill also had the vision to see a Sunshine Foundation Dreamlift, a jet full of children with special needs and their care takers visiting a Central Florida theme park for a day. The first Dreamlift took place in the early 1980s, and since that first flight, over 93 Dreamlifts have flown thousands of children to Central Florida. Bill Sample was always proud of Sunshine Foundation’s work with the children who have the challenges of Progeria (Hutchinson Guilford Syndrome). He and the Sunshine Foundation began an Annual Progeria Reunion in 1982, which for 27 years would bring together all known children from throughout the world who were diagnosed with Progeria. The reunion allowed the children simply to spend a week together so they would not feel alone. With the support of many donors and volunteers, Bill set up the systems and procedures that continue to spread Sunshine into the lives of so many children, who along with their families, have daily struggles that many of us could never begin to understand. Bill had a heart the size of the universe that was most tender towards children, and most significantly, children with special healthcare needs. His legacy lives on through the seed he planted so very long ago. -3- Tonigt ’s Program Check In Silent Auction VIP Table Winner Chosen Introduction of Special Guests Dinner Entertainment Special Presentation Live Auction Dessert Dancing and Music Check Out -4- Your H ost The Daily Buzz is a syndicated morning news program that airs in over 175 TV markets across the United States. Most of the children we serve do not qualify for the other wish granting groups because they require a life-threatening medical condition. The children we answer dreams to have a life-long chronic condition and usually wish to visit the Central Florida theme parks when asked the simple question: “If you could have one dream, what would it be?” We fly the child and their immediate family to Orlando, all expenses paid, to enjoy a “once-in-a- lifetime” family vacation away from hospitals, therapies and medical treatments. They enjoy LEGOLAND Florida, SeaWorld, Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort, and then return to the Sunshine Foundation Dream Village to relax in their peaceful but magical cottage. Built 1988-1989, the Dream Village is nearby, only 3 miles from Reunion Resort with easy access to all major attractions. This 22-acre resort is nestled in a fairy tale setting and offers amenities and activities, all specially designed to be accessible for wheelchairs and other special needs. Each cottage has a unique and magical theme designed especially for children. We ask you to join us as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary and over 20,000 special children visiting the Dream Village! -14- Wa ys You Can H elp Adopt a Cottage at the Dream Village ($30,000) Adopt a Dream ($5,000) Designate Sunshine Foundation (In your employee or planned giving campaign) Donate Theme Park Tickets or Airline Miles Help with Improving Dream Village (grounds, décor, cottages, amenities) Organize your own Fundraiser (golf tournament, walk, poker run, % of sales) Purchase Dream Village Bricks ($100-$250) Spread Sunshine (“Like” us on facebook and share with friends) Support Events (attend, donate auction items, sponsor) Volunteer (office, grounds, events, airport greeter, advisory council, event committees, dreamlifts) Contact Rich Mergo or Wanda Curtis 863-424-4188 [email protected] -15- -16- Live A uction Hollywood California Trip for 2 3 Night Stay at Wyndham Anaheim 2 Round Trip Tickets on Spirit Donated by: Wyndham Vacation Ownership & Spirit Airlines Awesome Family Trip to LEGOLAND Florida Resort 1 Night Stay in a Themed Room at the New LEGOLAND Florida Hotel for “Opening Weekend” Summer 2015 Breakfast and Dinner, plus 4 Combo Tickets to LEGOLAND Florida and LEGOLAND Water Park $50 Gas Gift Card Donated by: LEGOLAND Florida Resort & RaceTrac Romantic Weekend Getaway to Historic St. Augustine 2 Night Stay at Grande Villas at World Golf Village Lighthouse and Museum tours $100 Gas Gift Card Donated by: Bluegreen Vacations, Lightner Museum, St. Augustine Lighthouse and RaceTrac -17- Th ank You to Our S ponsors 25th Anniversary Sponsors Golf Tournament Sponsor Premium Table Sponsors Table Sponsors Bardell Real Estate Jarrett Gordon Ford CenterState Bank Jedlinski Family Florida Technical College Melick Family Greenway Property Management Stewart Title Ingvaldsen/Widerberg Families Trustco Bank Friends of Sunshine Aegis Community Management Solutions J.
