Christmas Cantata – The Incarnation
Fourth Sunday of Advent
This Christmas Eve before midnight Mass at 11:15 p.m., the St. Norbert Choir will perform a Christmas Cantata ‐ The Incarnation by K. Lee Scott along with a variety of carols. All are invited to come and enter into the spirit of the feast and sing along with the choir, organ, and brass ensemble. In today’s first reading King David is settled in his cedar palace, no upcoming battles on the horizon, feeling quite content, glass of wine in hand, chatting with Nathan the prophet about how good life is, when he gets this inspiration: “God should have a house! Certainly more than that old tent we have been dragging around. And I will build it!” Nathan approves. But that night, God weighs in: “Tell David, ‘Thanks, but no thanks. I like the tent.’ ” We don’t know why God said no to David. But it seems that God wanted to make clear not only who was building God’s dwelling place but also who really was in charge of everything. God was the kingdom builder and God chose to work with very simple material, like a tent. But this was nothing compared to God’s decision a millennium later, on the day when the angel Gabriel was sent to a town of Galilee called Nazareth. God’s plan from the beginning was to take up residence among us closer than any building could be, whether it was as magnificent as Solomon’s temple or as humble as the simplest parish church. What God intended was to dwell with us as one of us, taking on human flesh and blood. And in the fullness of time God came asking if one of us would be willing. We don’t know how long it took for Mary to answer. We only remember the important thing: she said yes. —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. Catholics who have been away from fully practicing their faith, those who have questions, or those who would simply like to “jump start” their Catholic experience in the New Year, are invited to come on Tuesday evening, January 6, for a discussion on Being Catholic Today. The opportunity for questions about the faith or Catholic practice will be available, and together we will decide if there are some topics we would like to continue to discuss in more detail over the next few weeks. We will meet in the Ministry Center Library at 7:30 p.m. All adults welcome to attend. For more information, please contact Charlene at (714) 637‐4360 x114. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Buy Your Christmas Tree…
Benefit St. Norbert
If you plan to buy a fresh Christmas tree, please consider shopping at the tree lot next to Sears, at the Village of Orange. Just let the cashier know that you are from St. Norbert and the owner will donate 10% of the price of the tree to our parish. The lot is located in the parking lot of “The Village of Orange” next Sears at 2100 N. Tustin Street. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Parish Directories
They should be here now! Parish Directories were scheduled to be delivered last Friday. This bulletin was due at the printer before that day, so please listen carefully to the announcements for confirmation of delivery. Families and individuals who were photographed for the directory should pick up their Parish Directory at the Ministry Center office. We regret that we do not have extra copies for families who were not photographed for the directory. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Calendars
Thanks to the generosity of the office of Orange County Catholic Cemeteries, complimentary 2015 calendars will be available next weekend. These calendars provide information about the dates of the liturgical year, saints feasts, and holy days of obligation. The calendars are available in English and Spanish. The supply is limited, so we respectfully request that you take only one calendar per family. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Christian Service Food Distribution
To all of our faithful volunteers: We will NOT have Christian Service Food Distribution the Saturday after Christmas, December 27, and the Saturday after New Year’s, January 3. We will resume weekly food distribution on Saturday, January 10. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Weekly Parish Offering
Thank you for your continuing support of St. Norbert Parish. For the fiscal year July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015, our parish budget calls for $27,900 to be donated weekly at the Sunday collection. The collection for Sunday, December 14, will be reported next weekend. These collections are not only for operating expenses each week, but also for any ongoing repair work, upgrades, etc. to our parish facility. Your regular donations are needed for the good of St. Norbert Parish and the spread of the Gospel. 3

Help deck the hall … and
the church!
Lend a hand on Tuesday, December 23, as we prepare the church (at 9 a.m.) and the Family & Youth Center Gym (at 3 p.m.) for the Christmas liturgies. On Wednesday morning, we’ll get together again at 9 a.m. to add the finishing touches—poinsettias and the crèche. The Altar Care and Art and Environment ministries thank you in advance for being generous with your time during this busy season! Please call Joan Doyle at (714) 282‐1082 if you have any questions. _______________________________________________________________________ Show Your St. Norbert Hospitality this
Christmas!
As we begin our Christmas season, it’s a perfect time for us to show visitors and guests how welcoming we are as a Catholic community. Please keep in mind some of the following suggestions as you celebrate with your family, relatives from other cities, or friends. All are welcome and we hope everyone enjoys the hospitality of our St. Norbert family! Remember:  Scoot to the middle of the pew to allow late comers to sit perhaps on the end where you were. We can’t save seats when we have full Masses and we want to welcome everyone who joins us.  Christmas Eve Masses are very full and traffic is part of that picture. Drive with extra caution and be alert for young children stepping out between cars.  Try to get to Mass just a little earlier than normal to avoid being late and have enough time to enjoy the peace of the season.  Lock your car and don't leave any valuables inside, especially if visible.  During Mass, take that one extra moment to wish someone a “welcome” or “Merry Christmas” to brighten their Christmas season. We are a proud and happy parish – please show everyone you meet that we are truly a family of faith! Make it a very Merry Christmas for all. Our prayer group will NOT meet on December 23 and 30, but we welcome you to join us on Tuesday evening, January 6, when our weekly meetings resume in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 7:30 p.m. This weekly hour of prayer time utilizes varying prayer forms each week, including Lectio Divina, centering prayer, prayer of remembrance, Taizé prayer and Ignatian meditation. It is a time to meet with others in quiet and peace away from the busyness and noise of the world. ¡Felicidades!
Congratulations!

Faith Formation & Enrichment
R.C.I.A.
Wondering Why
RCIA will not meet on December 25 or January 1. We will resume sessions on Thursday, January 8 to discuss the Epiphany. Parishioners who are interested in any of the RCIA presentations or in sharing your faith with the RCIA community are always invited to join us for any session.
Two of the most familiar Catholic prayers that honor the Blessed Virgin Mary are found in the Gospel of Luke. When the Angel Gabriel appears to Mary to ask her if she will be the mother of the messiah, he addresses her with these words, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” (Lk 1:28). The second stanza of the prayer “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Lk 1:42) are the words that Mary’s cousin Elizabeth speaks when she hears the voice of Mary, and her own unborn child leaps for joy in recognition of the presence of the unborn savior. To these scriptural quotations, we add our own petition “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.” The title “Mother of God” (Theotokos – “God bearer”) was conferred upon Mary at the Council of Ephesus in the 4th century in response to a heresy that claimed that Jesus was not always divine. By stating dogmatically that Mary gave birth to one person, Jesus, who had both Divine and human nature, the Church reaffirmed the Divinity of Christ. The statement does not mean that Mary pre‐existed God, or was the mother of the Trinity; but that the Child she bore, Jesus, is indeed fully God, as well as being fully human. Just as it is always appropriate for Christians to pray for one another, we ask Mary, the first and most perfect disciple, who lives eternally with God, to pray for us in the present moment and at the time of our transition to eternal life. Anyone interested in beginning the process of becoming Catholic, or with questions about Catholic belief, is invited to come any Thursday at 7:30 p.m. to our Inquiry sessions. Inquiry is an open‐
ended small group discussion format designed to respond to questions or to begin a person’s faith journey toward Catholic sacraments. Topics are determined by the interests expressed in the group. _______________________________________________________________________ Bible Study
A new Bible Study on the Gospel of Mark will begin on Wednesday, January 7. This year’s liturgical cycle uses Mark’s Gospel, and this class will help to make the individual Sunday readings more meaningful. Both beginners to Bible Study and those with more experience are welcome. The series will consist of six sessions on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. We meet in the Ministry Center Library. Participants should bring their own Bible, and read Chapters 1 and 2 prior to the first meeting. As you read the opening chapters of Mark’s Gospels, notice what differences it has from the opening chapters of Matthew, Luke or John. From these opening chapters what do you think was Mark’s primary purpose in writing the Gospel? _______________________________________________________________________ Adult Confirmation
Baptized and practicing Catholics, 19 years and older who have not yet been confirmed, are invited to consider preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Preparation classes will be on Tuesday evenings beginning February 24, 2015, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ministry Center Library. Confirmation Candidates must have received their First Communion. Candidates who are married, must have celebrated their wedding in the Catholic Church. Anyone wishing to prepare for Confirmation must pre‐register before February 21, by calling Charlene at 637‐4360 x114. Each Confirmation Candidate will need a Catholic sponsor, who is confirmed and in good standing with the Church, and who is willing to participate in the weekly preparation sessions with the candidate. Confirmation will be celebrated on the Vigil of Pentecost, May 23, 2015. The other great Marian prayer, the Magnificat is found in Luke 1:46‐55, and is Mary’s response to Elizabeth’s greeting. In this beautiful and poetic piece, Mary echoes the words of Hannah in the First Book of Samuel who also praised God for giving her a child. Mary acknowledges her humility before God, and that God is indeed holy and has done great things for her. She reflects on God’s mercy and the Divine imperative to care for the poor and oppressed as part of the covenant established for God’s people since the time of Abraham. As we end the Advent season and approach Christmas let us take time to help the less fortunate, to reflect on the presence of God in our own lives, and in gratitude thank God for all the great things he has done for each of us.
—James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Derechos de autor © 2014, World Library Publications. Todos los derechos reservados. Directorio Parroquial

Living our Catholic faith is not something we just do on Sundays. In Matthew 28.19‐20, Jesus said, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all commands I have given you.” For those of us who work and live amid co‐workers, bosses and even neighbors who don’t share our Catholic view of life, the road can seem an uphill battle. How do we even hope to accomplish this task if we do not have an active prayer life or if we don’t make time for learning more about our faith? Marriage Encounter
We have very a very special Marriage Encounter weekend coming up in February for Valentine’s weekend. The dates will be February 13‐15, 2015. The weekend will put that spark and romance back in your marriage that may have gone out. This would be a wonderful way to spend your Valentine’s weekend together. For more information, please call Jim and Cheryl at (949) 551‐9156 or John and Maggie at (714) 873‐5136. You may also sign‐up at our website at ocwwme.org if you prefer. ________________________________________________________________________ Faustina:

Cursillo is the answer. Cursillo is an international movement in the Catholic Church. It has given thousands of Catholics a new attitude toward the daily challenges of this life. In three intense weekend days you will get the vision and direction you need to refocus your life and transform your environment for Christ. Given today’s fast‐
paced world with its demands and temptations, the idea of Cursillo makes sense as a powerful counter balance to become more firmly rooted in Christ. Cursillo weekends are conducted in Riverside at the Divine Word Retreat Center. The next Cursillo will begin on January 8, 2015 for men, and on January 15, 2015 for women. Learn more about Cursillo by visiting www.OCCURSILLO.org To get an application or more information on Cursillo, contact Ron Accornero, Cursillo Parish Rep, at (714) 396‐7295.
