These standards require, among other measures, that food preparation areas be “washed down” once during every manufacturing day. At the Ore-Ida plant, in Ft. Myers, Florida, where the popular frozen snack food products “Bagel Bites” are made, a daily four-hour production shutdown has been required. Each day, seventeen employees carefully clean with steam injected water and then work with mops and squeegees to dry the facility. “The cleaning process is taken very seriously,” said David Simkins, Cargocaire business development manager. “OreIda has its own internal sanitation regulations and the process is monitored by an onsite USDA inspector.” During third shift, the wash down begins with the production room temperature at 45 F. This cold air is so close to saturation that it cannot absorb the large amounts of water vapor being sprayed into the room. As a result, the spray precipitates out, immediately forming fog and condensation throughout the room. Once the wash down is completed, all equipment, walls and floors must be dry and free of any water or condensation. This drying is done due to the threat of contamination posed by moist, wet conditions, which can potentially promote pathogen growth. With humidity close to 100% RH during and after the wash down, the total time needed to dry the process area exceeded four hours. “At the Ore-Ida facility,” said Simkins, “there was a growing interest in shortening the lost production time, while maintaining strict, self-imposed sanitation standards. “Ore-Ida operations teams set out to find a process that would reduce the fog and condensation, while increasing operating efficiencies,” said Simkins. “It was through this search that they first considered desiccant dehumidification.” "Ore-Ida was enthusiastic about the desiccant dehumidification concept for addressing their fogging and condensation issues, but was reluctant to make the capital investment in a technology they had not previously used," said Galloway Munters Cargocaire convinced Bagel Bites to try desiccant dehumidification by renting a 9,000 scfm unit from MCS for a one month evaluation. Continued on Page 2 1 “New Ingredient” in Ore-Ida’s Bagel Bites Continued from Page 1 Following the first night of evaluation, Bagel Bites was convinced of the dehumidifier's capabilities and was ready to purchase its own equipment. Processing of the capital appropriation, manufacture of their permanent dehumidifier and installation would take 11 weeks. During which time Bagel Bites decided to retain the rental unit. "Due to the overall effectiveness of the system, we weren't willing to give up the rental equipment until the permanent unit was installed and running," said Sam Casey, manufacturing manager for Bagel Bites. "The overall benefits of improved sanitation and safety far outweighed the rental costs." Installation in the processing area was straightforward. Conventional, ceiling mounted evaporator coils provide cooling to the area at 45°F. Dehumidification is handled independently by the Cargocaire dehumidifier mounted outside the building adjacent to the processing area. The dehumidifier processes 9,000 scfm, delivering dry air conditions of 77 F at 4% RH. The cooling units operate in response to a thermostatic control. A humidistat holds the room to 65%RH, an appropriate level to prevent condensation and fog while also meeting food production specifications. Along with eliminating the fog and condensation, Bagel Bites has found that their dehumidifier purchase has benefits that reach beyond the processing area. Several process freezers, located inside the dehumidified area, have realized a significant reduction in both frost accumulation and defrost cycles. "Because the moisture is removed from the air, it does not accumulate as quickly on the evaporator coils and inside the freezer," said Victor Herbert, maintenance supervisor for Bagel Bites. "That means the energy-consuming defrost cycles have been shortened, and the interval between them stretched out."● You May Be an Engineer If… 1. The Neptronic GP includes a self-adjustment feature, which enables each valve to be continuously self-balancing. This ensures delivery of precise flow rate required by each terminal unit, independently of pressure fluctuations in the hydronic system, providing balancing at any point at and below the maximum flow rate. Each valve has an adjustable maximum flow rate setting to enable flow limitation at maximum input control signal. The maximum flow rate is set by a combination of dip switches in the actuator. The flow can then be modulated between the maximum flow setting and shut-off by varying the input control signal. Function On close examination of the inner workings of Neptronic GP, the function is best described as two valves in one. The first valve regulates the pressure differential across the second valve by means of a rolling diaphragm element counter activated by a helical coil spring. The second valve is a calibrated variable orifice device adjusted by the actuator (similar to a standard-modulation control valve). The total flow rate through the valve is determined by the combination of orifice areas in the pressure differential regulation unit and the actuatordriven variable orifice. ● 2 APC Power & Air Aids Consolidation, Cuts Costs at BE Aerospace Data Center “We are the world's leading manufacturer of cabin interior products for commercial aircraft and business jets and a leading aftermarket distributor of aerospace fasteners. We also provide aircraft cabin interior design, reconfiguration and passenger-to-freighter conversion services to the world’s leading airlines. “Our installed base of products on aircraft currently in service is valued at approximately $5 billion. We have manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and Europe and employ in the vicinity of 3600 individuals. “Compared to some of APC’s precision air competitors, the APC NetworkAIR™ cost less and has a much faster delivery time.” Data Center Consolidation Presents Challenges “Recently we made a strategic move to cut costs by insourcing our data center. We also decided to consolidate 20 smaller distributed data centers into one location, our Commercial Aircraft Products group headquarters in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. “This consolidation project presented us with a number of challenges. First we had to come up with an industrial-strength cooling, ventilation and power solution. Second, we knew that our existing raised floor was not high enough to run the cabling we thought we would need for the consolidated data center. We needed to switch to overhead air distribution and overhead power cabling. We wanted to maintain high availability for our end users, even if we lost power. Evan Stewart, CIO BE Aerospace Phoenix Controls to offer Wireless Sash Sensor Designed for horizontal and combination sashes, this new patent-pending product eliminates the need for exposed wiring. It uses a radio frequency transmitter and a receiver to detect, calculate and communicate sash position in less than 1 second. It functions with the Phoenix Controls fume hood monitor and exhaust valve to produce a fast-acting system to capture and contain noxious fumes. Flexible Power Solution Wins the Day “In our search for a new power solution, we first looked at some of the traditional ‘fixed’ 3-phase offerings. We were very limited by these large UPSs because their fundamental design made it impossible to right size for our current needs. We would have had to pay for significant excess capacity up front. In addition, these traditional solutions placed constraints on us from both a maintenance overhead and a data center floor space point of view. “Our electrical contractor recommended that we look at the new APC InfraStruXure™ as a possible solution. Upon closer inspection, it became apparent to us that the flexibility of the InfraStruXure architecture would make all of the layout planning and installation of cabling and wiring much easier. “We were also impressed with the InfraStruXure’s ability to scale. We were able to buy only the power capacity we needed to get started and had the flexibility to grow whenever we felt we needed to. “Another significant plus with the InfraStruXure solution was our ability to manage the power not only to the rack level, but also to the plug level. The racks also make it a very physically attractive solution as the cables are run up through the rack and into troughs on top of the racks. We have no ugly cables hanging down and no unmanageable cable mess under our floors. Key Features • Eliminates unsightly wires • Retrofit existing hoods • Compatible with horizontal or combination sashes • Easy installation • FCC compliant • AC or DC powered APC NetworkAIR™: High Quality Cooling at Competitive Cost “We also decided to purchase the APC NetworkAIR™ to handle our precision air requirements. The NetworkAIR units are high quality. Compared to some of APC’s precision air competitors, the APC NetworkAIR cost less and has a much faster delivery time. In addition, it was much easier for us to deal with one vendor to integrate the data center solution and we felt we would get better support from APC. “We figure that our consolidation project has contributed significantly to our cost reduction efforts. APC InfraStruXure and NetworkAIR are key components which have helped us to realize these savings.”● 3 Air Equipment Company PO Box 3185 Louisville, KY 40201-3185 For more information….
