Hudson Bagel & Coffee Co Carmichael & Vine 800 Carmichael Road Hudson, WI 54016 February, 2014 Return Service Requested Picky Eaters We all have noticed them from time to time. Turns out they’re real. 1 in 4 is a “Super Taster.” These folks have more taste buds which results in a heightened sense of taste. This ‘condition’ occurs more frequently in women than men. It seems they also eat fewer leafy greens & are averse to fats. Ghost Ships apparently do exist. You may have heard about the Lyubov Orlova that has been floating around in the North Atlantic. This is a 300 ft Yugoslavia-built ship (in ‘76), named after a Russian film star, & used for cruises in the Antarctic. The crew abandoned ship when it was impounded in Newfounland in 2010 for unpaid debts. The Canadian government was having it towed to the Dominic Republic for scrap when it broke loose in heavy North Atlantic seas. While it is certain no people are aboard, the rat population have been running the show. Landfall is expected in the British Isles … sometime. Or maybe, it will find the The Big Sleep You may wish you could hibernate this time of year & would be better off. But, the research guys say it’s actually very complex; an adaptation to the anticipation of famine; avoiding the stresses of hunger & bad weather, they live longer; & it’s much more than just taking a long snooze. The artic ground squirrel can survive 3 weeks at 22’ (heck we all can do that!). The turtle can freeze solid, thaw, & survive w/o damaging organs or tissue. Research can stop a hibernating squirrel’s heart for 45 minutes w/o damage. Black bears don’t even have to go to the ’john’. Hibernators show no bone loss, little loss in muscle mass/strength, & maintain skeletal mobility. In short, they are built to take the long nap, & you’re Phantom Islands apparently don’t exist. Seems an island in the Coral Sea, East of Australia has been mistakenly drawn into charts & maps since the 1880s. (just goes to show ... keep a sharp eye on that “copy & paste” technique). While it escaped satellite imaging, a Nat’l Geographic reader in 2000 suggested it may not be there, Finally in ‘12 an Australian science team passing the area confirmed there was no Sandy Island. They figure there are other phantoms out there. Fill ‘er up! Jim, the new guy in the office, was sent out for coffee. At the neighborhood coffee shop he asked the barista if his thermos would hold 6 cups of coffee for his co-workers? The barista thought it would. “Great”, said Jim. “Give me two cups with cream & sugar, two cups of breakfast blend, & two cups of decaf.” Shed a Pound? According to the National Pet Obesity Survey, more than 50% percent of cats & dogs in the U.S. are overweight. Pets aren’t the only members of the animal kingdom who could stand to lose a little weight. A research team tracking animals used for study in research facilities found that male & female chimps grew plumper between 1985 & 2005, with males experiencing an average weight gain of 33% & females an average of 37%, increasing their odds of obesity more than tenfold. Reasons behind the weight gain include use of sugary foods as a reward for good behavior, as well as lack of exercise due to the fact that research animals don’t have to search for food as vigorously as they do in the wild ... or at home. General Mills announced that Cheerios, (the original flavor) will be made w/o GMOs. That’s “genetically modified materials” to you. They can do this cause the main thing is oats. No GMO oats. Everyone chats a little at work, but don’t let your friendly conversations overshadow your responsibilities. Stay focused on your job. • Keep private issues private. When you have problems to discuss, do it over lunch or after work. You don’t want to make your co-workers privy to your personal dramas, & they probably don’t want to listen to them either. • Avoid gossip. Most of us love to talk about other people, but keep your inclination to share rumors about co-workers or managers in check. If colleagues realize you’re gossiping about them, a backlash could be unpleasant • Don’t do each other’s jobs. Pitching in to help a friend in a crunch is admirable, but keep to a reasonable limit. Your manager is in charge of assignments & responsibilities, not you. You don’t want to spend so much time helping a friend do his or her job that you neglect your own. More formally, Russian Thistle, Eurasian, sneaked in ~150 years ago. No leaves, just small spiny scales. They can get as big as a car. They have been sung about: “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” by Gene Autry. They have been made into snowmen, Christmas trees, storefront displays, & used in plays. They are prolific & can be ignited in an instant … contributors to those raging brush fires out West. After nuclear testing stopped at the Nevada Test Site, it was the first thing to grow back. You can purchase your own from a company that sells & ships tumbleweeds - to Odds & Ends - China has more on-line shoppers than there are people in the U.S. - The Navy is working on submersible drones. Which will track ocean temps & currents, as well as detect other subs or minefields; they then surface & transmit their findings. - Personal Computer unit sales are on the down swing being replaced by smartphones & tablets. - The Earth’s perihelion & the Moon’s perigee. Huh! occurred last month where the Earth was at its closest point to the Sun & the Moon. The result is high tides when the Gforces are at their peak, coastal areas may flood, & the surf’s up!
