The Highland and jazz dancing classes
recently started by dance teacher Amanda
Ruemenapf (nee Goodman) are proving very
popular with Geraldine students. Thirteen
dance-crazy girls attended Amanda’s winter
workshop held in the first week of the July
school holidays.
The oldest student in the winter workshop
was Marly Keet (18). Marly has been dancing
she was five and is “loving” dance

lessons with Amanda. “She makes it so much
fun and she is really encouraging; you look
forward to going to dance all week.”
The youngest student was Violet Adams (4)
who says she likes to dance, especially with
her friends Millie and Ruby. “I want to do
Highland dancing [when I grow up].”
Amanda brought in two family members
from Christchurch to help her run the
workshop. Her cousin Laura Hasson took the
jazz class and sister Hayley Goodman taught
drama and crafts. At the end of the one-day
workshop the students entertained residents
at Geraldine Retirement Village with their
dance routines.
Amanda lives in Timaru where she also
teaches dance. She felt there was a call for
dance classes in Geraldine but the demand
has exceeded her expectations.
“I never thought it would get this big; I
thought I would get around 10 but now I
have 65 on the Geraldine role – it is definitely
all go.”
Amanda also teaches stage confidence,
offers students the opportunity to take exams
and perform in competitions and an end-ofyear recital.

Highland dancing has taken Amanda all
around the world. She danced at the 2002
Virginia Military Tattoo in the US and in 2010
was part of the New Zealand team dancing
at the Edinburgh Tattoo.

Volunteers sought to advance
new mountain-bike tracks
The Geraldine Track Committee has
gained permission from Timaru District
Council to establish new mountain-biking
tracks for future users. By summer, the Lions
are hoping to have established some single
tracks for bikers on the south side of Vance
Road, near Orari.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the support
of the district council,” says committee
member Allan Kelly.
The council granted permission and
gave full support to the group of dedicated
mountain-biking members, who had the
idea of utilising a newly laid plantation as a
single track. The committee met last week
to mark a track around the perimeter of the
plantation.
Last year, the Lions Club held a public
meeting to guage interest in the wider
community. The forum generated a great
response from community members who
gave time and support to the group. This
resulted in upgrades of the current tracks up
both sides of the Orari River bed to a standard
fit for mountain biking.
Currently the Geraldine Track committee,
established 12 months ago, has four Lions
Club members and four community members
who work together to maintain the upgraded
tracks so they can
remain open and safe
for public use.

Following the successful Shed Series,
the Geraldine Academy of Performance &
Arts will present Parlour Series, featuring
Burlesque Baby...Maybe.
“This series aims to provide an
interesting and creative platform for
anyone who has never dreamt that they
might be able to do performance,” says
Academy co-ordinator Gretchen Gould.
“They might have a secret desire to strut
their stuff on stage but never thought
that it was ever possible. Cathy Alison is
the ideal tutor because she encourages
confidence and provides the skills to reach
out and have fun. It’s a pretty intensive
series and ... is interesting to explore.”
The series runs Sundays 9 and 16
August with a final private performance at
The Country Café on Tuesday 18 August.

theme, including the costuming, and in
groups present a small slice of burlesque
being led by the amazing Cathy,” says

is a new Incredible Edible
Geraldine initiative, where
Geraldine people have the
opportunity to dedicate a fruit
or nut tree to a fellow local
who has lived, or is living,
a fruitful life. The trees are
planted in public spaces with
the produce being available
for all to share.
The scheme has an online interactive Edible Trail
on Incredible Edibles’ new
website.
“It’s hoped people will log
on before going for a walk to
learn a little more about the
wonderful talent we have
here,” says Incredible Edible
chair Sam Lees.
The first three trees were
planted with the help of
those people who had a tree
dedicated to them. The first
tree, an espaliered braeburn
apple was planted along Brian
Stephens’ fence opposite the
Geraldine Primary School.

The Edible Trail is a new interactive on-line map embedded

Rental housing in Geraldine
Part one: The landlord’s story
While Aucklanders recently woke to a brisk 1°C start,
the Geraldine district has been shivering in sub-zero
temperatures. Heat pumps have been cranking, fires stoked
and curtains opened to welcome the paltry winter sun before
hasty closures as dusk approaches.
The World Health Organisation recommends houses are
heated to a minimum of 18°C, preferably 21°C if young
children or elderly folk are present. However, the average
daily indoor winter temperature in New Zealand is just
16°C.
New Zealand houses are hard to heat as many of our
homes were built prior to 1978 when the New Zealand
Building Code introduced minimum insulation standards.
Even Auckland’s comparatively balmy winter temperatures
make adequate heating challenging, and the result is a
population at risk of respiratory illness.
Combine cold, damp houses with lower incomes and the
threat of respiratory-related deaths, such as that of Auckland
toddler and Housing New Zealand tenant Emma-Lita Bourne,
can become reality. So where does Geraldine sit in this picture
and how might Government initiatives to improve rental
properties affect our town?
A 2014 report published by the University of Otago and the
New Zealand Green Building Council, in collaboration with
the councils of Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch
and Dunedin, states that 92 per cent of homes tested in a
rental property warrant of fitness trial would fail. Thirty per
cent of rental properties throughout New Zealand lack smoke
alarms and 37 per cent do not have a fixed form of heating.
While the government is opposed to a warrant of fitness for
rental properties, as proposed by the Green Party, all tenanted
houses throughout New Zealand will require underfloor
and ceiling insulation by mid-2019. In many cases this will
require retro-fitting at a cost of approximately $3000 for an
average-sized three-bedroom house. Landlords will also need
to install working smoke alarms by next year.
One Geraldine landlord, who owns two rental properties
says: “I am actually not that opposed as I do think it is a good
way to ensure a lot of the more vulnerable are in warmer
houses. There are some landlords who are happy to profit
from people living in terrible conditions and hopefully this
might make some of them make improvements.” However,
she “would like to know how it is going to be policed”.
While this landlord thinks the cost of insulating her
properties may be passed onto the tenancy, it will “depend
on the situation. If a tenant has been in place for a long time
and is due a rent increase, a proportion of the cost may be
passed on. If getting new tenants, I imagine rent would be
adjusted.”
She will also be investigating whether her tenants qualify
her houses for free insulation. Houses may qualify if the
tenants have a Community Services Card or there are children
under 17 or adults over 65 with high health needs.
And the winning recipe is...
Mushroom and Garlic Soup
300 gm mushrooms
1 large onion, diced
2 cloves garlic
75 gm butter
approx ½ cup flour (just use enough to soak up
butter)
500 ml milk
500 ml chicken stock
splash of port
salt and pepper
• Melt butter in a saucepan and sauté the onions and
garlic till clear.
• Add the chopped mushrooms and cook until they are
soft and liquidy.
• Add flour then slowly add the milk and stock until all
is added.
• When boiling add port and salt and pepper.
Changes to regulations mean that landlords must make sure their
tenants live in properties that are adequately insulated. They must
also have working smoke alarms.
In spite of the likely expense, she is focusing on the
positives. “I think landlords need to remember the insulation
could potentially add value to your house. There is the benefit
of a warmer, dryer house and therefore less dampness and
deterioration.”
Currently, she is focusing on assessing the level of
insulation installed in her rental properties. “We are not
sure if the houses are insulated or not, which is something
we are going to have to investigate because from July 2016
you need to state the level of insulation on any new tenancy
agreements.” In some instances, houses will be exempt
from compulsory retro-fitting where floor or ceiling space
is insufficient.
The new requirement for tenanted properties to have
working smoke alarms installed sees this landlord ahead of
the game. “They are a must in our rental houses. We do not
want anyone’s death on our conscience for the sake of a $20
to $30 alarm.” She “hopes that tenants will keep replacing
batteries” and refers to “a couple of times” when she has
discovered alarms with the batteries removed.
“We have always treated our tenants with respect and
have not been authoritative. I think, in return, our tenants
have always been respectful towards us.” She says that if
tenants are happy “they are far more likely to look after the
property”.
This landlord aims to provide sound properties and foster
positive relationships with her tenants. However, is she typical
of Geraldine landlords? Next time: The tenant’s voice.

Driving school offers local service
A new business, Goody’s
Driving School, has just
started in Geraldine and
owner James Goodman says,
“I absolutely love teaching.
It’s the fact that they start off
nervous and by the end of
the lesson they have learned
something; it’s great to be able
to see their improvement.”
James believes learner
drivers can learn 90 per cent
of what they need to know to
pass their restricted test right
here in Geraldine.
“There is quite a bit of
traffic in the day to get used
to. You don’t want to start
in a busy street if you are
learning in a manual car; the
quieter the better.”
A short while before a
learner is ready to take the
restricted test, James gives
them a few lessons in Timaru
to complete their driving
skills. Lessons are offered in
James’ dual-control manual

automatic. He is willing to
collect students from school
and drop them off at home
after the lesson, or vice
versa. He also offers driving
assessments, senior refresher
courses and free after-licence
advice.

is a new venture for James.
Three months ago he was
in the Royal New Zealand
Air Force where he spent
about 30 years working in
composites: the fibreglass
repair of aircraft and
maintenance. He also had a
spell working at the Services
Corrective Establishment, a
detention centre for army,
navy and air force staff at
Burnham Army Camp near
Christchurch.
“I looked after servicemen
who had stepped off the
rails.”
James learned teaching
skills in the air force and
decided to use that knowledge
to teach driving. He moved
to Geraldine two years ago
with his wife Paula. They had
driven through Geraldine
many times on the way from
Christchurch to their bach
in Burkes Pass, where James
comes from.
“We used to stop in
Geraldine for coffee and
always liked the look of it.”

Geraldine residents Cath Horrell and Alan Averis attended
the Geraldine Community Board meeting held on 8 July and
spoke in the public forum.
Kennedy Park Motorhome Park. Cath Horrell from
Geraldine Holiday Park spoke to the board regarding the
proposal to allow members of the New Zealand Motor
Caravan Association (NZMCA) to park in Kennedy Park. She
said while motorpark owners “were not opposed to freedom
parking ... we’re not in favour of them being placed in an
urban area”. As a NZMCA member herself, she said she is
skeptical of assurances that campers spend money in the
town. She reported that motorparks had seen numbers of
campers in their parks “dramatically drop” as a consequence
of allowing freedom camping in the vicinity, and that there are
many more suitable sites around Geraldine where freedom
camping is allowed. “We respect that everyone has a free
choice. We’re not afraid of competition but we feel we should
be on an even playing field,” she said.
The board received a report from Timaru District Council
(TDC) parks and recreation manager, Bill Steans, on a sixmonth trial regarding overnight parking of self-contained
motorhomes in Kennedy Park. Board Chair Wayne O’Donnell
explained that NZMCA approached the council regarding
Geraldine being promoted as a “Motorhome Friendly
Town”. According to the report, the “possibility…exists for
Geraldine’s economy to further benefit from additional nights
spent in town by visitors” and “no complaints were received
from owners or occupiers of neighbouring properties”, during
the trial period. The only objection received was from the
operators of the Geraldine Motor Camp.
McGregor Simpson expressed concern over the possibility
of clashes between locals returning from the pub and
campervan owners. “It’s a dark place and there have been
several serious assaults over the years.”
The board recommended that overnight parking of
campervans and motorhomes be permitted in the designated
site at Kennedy Park, under the following conditions: a
maximum of six vehicles at any time on a first-come basis;
a maximum of three nights’ stay for any vehicle and current
self-containment certificates are displayed. The board will
revisit the matter if any concerns arise.
Kowhai Stream Ford, Blandswood Road. Long-time
Blandswood resident, Alan Averis, spoke to the board about
the ford on Blandswood Road, Peel Forest. Mr Averis has been
visiting the area since 1948 and remembers the 1975 flood
which washed the original bridge away. He told the board
that NZ Post have stopped delivering post to households at
the end of Blandswood Road as they were unable to cross
the ford, and that nine households are under threat of being
“completely isolated” should there be a future flood event in
the area. He said the council had made “half-hearted efforts”
to grade the area and put in concrete crossings a couple of
times but “without steel and substance they continually get
washed out”. Mr Averis said council’s response time to flood
events was inadequate as, despite their assurances it could
take a maximum of three days, he said it sometimes took as
long as two weeks for a contractor to come out. He said he
had towed the rubbish truck out of the stream twice and cited
instances where visitors had attempted to cross the flooded
stream on foot when unable to get their cars across. “All it
would take is a log or a boulder to come down and hit their leg
and they’d be knocked off their feet and gone downstream.
The time has come for something decent to be done.”
Board members were concerned over the conditions of the
ford, but advised the matter could take some time to address
as a permanent structure would cost “tens or hundreds of
thousands of dollars” and would need to be budgeted and
planned, which could take up to a year. Cr Stevens said a
written report is needed for the community board to make
a recommendation to the district services committee. The
board recommended a roading report be prepared outlining
costs and options of a permanent structure for vehicle and
pedestrian crossing. Cr Stevens said he would discuss the
responsiveness for urgent maintenance of the ford crossing
with council staff at the roading meeting.
Naming of reserve. The board considered Mr Steans’
report on the naming of the reserve and council land at Pit
Road in the Cooper’s Creek area, to Oliver Dryland Reserve;
reflecting the purpose of the site and acknowledging former
councillor Michael Oliver’s contribution. Cr Oliver lived
and farmed in the vicinity for many years and was an avid
supporter of the reserve being developed as a lizard habitat
and of the preservation of indigenous plants and invertebrate
species there. The board unanimously recommended to
the community development committee that the reserve be
named the Oliver Dryland Reserve.
