SCHOOL NEWS
DEAR PARENTS
Welcome to a new term, the 2nd of the
year. This one is a power-packed 9
weeks with our triannual Whole School
Production in the middle.
Please keep a close eye on the pink
parent calendar that went home last
week. As events draw near, a notice
usually goes home to explain details if
necessary.
This week we have had the Public Health
Nurse talking to all Junior classes about
being sneeze-safe. This is a National
initiative – you may have seen a clip on
the TV news recently. Glitter, infa-red
lights and glow glue were components to
help children see if they still had germs
after hand washing. Thanks Claire
Neilson, our PHN, for delivering the
lessons.
Last week I had a few days at the South
Canterbury Principals’ conference, held
at Aoraki Mt Cook. A very inspiring time
listening to amazing speakers, such as
Mark Inglis and Rob Hammill, and having
opportunities to network with other
Principals.
We have Alice Johnston starting with us
this term. Please familiarise yourself with
the letter further on in the newsletter with
regards to Alice.
Looking forward to a great term.

ANZAC DAY
Thanks to those for attending our
ANZAC day service.
We received very
positive
comments
which were lovely to
hear. Geordie did a
fantastic job of his
speech, supported by Lexie holding
the props. Great picture on the front
page of the Timaru Herald too. Each
class also made a special large
poster about ANZAC day. These
looked fabulous along the wall.
Thanks children and teachers for
your valuable contributions. Thanks
Mr McKerracher and Rimu for the
moving Powerpoint show.

SWEDES SWEDES SWEDES
FIRST AID COURSE
It’s time for our popular and lucrative
swede fund raiser again, and once more
we are looking for some volunteers to
share the workload. We ask helpers to
keep the swede cart at A&M Motors
stocked with swedes for 1
week. This generally takes
less than half an hour, 2 or 3
times during the week, and
can be done at any times
that suit you. If you are able to help out,
please ring Kirsty on 6155061, or leave
your name at the school office. Thank
you.
We are having our bi annual first aid
course here on Saturday 30th
August. This will be run by Meditrain.
There will be a half day refresher at a
cost of $88.20 and a full day course
at a cost of $157.50. We are opening

our
community to attend if
they wish.
Please

POOL
The pool has been emptied for a
short time for the contractor to
complete a few odd jobs, then the
pool will be filled again and
“winterising procedures” will be
carried out to maintain the pool by
our Caretaker, Clive Scott.
BIG THANKS to Doug Cotter for the
loan of his submersible pump to
empty the pool, and clean it up so the
work can be done. Much appreciated
by Clive and all of us.
VESTS
It is a good idea to assist your child to
put their VEST IN THEIR SCHOOL
BAG when they get home. Very
seldom do children forget to bring
their bag to school. Therefore the
chances of leaving their vest at home
will be very unlikely if it is in their
school bag.

Dear Parents/Guardians
Alice Johnston will be starting at Winchester Rural School this term. She had a liver transplant in 2009. She is healthy and active and
can participate in all activities along with your son or daughter. However some of the medications that she has to take to prevent
her body from rejecting her liver also weaken her immune system and makes her more susceptible to infections. When she gets
infections they last a lot longer and can be much more severe than the average child gets. Listed below are ways to help prevent
the spread of infections.
1. Frequent hand washing
- After blowing noses and catching sneezes.
- After using the bathroom.
- Before eating.
2. Do not send children to school if they are actively sick with vomiting, diarrhea, cough, sore throat or fever. Children
should be fever and symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.
3. Keep children at home if they have had a positive strep test until they have been on antibiotics and are fever free for 24
hours.
4. If your child has a rash that you think may be contagious, please do not send him or her to school. Call your doctor for
advice.
If your child or a sibling has been in school and is then diagnosed with a contagious disease such as chickenpox, measles, strep
throat, mono or mumps please notify the school as soon as possible (or contact Kate and Mike directly at 6155228). Some of these
can be life threatening for Alice.
The parents of the child who has had a liver transplant appreciate your assistance in making attending school a healthy
experience for their child. We view this as an opportunity to continue to instill healthy habits in all our children. Limiting the spread
of germs that cause illnesses should be the goal for all of us.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Yours sincerely
