Susan D’Ath, main organiser of the event, explains ICONZ wanted to put on a party for the community to celebrate the good things in life. “We do not want to celebrate the horrible and nasties; there are better things to focus on.” She points out that Halloween is not a traditional New Zealand celebration. “It’s been commercially pushed. But a Light Party is a chance to get the community together—any excuse for a party.” The Light Party caters for five- to 12-year-olds but families are welcome. It will take place at St Andrew’s Church facilities, Wilson WILSON STREET, GERALDINE Y PHONE 693Street, 8538from 5.30-7.30pm and is a free event. Children can dress up as super heroes and there will be games, crafts, face painting, a disco, bouncy castle (weather permitting) and food. Susan adds, “It will be lots of fun with plenty of things for the younger kids to do.” Last year’s Light Party was hugely popular with around 200 children attending. Anticipating similar numbers this year the 6 Wilson St, Geraldine v Ph 693 8538 ICONZ team will be registering everyone as they arrive at the church foyer and requesting an emergency contact telephone number for all the children attending. If it rains, numbers will be limited to the capacity of the church facilities. ICONZ is an action, adventure, activity and values-based programme for six to 11-year-old Kiwi boys but the Geraldine group is different in that girls have joined too. Susan explains that Celebrate Diwali with us while there is a separate ICONZ programme for girls she and the other leaders felt that in a rural community the girls would enjoy All takeaway curries only $12.99 a more outdoors adventure focused programme. “We thought we would combine them; it is a good mix and we have a lot of (excluding seafood and goat) fun.” ICONZ is part of the Presbyterian Ministry but anyone is Till 31 October welcome. ICONZ meets every Friday night during term time at St 7 Talbot Street 693 8877 Andrew’s Church Hall from 6.30-8pm. For more details, contact Susan on 693 9905 or 027 318 1657. Trained mostly in drawing and working frequently in oil, she says, “I always wanted to do printmaking as well, so when I arrived here, I had my press made. “Then there was a learning process — I did courses in Methven and Wanaka, and I went to a printmaking course with Pauline Bellamy in Portobello.” Next month, Pauline will bring her expertise to Geraldine to run a workshop in Jenny’s studio and make use of the specially-built press. Participants will begin by etching an image into a plate, traditionally copper, but now commonly acrylic, acetate or zinc. Pauline says, “It’s a quick and exciting way of using a press.
