Hilton Geraldine Tennis Club head coach,
Murray Bradshaw, is a busy man this season.
He is responsible for coaching nine of the
club’s 10 interclub school teams with three
teams in each of the A, B and C grades. A
10th team is also competing in the junior
premier grade.
Murray says he is particularly proud of
the club’s South Canterbury representatives,
Arabella Acland, Brianna Howell and MollyKate Morrison. Competing in the under-10
category at a recent rep competition in
Dunedin, Murray says the trio was not only
part of the South Canterbury team that won
the overall competition, but also came first
in their own age group.
Three additional coaches have been
involved with Hilton Geraldine Tennis this
year. Henry Craib has been responsible for
coaching 43 children in a six-week Hot
Shots programme, an introductory tennis
system developed in Australia and adopted
by Tennis New Zealand. It aims to engage
young players actively and in a fun and social
manner while developing their tennis skills.

and George Payne assisted Henry.
While the club has been well-resourced
with coaches this year, Murray says he
is concerned for the future. Employment
opportunities could interfere with his ability
to commit to tennis. “I’m pleading for
someone to coach next year if I can’t do it.”

Ilu Day Spa offers an extensive treatment range
After working from home for seven years,
Gemm Lundie is now enjoying the opening
of her new day spa business in Geraldine.
The former ANZ building on Talbot Street
now offers a retreat for customers to enjoy
a wide range of treatments. “We really
wanted to create somewhere classy, elegant
and relaxing for people to just go and
disappear from the world,” she says. Gemm
and her husband planned and executed the
renovation over a three-year span.
Beauty therapy, massage, nails, skin care
and ear piercing are few of an extensive range
of treatments on offer at the spa. Plans are
in the making to convert the entire building
into a wellness centre with therapists of
different genres, ranging from counselling to
homeopathy, collaborating to provide a wide
range of treatments to customers.
“We are so lucky to have so many different
therapists in Geraldine, but nobody knows
where to find them,” says Gemm. “The idea
is for all those therapists to offer their services
from the one place. That way when people
walk in the door nobody will know what
services they are using or why. We want to
give our customers a friendly space and also
help them maintain anonymity.”
Ilu Day Spa officially opened last week and
booking slots are filling up fast. “I’ve had so
much support from my regular client base,”
says Gemm, who has bookings spanning

her clientele that booking slots in her busy
schedule was proving difficult, Gemm hired
Michelle Thew, a qualified beauty therapist
relocating from Christchurch to Geraldine,
to share the load.
“I’m looking forward to being a part of the
community,” says Michelle, who has over
20 years’ experience in the business and
specialises in facials and skin care treatments.
Michelle is now taking bookings alongside
Gemm.

McKenzie Lifestyle Village celebrates at open day
Late last month Geraldine’s McKenzie Lifestyle Village welcomed visitors from
the community to check out its facilities and see how far the retirement village has
progressed.

branch took the chance
to pop a cork for its own

Christmas Parade - biggest ever?
The streets of Geraldine, as well as a few balconies, were
packed last Friday evening as people made the most of the
warm summer evening to usher in the festive season at the
Go Geraldine Christmas Parade.
Parade organising committee chair, Merran Blake, believes
this may have been the biggest audience turnout yet, “While
we didn’t manage an official count we know the streets were
fuller and busier than ever before. We attribute it to the great
reputation our parade has around the region.”
Renowned for its creative floats, the entries certainly did
not disappoint this year with everything from a live deer to
a hearse sporting magnificent golden dragons. Parade prizes
were awarded to Fonterra for best family focus, Haywood
Cottage Montessori School for most enterprising float and
Barkers for best Christmas spirit.
Post-parade MC, Sam Wilson, welcomed Santa to the
Village Green for a lolly scramble followed by the Geraldine
Primary School Kapa Haka group and the prize draws for the
Santa Sack draw.
As the sun went down and the air cooled, the party took
on a different note as rock band Sons of Remo turned up the
volume and wowed the crowd with familiar favourites.
Go Geraldine co-ordinator Janene Adams is thrilled with
the night. ”The Go Geraldine Parade is unique on the calendar
as it has such a welcoming and intimate atmosphere with
an amazing array of floats. The whole town gets behind the
parade and it feels like one giant street party. What a great
night.”

church and community members to be deserving of gifts.
“We really appreciate any donations that are received.”
Geraldine Lionesses will distribute the gifts during
Christmas week.
Donors can leave gifts under the tree until 18 December.
Gift donations must be new, wrapped and state the
appropriate age group and gender. Families may receive
food baskets that contain everything needed for a Christmas
dinner. “The response from the community is huge. It’s a
really great initiative.”

Recently I have listened to a lot of talk about hitting ISL
in their “heartland”. The “heartland” idea is all very well to
inflame emotions in a scared population, but does nothing
to address the real issue. The “heartland” of terrorism is
not Syria, Iraq or any other Eastern and distant land, but
right here in New Zealand or the UK, depending on where
you live.
Just look at the hopelessness of our poverty-stricken
young folk; low wages where jobs are available, and the
sheer unavailability of decent, affordable, housing. If you
lift wages there is a higher tax paid, more money flows
to businesses, and hope gets a boost and thus violence
postponed.
