this article are ever
going to have
spring! The ground
is still white and
it’s getting to the
end of April.
At our Drove
April
Business
Meeting we voted
to give a donation
to the Hutchinson
Senior Class Party. We also donated ice cream
for part of the dessert for the Elks dinner after
the Installation of the 2013-2014 Officers.
Congratulations to all the Elks Officers. At the
end of April Karen Scieszka and I will be presenting a scholarship to a recipient at Ridgewater College. We also contributed to the
Minnesota Elks Youth Camp.
Our Business Meeting will be on May 8 at 1
p.m. at Jan Draeger’s home. We will be hon-
oring our departed members and celebrating
our Drove Anniversary. We will discuss the
Pie Social in conjunction with the Elks Flag
Day Ceremony on June 10 at Library Square.
The Drove Social Meeting will be on May
24. Til next month...

Grand Exalted Ruler’s Message Honorable Thomas S. Brazier
To Officers and
Members:
May is time to
brainstorm
for
family activities.
As we look
toward summer,
we know many
of our Members
have
children
who will soon be
out of school.
Summer
vacations are being
planned, and many Members will be traveling.
For those who are retired, they may be returning to their home Lodge from their “winter
residence.” May is a good time to explore
ways to provide a broad spectrum of activities,
not only for Members but also for those who
may visit our communities.
The first possibilities are Mother’s Day and
Memorial Day. A Mother’s Day Brunch for
Members and visiting guests is a great way to
show off your Lodge and generate interest in
membership. Closer to home, a family barbeque or carnival is a good draw and may be
used for recruiting new Members. June brings
Father’s Day, another great chance for a family event such as a luau, steak night, or simply
hamburgers and hotdogs by the pool.
While many Lodge Officers will be at Grand
Lodge in July, your Lodge Activities Committee can plan for a July 4 celebration. If you
have a swimming pool at your Lodge, get everyone involved in some pool games. Sack
races, bocce ball, croquet and other lawn activities would make the day fun for the whole
family. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, just
something to provide members and families
with a place to share the day.
Other Lodge events do not necessarily need
to be tied to a special holiday. Explore having
an inexpensive family spaghetti feed on a Friday night, make-your-own tacos with a nominal charge per taco, or an ice cream social.
Every activity contributes to promoting your
Lodge and the perception that the Lodge is
alive and prosperous.
Finally, be sure to promote your charitable
activities. You should have membership applications and literature promoting your major
project and other special programs available at
all times. And don’t forget that the event can
serve a dual purpose by designating the proceeds for a special Lodge project.
So get creative! Brainstorm with your Officers and Committees. Some activities will
undoubtedly be more successful than others.
But your Members will appreciate your efforts, and your Lodge will become the place to
go with the family in the summer.

City-Wide Easter Egg Hunt
More than 600 children participated in the City-Wide Easter
Egg Hunt sponsored by Hutchinson Elks Lodge 2427. The event
was held at the McLeod County Fairgrounds on Saturday,
March 30. Each child received a bag containing candy. Four
areas based on age were roped off in the Agribition Building and
were covered with plastic eggs filled with candy and other
candy items were spread among the eggs. As the Hutchinson
Clown Club members mingled among the kids, they distributed
Dairy Queen coupons.
Many helpers from the Elks Lodge, the Kiwanis, the Lions,
and other service organizations helped with the event. The students at Maplewood Academy filled the plastic eggs for the
event. The Lodge expresses its appreciation to all who helped at
Sid Grams, Chair
the event and to the Hutchinson businesses who generously contributed to the cost of the Hunt.
Eight children were the proud winners of the eight bicycles
given away at the Easter Egg Hunt:
0-3 year old boy: Zachary Padrnos; girl: Keyanna Lepley
4-5 year old boy: Trenten Hanson; girl: Chloe Schilling
6-7 year old boy: Merrik First; girl: Kami Sillident
8-9 year old boy: Mason Klabunde; girl: Ellie Franke

Elks Kindle Pride in Service
James A. Coggins,,
Grand Lodge Activities Committee Member
In this article – my last for the Grand Lodge Newsletter – I
wish to thank all of those with whom I have had the privilege of
working in promoting Elkdom while serving on four Grand
Lodge Committees.
Space will not allow me to name everyone, but I have received
help and encouragement from more past and present leaders of
Elkdom at the National, State and Local levels than I could list.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks exists to care for
each other and those in need.
I’ve visited many State Associations and Lodges and seen
their dedication to service. All Elks should be proud of their
accomplishments. I salute each of you.
As Elks, we know about our works for communities, veterans,
our military and families, scouts and other youth programs etc.,
but we must let everyone in our communities know about what
we do and ask them to join us.
We help more needy people than any other organization I
know of. Many of those we help have no one else to turn to besides the Elks. What would happen if we ceased to exist? We
must do all we can to keep our Order and Lodges strong and
growing to help those who depend on us.
Remember, it is an honor and privilege to be an Elk. Be proud
to be an American, be proud to be an Elk and be proud to share
your good works.
May God bless each of you, the BPOE, and above all let each
of us pray that God continues to bless our Great Nation.
