As Jane and I travel the great state of Ohio this year with
our corps of officers, we are humbled by the opportunity we
have been given. What an honor it is to be serving the Ohio
Elks Association as your State President for 2016-2017. We
are trying to visit every Lodge that we have not been to
before and some are repeats but still a lot of fun. By the
time you read this newsletter we will only have one District
left to visit. Wow, time sure is passing by quick, as we have
enjoyed meeting the many good Elks across Ohio.

It’s evident that Elkdom is strong in Ohio. As we make our
visitations and listen to the many good reports given at the
District meetings, there’s no doubt that through our many
programs, we as Elks do so much for our communities.
Without the volunteerism of Elks we would not be able to
provide the charitable work needed for our youth programs,
our Veteran programs, and our State major project Cerebral
Palsy. Without good Elks as yourselves, none of these
programs would be possible. For that, I thank you for
“Renewing, Energizing, and Delivering” to those with
needs. Please remember to get your reports in to Sammy to
insure our tax exempt status.

Once again, Elyria Lodge #465 demonstrated the “Elks
Care, Elks Share” motto with an amazing turnout and
show of support for the Gary Cawley benefit in August.
Elyria #465
The Lodge recently helped several families in cooperation
with Blessing House in Elyria, using funds secured from the
Elks National Foundation Beacon Grant. Blessing House
serves as a safety net for children of families in crisis. Using
these funds, the lodge was able to assist 13 various aged
children from 6 families by providing them the opportunity to
purchase clothes and shoes for the upcoming school year.
Beyond that, they also were able to provide book bags filled
with the necessary school supplies needed specifically for
these students, with an additional 10 book bags, purchased,
filled and distributed to other children.
The bus trip/poker run was a great success! (thank you to
Kathi and Larry Lowstetter and Sue and Jeff Powell) Again, it
was not only a great day of fellowship among our members,
but a chance to share, learn and visit with other lodges. This
was certainly camaraderie at its best.
Congratulations to Dave Noren for being named State Elk of
the year in April during the state convention in Dublin!
Norwalk #730
We've done well in recent months to get the word out about the
good work we are doing in Norwalk, here's a run-down of the
various publicity we've received:
June 2016 - Youth Activities: Article and photo in Norwalk Reflector
about the Elks Soccer Shoot we held on May 28th. This is the first
year we have held this event in a while, we just did not get good
participation in the past. However, this year went well with almost
30 kids participating. We held the event at a larger local soccer field
on the day of a tournament, so lots of kids were already there for
games. Soccer Chair Becky Parcher worked out the date & details
with one of the local youth soccer coaches, this was a very wise
decision and led to our success. We plan on this being an annual
event for us again going forward.
Elyria had their annual “Christmas in July” party. Chef
Darrell cooked a up a special Christmas feast, they had live
entertainment, a White Elephant Chinese Raffle and a 50/50
drawing, and chances to win other prizes. All the proceeds
from this event went back into the lodge! This was a fun
evening and a great way to support the lodge as well.
June 9th, 2016 - Youth Activities: Article and photo in Norwalk
Reflector about our 11th Annual Youth Banquet honoring our
Students of the Month and our local Americanism Essay contest
Winner. We also presented a $1000 P.E.R. Scholarship to a local
senior student at this banquet.
July 13th, 2016 - There were at least (2) large headlines in the
Reflector this Summer regarding victories for the Left Grove Youth
Baseball team that we sponsor. "Elks Lodge 730" was prominently
displayed in larger bold text for all to see. Simply having our name
in the paper like this helps keep our organization in the public eye.

August 15th, 2016 - ENF Gratitude Grant & Ohio Elks Community
Service Grant: Article and photo in Norwalk Reflector about our
$2,200 Gratitude Grant donation to Norwalk Fire Department to
purchase (13) additional Residential Knox Boxes for use in our
community. The Knox Boxes are loaned out to local citizens that are
home-bound, elderly, or disabled, and they are a secure house key
box that securely attaches to their front doors, and are only
accessible by the fire department. By the Fire Department having
access to the house key, they can quickly gain entrance into the
home without having to break down a door or break through a
window. This helps save lives and money for the homeowner. Elks
#730 founded the Knox Box program in 2015 in conjunction with
Norwalk Fire Department via a $2000 Gratitude Grant. Also
highlighted in this article was our $700 Ohio Elks Community
Service Grant donation that the Fire Department used to buy (2)
200 foot search & rescue ropes and some additional hardware to
make several smaller search & rescue tag lines to tap off the main
lines. These allow the firemen to expand their search off into
various directions simultaneously.
September 5th, 2016 - ENF Beacon Grant: Article and photo in
Norwalk Reflector about our Beacon Grant work with Norwalk
Salvation Army. We donated $2000 for their Kids Summer Feed
Program. Our Elks members also packed up the weekend food bags
for the children prior to their distribution. Food bags were given to
children on Friday's so they had food to eat over the weekend. This
is our second year of involvement with this particular program, and
our third consecutive year of partnering up with the Norwalk
Salvation Army.
Facebook
We continue to maintain and post to our "Norwalk Elks
#730, Norwalk Ohio" Facebook page. Upcoming events,
announcements, etc... and we also recently started posting
our monthly newsletter on there as well.
July 4th, 2016 - Elks #730 participated in the Norwalk 4th of
July parade. Several members wearing their Elks gear walked
the parade route behind a truck with banners & a sign touting
who we are and what we do. They also passed out candy and
drug awareness items to youth along the parade route.
Thanks again to Steve Schwerer and his committee for
another successful Fishing Derby on Father’s Day. The
weather was perfect. Over 40 young people attended, and all
received a prize, with the top prizes bicycles.
August 11th, 2016 - Elks #730 hosted our annual End of the
Season Awards Banquet for the Left Grove Youth Baseball
team that we sponsor. The teams coaches, players, and the
parents of the players attended. We provided them all with a
meal and award medals for the kids. 95% of attendees are not
Elks members, but this is a good event to let outsiders know
about what we are doing in the community.
Galion #1191
Oktoberfest Weekend has come and gone and I would like
give a big “Thank You” to everyone that helped make the
weekend a success! The weather did not co-operate but you
did!
As the Elk’s calendar year goes past half way, our annual
District Inspection is arriving. We will be hosting the
District Officers on Thursday, November 3rd for dinner and
our inspection. Please show our hospitality to them when
they are visiting. I want to remind everyone that our Annual
Memorial Service will be Sunday, December 4, 2016. We
will get times out to everyone as soon as possible.
August 15th-20th, 2016 - Norwalk Elks manned all gates and
ticket booths at the Huron County Fair, with members
wearing their Elks gear to help put us in the public eye. This
is an annual event for our lodge.
Sandusky #285
We got great news at our recent District Meeting in Elyria.
Galion has been awarded the 2017 Fall District meeting. We
also received Certifi-cates for making our per capita for both

everyone who supports these worthy causes!

Warren Uxley and District Executive Committee member
Lloy Skil-licorn attended District Deputy Clinic Last
Saturday August 27th, in Willard.
Golf season is coming to an end and school is back in
session that means summer is over! And to me it means it’s
time to get out the Scholarship and Americanism Essay
Contest material out to the schools. These projects are for
our youth in our jurisdiction. (Galion, Crestline, Northmor
and Mount Gilead).
Bill and Barb Deming collected information from living and
from relative of deceased Elks veterans. They took the
information and pictures of the vets and posted the pictures
like you see and made two binders in the holder below with
all of the information they were able to gather. This is an
ongoing project.
The Flag Day Ceremony was Monday June 13th. Thank you
very much to all that attended! This ceremony reminds us to
remember why we should be thankful for the freedoms we
have.

President’sMessage Continued
As we try to “kick the door down” and show a gain in
membership we must remember how important it is to
retain these new members. The best way to retain these
new members is to find out what their interests are, and
then get them involved with one of our many programs
that aligns with those interests. This will make them feel
as if they are truly a part of the Lodge that does good
things in their community. This will give them a chance
to begin “Renewing, Energizing, and Delivering”
themselves, and maybe even tell a friend.
Pre-Thanksgiving Day Party Nov 23: Due to being closed

Thusday’s menu on Wednesday! Pizza, Wings and Nachos!

As we wrap up our visitations we find ourselves heading
straight into the Holiday Season. A Season that often
requires additional needs for many less fortunate. I am
confident, that as Elks we will step up to the challenge
throughout the State with children’s Christmas parties,
visitations to Veterans and many more while “Renewing,
Energizing, and Delivering”.

ENF BEACON GRANT and NEWARK LODGE 391
HELPING LOCAL KIDS
On Saturday, July 30th, 14 members and friends of
Newark Elks Lodge 391 set up shop to help the at-risk
kids of Newark City Schools. The $2000 Bacon Grant
allowed Lodge 391 to purchase 420 required school
uniform polo shirts for students who might not otherwise
be able to afford them.

fresh corn on the cob.
Our lodge volunteers set up canopies and tables, sorted
the shirts by gender and size, and finally helped each
student get the correct size and color shirt they wanted at
the annual event "Rally in the Alley" sponsored by the
Newark City Schools.
Newark City Schools feels that by wearing "uniform"
shirts and pants, it allows the emphasis to be put back into
learning and completing school.
ER Mitchell presented Jeff Snyder
with the Grand Lodge recognition for
bringing 3 new members.
Those participating were happy to spend the morning with
the kids and to help them get ready for their school year.

Newark Elks Lodge 391 Hosts Veterans Stand Down
Newark Elks Lodge 391 - Caring About our Community
Grants, secured a grant to help the Newark based agency, The
Main Place.
The $2000 grant was used to purchase new equipment and tools
for a workshop planned for the clients of The Main Place. The new
workshop will be used to help promote the recovery of adults
experiencing severe and persistent mental illness who are
transitioning to community housing and giving them the chance to
thrive and to live independently. This workshop will give the
clients a place to build and refurbish furniture, thus teaching skills
which can give them the ability to gain employment and to sell
what they make to supplement their income or to furnish their own
homes.
The grants are made possible by local member donations to the
Elks National Foundation and the Newark Elks Lodge 391
members are proud to be a part of the solution in the Newark and
Licking County communities.
8
The members of the Newark Elks Lodge 391 hosted
a Veterans Stand Down for the Licking County
Coalition of Housing and the Veterans Service
Commission. The Lodge ballroom was turned into
stations where legal advice, housing, Red Cross,
Habitat for Humanity, Jobs, American Legion and
clothing where veterans and families could visit. Drug
awareness
materials were also handed out to children, teens and
adults.
Elk members provided a hot meal of spaghetti,
garlic bread, and salad with desserts provided by the
American Legion Auxiliary, the area Doubletree Hotel
and water by Licking Memorial Hospital.
The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary helped serve the
lunch.
Newark Elks Lodge 391 Uses Freedom Grant for
Veterans
The Newark Ohio Elks Lodge 391 received a $2000
Freedom Grant from Elks National Foundation and
together with monetary and item donations, totaling
another $2000, were able to put together 40
Welcome Home Baskets for area veterans transitioning
from homelessness to housing. The baskets contained
everyday household items for cleaning, kitchen, bath
and bedroom that a vet would need to set up
housekeeping.
The Licking County Coalition of Housing has estimated
nearly 100 homeless county veterans in any given year.

Messages from the GER
November is for giving thanks, remembrance
MICHAEL F. ZELLEN
Grand Exalted Ruler
Our promise to our veterans is not an idle pledge. Over the years, our Lodges nationwide and their Members have honored our
pledge and have donated 10’s of millions of dollars in cash and in-kind contributions for those who gave so much to preserve our
freedom. While our support to our nation’s veterans is ongoing throughout the year, November is designated by our Order as
Veterans Remembrance Month.
Your Lodge should have an active Veterans Committee, dedicated to meeting the needs of veterans and military members in your
community. During Veterans Remembrance Month, it is a time to remember, a time to say thank you to those who have served our
country. Wherever veterans are institutionalized, the monotony of their day-to-day existence will be eased by personal visits by
your Lodge Members and their spouses. These visits bring cheer and comfort to veterans confined to VA medical centers and other
veterans facilities.
But for many their struggles are not over. Their battles are not yet won. We as Elks need to provide hope and comfort to veterans or
active military members, many of whom are not confined in VA hospitals, but are using outpatient clinics as well as those who live
alone and have no family or friends to assist them in their time of need. We can also assist homeless veterans to return to the
society he or she helped protect, as well as reach out to those veterans residing in assisted-care living centers.
As the needs of today’s veterans have changed, so has our programs. Today the Elks National Veterans Service Commission has
many new exciting programs and partnerships catering to veterans and military members, including the Army of Hope, the
Welcome Home Program and the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Program. In addition, the Elks National Foundation provides
Freedom Grants, enabling Lodges to harness the Elks’ passion for serving veterans and military members and to expand your
Lodges’ Veterans Programs.
For more information about these programs and the Elks Veterans Service Commission, please visit www.elks.org/vets.
I am certain your Lodge has scheduled special events during the November for Veterans in our VA hospitals, soldiers homes and
other VA facilities to benefit the unsung heroes of our nation, and demonstrate that “Elks” continue “Leading the Way.”
Donna and I wish you a very happy Thanksgiving. May God bless you, our veterans and the men and women who are serving in
the Armed Forces around the globe.

Thank you for being an Elk and for Caring and Sharing.
Upcoming events at the lodge for the fall this year will again
hosting the Browns Backers for all of the Browns games this
year. So if you are not a member please think about joining and
rooting on the Browns at the Lodge. We are also planning a fall
beer tasting for October and I have spoken to the “Lobster King”
Lew and towards the end of October/beginning of November be
on the lookout for a “Lobsters by Lew”. Again hope you had a
great summer full of fun things and are looking forward to fall.
BECOME A CP ANGEL PARTNER
You can help those afflicted with Cerebral Palsy have a
brighter tomorrow when you support fundraising projects
and make personal donations. And an easy way to donate is
become a CP ANGEL PARTNER.
Cerebral Palsy rehabilitation is the major project of the
Ohio Elks Association. Thought the year, your lodge holds
several different fundraising events to benefit this
worthwhile project. Such as the Yard Sale and the Coin
Boxes. With these funds, local agencies can help those in
need by purchasing equipment ad donations also contribute
to physical and occupational therapy, massages,
educational/training equipment, computers and software,
transportation needs and emotional support. The lives of CP
clients have been significantly improved with the help of
the Ohio Elks, there is much more to be done. Cerebral
Palsy is forever-there is no cure and it does not get better.
Secretary Todd would like to remind the members that we will
once again have the “Mug Club” For $100 you will get 24 oz of
your favorite draft beer at the price of a pint, This Mug Club runs
from September 2016-September 2017. Proceeds will go
towards patio lighting and furniture.
Also for the months of October and November, we will honor
the Exalted Grand Ruler’s recruitment drive. A delinquent
member can be reinstated for $1.00. And dues will be prorated.
After each Kenton home football game, we will have a special
post game meal offering. The menu will include hot sandwiches
and chips, fried foods, and pizza. What better way to close a
game night.
To become a CP ANGEL PARTNER, you simply pledge
your donation of a $100-$500 toward the project.
Donations can be made in one lump sum or over the course
of four years, in increments of $25, $50, $75, or $125. Your
first $100 total donation earns a bronze CP Angel Pin; $200
total earns a bronze CP Angel Pin; and a donation of $500
over four years gets all three pins plus a special Arch Angel
CP Pin.
Gallipolis #107
The Gallipolis Elks has received the $2000 Freedom Grant from
the Elks National Foundation to again purchased Christmas gifts
for our Veterans in our area. We did this last year in conjunction
with the VFW and the GAHS Senior Class Officers. It was a
huge success. We hope that this year we can again bring
friendship and Christmas cheer to our Vets and show them that
they are not forgotten.
Thanks, Rick Borton, ER
All contributions are tax-deductible. Every Elk should
under-stand our Major Project ad how important it is to so
many lives in Ohio. Won’t you please consider becoming a
CP Angel Partner?
Kenton #157
November 12—Save the date !! Veteran’s Day will be here
before you know it. We are looking forward to our annual
Veteran’s Breakfast on Saturday, November 12. In addition
to a great meal, we are planning to make a day of it again.
Although plans are not yet definite, we are looking at a bus
trip to a historical museum or something similar. If you
went last year, you know how much fun we had. It will
require reservations since we will need to know how many
to plan for. There will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin
board around the first of October. More details as plans
become definite.
We have funding thanks to the Elks National Foundation.
Come and bring your friends, especially veterans. If anyone
is interested in sponsoring a veteran or helping with the
planning, contact David Faulkner at 419-673-0962 or Julie
Crowe at 419-673-8035.

Van Wert Lodge No. 1197, Benevolent and Protective Order of
Elks held their annual District Deputy Inspection on September
13 in conjunction with their lodge meeting. District Deputy
Mark Ratliff, for the Northwest District, visited the lodge.
During his inspection, the books were audited and the affairs of
the lodge were checked.
The Elks handed out Elks drug awareness coloring books and
crayons to kids of all ages while providing information to
concerned parents. Thank you to all Elks that attended this event
and keep up the great work!

The Berea Elks, working closely with the Berea Fire
Department, received a $750 Community Service Grant
from the Ohio Elks Association to help fund new smoke
detectors and community lockboxes.
The Berea Elks hosted our 2nd annual lodge golf outing at The
Links in Olmsted Falls in August. The event was a great success
with 80 golfers participating to help raise money for the lodge
and for Elks Charities. It was one of the hottest days of the
summer, but that didn’t stop everyone from having a great time.
Many thanks to Trustee Nate Moore, Treasurer Hank Nest,
PER Bill Malo-ney, Trustee Carla Moore, and Secretary
Danielle Mahany for all their hard work planning and running
the event.
Berea Fire Department provides free smoke detectors to low
and fixedincome residents who otherwise could not afford
to safeguard their homes and families.
Additionally, Berea Fire and Berea Police have a special
lockbox program available for seniors and disabled persons
where a home’s master key is securely stored in an outdoor
lockbox. In the event of an emergency this key
can be accessed by first responders preventing the need to
break down a door to save a life. Only first responders have
access to this lockbox.
Also, many thanks to all the golfers that participated. We were
able to raise hundreds of dollars for ENF, CP, and the lodge
building fund.
The Berea Fire Department is grateful to the Berea Elks for
their generosity and continued support of key programs like
this in our community.
Speaking of the building, the improvements continue. The new
front doors have now been installed providing a much nicer
look and improved security for the building. Also, the back
patio and front steps have been poured, dramatically improving
the curb appeal of the building and giving us a beautiful area in
the back of the lodge to enjoy each other’s company next
spring. The outside demolition, paint, and restructuring of the
front will begin shortly.

The Berea Elks continue raise the bar of what it means to be
an Elk. In July we supported the City of Berea and the
Berea Police Department working with kids to educate them
about the dangers of drugs during the Touch a Truck event
at the Berea Grindstone Festival at Coe Lake.
Nearly a dozen Elks attended this event along with Roman
(of course!) as the District Drug Awareness trailer was
brought to the event.

National Foundation, a perpetual trust fund established many
years ago by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
Contributions to the Foundation are made each year by more
than one million Elks and their families and friends from
more than 2,000 Elks Lodges across the United States,
Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has a history of
supporting Boy Scouts. Many lodges nationwide sponsor
scout troops and provide a location for them to meet as well.
The Elks provides monies annually to the scouts for camping
equipment and helps to sponsor camping trips as well.
