An Introduction to Master Planning
T
he Church that Jesus established here on earth has a real life of
her own—she is the Bride of Christ, after all. As the Bride of
Christ, she is like an individual or like humanity as a whole,
who grows in understanding and beauty and ability over time.
A recent example of the continuing changes and spiritual growth of the
Church is the changes to the Mass three years ago. If you remember
back, there were some changes to our responses during Mass (for example, “And with your Spirit”), and the words in the Eucharistic Prayers of
Consecration sounded a bit different as well. These changes were a result of many years of studying the original Latin Mass prayers by the
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, working in collaboration
with theologians and liturgists who submitted the new translated text of
the Mass to Rome for her approval. The purpose for the change in the
liturgy was that at that point in time, some of the ways of expressing the
deep mysteries of our faith in the current text that the U.S. Church was
using were spot on while some other expressions of the mysteries
could’ve used some tweaking in order to further bring out its meaning.
These were not major changes to the way we celebrated Mass, but the
new text presented a more profound understanding of the truth that the
Church is constantly trying to stay faithful to. In fact, if we look back
on the history of the Church, we would see how the Church, like humanity as a whole, is always growing and trying to better accomplish the
mission of Jesus Christ. The life of the Church is a life of grace, and
those who are open to God’s providence will experience His goodness in
new and surprising ways as the Church, his Bride, grows in her intended
grandeur and beauty.
I mention these things about the Church’s growth because
Epiphany of the Lord, as a church of the Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston, also has a life of her own. She was called into existence some
thirty-three years ago, but she was always a part of God’s providence—
part of his “master plan” from all of eternity to sanctify and redeem his
people in Katy, Texas. All of the large parishes in the Archdiocese and
many smaller parishes as well have what we call a “master plan” for the
parish. It is essentially a twenty-year or so plan that is devised through
prayerful participation of the congregation and its leaders so that we
have a sense of what might be coming up in the life of the Church as we
continue to grow and mature as a community of faith.
Why do we need a master plan at Epiphany? Well, I get these
random requests and e-mails frequently, asking: “Father, can we have a
Spanish Mass?” or “Can we have a parish school?” or “Can we purchase
the land across the street?” These would be noble changes, but should
not be made without prayerful reflection and consideration. Saying
“yes” to each one would entail a certain amount of organizing and getting the right leaders and volunteers in place, not to mention

provide—a sense of understanding of how our parish will grow to meet
the spiritual need to deepen our faith and fulfill God’s Master Plan for his

eGiving with Faith Direct
You might want to consider making your generous
weekly contributions to the parish through Faith
Direct, the electronic giving program here at Epiphany of the Lord. Even if you are traveling on business or on vacation, you can make all of your contributions through Faith Direct by way of automatic
payment from your checking account or credit card,
just as you may do now with your mortgage, household bills, and other monthly payments. It is a great
way to simplify your giving, and it is the most costeffective, environmentally-friendly way for the parish to receive your gifts.
Faith Direct is the leading eGiving program for
Catholic churches in the Archdiocese as well as in
dioceses across the country. You can visit their website at www.faithdirect.net to learn more about how
to enroll securely online. Please note, our parish
code is TX613. Faith Direct also offers your family personalized offertory cards to replace your envelopes to be placed in the collection basket on Sundays.
I would like to take this opportunity as well to express my deepest gratitude for your generous contributions throughout the year. It is wonderful to be a
part of a faith community that so graciously supports the parish and the important ministries that the
Church provides. I hope that you find that this new
program makes it more convenient for you to continue to offer your gifts to Epiphany of the Lord.
Expressing the assurances of my prayerful remembrance of you and your family and my best wishes
in the Lord, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Tom Lam
