An Introduction to Master Planning T he Church that Jesus established here on earth has a real life of her own—she is the Bride of Christ, after all. As the Bride of Christ, she is like an individual or like humanity as a whole, who grows in understanding and beauty and ability over time. A recent example of the continuing changes and spiritual growth of the Church is the changes to the Mass three years ago. If you remember back, there were some changes to our responses during Mass (for example, “And with your Spirit”), and the words in the Eucharistic Prayers of Consecration sounded a bit different as well. These changes were a result of many years of studying the original Latin Mass prayers by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, working in collaboration with theologians and liturgists who submitted the new translated text of the Mass to Rome for her approval. The purpose for the change in the liturgy was that at that point in time, some of the ways of expressing the deep mysteries of our faith in the current text that the U.S. Church was using were spot on while some other expressions of the mysteries could’ve used some tweaking in order to further bring out its meaning. These were not major changes to the way we celebrated Mass, but the new text presented a more profound understanding of the truth that the Church is constantly trying to stay faithful to. In fact, if we look back on the history of the Church, we would see how the Church, like humanity as a whole, is always growing and trying to better accomplish the mission of Jesus Christ. The life of the Church is a life of grace, and those who are open to God’s providence will experience His goodness in new and surprising ways as the Church, his Bride, grows in her intended grandeur and beauty. I mention these things about the Church’s growth because Epiphany of the Lord, as a church of the Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston, also has a life of her own. She was called into existence some thirty-three years ago, but she was always a part of God’s providence— part of his “master plan” from all of eternity to sanctify and redeem his people in Katy, Texas. All of the large parishes in the Archdiocese and many smaller parishes as well have what we call a “master plan” for the parish. It is essentially a twenty-year or so plan that is devised through prayerful participation of the congregation and its leaders so that we have a sense of what might be coming up in the life of the Church as we continue to grow and mature as a community of faith. Why do we need a master plan at Epiphany? Well, I get these random requests and e-mails frequently, asking: “Father, can we have a Spanish Mass?” or “Can we have a parish school?” or “Can we purchase the land across the street?” These would be noble changes, but should not be made without prayerful reflection and consideration. Saying “yes” to each one would entail a certain amount of organizing and getting the right leaders and volunteers in place, not to mention 1 of 2 2 2 of 2 Baptisms Please contact parish office for responsible financial planning. That’s what the Master Plan would help preparation classes. provide—a sense of understanding of how our parish will grow to meet the spiritual need to deepen our faith and fulfill God’s Master Plan for his Baptism Session for Parents Church in Katy. nd 2 Saturday of February, The process isn’t entirely complicated. This past August, I formed May, August, November 10:00 AM – Noon a Steering Committee comprised of parishioners as well as representatives To register call of the Parish Council and Finance Council. And the Committee has inLouAnn Svoboda terviewed a hand-full of architectural firms before hiring the firm of Mer(281-578-8271) riman Holt Architects to help the Steering Committee study the parish Rite of Christian Initiation of and reflect on its life in preparing a plan for our future. The Architects Adults (RCIA) have interviewed the parish staff, the Pastoral Council and Finance Council members, the directors of Child’s Play and many of the key volunteer For information call LouAnn Svoboda coordinators of the various ministries here at our parish. As they contin(281-578-8271) ue to do so, one of the major endeavors is our parish questionnaire in which we will be asking parishioners to participate at Mass during the Sacrament of Marriage weekend of October 11th and 12th. After the questionnaires are collected, Must be a registered, active the Architects and the Steering Committee will review and record the remember of the parish at least sponses. And in the course of four to five months, I will be working with six months. Contact parish the Steering Committee and the Architects to come up with a Master Plan office eight months before wedding to begin preparation. for the parish based on many of the input and suggestions offered. Then we will present the Master Plan to the parish. We are by no means bound Finance Council Chair to each and every detail of the Master Plan—it just gives us a blueprint, a Denny Dellinger framework of sorts to see where we are and where we need to be if we are Knights of Columbus going to continue to grow in our ministry and mission as a Catholic Terren Roark, Grand Knight Church. In next weekend’s bulletin, I will provide additional information and a more detailed explanation of what to expect of the questionnaire on October 11th and 12th. In the meantime, please join me in prayer to Almighty God for our wonderful community of Epiphany, with renewed gratitude for his plan for each of our salvation through his Church.
