T his was the central question of Pope Francis’ homily during Palm Sunday Mass last year in Saint Peter’s Square, where 100,000 had gathered from around the world, bearing palms and olive branches. In his homily on the passion narrative that was read during the liturgy, the Pope said that while this week begins with a festive procession of welcome and praise of Jesus, it also recalls the mystery of the Lord’s death and resurrection of Holy Week. During this week, he said, “We would do well to ask just one question: who am I? Who am I, before my Lord? Who am I, who enters into Jerusalem in celebration? Am I able to express my joy, to praise Him? Or do I keep distant? Who am I, before Jesus Who suffers?” The Holy Father recalled the names of those appearing in the Gospel reading for the day which recounts Christ’s Passion and Death. “Is my life asleep,” he said, like that of the disciples who slept while the Lord suffered? “Am I like Judas, who pretended to love, and kissed the Master to give him over, to betray him? Am I a traitor?” Pope Francis listed the other players in the account of Christ’s Passion, calling us to ask ourselves if we are like one of these: Pilate, who washed his hands of his responsibility in condemning Jesus; the crowds who chose the criminal Barabbas over Jesus; the soldiers who struck Jesus and mocked him; the passersby who mocked Jesus as he hung on the Cross. The Pope then went on to name those in the Gospel reading who showed their fidelity to Jesus: Simon of Cyrene, who helped carry the Cross; Joseph of Arimathea, the “hidden disciple,” who offered his own newly-hewn tomb for Jesus’ Body to be laid in; the women who wept and prayed before the tomb. Am I like Mary, he said, the “Mother of Jesus, who was there, suffering silently?” Welcome Newcomers Pope Francis concluded his homily saying that this question ought to accompany us through Holy Week: “Where is my heart? To which of these people If you would like more am I most alike?” information on our Parish Community, please visit ‘Pope Francis concluded his address by calling us to turn to the Virgin Mothwww.epiphanycatholic.org. er, “because she helps us always to follow the example of Jesus with faith.” 2 Events & Meetings This Week SUNDAY, MARCH 29 9:45 & 11:30 AM, Nursery: 0-5 years: Room 214 3:30 PM, Children’s Faith Formation 3:30 PM, Jr High Faith Formation 7:00 PM, HSFF/Confirmation: PAC MONDAY, MARCH 30 9:00 AM, ESL Level 4: Room 307 9:30 AM, ESL Level 1/2: Room 310 9:30 AM, ESL 4 Conversation: 301 7:00 PM, Scout Troop 1146: Rooms 204/205/206/207/212 7:00 PM, RCIA Walk Through: Church 7:00 PM, Job Networking: Rec Room TUESDAY, MARCH 31 9:30 AM, ESL 2: Room 303 9:30 AM, Quilters: Room 411 9:30 AM – 7:00 PM, Adoration: Chapel 10:00 AM, Holy Hour Rosary for Respect Life: Chapel 10:00 AM, Scripture Study: Den 1:00 PM, ESL 2: Room 301 4:45 PM, Children’s Faith Formation 4;45 PM, Junior High Faith Formation 4:45 PM, HSFF/Confirmation: 312 7:00 PM, Scout Troop 1288: Rooms 301/303, Rec Room 7:00 PM, Rosary: Chapel 7:00 PM, Walking through Grief: Den 7:30 PM, Evening Prayer: Chapel WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1 9:00 AM, ESL LEVEL 4: ROOM 307 9:30 AM, ESL Level 1/2: Room 310 9:30 AM, ESL Level 3: Room 308 9:30 AM, Called to be Mom: Rec Rm 10:00 AM, Bible Timeline Series: Den 4:45 PM, Children’s Faith Formation 5:30 PM, Children’s Choir Practice 6:30 PM, Children’s Faith Formation 6:30 PM, Junior High Faith Formation 6:30 PM, HSFF/Confirmation: PAC 7:00 PM, Adult Choir Practice: Church 7:45 PM, Overflow: Great Room THURS, APRIL 2 – HOLY THURSDAY PARISH OFFICES CLOSE AT NOON 9:30 AM, ESL 2: Room 303 10:00 AM, Adult Spiritual Book Study: Den 7:00 PM, Mass of the Lord’s Supper: Church FRIDAY, APRIL 3 – GOOD FRIDAY PARISH OFFICES CLOSED 3:00 PM, Good Friday Service: Church NO BINGO SAT. Every day we have the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and be the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the courage to stand up for those in need of our help. Training—Are you interested in becoming a Reader of the Word for our parish? We will be having a training session for all interested persons on Saturday, April 11 at 9:30 a.m. in the church. If interested, please contact Craig Shemon at [email protected] Vocations Corner PRAYER FOR PRIESTS TO ST. JOSEPH O illustrious patriarch, St. Joseph, who carried the Infant Jesus in thy blessed arms and who, During the space of 30 years, lived in the most intimate familiarity with him, take under thy powerful protection those whom he has charged to continue his mission, to preach his Gospel, and to dispense everywhere his graces and blessings. Sustain them in their fatigues and labors; console them in their pains; fortify them in their combats; but above all, keep far from them all evils of sin. Obtain for them the humility of St. John the Baptist, the faith of St. Peter, the zeal and charity of St. Paul, the purity of St. John, and the spirit of prayer and recollection of which though, my dear saint, art the model, so that, after having been on earth, the faithful dispensers of the Mysteries of thy foster Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, they may in heaven receive the recompense promised to pastors according to the Heart of God. Amen.
