In the narrative of Christ’s Passion and Death, who am I?
T
his was the central question of Pope Francis’ homily during Palm
Sunday Mass last year in Saint Peter’s Square, where 100,000 had
gathered from around the world, bearing palms and olive branches.
In his homily on the passion narrative that was read during the liturgy, the
Pope said that while this week begins with a festive procession of welcome
and praise of Jesus, it also recalls the mystery of the Lord’s death and resurrection of Holy Week. During this week, he said, “We would do well to ask just
one question: who am I? Who am I, before my Lord? Who am I, who enters
into Jerusalem in celebration? Am I able to express my joy, to praise Him? Or
do I keep distant? Who am I, before Jesus Who suffers?”
The Holy Father recalled the names of those appearing in the Gospel reading
for the day which recounts Christ’s Passion and Death. “Is my life asleep,” he
said, like that of the disciples who slept while the Lord suffered? “Am I like
Judas, who pretended to love, and kissed the Master to give him over, to betray him? Am I a traitor?”
Pope Francis listed the other players in the account of Christ’s Passion, calling
us to ask ourselves if we are like one of these: Pilate, who washed his hands of
his responsibility in condemning
Jesus; the crowds who chose the
criminal Barabbas over Jesus; the
soldiers who struck Jesus and
mocked him; the passersby who
mocked Jesus as he hung on the
Cross.
The Pope then went on to name
those in the Gospel reading who
showed their fidelity to Jesus: Simon of Cyrene, who helped carry
the Cross; Joseph of Arimathea,
the “hidden disciple,” who offered his own newly-hewn tomb
for Jesus’ Body to be laid in; the
women who wept and prayed before the tomb. Am I like Mary, he said, the “Mother of Jesus, who was there,
suffering silently?”
Welcome Newcomers
Pope Francis concluded his homily saying that this question ought to accompany us through Holy Week: “Where is my heart? To which of these people
If you would like more am I most alike?”

Jesus told us “whatever you do for the least of my
brothers, you do for me.” Every day we are presented
opportunities to help someone. Every day we have
the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and
be the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the courage to
stand up for those in need of our help.

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS TO ST. JOSEPH
O illustrious patriarch, St. Joseph, who carried the Infant Jesus in thy blessed arms and who,
During the space of 30 years, lived in the most intimate
familiarity with him, take under thy powerful protection those whom he has charged to continue his mission, to preach his Gospel, and to dispense everywhere
his graces and blessings. Sustain them in their fatigues
and labors; console them in their pains; fortify them in
their combats; but above all, keep far from them all
evils of sin.
Obtain for them the humility of St. John the Baptist,
the faith of St. Peter, the zeal and charity of St. Paul,
the purity of St. John, and the spirit of prayer and recollection of which though, my dear saint, art the model, so that, after having been on earth, the faithful dispensers of the Mysteries of thy foster Son, Our Lord
Jesus Christ, they may in heaven receive the recompense promised to pastors according to the Heart of
God. Amen.

eGiving with Faith Direct
You might want to consider making your generous
weekly contributions to the parish through Faith
Direct, the electronic giving program here at Epiphany of the Lord. Even if you are traveling on business or on vacation, you can make all of your contributions through Faith Direct by way of automatic
payment from your checking account or credit card,
just as you may do now with your mortgage, household bills, and other monthly payments. It is a great
way to simplify your giving, and it is the most costeffective, environmentally-friendly way for the parish to receive your gifts.
Faith Direct is the leading eGiving program for
Catholic churches in the Archdiocese as well as in
dioceses across the country. You can visit their website at www.faithdirect.net to learn more about how
to enroll securely online. Please note, our parish
code is TX613. Faith Direct also offers your family personalized offertory cards to replace your envelopes to be placed in the collection basket on Sundays.
I would like to take this opportunity as well to express my deepest gratitude for your generous contributions throughout the year. It is wonderful to be a
part of a faith community that so graciously supports the parish and the important ministries that the
Church provides. I hope that you find that this new
program makes it more convenient for you to continue to offer your gifts to Epiphany of the Lord.
Expressing the assurances of my prayerful remembrance of you and your family and my best wishes
in the Lord, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Tom Lam

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT
Grieving the loss of a loved one
through death takes time. It is not
uncommon for the period of grief to
last two to five years. Many different
levels of loss can be experienced
during this time. The support of others who have had similar experience can help us be
more patient and understanding with ourselves as
we go through our time of grief. Please join us for
our next monthly gathering on Monday, April
13th at 7pm in the Room 303 of the PAC. Or every
Tuesday in the Den of the Parish Activity Center for
Walking Through Grief.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A PERSONAL
WAY TO SHARE GOD’S LOVE
WITH OTHERS?
Pope Benedict wrote in his first
Encyclical that he wished to
speak of the love which God
lavishes upon us and which we
in turn must share with others.

Paul members visit with individuals who are in urgent need of
assistance. If you would like to
be part of this personal ministry or to learn more
