A Reflection by Pope Francis
Pope Francis’ Message for the 50th World Day of Social
Communications (to be held on May 8th). The Message is symbolically
signed by the Holy Father on Sunday, January 24, 2016, Feast of St. Francis
of Sales, Patron Saint of journalists.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The Holy Year of Mercy invites all of us to reflect on the relationship between
communication and mercy. The Church, in union with Christ, the living incarnation of
the Father of Mercies, is called to practice mercy as the distinctive trait of all that she is
and does. What we say and how we say it, our every word and gesture, ought to express
God’s compassion, tenderness and forgiveness for all. Love, by its nature, is communication; it leads to openness and sharing. If our hearts and actions are inspired by charity, by
divine love, then our communication will be touched by God’s own power.
As sons and daughters of God, we are called to communicate with everyone, without exception. In a particular way, the Church’s words and actions are all meant to convey mercy, to touch people’s hearts and to sustain them on their journey to that fullness
of life which Jesus Christ was sent by the Father to bring to all. This means that we ourselves must be willing to accept the warmth of Mother Church and to share that warmth
with others, so that Jesus may be known and loved. That warmth is what gives substance
to the word of faith; by our preaching and witness, it ignites the ‘spark’ which gives them
life.
Communication has the power to build bridges, to enable encounter and inclusion,
and thus to enrich society. How beautiful it is when people select their words and actions
with care, in the effort to avoid misunderstandings, to heal wounded memories and to
build peace and harmony. Words can build bridges between individuals and within families, social groups and peoples. This is possible both in the material world and the digital
world. Our words and actions should be such as to help us all escape the vicious circles
of condemnation and vengeance which continue to ensnare individuals and nations, encouraging expressions of hatred. The words of Christians ought to be a constant encouragement to communion and, even in those cases where they must firmly condemn evil,
they should never try to rupture relationships and communication.
For this reason, I would like to invite all people of good will to rediscover the power of mercy to heal wounded relationships and to restore peace and harmony to families
and communities. All of us know how many ways ancient wounds and lingering resentments can entrap individuals and stand in the way of communication and reconciliation.
The same holds true for relationships between peoples. In every case, mercy is able to
create a new kind of speech and dialogue. Shakespeare put it eloquently when he said:
“The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon
the place beneath. It is twice blessed: it blesseth him that gives and him that takes” (The
Merchant of Venice, Act IV, Scene I).
Our political and diplomatic language would do well to be inspired by mercy, which
never loses hope. I ask those with institutional and political responsibility, and those
charged with forming public opinion, to remain especially attentive to the way they speak
of those who think or act differently or those who may have made mistakes. It is easy to
yield to the temptation to exploit such situations to stoke the flames of mistrust, fear and
hatred. Instead, courage is needed to guide people towards processes of reconciliation. It
is precisely such positive and creative boldness which offers real solutions to ancient
conflicts and the opportunity to build lasting peace. ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for
they will be called children of God.’

BAPTISM PREPARATION SESSION
The session for parents and godparents to prepare for
the baptism of their infants will be held Saturday,
February 13, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon in the
Family Center. This preparation session is required
before parents can schedule the Sacrament of Baptism
for their infants. Parents and godparents are encouraged
to attend this session before the birth of the child. Call 281-5788271 to register for this session. Childcare during this class is

name, ages of children needing nursery and name/date of event. The

The weekend of February 13 -14, Epiphany of the
Lord will launch the public phase of the Faith in our
Future – InvesƟng in Catholic EducaƟon campaign to
build a new Catholic elementary and middle school
and expand and relocate the Outreach Center. A er
every Mass that weekend, parishioners are invited
to the Family Center to a end a School/Campaign
Informa on Session. Families can also pick up their
personal campaign packets in the Family Center with
your own campaign booklet, le er from Fr. Tom and
pledge card. We are excited to launch this historic
effort for Epiphany and build the first Catholic
elementary school in Katy.

Loss of a close family member can
be extremely stressful. Conflicts, triggered by stress, may arise and even
divide a family. Acknowledging grief
is felt by all members of a family,
while respecting that each may
grieve differently, is important. Our next gathering

FOOD DRIVE – Next Week
Ever notice how cranky kids
(adults, too) get if they haven’t
eaten a meal on time? Those who
may not know when they’ll have
their next meal feel even worse, in
addition to being sick and/or unable to focus on schoolwork. Unbeknownst to
many, there are several in the Katy area who
could use help with meals.
We can ease this burden by helping the Knights
of Columbus collect items for our Food Pantry,
especially the following: Soups, Canned Vegetables and Canned meats. These can be
brought to either parking lot after morning Masses. Thank you for your assistance!
Caregiver’s Support Group
February 11 from 10 to 11 in the PAC
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the demands
of caring for someone with an illness or disability you are not alone. Come join us as we share
the care giving experience, support one another
and develop resources to assist you, the caregiver. A psychologist and spiritual director lead
this support group. For more information please

Clinic Care Kits
Through the generous
donations of our
parishioners and Forest
Orthodontist who donated
toothpaste and
toothbrushes, we were able
to assemble and deliver 329 Clinic Care Kits. We
would like to say thank you to all who donated and
to our tireless volunteers that assembled the kits to
be given to Krause Children’s Center, Christ Clinic
and our own St. Vincent de Paul Society.

with an on-site day retreat on

not presently in high school, baptized Catholic
and received first holy Communion, and, if

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Rave reviews greeted Jesus’ first hometown
homily proclaiming a year of God’s mercy, but the
mood turned violent when he went on to declare
that God’s mercy embraces outsiders; it rejects
distinctions between citizen and foreigner, acceptable and unworthy, even sinner and saint. Far
from being anyone’s personal possession, God’s
kingdom is open to everyone, God’s love unconditional, God’s mercy boundless. By this Jubilee Year
of Mercy, Pope Francis repeats Jesus’ challenge in
today’s Gospel to broaden our horizons until our
vision matches Jesus’ vision of every sinner as a
potential saint, and each suffering stranger as our
neighbor. Jesus, says Pope Francis, continually went
beyond the law, keeping company with public sinners and even sharing meals with them to demonstrate that God’s mercy is “the beating heart of
the Gospel” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). To be truly
Jesus’ disciples, such unconditional love and boundless mercy must also be at the center of all we say
and do.

Center for our Annual Mardi Gras Celebration
and Prayer Service to prepare for the beginning
of Lent. Dinner will be served---pancakes and

the palms from last Good Friday for a Lenten
Blessing. (Traditionally these are the ashes for
Ash Wednesday.)
Bring blessed palm branches
from last year to the Faith Formation office during regular office hours or to the Church narthex. There will
be a small basket for the palms. Thank you!
