the program of events
November 8, 2015
East Greenwich High School
On behalf of the East Greenwich Education Foundation Board of
Directors, I’m delighted to welcome you to the inaugural EGEF
Spelling Bee! Designed to be fun, educational, and yes — maybe
even a little competitive — the Bee will hopefully serve as an annual
gathering that brings together students, faculty, administrators,
parents, and community members for a spirited and lively event.
Since its founding in 2008, EGEF has granted over $220,000 to
teachers who have implemented innovative, classroom-based
projects. We are fortunate to live in a community that consistently
demonstrates such strong and enthusiastic support for public
education, and are grateful for the outstanding teachers,
administrators, coaches, and staff who educate and care for our
children. We’re hopeful that this event not only raises awareness
for EGEF’s vision, but also generates additional funds so that the
Foundation can make even greater investments in our children’s
futures.
Like all major undertakings, organizing the Bee required the time,
treasure, and talent of dedicated, amazing volunteers, all of whom
went above and beyond to make the Bee a reality. It has been
a whirlwind few months, and we couldn’t have done it without
them. Additionally, dozens of businesses, community partners, and
organizations donated funds, food, raffle items and other resources
to make the EGEF Spelling Bee free — and profitable. Thank you for
your support!

Six teams, each comprised of three contestants, will
compete in each of the following Preliminary Rounds:
— Elementary Schools
—Cole
—Cole/EGHS
— Parent Teacher Group (PTG)
— Faculty / Coaches
— East Greenwich Public Servants
The winning team from each Preliminary Round will compete in a Final Round
and the winning team of this round will be the 2015 EGEF Spelling Bee
Champions.
Competing teams will sit at the front of the venue, seated together in their
respective group.
Each team will be provided a whiteboard and marker upon which to write the
spelling words to present to the judges.
A Master of Ceremonies (“MC”) will preside over the competition and
Pronouncers will take turns stating the words for their given Preliminary
Round. The MC will pronounce the words for the Final Round and present the
winning team with their award.
Pronouncers will state the spelling words as follows:
— pronounce each word clearly;
— define the word;
— use the word in a sentence; and
— repeat the word a fourth and final time.
— The word may be repeated one additional time if requested by a team.
All teams in a round will be given the same word. Teams will have [20
seconds] from the MC’s fourth iteration of the word until the time-keeper
sounds the timer. Team members will collaborate and can use provided paper
and pencils. When the timer sounds, the team captain will present the word,
legibly written on the whiteboard for the judges to review.
As each word is presented, a visual display of that word will be posted behind
the contestants for the audience to view.
— At no time during a round is a competitor allowed to turn around.
— “Coaching” from the audience during a competition round may cause team to be disqualified.
Six judges will be provided with the official spelling word lists for their
reference. One judge will be assigned to each team and will be in charge of
determining if words are spelled correctly. Judges will keep score for their
designated team during the round.
Judges will review each team’s word and indicate correct spelling by a “smile”
face paddle (correct) or a “frown” paddle (incorrect). A “smile” vote equals
a single point, and a “frown” receives no point. An illegible submission may
result in a “frown” vote from the judges.
At the end of each Preliminary Round, the team with the most points will
advance to the Final Round. A tie in a Preliminary Round will result in single
elimination until a winner is decided, or until 4 words have been used. If a tie
remains after the 4 words, a single speed elimination (5th) word will be used,
and the first team to present the word correctly will be designated the winner.
The Final Round will be an elimination round consisting of 4 words. If a
team submits an incorrect answer, that team will be immediately eliminated
from the round. If all teams spell the same word incorrectly, no team will be
eliminated, and the next word will be given. If a tie remains at the end of
the Final Round, then a single speed elimination (5th) word will be used to
determine the final winner.
•
There is NO FEE to participate in or watch the Spelling Bee.
Rules will be posted on the EGEF website (www.egefri.org) at least one week
prior to the competition to help student participants prep for the Bee.
Complimentary snacks and beverages will be provided — first come, first served.
Words
•
•
•
•
Words will be selected from the 2015-2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee
Consolidated Word List, the Scripps 2016 “Spell It” word list.
American Heritage will be the sole source and final authority for the spelling,
pronunciation, and definition of each word. It will be the only printed authority
consulted by the judges during the spelling bee.
Words for the Preliminary Rounds are chosen using the appropriate grade level
through 8th grade from the 2015-2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee Word Lists.
High school and adult participants will be given words using the 2016 Scripps
“Spell It” word list. The Final Round will consist of more difficult words using the 2016 Scripps “Spell
It” word list.
Teams
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Roster Criteria:
— Name of team
— 3 team members, with a 4th alternate if desired
— School grade or affiliation
There is no fee to register a team.
Teams will be comprised of 3 members, including a captain designated to legibly
print the word on the whiteboard and present to the judges.
No verbal answers will be accepted from the teams.
A 4th team-member can be added as an “alternate” (if necessary).
No team member will be allowed to use their personal electronic devices, books
or other references while seated at the front tables.
No team member can turn around to view the word displayed on the screen
behind them during their round.
Teams are encouraged to be creative with developing a team name and “bee” in
costume or uniform to motivate esprit de corps.
Master of Ceremonies (MC)
•
•
•
•
The MC will be asked to deliver the opening remarks and briefly review the
format and rules for the event, introduce the pronouncers, judges,
and ask team members to introduce themselves.
The MC will acknowledge sponsors according to their sponsorship level.
Between rounds, the MC will pose trivia questions to the audience. It is at
the discretion of the MC whom in the audience is chosen to answer. Trivia
winners will be awarded small prizes.
The MC will be asked to make the final determination in the
event of any discrepancies during the competition,
such as in a speed round.
Awards
•
•
The winner of the Final Round will be declared the “2015
EGEF Spelling Bee Champion” and receive the associated
bragging rights and any applicable prizes.
Judges will be asked to vote for the “Best-named Team”.
