14 August 2016
Dear Parishioners,
This past July, I had the opportunity to visit the
Finger Lakes region of New York State, renowned for its
scenery and its wineries. While I was there, I fulfilled a
longtime ambition: I visited the Cornell Ornithological
Laboratory, on the grounds of Cornell University in
Ithaca. I toured the lab, studied the exhibits, and hiked the
trails of Sapsucker Woods, binoculars in hand, to see what
I might see.
I did not have any exceptional sightings,
identifying a few warblers, a pair of wood ducks, two or
three woodpeckers, etc. – nothing new to add to my “Life
List,” but nonetheless agreeable. In fact, I have long ago
ceased to record in a Life List because it seemed to turn
birding (enthusiasts use it as a verb: “to bird”) into a
contest, even a chore; and consequently less enjoyable. I
recall travelling in Iceland, a great spot for birding; and
rejoining the group after a walk to Tjörnin Pond in
downtown Reykjavik, I mentioned that I had seen a
Barrows Goldeneye (uncommon/rare.) A woman in the
group was in my face with a vengeance: “Are you sure it
was a Barrows Goldeneye, not a Common Goldeneye;
how did you identify it?!” “By the black wing scapulars
with white spots and the white crescent in front of the
eye,” I answered. With a scowl, she grabbed her
binoculars. “I need that Barrows for my Life List!” And
she ran, yes, ran out of the hotel toward the pond. That’s
fun? I think not. I bird for the pleasure, not the victory.
There should be no competition in enjoying oneself.
What makes birding so appealing to so many
people? The answer is simple: we do it for the wonder and
beauty we find in their: the iridescence of a ruby-throated
hummingbird, the dazzling red of a scarlet tanager, the
elegant stride of a great blue heron, the thrill of a red-tailed
hawk riding thermal updrafts or an osprey diving for a fish.
We do it for enjoyment.
Beauty is a powerful motivation. It has long
stirred the human spirit in nature, in art, in word and
imagination. What do we mean when we call something
beautiful? One answer was offered by Thomas Aquinas in
his Summa Theologica: Id est quod visum placet – the
beautiful is “That which, being seen, pleases.” That’s all,
nothing complicated: “That which, being seen, pleases.”
And by “seen,” he means experienced in any form. In the
case of music, beauty is heard, not literally seen.
In that definition, Aquinas situates beauty solidly,
as the maxim goes, “in the eye (or the ear) of the
beholder.” It is mine to decide what I find beautiful. No
one can tell me I’m wrong, that I didn’t enjoy that piece of
music or that particular landscape. Others might disagree
and say that they did not find it appealing. But they cannot
tell me that I did not. As the Latin proverb advises, De
gustibus non est disputandum: “We shouldn’t argue over
taste.”
Notice, Aquinas says, “that, which being seen.”
He does say “acquired.” That would turn the beautiful
into a “good” – something we want to possess. If we
purchase something for the pleasure it affords, that’s
beauty. If we purchase a piece as an investment, likely to
appreciate in market value, that makes it a “good,” a
commodity. Possessing is different from enjoying. And
we must be willing to let go of the moment; again, we can’t
hold on to it to make it ours. With beauty, we enjoy
without owning, without keeping. We enjoy for the
moment and are grateful, and we move on.
That point was reiterated by the 18th c. German
philosopher, Immanuel Kant. In his Critique of Judgment,
Kant agreed that our experience of the beautiful necessarily
has a certain “disinterested” quality – we derive no profit,
there is no ulterior motive, nothing we are going to gain
except pleasure. And there is an “immediacy” as well. It
just hits us and we feel it – a “Wow!” moment. Art or
music critics might examine the construction and the
conscious arrangement of detail in what we experience.
But we have either enjoyed it or not already, before any
analysis. Those same critics might rate one piece over
another, this one better than that, based on established
criteria of the discipline. But that, too, does not determine
my enjoyment or boredom. One man’s opera is another
man’s country western. One woman’s mural is another
woman’s wallpaper.
So let’s not look at the price tag or try to make the
beautiful ours alone (you can’t buy a sunset and install it at
home) or try to acquire more beauty than our neighbors – it
is not a commodity; there is no contest. Let’s just relax and
delight in the beautiful for its own sake. No competition.
Enjoy the moment, before (speaking as a birder) it takes
flight. And when it does, give thanks that we had it for that
brief time. A generous Creator made enough beauty to go
around for all of us – and enough variety to please every
taste. A last quote, from the French this time: Vive la
difference!

Mission Co-operative Appeal
In today’s second reading, we hear the author of the letter to the
Hebrews liken the daily life of the Christian steward to a race, a
long-distance race perhaps, certainly not a sprint; requiring
endurance and a single-minded focus on Jesus at the finish line.
Good stewards are firmly committed to running the race, to live
the Christian life to the fullest, to keep their eyes focused on
Jesus. They don’t grow weary. They don’t lose heart. They
know there is immense joy waiting for them at the finish line.
Are you fully committed to living each day for Christ? Are you
running the race, or are you simply jogging? Just walking?
Sitting? Going backwards? Going nowhere? Some of us may
want to reflect on what we can do to run the race with even
more conviction. Others may want to reflect on how to simply
enter the race and start running.
The parish is where the Church lives, and stewards are the
lifeblood of a successful parish. In the parish, we find
community and support, liturgy and ritual, sacrament and
healing. In the parish, we find a way to give and a way to
receive. On a practical level, fall is the time when parish
planning gears up for the seasons ahead. Now, for a Christian
steward, is the time to prayerfully consider your own
involvement in the life of the parish in the coming year. How
might we serve – and be served? The Christian steward knows
participation in the parish is a win-win situation, feeding us as
we feed others. Our parish depends upon our response to live as
God’s stewards. We can accomplish much if all of us
generously share a portion of the time, talent, and treasure that
God has entrusted to us.
[
We would like to welcome Sister Mary Hamilton, SHCJ,
who visits St. Joseph this weekend as part of the regular
Mission Co-operative Appeal, sponsored by the Society for
the Propagation of the Faith.
S. Mary entered the Society of the Holy Child Jesus in
1972. She taught school for nine years in Washington, DC,
New York City, and Philadelphia. She spent seven years in
Chile as a missionary. She spent time in the Dominican
Republic and has been to Kenya twice as part of a shortterm medical mission team. She currently lives in Glenside,
PA, where she in engaged in pastoral ministry at St. Luke
the Evangelist parish.
We thank S. Mary for taking this time to share with us her
experiences in the work of evangelization, and we
encourage our parishioners to be as generous as they are
able to support the missionary work of the Church
throughout the world.

St. Joseph’s Music Ministry
IT’S TIME TO JOIN THE ADULT CHOIR! .
The Adult Choir is just starting up again after the Summer break and we will soon be in the midst of preparing
music for Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas along with the weekly Sunday Mass music. This is the perfect time for
anyone who has been thinking about joining the choir to get in gear and do so. Singing God’s praises can be a wonderful
experience for both the choir member and congregation. We’re made up of people of all ages and are always ready to
welcome new members into our choir family.
While musical training and experience are helpful, the desire to sing is paramount. Rehearsals are usually
Thursday evenings from 8:00 to 9:30 PM, with a short warm up period on Sunday mornings before the 10:30 AM Mass.
There are many of you out there with great voices and we need you! Please consider joining us. For more
information see Joseph Cangialosi in the Choir Loft after any of the Masses or call the Rectory at 747-3535.
THE CONTEMPORARY MUSIC MINISTRY
The Contemporary Music Ministry is also looking for new singers and instrumentalists to play at the 10:00 AM
Mass in the Auditorium, Being a member of the Contemporary Music Ministry is a wonderful way to share tha
talents God has given you. Students who volunteer may apply for experience toward any Community Service
requirements they might need to fulfill, 7th and 8th graders who join would be able to receive 5 hours service
credit for Confirmation.
Any singers from early grades through Adult who love to sing are invited to sit in at rehearsals to
experience the warm and friendly atmosphere and see if this is something you’d like to participate in. We enjoy
working together and would love to add new singers to our group. The group is also in need of instrument
players. Instrument players must be able to sight read music.
Rehearsals are held immediately following the 10:00 AM Mass until 11:45 AM.
If you have any interest or know someone else who does please leave a message for Jim Tornatore in the
Rectory 747-3535 or just stop be and chat after the 10:00 AM Mass.
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JOINING THE GIRLS CHOIR?
The St. Joseph Girls Choir was founded in 1994.
Loving singing in a great Choir at Mass is the chief qualification!
If you are entering the Third Grade through Twelfth Grade in September you may be eligible to join our choir.
We have a wonderful time making great music and great friendships.
If you have ever heard us sing you know what kind of experience you can expect. We look forward to
welcoming new members to our MINISTRY as we SING OUR PRAISE TO GOD!
We sing at the 9:00 AM Mass in the Church on a specific schedule.
We also sing at special liturgies throughout the year ,including Lessons and Carols, Christmas, Holy Week and
Easter.
Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings from 6:)) PM to 7:30 PM.
If interested, please contact Joseph Cangialosi at the rectory—747-3535
