As Manns embarks upon his new presidency, he
plans to be highly supportive of the Foundation and
its strategic goals. He often reflects upon his Jesuit high school where he was taught that you are "meant
for others," which has helped mold his personal philosophy on giving and philanthropy. He said, "God has
given us so much, continuously guides us through our lives, and we need to give back."
“As an organization
we need to focus on
not just health care,
but what happens
outside our walls...“
He believes that partnerships between Mercy Health Saint Mary's
and the community is important. He said, "As an organization we
need to focus on not just health care, but what happens outside
our walls, and support the community in a grassroots way." Manns
also suggested exploring the continuum of care and deciding
where resources are necessary. He said, "Health care is changing
and Mercy Health Saint Mary's needs to invest in both technology
and the community, which will need funding and support."
Manns envisions enhancing philanthropy within the hospital by fo-
cusing upon the internal giving campaign. He believes in building and communicating an internal model
of giving. Manns stated, "Colleagues need to understand the impact of their gifts, how they influence the
hospital environment, and the importance of donor generosity."
Additionally, philanthropy aligns with Manns' strategic goals. Ideally, he would like to expand the hospital's
territory, and create a presence where we currently do not exist. He said, "Growth of the hospital will request resources and it will need financial support. There are important strategic pieces of technology we
need to acquire and philanthropy could play an important role."

Gifts in Action:
Improving the Health of our Community
Grand Girlfriends and Grand Guys were created to bring women and men together to support programs and services that improve the health and enhance the
lives of families served by Mercy Health Saint Mary's. With a one-time $1,000 commitment, members create an endowment and choose how to direct the interest earned on the group's pooled resources through an annual grants award process. Recently, both groups voted on programs they believed would have the
largest impact on the health of the community.
And the winners are…

The Senior Adult Care Unit will receive $1,400 to purchase 26

scales for eligible patients who lack resources to purchase these
items. On June 2013, data showed that 22.2% of patients with
heart failure return to Mercy Health Saint Mary's within 30 days
of discharge. Daily weight and weekly blood pressure monitoring are critical measures and key for successful self-management of congestive heart failure. Some patients cannot afford,

After completion of the course, these "trainers" will share information with other
staff members, ensure new hires receive RTS training, provide bereavement services
to parents during hospitalization, follow-up with
parents following hospitalization, and establish
support groups for bereaved parents/families.

Honoring Care Champions
Grateful Patients Make a Difference. When patients and family members choose to
make a gift in honor of a Mercy Health Saint Mary's physician, employee or volunteer, they make a difference
in the lives of thousands of patients and families served every year.
Those who provide outstanding care are informed of the gift in their honor and are recognized as a Care
Champion within the hospital. Saint Mary's Foundation congratulates all our Care Champions, with a sincere "thank you" for providing our patients with an environment that heals the mind, body and spirit.

a relaxed atmosphere that helps heal
the spirit. Patients will have a personal attachment to the
songs, which gives them an opportunity to reminisce about
past memories. I believe music therapy offers a distraction,
calms the nerves, and helps with coping skills so the patients
can peacefully heal. When I work with families, and a member
is actively dying, music therapy brings a sense of peace to their
journey. It is a celebration of life, and it inspires me to make a
difference in patient care.

informed decisions concerning their health care moving forward. I strive to follow the Mercy Health Saint Mary's guiding
