As we look forward to Opening Day, we are ready to challenge all of you, our SABAH athletes and volunteers, to dedicate this year to eating healthy and to becoming physically fit. You may not realize it, but individuals with disabilities are at the greatest risk for the health consequences of a sedentary lifestyle. But it doesn’t have to be that way! It is our goal to change this trend for our SABAH athletes. Starting with this season, we want you to get in the best shape of your life! Here is the best part…. You are not alone! I am going to be the first to commit to joining with you to make this year the healthiest of my life. I will share my goals with you and you can help to track my progress. I also extend this challenge to each and every volunteer, parent, family member, and caregiver of a SABAH athlete. We are in this together! I am looking forward to embarking on this journey with you. Through our website and on social media, we will offer you weekly tips and challenges. Together, we will grow stronger, leaner, healthier, and more active. Join me in “The SABAH Challenge” as we make this a year that will change our lives! Gratefully, Sheila O’Brien Executive Director ARE YOU READY TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP? Beginning in October, look for The SABAH Challenge Look for The SABAH Challenge Logo on our Facebook page and “Like” to accept the challenge! Always consult your doctor before making any changes to your diet or nutrition program. ADULTS FIT AND FUN EAT HEALTHY! During the past summer, participants of SABAH’s Adults Fit and Fun program enjoyed a fun-filled morning learning healthy eating options and nutritional guidelines from students of Buffalo State’s Dietetics and Nutrition program. The interactive presentations taught adult participants appropriate serving sizes, alternatives to fast food, the value of nutrient rich food, and the significance of exercise in combination with a healthy diet. The collaboration between Buffalo State’s Dietetics and Nutrition program and SABAH has become a mutually beneficial partnership which allows undergraduate students to practice their presentation skills, while SABAH’s participants learn the tools to live a healthier lifestyle. SABAH is very grateful for the remarkable impact the James H. Cummings Foundation has made upon programming for participants of our Summer Clinics and The Children’s Guild Foundation’s Summer Athletes Bold At Heart program. Under a year ago, SABAH had applied to the James H. Cummings Foundation for funding for sport court flooring, as the turf surface was very worn and in need of replacement. The James H. Cummings Foundation graciously responded with a $20,000 grant donation for the new surface. As a result of their generosity, nearly 400 children challenged by disability enjoyed adaptive physical education programming on the new sport court surface at the Timothy J. Burvid Cazenovia Rink. “We cannot overstate the value of the new flooring, as it allows children challenged by disability the freedom to enjoy adaptive physical education on a smooth and safe surface,” states SABAH’s Executive Director Sheila O’Brien. “We remain very thankful to Director Mary Jo Hunt, and the Trustees of the James H. Cummings Foundation for this pivotal contribution to our organization.” Thank you, James H. Cummings Foundation, Inc. “The James H. Cummings Foundation was established to support the philanthropic vision of its namesake. Throughout its 52 year history, the Foundation has aided countless organizations engaged in advancing charitable interests according to the guidelines and policies espoused by Mr. Cummings.” School Day Adaptive Ice Skating Program Each week, Meredith Costello (far right) brings her students from Lockport High School to volunteer for the School Day Adaptive Ice Skating program. SABAH’s School Day Adaptive Ice Skating program enjoys the volunteer support of students from Lockport High School. These students, also challenged by disability, were former participants of the program and have progressed to the point where they are now capable volunteers for younger participants. “Participating in SABAH as volunteers has been extremely rewarding to my Lockport High School students with disabilities. Helping students less able than themselves provides them with a sense of being valuable members of the community. They experience feelings of self-worth and pride, which they are able to carry into adulthood. “ Meredith Costello, Lockport High School Teacher School Day Adaptive Ice Skating Program Adaptive Ice Hockey “Mitchell is definitely a man of few words! He thinks SABAH’s Adaptive Hockey program is “cool”, and “I love it!” All I can tell you is that SABAH gives Mitchell a true sense of belonging. Like family. Each year Mitchell meets more and more people and remembers their names. And everyone remembers Mitchell. As his mother, I could go on and on about SABAH. He has grown and changed the past 8 or 9 years that he has been with SABAH. All for the better. “ Jean Ellen McGregor, mother of Mitchell Page, Adaptive Ice Hockey Participant and Evening and Weekend Participant Summer SKATES ADULTS FIT & FUN “The SABAH Fit and Fun Program has been such a wonderful experience for all of the athletes here at Heritage Christian Services. The excitement in the air when we arrive at the ice rink is almost palpable and the noticeable improvement in the athlete’s coordination and dexterity from the first session to the last is absolutely amazing.” Mikhael Pilato Day Habilitation Manager, Heritage Christian Services OUR IM SABAH OFFERS SEVEN PROGRAMS SERVING MORE THAN 660 INDIVIDUALS CHALLENGED BY DISABILITY FROM THE WESTERN NEW YORK REGION. “SABAH rocks!” I get to skate with all my buddies and I get to skate in the fast group. The most important thing is don’t be afraid to fall…you just get back up and keep going!” Summer Clinics Craig Donatelli, Summer Skates participant and Evening & Weekend program participant. Tonya Barker, known to everyone as “Miss Tonya,” brings youth from Project Gift to SABAH’s Summer Clinics. Sarah Gunter’s class from Buffalo Public School #59. Participants of The Children’s Guild Foundation’s Summer Athletes Bold At Heart program. The Children’s Guild Foundation’s MPACT Our impact is not simply measured by the scope of our programs or the number of people we serve, but by the story of each SABAH athlete who has become stronger, bolder, healthier, and more capable as a result of participation in our programs. Summer Athletes Bold At Heart Program “SABAH has given my students the opportunity to grow not only socially and emotionally but learn the benefits of taking care of our bodies.” Sarah Gunter, Buffalo Public School Teacher Evening and Weekend Programs “SABAH means amazing lifelong friendships filled with brave skaters who are fearless on the ice and dedicated volunteers who are committed to making the event special and being part of the SABAH family. “ Jennifer Rockenstein, Evening and Weekend Program Volunteer “Our Project Gift kids love coming to SABAH! They really enjoyed the football clinics and especially meeting Marcus Easley of the Buffalo Bills. They said SABAH means lots of fun and learning that I can do anything!“ Tonya Barker, Project Gift Donors Platinum $15,000 and up Buffalo Sabres Foundation The Children’s Guild Foundation, Inc. The grandmother of SABAH athlete Jared Smith and mother of Board President Mary Clare Koessler-Smith, Mary Koessler was one of SABAH’s most dedicated supporters for over 20 years. Mary Koessler, along with her husband, the late John Koessler, founded the John W. and Mary M. Koessler Foundation in 1992 to support philanthropic charities and organizations across Western New York. SABAH’s Executive Director Sheila O’Brien states, “Mrs. Koessler had a deep devotion to SABAH, and specifically to her grandson and SABAH athlete, Jared Smith. She was an integral part of the SABAH family and will be deeply missed by all of us.” Valerie Powell Lance & Michele Pozarny Mark & Andrea Preisler Robert & Gail Propester Janine Ransbury Phillip & Bridget Rapini RAZL LLC Kelsey Redden Patrick Redden Emily Reinhart Mark Reinhart Brian Reszel Ribco Inc.
