FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 6 May 2016 YSG CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY KOTA KINABALU (FRIDAY) - Yayasan Sabah celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. In marking this milestone, which is indeed an extraordinary accomplishment and epitomises the will, determination and lasting success of an Organisation that has worked tirelessly towards bringing about changes and development for the betterment of the people and the State of Sabah, Yayasan Sabah will be organising the launching of the 50th Anniversary of Yayasan Sabah on 9 May 2016 at the Auditorium Tun Raffae, Menara Tun Mustapha. According to the Director of Yayasan Sabah, Datuk Sapawi Bin Haji Ahmad, the main objective of the event is to launch the year-long celebration of its birth and as recognition for all efforts brought about by Yayasan Sabah in providing education and social well-being of the people in Sabah. “We hope, the event will also foster awareness of the history of Yayasan Sabah and its grand socioeconomic impact on the people of Sabah since its inception 50 years ago,” explained Datuk Sapawi. Datuk Sapawi further disclosed, “The event, due to be launched by the Chief Minister of Sabah cum Chairman of the Yayasan Sabah Board of Trustees, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman will be highlighted with the launching of Yayasan Sabah 50th Years Anniversary book, 50th Anniversary Coin by Bank Negara Malaysia and a book entitled Sabah Crafts. In addition, the event will witness the launching of the Yayasan Sabah Volunteer Unit as well as the opening of the much anticipated Artisan Galleria, Pusat Kraftangan Sabah.” 1 After 50 years of existence, Yayasan Sabah has successfully earned out its objectives in providing education and educational facilities for Malaysians in Sabah by producing thousands of successful students throughout the State. This is not merely an ordinary feat as Yayasan Sabah has also involved itself in other charitable causes throughout its 50 years of existence as well as creating opportunities for a more equitable distribution of economic wealth among Malaysians in Sabah and providing aid to charitable institutions and victims of natural disasters in the State. Education is provided through scholarships and loans for students to continue their secondary and tertiary education in selected domain of fields as determined from time to time based on the workforce needs of the State. In offering both educational opportunities and facilities, Yayasan Sabah facilitate the formation of pre-schools throughout the State while Yayasan Sabah’s wholly-owned institution of higher learning, Kolej Teknikal Yayasan Sabah (KTYS), puts up a large number of technical and vocational courses for students. The establishment of the University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) is another of its success in expanding its role in education. Branded as a “Green University,” UCSF subscribes that future generations must rely on a strong apprehension of the interconnected green issues facing people today so as to be guided towards sustainable living. Being an advocate of conservation, Yayasan Sabah set aside five conservation areas, namely Danum Valley, Maliau Basin, Imbak Canyon, Silam Coast and Taliwas River in perpetuity as a legacy for future generations and for Research and Development as well as eco-tourism. In practicing an integrated and sustainable forest management that is in line with the State and National forestry development policies and legislations, Yayasan Sabah collaborated with major national and international organisations such as PETRONAS, The Academy of Sciences of Malaysia, Shell (Malaysia), The Royal Society OF United Kingdom, CIRAD Forêt of France, Face the Future (formerly known as Face Foundation of the Netherlands), IKEA of Sweden and DANCED/DANIDA of Denmark. In the interest of combating greenhouse gas offsets and climate change, Yayasan Sabah adapted biodiversity enhancement of degraded forest regeneration and rehabilitation practices besides being the pioneer in introducing Reduced Impact Logging mechanism. 2 In diversifying its income-generating base, Yayasan Sabah has ventured into Agro Plantation, Hospitality and Tourism and Oil and Gas. In addition, Yayasan Sabah is also focusing on Biotechnology and Horticulture, Real Estate Development, Fisheries and Food Industries, besides Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) industries. In projecting the future interests of Yayasan Sabah, Datuk Sapawi reiterated, “Yayasan Sabah will continue striving to attain greater heights in all our endeavours in bringing about positive change and sustainable development for the people and State of Sabah. As our vision of a ‘Dynamic, People Oriented, Committed and Caring Organisation’ accentuated by the mission ‘To uplift the quality of life of Malaysians living in Sabah’ suggests, Yayasan Sabah’s policy decisions in the years ahead will continue to be aimed at creating socioeconomic stability ultimately for the benefit of the people and State of Sabah, whatever the challenge, whatever the obstacle.” Datuk Sapawi.
