Roosevelt to the King of
England from a telegraph
station in South Wellfleet,
MA.
The father of the direct
primary is credited to
Robert LaFollette, who
served as governor of
Wisconsin from 1901 to
1906, and US senator
from 1906 to 1925. In 1902,
LaFollette pushed for
creation of a Wisconsin
direct primary provision
and vetoed any legislation to the contrary. After
a Wisconsin Supreme
Court decision was favorable to LaFollette’s cause,
the state’s voters passed
the nation’s first direct
primary law by a huge
margin on May 23, 1903.

is completed with arrival
in New York. The trip had
