The first appearance
of Mickey and Minnie
Mouse on film occurs
with the release of the
animated short film, Plane
Crazy, on May 15, 1928.
The George Gershwin
opera, Porgy and Bess,
opened in New York City
on October 10, 1935.
The American author,
Margaret Mitchell, published Gone with the Wind
on May 30, 1936 at the
age of 36. In 1937, the
book – which was a hit
from the get-go – won a
Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Mitchell died at the age of
49 after being struck by a
car. As of 2014, a Harris
poll found this novel to be
the second favorite book
of American readers, just
behind the Bible. More
than 30 million copies
have been printed worldwide.
