 As the Arabic is a language which does not use the short vowels when writing, the Arab
philologists have invented the sign of (sukun), the impulsive consonant /
‫السكون‬
ُّ (‫)اـ‬
(absent
vowel), to mark the consonants which have no vowel when, in the same word, the short vowels
are marked on and under the other consonants which have it. So, we have prevented any kind of
confusion that can be created for the reader if a consonant has no vowel or in a vowelized
sentence. That is why if we mark the vowel of the consonants of a word it is obligatory to apply
sukun on the consonant which has no vowel.

they suffer a variation in their form of writing according to their position in the word. Observe the
following examples.

Observe:
 Pay attention to the fact that the letter (‫ )ى‬is phonetically identical to the long vowel (‫ )ا‬which we
saw at the beginning of Unit I. Its function is also the same.
Page 85
2- Listen and read:
 Listen carefully to the text 2 corresponding to the Letter (‫ )ى‬on track 6 of your audio.
 Listen again several times paying attention to the way of pronunciation and writing of the four
words in your textbook.
 Listen again to the text one more time, word by word, and try to repeat it.
 Pay attention to the fact that the long vowel (‫ )ى‬is exclusively used at the end of the word. Its last
syllable ends in a long vowel. Attention! The two long vowels (‫ )ى‬and (‫ )ا‬cannot be used equally.
 Copy the four words in your exercise book.
 Read the four words you have just written.

3- Listen and read:
 Listen carefully to the text 3 corresponding to the Letter (‫ )ى‬on track 6 of your audio.
 Listen again the pronounced word and try to repeat it.
 Copy it in your exercise book.
Page 86
Observe:
 Pay attention to the fact that the form of writing of the letter (‫ )ى‬is almost identical to the letter
(‫ )ي‬which we saw at the end of Unit II. The only difference is that the first does not have the two
points below. Still, they are very different letters.
Page 86
4- Listen and read:
 Listen carefully to the text 4 corresponding to the Letter (‫ )ى‬on track 6 of your audio.
 Listen again several times paying attention to the difference between the last syllables of the tow
words corresponding to each of the six pictures. The two words are written in a verbal tense, the
first corresponds to the third person masculine singular of the past and the second to the same
person in present indicative.

 Listen again one more time paying attention to the way of writing of the letter in your textbook

 Copy the new letter in your exercise book.
Page 88
Observe:
 Pay attention to the fact that the letter (‫ )ة‬is a variation of the consonant (‫ )ت‬which we saw in Unit
II.
 The letter (‫ )ة‬always stands at the end of the word and the letter before it always has the short
vowel: (‫) ـأ‬.
 When the word in which it appears is in the middle of a sentence, it is pronounced like the letter
(‫)ت‬, and when this word is the last one in a sentence it is pronounced like the letter (‫)هـ‬. Today,
both cases are usually omitted totally leaving the vowel (‫ ) ـأ‬of the previous letter as the end of the
word.

gender.
 Copy the four words in your exercise book.
 Read the four words you have just written.
Page 89
Observe:
 Standing at the end of the word the form of writing of the letter (‫ )ة‬varies according to the
previous. It is written in this form (‫ )ة‬when the previous letter belongs to the group of the six
Arabic letters which do not admit the union with the next letter which we saw in Unit I and it is
written in this form (‫ )ـة‬when the previous letter is one of the rest.

 Listen carefully to the text 1 corresponding to the Letter (‫ )أ‬on track 7 of your audio.
 Listen again one more time paying attention to the way of writing of the letter in your textbook
and try to repeat it.
 Pay attention to the fact that the letter (‫ )أ‬is a composition of the letter (‫ )ا‬which in this case does
not work like a long vowel but like a support for hamza which is written above or below the letter
(‫)ا‬. Having hamza means that this letter is a consonant, that is why it requires vowels, short ones
and long ones.
 Copy the new letter with their respective short vowels in your exercise book.

6
 The letter (‫ )ا‬is only used at the beginning of the words the consonants of which do not have any
vowel and that is why it has sukun.
 In principle, the letter (‫ )ا‬is a silent letter and is only pronounced like the consonant (‫ )أ‬when it
starts a sentence because the Arabic language does not permit start its sentences with consonants
which do not have vowels. In this case the letter (‫ )ا‬has its own short vowel.
 Copy the new letter with its respective short vowels in your exercise book.

 Pay attention to the fact that the letter (‫ )آ‬is only a combination of the consonant (‫ )أ‬with its long

 Copy the new letter in your exercise book.

9- Think:
 Complete the word corresponding to what you can see in the photo with the corresponding letters.
----------
Page 99
Observe:
 Pay attention to the fact that the consonant (‫ )ء‬has several ways of writing. Appearing alone it is
written completely on the writing line. It also appears on the letters (‫)ا‬, (‫ )و‬and (‫ )ي‬without points
which form the group of the three letters which have a double function in Arabic, as we saw
before: the long vowel one and the consonant one. But in this case they do not have any of these
two functions because they only work as support for the consonant (‫)ء‬. Its existence is only
orientative if there are no vowels. So, the four cases we have, the consonant (‫ )ء‬are which count.
Page 99
1- Listen and read:
 Listen carefully to the text 1 corresponding to the Letter (‫ )ء‬on track 7 of your audio.
 Listen again one more time paying attention to the way of writing of the consonant (‫ )ء‬and its
different letters/supports in your textbook and try to repeat it.
 The selection of the different supports does not work out of the blue and its use matters. Every
support depends on the vowel of its consonant (‫ )ء‬and the vowel of the previous consonant. On
this level we only concentrate on recognizing its way of reading in its different ways of writing
and we skip learning its way of writing.
 Pay attention to the fact that the pronunciation of the consonant
(‫)ء‬
does not change with the
different supports.
 Listen again to the text one more time, letter by letter, and try to repeat it.

----------
Page 101
Observe:
 The article in Arabic is the same for all the different genders and numbers. It is composed of two
letters (‫ )ال‬which stand at the beginning of the indefinite word (noun) in order to convert it in a
definite word. The letter (‫ )ا‬is the one which we saw before in this unit and it is ouly pronounced
when it starts a sentence. The letter (‫ )ل‬of the article never has a vowel and its pronunciation
varies according to the consonants afterwards and they are devided into two groups: the
consonants ‘moon’ and the ‘solar’ consonants. When the following consonant is a ‘moon’, the
letter (‫ )ل‬is pronounced and has sukun and in this case it is called moon (‫)ل‬. When the consonant
afterwards is a ‘solar’, it is duplicated (it has shadda) and (‫ )ل‬is omitted and called solar.
 In this case the letter (‫ )ل‬is moon because the previous consonant (‫)ق‬, which belongs to the first
group, is pronounced and has sukun.
Page 101
1- Listen and read:
 Listen carefully to the text 1 corresponding to the Letter (‫ ) ال‬moon on track 7 of your audio.
 Listen again one more time paying attention to the way of writing and pronunciation of the
consonant (‫ ) ال‬moon in your textbook and try to repeat it.

middle of the sentence.

 Listen again several times to each of the two pronounced sentences.
 Write the two sentences in their corresponding place in your textbook.
Page 102
Observe:
 Pay attention to the fact that the letter (‫ )ل‬in this case is solar because the previous consonant (‫)ش‬
which belongs to the second group is not pronounced and does not have sukun, but the following
consonant is duplicated and has the sign shadda on it. When this sign appears on the first
consonant after the article (‫)ال‬, this shows us that the letter (‫ )ل‬is solar.
