Pick up stitches to finish a knitting
(neck, sleeve, …)

The purpose is to pick up stitches to make the sleeves of my tunic. This method can be used
to make a neck in order that it will be well integrated in the knitting.

Supplies
 The knitting with the shoudlers sewed
 A new skein to avoid having to join another skein during the knitting (less than a skein
is necessary for half the sleeve)
 A 4 mm hook
 Needles, at least a 4 mm needle to put the gathered stitches
Whether you make a neck or a sleeve, you must have sewed one of the shoulders. If you
work the neck with circular needles (without sewing), it’s better if both shoulders are sewed.
The method
Put the knitting with the right side in front of you.
Locate the armhole beginning of the considered side. On the photo, I put a marker at the
beginning of the armhole during the knitting. If you didn’t do it, you’ll have to find the first
diminution of the armhole.

Plounge the hook between the 1st and the 2nd stich in the « hole » formed by the 2 stitches :
Put the thread on the hook leaving a piece of 50 cm free on the right side (it will be tied at the
end of the purl row and weaved in end)
Make the thread go through the hole to make a chain

Proceed like this for every “hole” (in between of the 1st and 2nd stitch of each row) you have
on the armhole. In armhole case, you must pick up a stich for every row. In neck case, pick
up stitches as to make a continuity in the knitting.
When you have picked up 15 stitches, the hook begins to be overcrowded… it’s the time to
move your stitches from the hook to the needle. Move your stitches to the end of the hook
(opposite of the hook side) :

Shift the stitches from the hook to the needle. During the process be really careful not to
loose stitches :
At the junction of the two sides you’ll have to add a sticht to avoid having a hole.
Continue picking up stitches until you reach the beginning of the other side armhole.
On my example, once all the stitches are picked up, I’ve got a lot of stitches nearly 200.

The row of picked up stitches will be the first row and will be considered as a right side.
I can know knit the sleeve as follow :
3 rows like this purl, knit, purl
On the 4th row, separate the sleeve in 2 at the shoulder seam :
Knit the stitches on the 1st side until you reach 6 stitches before the seam
Make 2 diminutions by knitting 2 stitches together (k2tog) then knit the 2 next stitches
Tie a new ball
Knit the 2 first stitches
Make 2 diminutions(k2tog) then knit until the end of the row
Knit both sleeves at the same time : on each sleeve make 19 diminutions of 2 stitches every
4 rows (on the same side you did previously) then diminish 2 stitches every 2 rows until you
obtain 4 stitches that you bind off

How do I know that I went twice in the same hole ?
The thread will make a double loop on the hook instead of having one more stich.
