Infection Control …..Flu Season: Is still upon us! Please be diligent at washing your
hands (there is alcohol-gel stations throughout the village). This is the best way to stop the spread
of germs. For visitors—if you are not feeling well, we ask that you do not visit the village.
Retirement Home Satisfaction Survey … The satisfaction survey was sent out to the main
family contact in the retirement home in order to get input on the services that are provided at
Winston Park. We did this as our residents receive the Quality of Life Survey on a year basis.
This year the return rate of surveys was 23%.
Attached are the results of the survey. The results will be reviewed at the Retirement Home
Residents Town Hall Meeting, and with team members. It is clear from the returned surveys that
the majority of all responses fell into the “very satisfied” and “satisfied” categories. All comments
made will be reviewed with the above listed groups. Thank you to all those who participated. In
the survey. Your input is very valuable.
Success Awards ….it’s award season again!: Each year we vote on team members
who we feel deserve the honour of receiving a Success Award. There are 4 categories: Play with
Your Customer, Make Their Day, Always do your Best and Choose Your Attitude. Anyone
can vote! Please watch this month for the ballots that will be placed on Main Street in the
retirement home and near the main entrance to LTC . The team member who receives one of these
awards is invited to join in the annual Schlegel Villages Operational Retreat, is awarded a plaque
of recognition and also a small cash award. The awards will be presented to the winners at our
annual Team Member Appreciation Celebration this May. Please support out team members!

Aspiration Statements …… We continue to grow! This year we
have decided to move our focus to 3 new Aspiration statements. The following is the ultimate definition of each Aspiration is as follows:
1.
PROMOTE RESIDENT EMPOWERMENT—We understand that empowerment is a
fundamental human right. Our empowered residents are supported by team members and
families in determining their own daily schedule and routines. This support is made
possible by knowing each residents as an individual, and by listening, learning, and
unconditionally supporting each resident's right to choose.
2.
CONNECT RESEARCH AND INNOVATION TO VILLAGE LIFE— At our
Villages, we effectively communicate with all Village stakeholders (residents. Families,
team members and policy makers) the results and implications of research on aging
through various channels. Our research communication plan engages the Village
policies and practices. We also integrate research results into professional development
programs and into College and University curricula. As a result, residents, families and
team members are informed, involved in, and excited about the culture the culture of
innovation within the Villages.
3.
PROMOTE CROSS-FUNCTIONAL TEAMS— Team members are consistently
assigned to the same small group of residents or to a neighbourhood. Regardless of
department or position, team members work collaboratively and flexibly to support each
resident's independence, engagement and exercise of choice.
As we move through 2014 we will work towards achieving these goals. Please feel free to
ask questions at any time.
I would also like to extend a warm welcome to any residents who have moved into our
Village since our last newsletter was published.
At Winston Park, we have an open door policy and we welcome your input.

Tips from our Laundry Department
The following are a few reminders from our Laundry department …..if you
have any questions, please let us know.
Wools and cashmere cannot be safely washed at the Village, DO NOT WASH labels are
placed on these articles but accidents can happen. If you bring cashmere or wool clothing
to the village we ask that you make your own arrangement to have them dry- cleaned.
The number of a local dry cleaner is in your resident handbook.
At the Village of Winston Park all articles of clothing are washed in hot water to prevent
infections.
We use industrial washers and dryers that may be aggressive to delicate clothing. The
machines do not have a delicate cycle.
When new clothing comes to laundry it is labeled as soon as possible, but please be patient,
we will make sure that the clothes get back to the resident, hopefully by the end of shift or
the next day at the latest.
Laundry is separated into lights and darks to prevent colours running. We do not use bleach on
our white clothing. Bleach is only used on our towels and bed sheets.
We do not recommend the use of “Hankies”. They carry many bacteria, and sometimes need a
second wash to get rid of any ruminants left on them. We recommend the use of Kleenex.
Thank you.

A Message from PAL…
The Olympics are Coming!
This year’s Schlegel Village Olympics are fast approaching, with Winston Park set to compete on February
13th at The Village of Tansley Woods. Make sure to support our residents as they compete in events such as
the Hockey Shoot, Curling, and a Biathlon and Triathlon! Keep an eye out for them around the Village as
they train hard to represent our team. You will see our residents putting their skills that they have learned
being a part of the PAL program to good use, such as the NuStep machine and the Urban Poles.
Maybe you’ve been inspired by one of your fellow residents to start training for the next Olympics?
Make sure to see your Kinesiologist to see how you too can begin a program that will put you on the
path to the top of the podium!
Did You Know?
The Olympic Flame first appeared in the modern Olympics at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam.
Good luck to all of the athletes competing at the 2014 Schlegel Olympic Games!
