Constant People in our lives by Ian Woodward
Readings: - Isaiah 58:9b-14, Hebrews 12:18-29
Luke 13:10-17
Looking back over my life I have realised that certain people are
important. The rocks on which our lives are built, my parents, aunts
and uncles, some teachers, Youth leaders. There are others who are
also rocks. We are all built on such rocks. Last week I attended the
funeral of one such rock.
What I mean by the term rock is people who are steady. People who
were constant in certain things, constant in love, constant in
discipline, constant in praise. So constant, so set in their ways that
we learn the same lesson from each of them.
You will all have had ‘other people’ ‘rocks’ in your lives. Anyone
remember the phrase, ‘What would your parents say if they saw you
doing that?’ and other such phrases were issued by 'constant’
people.
Just as Jesus in this Bible story is constant. He sees a person in
need and he does something about it. It does not matter to him that it
is the Sabbath. It does not matter to him that the leaders of the
synagogue are there.
The woman enters the Synagogue bent over and deformed in her
appearance. She had been that way for eighteen years. She had

resigned herself to be that way until her death, and then Jesus calls
her to himself and heals her.
Jesus is at it throughout the Gospels. Sometimes people come to him
sometimes he sees and acts. But always out of love and pity for the
suffering. He was constant, He was a rock.
My rocks were not well known but to me their message was love.
Edie Smith along with her husband Frank served St Mark, Dalston
served God and his people. One of their things was hosting teas on a
Sundays for a dozen or more young people. This was so the
youngsters did not have to traipse home and back again.
Coming back for the evening service and singing in the choir. An
example of love and service that I and many others saw. These and
many other things they did working quietly, no fanfares, no
accolades, just the joy of knowing they were doing God will.
Hold on they were working on the Sabbath! Couldn’t they have given
tea at some other time? But Jesus never shunned an opportunity to
help. Never shunned the opportunity to point out leaders failings.
The leaders were indignant, but Jesus called them Hypocrites.
‘What have you done to ease this woman’s suffering?’ he asks.
‘This is not an ‘enemy’ this is a daughter of Abraham!!! She has been
in bondage for eighteen years! What have you done? How have you
helped?’ He never held back.
It is not the letter of the law that should be followed but the spirit.
Love God and love your neighbour. This woman was very much a
‘neighbour’. Jesus reminded the Jewish leaders, ‘You water your
animals on the Sabbath, you should help her.’ Jesus’ opponents were
put to shame, and the crowd rejoiced and praised God.
Last Wednesday a large crowd many of whom had sat at the Smith’s
table Sunday by Sunday rejoiced for her life, for having known her
and seen the example she displayed.
I learnt again that I should give thanks for all those rocks, we should
all give thanks for everyone that influenced our lives, all those people

that set each of us on a straight course and for each of them that
pointed us towards a loving and constant Saviour.
May we do the same for others. AMEN.
THE POWER TO FLOURISH by Fr Noel
Flourish is my new favourite word! Just say it aloud and listen to it.
You know you are going to have a better day. To give yourself and
others permission to flourish is the fruit of a generous heart. The
opposite is to begrudge. Begrudge is my new least favourite word.
Just say it aloud and listen to it. You know you are going to have a
lousy day!
The power to flourish is to thrive, prosper and bloom, be in good
shape, be in good health, be well, be strong, be vigorous, become
better, mature and evolve. So too with our spiritual growth.
St. Paul is eager for the early Christians to mature in faith. In
Ephesians 4:15 ‘speaking the truth in love we will in all things grow
up into Him who is the head, that is, Christ’ and in Colossians 1:28 ‘
so that we may present everyone mature in Christ’.
I want to share with you a spiritual growth form I use when someone
is coming to me for spiritual direction, it helps me get an overview of
the person’s prayer life. Please take time to fill it in, even as an
exercise of personal spiritual inventory. The diocese has a network of
spiritual directors available to anyone. It is a service free of charge
with your responsibility to travel to the person with whom you have
been paired. Check for details on the diocesan website or email:

Defending the Faith
Our Autumn series of Sunday afternoon discussion
sessions is under way.
As explained in last month’s magazine, the
course is entitled Defending the Faith, and is aimed
at equipping ourselves
 to meet atheistic attacks on Christianity,
 to help with the enquiries of would-be
believers,
 to answer any self-doubts we might harbour.

How far will you go, For God? by Paul Niemic
In the Bible; Jesus asks a rich young man to sell possessions;
another to go and sin no more;
another to get up and walk and one to have him [Jesus] around
to his house for tea:
How far will each of US go?
Thank God we’re not all Stuart—who just cycled over a 1000 miles;
nor are we all called overseas; nor to do massive things—but God IS
calling each of us.
To Pray, To Give, To Act, To stop…………?
There are 10,080 minutes in a week and each of us commits the 80
by being part of ‘Church’ on a Sunday….What of the other 10,000?
It’s not just us as individuals – Small groups, Whole Churches, Our
Team, Deanery, Diocese, Wider Church, and Ecumenical. Small
groups of concerned citizens are those who throughout history have
caused change to happen often they have been inspired by their faith
and empowered by God.
As I write there has been no referendum: it’s about to happen and
change will happen regardless of the result. So too in our Churches
and, please God , in our lives. Those in the early Church, written of in
the Book of Acts, changed individually, corporately and set the
foundations for the changing of the world---by activating God’s love in
small but HUGELY significant ways—so much so that the call went
out –‘See how these Christians love one another’……….could that
call go out today?..........should that call go out today?...........and not
just each other.
I shall be ‘Promoting’ Christianity at Cedar’s School Faiths
Day…..and the Students will ask me about Sexuality, Hypocrisy, The
treatment of Women, abuse and more negativity inspired by an ‘Anti’
Media
We have a long way to go, let’s go together in the Power of the Spirit,
Inspired by Jesus to the Glory of God………………or not?

God is calling, the world –Individual, local, national, international is
MASSIVELY needy. YOU CAN HELP or we can all make
excuses……….like those who passed the beaten man prior to the
Good Samaritan.
God loves YOU, so much; he gives you free choice……..there’s a
party in Heaven for each of us Sinners when we turn back to God
and respond to his call….and it’s NEVER too late.

The Men of Linslade: 16 by Kate Crooks
Private Charles Hill 11509, 105th Coy., Machine Gun Corps
Died 23 July 1916, age 29
For twenty-four weeks during the winter of 1914/1915 four thousand
officers and men of the 63rd Brigade where billeted in LeightonLinslade and nearby villages; compared to the population, the
equivalent today would be sixteen thousand men. The 63rd Brigade
included the 8th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry, in which
Charles Hill had enlisted. His Somerset Light Infantry regimental
number (15229) indicates that he probably volunteered during the
first month of the WW1. Many lasting friendships developed during
that winter and the Leighton Buzzard Observer continued to report
that letters from soldiers had been received by their former hosts
throughout the War. There were also wartime romances.
On 22 August 1915, at St Barnabas’ Church, by Licence, Charles Hill
married Lillian May Woolhead. The groom was twenty-eight and living
at Whitley Camp, Surrey, which was where the 8th Somerset’s were
stationed after Leighton Buzzard. He said his (deceased) father was
Samuel Hill, a farmer. The bride lived at 58 Wing Road, the twentyyear old daughter of John Woolhead, a platelayer on the LNWR.
Lillian was very much a local girl; her parents John and Caroline (nee
Holmes) were born in Stewkley and Northall, although they had
married in Liverpool where Caroline was in service.
Charles Hill disembarked with his Battalion in France on 8 September
1915, so they must have married during his last leave.
Nearly a year later, Charles Hill, by then transferred to the Machine
Gun Corps died of wounds, probably at No 21 Casualty Clearing
Station and was buried in nearby La Neuville British Cemetery,
Corbie. The 105th Company had suffered some casualties on 18 July,
and then many more on 20 July in an attack in the Bernafay and
Trones Woods’s area of the ongoing Battles of the Somme. Charles
Hill’s Service Records do not survive, but the Register of Soldiers’
Effects lists his widow Mrs Lillian May Hill as his sole legatee and she
paid for the inscription on his headstone, according to the
Commonwealth War Graves Commission records. The only other
facts known about Charles Hill come from “Soldiers Died in the Great

War” which gives his place of birth as Edgbaston and place of
enlistment as Birmingham.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to identify a Charles Hill on the preWW1 Census Records who fits all these facts. This raises some
intriguing possibilities, from accidental miss-recording of names and
dates, to the possibility that “Charles Hill” was not his real name.
In early 1921 Lillian Hill, still only twenty-five, married her second
husband Claude Edward Wright. They had four sons and remained in
the Linslade area. They both died in the 1960s and were buried at St
Mary’s, Old Linslade. Lillian’s parents John and Caroline Woolhead
are also buried at St Mary’s.
