January / February 2015 - American Legion Dewey Lowman Post 109
The Cyclops American Legion Dewey Lowman Post #109 1610 Sulphur Spring Rd, Halethorpe, Maryland 21227 Phone Number: (410) 242-5956 Website: americanlegionpost109.org January - February 2015 **** 81 Years of Service Happy 2015! Commander’s Message I hope everyone had a Happy Holiday Season. 2015 is upon us and the Post is holding it's own financially, but maintenance is always a problem. The security and telephone system need to be repaired and updates. This may be a very expensive project, but we'll do what has to be done. I will not be running for Commander next year. It is time for someone else to take over the reins. The Post needs someone with new ideas. The Post needs someone who can inspire others to take a more active role in Post 109. I believe there will be other positions on the Executive Board that will need to be filled. The Post needs volunteers to take over the "Car Show" and "Children's Christmas Party," and other committees to raise funds. So with the New Year, I hope to see new faces on the Executive Board and Committees. Jim Sullivan For God and Country Service Officer’s Corner 1. McVets: The Maryland Center for Veterans Educational Training is in dire need of men’s and women’s winter jackets, coats, gloves, scarfs and blankets. If you have any of these items that you don’t use anymore or just need an excuse to discard them here is your opportunity. Please bring them to our Post Home and I will get them to McVet’s here in Baltimore. I’m sure that each and every one of you has some of these items in your home. 2. Military Magazines: Please keep the magazines coming in. The veterans at the VA Hospital can’t wait until the next delivery. Thanks to all our members who have contributed and continue to contribute to this worthy cause. 3. Cell Phones: Ask your family, your friends, co-workers and neighbors to give you their old/used cell phones. The hours used to work on these phones go towards “Phone Cards” for our men and women service members abroad so that they can call home to their loved ones. Thanks to all our members who have contributed this past year. 4. Polar Bear Plunge: Again this year on January 23rd I will be freezing in the chilly waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Not only do I participate in “The Plunge” but Judy and I volunteer one weekend each summer for the Summer Olympics. If you have ever been associated with these children you know that they need our help. Once you interact with these kids, you will never forget that feeling of giving. So… I’m asking each and every one of you to dig a little deeper this year. All monies collected go to the Special Olympics of Maryland. I will have an envelope in the lounge for all your donations. I am thanking you in advance for your generous donations. 5. Veterans Christmas Party: Once again the Baltimore County Council will be hosting the Annual Veteran’s Christmas Party at the Perry Point VA Hospital on Saturday January 10th. If you would like to participate in this very worthwhile activity or need any details please let me know. Thanks again to all those who’ve donated/contributed during the past year and May each of you have a very Blessed and Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. Some of the programs that the Unit sponsors are well underway. Our meetings are well attended but we miss the members that do not attend more often. We meet only ten times a year so please make an effort. You can participate in the many plans that are discussed throughout the year for our various fundraisers and activities. It is a time to socialize and get to know your fellow auxiliary members. They are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 pm. Please consider attending. Jean McElroy, President VA & R I am very happy to report that the 5th Annual Guest Bartending Event to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project was a great success. We had over 200 attending the event and made $1,021 for the Project. A big thanks goes out to Post officers for guest bartending, Dionysus Catering for supplying the food, our paid bartenders for donating their tips, and all the Auxiliary members who helped or attended the event. A special thanks to all those folks who stopped by the Post on the Arbutus Ironman Pub Crawl and gave generously to the cause again this year. If you attended the event – thanks so much for your support. If you did not, you missed a great time. We are already planning the event for next fall. Girl’s State It is important that we reach out to the younger generation and encourage them to get involved. High school girls, who have completed their Junior year, spend an intensive week of study, and working together as self-governing citizens. They learn how to participate in the functioning of their state’s government in preparation for their future roles as responsible adult citizens. If anyone has a family member that would be interested in this program please contact me at 410-247-1121. Jean McElroy, Chairman Chaplain’s Report Please let me know of any member or member's family who is ill or has had a death in the family. Leave a message if the machine picks up. I can be reached at 410-796-7026. God bless you all and God bless all our troops, whether active duty, reserve or Veterans. Membership Thanks goes to all of our Auxiliary members who have paid their dues and are now “Early Birds”. When you return your dues early, it really cuts down on having to send reminder letters etc. and also postage. So again – thanks! We still have some members who have not yet paid for 2015, so give yourself a Valentines Day gift… it is only $22.00. We would like to welcome several new members: they are Sandra Costigan, Linda Blackwell, Carol Sprucebank, Frances Patton, and Nancy Sullivan. Welcome ladies! Sadly, we have lost some longtime members. They are Gertrude O’Rourke, Connie Clark, and Betty Thompson (former Unit President). If you have any questions regarding your dues, please either email me or call (410-747-7018). We are always looking for new members, as well as juniors. How about giving your granddaughters, great-granddaughters an early gift by enrolling them in the Junior Auxiliary? Call me for an application. I hope that everyone had a very safe and Happy Holiday. Looking forward to seeing you at our meetings. Doris Scheihing, Membership Chair [email protected] Constitution and By-Laws Revised copies of the By Laws are available for your reference. Please call or e-mail me if you wish a set. It is important that you have a copy to be apprised of the current rules and regulations of the Auxiliary, as well as your Unit.
